BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Record Store Day 2019

Posted by: ThePensmith 19th February 2019, 04:25 PM

It's back for another year in over 200 independent record stores across the UK on Saturday, 13th April. The release list for this year is being unveiled next Thursday, 28th February. Quite a few launch events for it are taking place - one of my local stores, Intense in Chelmsford are holding a free launch party from 5pm next Thursday.

Do any other Buzzjackers partake in Record Store Day? If so, how many years have you been doing it, and what are you hoping to find on the release list this year?

I've been doing it for the last two years now. In 2017 I got the pink 7" of 'Barbie Girl' by Aqua, last year I got Niall Horan's 'Mirrors' 10" EP and the clear vinyl of Elton John vs Pnau's 'Good Morning To The Night' album.

I always enjoy the element of surprise that comes with Record Store Day, so I look forward to seeing who'll be on the list this year. Maybe some 20th anniversary releases for some 1999 albums/singles?

I'm super excited for Record Store Day as ever and I also started taking part in 2017! My hauls were as follows:

2017
- The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star (picture disc)
- Little Mix - Glory Days (neon pink vinyl)
- Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - El Mexicano (picture disc)
- Ryo Kawasaki - Selected Works Part 2 - 1976 - 1980

2018
- Fatboy Slim - Right Here, Right Now (CamelPhat Remix)
- Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea & David Fleming - Blue Planet II soundtrack (blue vinyl)
- Max Richter - The Blue Notebooks (blue vinyl)
- Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - It's A Beautiful World (monochrome vinyl) - my brother ended up buying this off me though laugh.gif
- Sigrid - Don't Kill My Vibe EP (red vinyl)

I hope there are some 20th edition 1999 releases, Alex! Particularly dance 7" ones as it was a very strong year for the genre.

I'm still drama.gif at myself for paying over the odds for the Little Mix Glory Days vinyl on eBay (I think I paid about £35), thinking it was some one-day highly limited RSD exclusive, only for it to wind up on Amazon within weeks and retail for as low as £8.99 at one point in time :')

RSD rarely caters to my tastes tbh cry.gif I got Miguel's War & Leisure vinyl last year though!

Wow, quite a good haul on both years there Jade! I was actually after the Fatboy Slim one too but both my local stores in Chelmsford and Braintree didn't have it. They did have however, the Madonna 'You Can Dance' vinyl that was on the release list last year for weeks afterwards. I half considered getting it!

Surprised re: your Little Mix debacle Jay. I think the lack of genre inclusivity was probably what kept many - myself included - from participating in previous years but I'd like to think that more recent times has seen them broaden horizons and tastes a bit. I remember being so scared of going to my first RSD thinking it was gonna be like something out of the film 'High Fidelity', which fortunately didn't happen!

I would but I don't have a local record store. Nearest in HMV in Cardiff which is about 25 miles from me.

Posted by: sammy01 19th February 2019, 05:08 PM

Problem is you can often get the stuff after record store day now so the rush to get something from a record store has gone.

I got Tori Amos Y kant tori read from my boyfriend for xmas last year off Amazon after it was released In 2017, which kind of defeats the point of supporting local record stores.

I don't know which direction Cardiff is from you but if you want to avoid Spillers then there's a record shop in Aberdare that takes part in Record Store Day too.

What would be the point of releasing a dance single on 7" as opposed to 12"?

Mess I meant 12” laugh.gif ignore me I’m currently sleep deprived

There really isnt a market for this, there wasn't when they were active.

The release list is here! https://recordstoreday.co.uk/media/1018127/rsd19-releases-printable-280219-6pm.pdf

I've got my eye on Robyn and Bananarama. Possibly The Mighty Boosh 3LP set as well.

I’ll post my wishlist later as I’m on a phone and it’s fairly long but I’m shook at ‘Baby Shark’ by Pinkfong being amongst the releases laugh.gif *.*

I'm a bit tempted by the Bingo Hand Job. Wait, maybe I should rephrase that... https://recordstoreday.co.uk/releases/rsd-2019/bingo-hand-job/

But doesn't that exactly highlight my earlier point? They are making it more inclusive. I'm reminded of the first year I did it and Aqua 'Barbie Girl' on a bright pink vinyl was on the release list. You wouldn't have got that when it first started 12 years ago.

For that same reason am slightly tempted by the Ace of Base picture disc this year!

Julien Baker - Red door <3

I find record store day a bit stressful tbh. One because there are so many releases and two because stores sometimes get 1-2 copies, I’ve had better luck getting releases a week later when they are allowed to sell left over stock online or via Amazon for half the original price months later!

My favourite releases are by Kylie (Golden Boy 7’ etched disc and All The Lovers/Los Amores 7’).

I’m going after Sam Fender’s ‘Play God’ 7’ this year although I won’t be too bothered if I can’t track it down as his independently released version of it is superior tbh (One sided white vinyl 7’) which I already have.

Yes I love that more mainstream acts are getting involved - we’ve had Kylie and Spice Girls in recent years with Bananarama etc., this year.

How the heck do you manage to play these seven foot discs? In fact, how do you even get them home? laugh.gif

There’s never been a Spice Girls release for RSD!

I mean it’s a platinum album, and if Bamnanarama can release a bunch of their duo albums that weren’t very successful for WRSD, I think there is a market tbh.
