BuzzJack Music Forum _ Ariana Grande _ thank u, next • 5th Album

Posted by: SweetButJonjo👻 3rd October 2018, 09:09 PM

So there are reports going around that Ariana is already in the studio recording her new album! In fact, strong reports are saying this album will be out so that she has 2 albums to tour with...

What do you want from Ari 5?

Posted by: SweetButJonjo👻 3rd October 2018, 09:14 PM

Isn't it obvious? MORE MAX and no Pharrell x

But seriously, I'm intrigued to see where they take her with this album. The fact that 'Sweetener' is as big as it is even with the middling to poor reviews shows that people are here for her and I think it'd be a smart move in order to really elevate her to the next level.Providing she gives us the NTLTC/GIAW/breathin' type bangers. Another 'Sweetener' on the whole and I think she will have peaked at least for a while.

She is going through such a hard time mentally atm so I'm sure just being in the studio is a theraputic session for her. Give us the raw emotion, use it to her advantage <3

I'm here for this decision overall though. New Ari is always good (I love Sweetener - I just had to reshuffle the tracklisting lol)

This to be her Kamikaze pls laugh.gif

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 4th October 2018, 09:56 AM

I knew she was trolling us with that recent album! Here comes the real one.

Posted by: Theo. 4th October 2018, 10:12 AM

I think people are reading into her recent Instagrams too much? Surely she's just posting studio photos from the 'Sweetener' sessions? Also she needs to push "Breathin'" properly before a new album!!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 4th October 2018, 10:45 PM

yeah I really don’t think we’re getting a new album in the next 12 months at least. She may well be recording album 5 but it’ll be a long way off yet There’s still singles to push from this current album what’s only 6 weeks old yet.

However possibly just maybe the tour rumour may be true.
It could be like Madonna’s drowned world tour promoted both Ray Of Light and Music two very different albums.
And Sweetener is essentially her ‘music’ album experimental, upbeat etc so the next album could be her Ray Of Light where she shocks us all. If the album comes out in July/Aug next year then the tour could run from late 2019 until 2020.

Posted by: Sonia Fowler 5th October 2018, 09:43 AM

One hand I could see her releasing another album. However although the album didn't receive the best reviews she just released it and speaks highly of it iirc so I'm unsure whether she will in the next year. New music from her is always good though.

It was a positively received album in terms of reviews!

pity. i hands down refuse to believe that critics sat + listened to this and felt positively about it. if what happened hadn't happened this album would've been dragged.

Posted by: Hexton 6th October 2018, 05:54 AM

The highs of the album way outweigh the lows which is probably part of it. It’s not the most cohesive of albums but pop albums rarely are anything more than a collection of basic songs surrounded by singles (Anne-Marie I’m looking at you x). No Tears is one of the best songs of 2018 so far and God is a woman & breathin are excellent too.

I really want to wish this wasn't the case, but I don't see any other explanation. There's a handful of really good songs, great even. The rest are shit.

I don't think that's fair to insinuate that she got pity reviews because of what happened. What some people might deem as not good enough some critics might consider it to be musical gold. I understand many things about the album reviews and I agree its probably her most personal and cohesive to date. It was hardly a hit after hit worthy album like DW was but I highly doubt that it was intended to be that.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 6th October 2018, 11:38 PM

I really don't believe that critics only praised Sweetener out of "pity" for an awful situation she experienced. I think Ariana deserves far more credit than that. It's okay if Sweetener isn't to everyone's tastes, but I find it a bit off to be incredulous about the validity of her reviews as if your thoughts on the album's quality are paramount over that of the numerous reviewers who praised many aspects of the record musically (her artistry / vocal performance / soundscapes) without relating it to Manchester.

some, not all.. it got almost universal acclaim. it's being realistic - they have been very easy on her because of what happened + it's naive to think otherwise.

i love ariana so let's not get it twisted. i do, however, think she's being given too much credit.

here's the thing; it's not a personal album. and it's not cohesive, quite the opposite. how can a beyonce demo be personal to ariana?
there are three parts to the album mixed up to make it seem like there was an idea there.
the sh!t songs were written by pharrell + have pharrell-by-numbers productions, the okay-to-good tracks were done by tommy brown+co and the great tracks are by max, savan + ilya.

when pharrell was commissioned to produce on the album, he was already working with justin timberlake + on the NERD album and the label thought they were going to be massive/ he was going to be hot property.
they flopped + probably couldn't get her to work with anyone else once the album was done and they just figured they'd push the (only) good tracks. (ntltc, giaw + breathin')

