Winner: ="Vogue"

So there you have it, after many months of voting and round after round of each iconic hit dropping and dropping, we finally have our winner in what some might think quite an unlikely but welcomed winner 'Vogue'. Madonna's first hit of the 90's and talk about kicking off a new decade with such style and grace, as well as becoming one her most iconic and well known numbers, a song that was so big that it not only topped the charts in over 30 countries upon release and not only selling 6 Million copies worldwide but also becoming the biggest selling single of 1990 and no wonder it got added to her 'I'm Breathless' soundtrack for the Dick Tracy movie (even though it didn't fit the theme) and helped that album sell by the bucket loads. This also marked the beginning of a phase of her career that oscillates between cynical self-exploitation and courageous self-expression. Raunchy videos, explicitly themed lyrics and boudoir beats and coming at the tail end of 'The Immaculate Collection' along with other tracks 'Justify My Love' & 'Rescue Me', these also fit that theme of the direction she was heading.

The song was inspired by vogue dancers and choreographers Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza and Luis Xtravaganza from the Harlem "House Ball" community, the origin of the dance form, and they introduced "Vogueing" to her at the Sound Factory club in New York City. Warner Music head of dance music Craig Kostich approached Pettibone with the idea of collaborating with Madonna on a new song and only given a limited time and budget to record the song and was then submitted to Warner Bros after just 3 weeks. Originally planned as a B-Side, everyone involved knew they had something special on their hands and felt that it was too good to be wasted and therefore got released a single in its own right.

'Keep It Together' was planned as the next single, but after presenting 'Vogue' to the label exec's, it was felt that this was better option and while 'KIT' did get released, it only got a limited release in just a few select countries including Canada, USA, Italy, Japan and as a double a-side in Australia. While 'Vogue' got a full scale release worldwide and became an instant classic.

Runner Up: "Papa Don't Preach"

In the runner up spot we have yet another classic Madonna track 'Papa Don't Preach' which I bet many thought would be the winner, and was neck and neck for a bit, but got edged out in the end and ended up in 2nd place, which by no means a bad thing and considering what else features on the 'Immaculate Collection', the fact its lasted this long is quite a huge feat.

Released in 1986 as the 2nd single from her mammoth 'True Blue' album, the song became another instant commercial success for the Queen of Pop by topping the UK and USA charts as well as many other countries worldwide. This is an extraordinary, complex and expansive track, perhaps a watershed in pop history. In dealing with an unplanned pregnancy, it also layers the narrative with the pregnant woman’s relationship with her father. For Madonna was raised a Catholic and she lost her mother when she was young. She subsequently held tight to her dad, and in the context of her that upbringing the song is emotionally honest and explosively raw. Definitely one of her greatest numbers and probably one of the best lyrically songs she's ever delivered.

So a perfect result if you ask me and thanks to everybody on Buzzjack whose voted in these polls and made all this happen...

Went with STR for the next survivor, partly so it's in order and partly because ballads are perfect for winter!
