161 | : Adrianne Lenker - Ruined | [04/41 (252) / 03/29 (96)]

Starting the year off as we mean to go on, we place in a very respectable 4th! For the first time in the nation's long history, it is our third consecutive top 10 placement following Blackshape (2nd) and Matt Guy (6th). Which makes up for the three consecutive DNQs we had last year. It is our 23rd top 10 hit overall and 11th to place top five.

BJSC 162: Leblanc - Palladio

Leblanc is a Parisian DJ who specialises in mixing electronic and symphonic music. One of his classical remakes 'Palladio' represents Danæviia this month, the song was originally composed by Karl Jenkins in 1995 (he was also behind the BJSC hit 'Adiemus') and later covered by Escala in 2008 on the final of Britains Got Talent - but is now given a melodic techno overhaul.

BJSC 163: Castle Rat - Cry For Me

QUOTE
Castle Rat — the story-driven Medieval Fantasy Doom Metal band from Brooklyn known for its theatrical, action-packed live shows complete with full costumes, choreographed sword fighting, and fake blood — is releasing their highly anticipated album, Into the Realm, through King Volume Records on April 12th, 2024.

“It's taken a couple years to see this record through, and it is so exciting and rewarding to finally be welcoming it into the world. A huge part of the time it's taken to release it has been finding someone we could trust to see our vision and bring Into The Realm into the universe with the same amount of love and passion we poured into it — and King Volume is undoubtedly that label," wrote vocalist Riley Pinkerton.

Following the release of the project's first two singles ("Feed the Dream" and "Dagger Dragger"), the group returns today with a third cut entitled "Cry For Me."

"'Cry For Me' is a reawakening," writes Pinkerton. "It's the reintegration of every fragment of yourself you've ever pared off or given away, and the sensation of regaining control over a vessel you had once thought to be shattered, unworthy of repair. It is pain and it is becoming well enough to feel that pain, while cherishing this very ability to finally feel. It is the song of the first tingling footstep landing on a treacherous, overgrown path to seek the strength of self-unification."

The arrival of "Cry For Me" comes alongside an accompanying music video, additionally featuring intro track "The Mirror." The visual, filmed entirely on VHS in Upstate NY, finds The Rat Queen in the midst of a snow-shrouded battle, later joining forces with her bandmates for an epic performance of the track.

As Pinkerton wrote on the video and its creation:

"Via the power of The Realm, I was fortunate enough to successfully manifest New York's first (and perhaps only) heavy snowstorm of the winter, in alignment with our video shoot. However, the journey to the location was harrowing — watching cars slip and slide off the highway kept tensions high on the 2+ hour long drive from NYC — but miraculously, the band made it safely upstate. They arrived shaken, but in one piece, and we managed to pull off the entire music video shoot in a matter of hours.

The entire video was shot on VHS by our friend and longtime visual collaborator Kathryn Barnish, who directed and edited the video as well. I also collaborated with Dillan Archer on creating the classically campy castle archway for the video set, which was hosted in his backyard. I am very proud of how this DIY-style production turned out. My aim was for this video to feel like looking through a portal to another time, and the whole team nailed it start to finish."

I'M THE QUEEN OF THE RATS NOW...

163 | : Castle Cat - Cry For Me | [34/41 (125) / 18/32 (53)]

Well our hit streak did have to come to an end as Castle Rat proved to be a little too niche to become our 5th consecutive top 20 showing. We are pleased that at least the song had a few big supporters rather than just everyone thinking it was mid (plus, worth it to finally get top marks from Persephonia yay).

I didn't realise that I'd never given you a gold medal before so hooray for that finally happening now! Was thinking you must be the country I'd given the most points without giving a gold but just checked and I've never given one to Bøtanikkä either (although you overtook them in my all time points given list with this month's 18, should really post a full update of that again some day x).

BJSC 164: Marie Davidson - Y.A.A.M. (Soulwax Version)

QUOTE
Grammy-nominated Marie Davidson’s first release for Soulwax’s DEEWEE imprint, ‘Y.A.A.M.’, was produced by longtime collaborator Pierre Guerineau and is a cathartic response to power dynamics within the music industry. The rawness of the original is complemented by a new version by Soulwax, who previously reworked Davidson’s acclaimed ‘Work it’ anthem.

