Today marks 20 years since the release of 'On a Night Like This', the second single from Light Years and follow-up to Kylie's #1 comeback record 'Spinning Around'. Now a Kylie classic, the song was originally recorded by Swedish singer Pandora before being handed over to Parlophone. The song's Europop sound captures the mood of Ibiza as Kylie sings of an unique night filled with pleasure and euphoria. Critics enjoyed this further exploration into the dance world and it became another chart success, particularly in Australia where it placed #1 upon debut and a few weeks later following Kylie's performance at the 2000 Olympics Closing Ceremony.
20 years on, what are your thoughts and memories on this single?
I have always enjoyed on a night like this and its my fave single from light years but i dont love it as much as many others do, i also prefer many other tracks from light years aswell.
So much love for this song and even though I was estatic that SA returned Kylie to chart glory I much preferred this
Love it, always on my Top 5.
Always preferred it to spinning around,,shame it missed number 1 but I loved it went top 2 cementing kylies top 2 return showing spinning around was no fluke and kylie was back as a major player.
Much better than Spinning Around and remains hugely popular.
It's quite possibly my favourite song ever, everything a perfect pop song should be.
I loved the Olympics performance of it.
I really liked this when I was younger, along with Jennifer Lopez - Waiting For Tonight and Vanessa Amorosi - Absolutely Everybody its a good example of the Latin house influence in some pop music of the time.
Also love to the abbey road version
Great performance on Royal Variety with this
Still her best song. It really was the song that made me a fan of hers to begin with
This is the song that made me a Kylie fan, after not enjoying Spinning Around the first time around. Still one of her best for me.
One of her best
Def in top 3 for me
A solid single with many greater than it.
The cover was the best from the light years singles and it was a good video aswell.
It was a strong choice as second single but Kids was a talking point during its release as there was hype circulating for the Kylie and Robbie duet.
Forgot to comment on this myself! This is one of my favourite Kylie songs too, I think only second to 'In Your Eyes'. I love the Euro sound, it's full of emotion and is the perfect backdrop for Kylie's soaring vocals. Hearing her perform it on the Golden Tour was a dream!
Big fan of the Abbey Road version too, although I feel it was a little too big towards the end for her to perfectly pull off live.
Little behind-the-scenes clip I found, where Kylie talks a bit about the song as well as achieving her first #1 single in ten years:
