Soul legend Percy Sledge dies aged 73
He was an American R&B and soul performer who most notably recorded the single "When a Man Loves a Woman" in 1966, an international top 40 hit that the RIAA has certified as gold. Having previously worked as a hospital nurse in the early 60s, he achieved his best success in the mid to late 60s and early 70s with a series of emotional soul songs, in his later years receiving the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Career Achievement Award. He had 15 US Top 100 hits in the late 60s although he only had 2 in the UK with one of them charting twice. Here's a few: When A Man Loves A Woman - US #1 in 1966 -- UK #4 in 1966 & #2 in 1987 Warm & Tender Love - US #17 in 1966 -- UK #34 in 1966 Take Time To Know Her - US #11 in 1968 Come Softly To Me -- one of his last US hits. Baby Help Me -- big on the Northern Soul Scene Your music will always be remembered R.I.P. Percy This post has been edited by poppet15: 14th April 2015, 04:00 PM |

when a man loves a woman is one of the great soul vocal performances, and being remembered for just that is a good achievement (the rest are bonuses)