The original video, was directed and produced by Marie Davidson & Pierre Guerineau and then re-edited by Vincent Lynen at DEEWEE.

BJSC 165: Kalandra - Bardaginn

QUOTE
Spearheaded by four Norwegian/Swedish musicians, Kalandra is a band with roots in melancholic Nordic folk and gritty guitars, weaving ethereal melodies into raw and eerie musical landscapes.

Formed in the beginning of 2011, they’ve spent a decade crafting their own unique sound, building their own studio, whilst also touring and playing support for similar acts such as Gåte, Seigmen, Wardruna and Eivør. Their break came with a cover of ‘Helvegen’ by Wardruna, that amassed over four million views on YouTube. Since leading them to join forces with the acclaimed record label ByNorse Music.

In 2020 their first full-length album ‘The Line’ was released. The album was a journey in introspection, the feelings of wonder, anger, loss and acceptance at watching both your own life and the world around you unfold.

From their studio in Oslo, the band has since created music for the HBO Nordic’s series “Beforeigners” and the full soundtrack to the game series “Kingdom Two Crowns".

'Bardaginn,' derives its name from Old Norse, meaning 'fight' or 'battle,' be it an internal struggle or a confrontation in the real world. The song explores the paradox of life's seeming meaninglessness, yet the inherent human inclination to fight for something, or someone, and how it's a complex and multifaceted aspect of our nature.

So yeah I may've come across this whilst searching for songs similar to 'Ulveham' a few months ago. This has a darker cinematic vibe and really stood out amongst the finds. Eventually I was torn between choosing this or Castle Rat so decided I'd go for both of them two contests apart, so this has been planned a short while now. It'll very well likely end up flopping but it's an outstanding track that deserves an audience and hopefully it can get a good niche fanbase here. The music video is a right epic too.

Vote for Air Danæviia by checking in at Gate 6 at Terminal 1.

Welcome on board Danæviia - don't forget to check into Gate 15 to vote for Kalandra 'Bardaginn'.

The song is the first foreign language entry of ours to qualify since 2019 (although we'd only sent one further such entry since)

QUOTE(Daan @ 10th April 2022, 08:13 PM) *
The Danævii Times Breaking News

The Danævii general election has just come to its conclusion and for the first time since Tim Bergling’s landslide victory the Orange Party has been ousted by the progressive rival Blue Diamond Party. As is now the law in the interest of gender equality there will now be a male and female President, congratulations go to Nora En Pure and Gareth Emery who now de-seat Jess Glynne and Calvin Harris.

Also gaining seats in Parliament are the Green Energy Party, the Shut Up and Party, the All Night Dance Party and the controversial anarchist group We Don’t Wanna Party.

Ms Pure says “this is a wonderful opportunity to make Danæviia a more beautiful and affordable place to live in. as promised in our manifesto we will be sending free WiFi to every household and half the price of rail travel as well as putting more funding into the EDM School for the Youth to keep Danaeviia as the top exporter of quality dance music for the foreseeable future. it is also most pleasing that my environment agenda of the restoration of our Wetlands will be able to get underway imminently.” Mr Emery celebrated the news at his latest live show going all out on the lasers and fireworks budget.

the outgoing Ms Glynne was unavailable for comment but was recently spotted having a cry in at the local Sexy Fish. Mr Harris was surprised to learn of his loss as he was unaware there was even an election on having not done any Presidential work for nearly a year.

The Danævii Times Breaking News

A snap generic election has now been called as there was a controversial misuse of finances within the Blue Diamond Party. Senior figures of the Party were accused of shady autoplay and playlisting deals with Dottify to artificially boost sales figures and chart positions of the artists signed under their label. Party co-leader Gareth Emery spoke in a statement "I in no uncertain terms condemn the actions of any parties involved in the gross manipulation of our music industry. We will place an investigation to ensure fairness for all artists and uphold the reputation of our fine country's greatest export."

Meanwhile opposition parties have criticised Mr Emery's use of taxpayer money to fund laser effects at EDM shows. Co-leader of the Orange Party Kevin 'Worakls' Rodrigues has placed a promise in the party manifesto to give live shows a more 'music-focused approach' rather than what he calls the 'over-reliance of gimmicks'. He will be running alongside Adrianne Lenker who recently had an unexpected viral hit in the country that has traditionally only sent dance music, having defied odds to place top 5 in the contest with the piano ballad 'Ruined'.

As for the Former Presidents; Ms Glynne's recent book 10 Years To Save Twiikande was panned by critics and reportedly sold less than a thousand copies. Asked for comment she only came back with "that is a disgrace". Mr Harris remains out of the country and unavailable for comment.

Polling suggests a tight race for who will be the governing party out of the 'big two'. The Green Energy Party are also making gains having suggested Nora En Pure's environmental agenda hasn't gone far enough in the two years since the previous election. The We Don't Wanna Party also attracted further notoriety for attracting recent Eurovision entrant Windows95Man as their party leader. The party manifesto has shrunk considerably down to simply stating... "No rules".

The Danævii Times Breaking News

The results of the Danævii general election were revealed at the weekend and in a shock to the pollsters a hung parliament has been declared thanks to the Green Energy Party doing much better than expected. The Blue Diamond Party's vote share collapsed to 32% which saw them just short of a parliamentary majority. However as they still won the most seats, Gareth Emery and Nora En Pure will remain as the nation's Presidents ruling by minority government.

Ms Pure commented "We have listened to the concerns expressed by the Green Energy Party and are pleased to announce we have come to an agreement over negotiations about our environmental policy. As such we will ensure some of their targets are worked towards in favour for their support of our economic policies in parliament". The deal has upset Orange Party supporters who were hoping that the finances scandal would have secured them the Presidency. Mr Emery only had this to say "Well of course we won, people really like f***ing lasers". A senior party spokesperson did also confirm a plan in place to prevent future autoplayola deals. Although the top item on today's agenda is the laser budget for our next BJSC entry...

BJSC 166: Tinlicker (feat. Brian Molko) - Nowhere To Go

About time we sent Tinlicker, a big fave of Danæviia listening public. They are a Dutch electronic duo best known for their 2017 hit 'Because You Move Me'. Their latest album 'Cold Enough For Snow' was released earlier in the year with 'Nowhere To Go' as the instant stand-out, featuring vocals from Brian Molko - lead singer of Placebo. The song currently places in the top 10 most streamed songs of the year in the country so hopefully that bodes well for another high placing for us in the leaderboard here.

“The moment you hear his voice, you know it’s Brian Molko. He has such an iconic sound and having the opportunity to have him over in studio still feels a bit surreal. We love the way he dares to address topics that have curtain taboos, but he has the strength to give the dark a name and put it in the limelight. Nowhere to go does exactly this and in combination with our sound you get this beautiful feeling of relief.” - Tinlicker

166 | : Tinlicker (feat. Brian Molko) - Nowhere To Go | [05/42 (237) / 03/28 (99)]

Another hit for Danæviia as Tinlicker bring us back into the top five of the scoreboard! It places as our second-biggest of the year (and our biggest dance hit) narrowly behind Adrianne Lenker's 'Ruined' that finished in 4th in the year's first contest. Also serving as some well-earned justice for Tinlicker besting their previous entry 'Lost' which placed 18th.

BJSC 167: Aaron Hibell - levitation (extended icelandic version)

An outstanding piece of techno/trance here, I know it hasn't been that long since Aaron was last sent to BJSC but this has a different vibe going for it and was too good to pass up.

“I know many of you have been asking for an extended version of levitation so here it is. The track originated in its trance form with drums as part of my set in iceland so I decided to call it the 'icelandic version' upon releasing it. I've since fully finished it and now it really feels like an odyssey from beginning to end. I hope you enjoy this version and let me know what you think!” - Aaron Hibell

167 | : Aaron Hibell & Felsmann + Tiley - levitation (extended icelandic version) | [05/41 (220) / 01/28 (109)]

Following Tinlicker's success last contest, we finish 5th once again. In a lower-scoring contest, it is our third-biggest hit of the year behind the aforementioned 'Nowhere To Go' as well as 'Ruined' from earlier in the year which placed 4th. The aim now is to get a full calendar year of qualifying entries for the first time so we look to go big again for our forthcoming landmark 130th entry.