TBF, I don't think it is being naive because that is just your opinion on the subject and mine is different. That's all it is. I'm not being a blind stan to whether she is getting pity reviews or not. I just think it isn't pity reviews based on what various reviewers had said about the album and I can see their viewpoints.

you’re right, it’s not naive - i apologise! upon reflection whilst i can see it’s not pity, i think it’s more about critics being a little generous toward her, for whatever reason.

i do hope that she’s taking care of herself, physically + mentally because she’s literally my fave pop star and i’d hate something to affect her wanting to do it. she makes it so easy to love her wub.gif

These studio pics are from The Sweetener sessions I guess

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE 9th October 2018, 08:54 AM

‘Sweetner’ was hot property for Ariana. If she wanted to work with anyone she could. Its not the album I expected from her but nevertheless i love it and ‘rem’ is a great record.

Posted by: LewisGT 25th October 2018, 03:07 PM

Somebody on twitter asked her if it's coming this year and she replied with "hehehe idk".

She also hinted that the tour will be for both albums.

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE 25th October 2018, 04:12 PM

Well seeing as ‘breathin’ will not peak on radio until january. Its deffo not coming this year.

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE 25th October 2018, 04:12 PM

Plus i dont see why they wouldnt push ‘rem’

Aww R.E.M is my favourite album track <3 It reminds me of 'Be Careful' tbh. defo wouldn't work as a single though laugh.gif

Posted by: Juliano 26th October 2018, 03:48 PM

I love R.E.M. also, however I feel like Everytime would work better. If she is moving on to AG5 straight away, would be better to follow up Breathin with a brand new banger.

Posted by: Theo. 26th October 2018, 04:34 PM

"REM" would be a terrible single choice. I don't think a new album is coming this year or the tour wouldn't be named after 'Sweetener'. She might release an EP or a couple of random tracks though to bulk up decent new songs to perform on tour.

Rihanna is releasing in early 2019.

I hope Ari releases first so she doesn’t get overshadowed.

I’m presuming Arianas album is all done and ready to go so hopefully she’ll release it in time for Grammy/Brits season heart.gif

Can’t wait to hear this though her albums are all solid bops but her last two both just soared and I think she’s yet to peak and this could be that peak!

'Fake Smile' is said to sample 'After Laughter Comes Tears' by Wendy Rene apparently.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 23rd January 2019, 01:19 AM

Tracklisting according to a fanpage I follow is

1. imagine
2. needy
3. NASA
4. bloodline
5. fake smile
6. bad idea
7. make up
8. ghostin
9. in my head
10. 7 rings
11. thank u, next
12. break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored

so remember is no longer there unless it’s been renamed
and thank u, next is no longer the closing track too.
She also stated she knows what single 3 is gonna be already. I’m gonna guess at needy but whatever she releases is gonna slay.
I guess whatever the third highest track is on release week might be the next single as 7 rings will probably still be #1 and the title track has already done fantastic and is still smashing , it’s possible whatever does next might be the next single iirc Breathin become a single because it debuted top 10 album release week of sweetener (and was on a playlist too)?

I dunno why but I had needy down as being a ballad in my head. (Edit I’m not referring to the song in my head there just I sort of thiught it may have been a ballad or mid tempo rather than a upbeat banger).

I think NASA might be more greedy like.

I wish you were right sad.gif Apparently the physical has a different artwork though.

Posted by: liamk97 23rd January 2019, 11:06 AM

I think it looks alright but it's more single cover than album. I guess if the physical has a different cover then it doesn't really matter, assuming they make an effort for that.

I feel they could have done more with the cover for Sweetener but at least that had something about it that would catch on with the internet.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 23rd January 2019, 12:27 PM

Meh. The cover isn’t terrible but I imagine the physical will be better.

The cover I have for Dangerous Woman on my CD copy is better than the iTunes / Spotify covers for it.

Posted by: Juliano 23rd January 2019, 12:55 PM

If it's not showing her face on the cover then not putting her name is a bit strange. Also there's no explicit content label, so it hardly looks official. Weird. I don't completely dislike it however.

Bloodline and Bad Idea are both incredible *.*

The strings on Bad Idea took my by surprise!!! Incredible

I'd say it's probably her best album for me.

Posted by: Juliano 8th February 2019, 01:33 AM

OH WOW! GREAT album, better than Sweetener, although I still prefer Dangerous Woman. GREAT tracks throughout! I need Bloodline (Sassy Side to Side 0.2) and Bad Idea (JAM!!) single releases. Bad Idea sounds like it's on the same wavelength of No Tears, I actually love it just as much too! I'd say it could have worked as a follow up for it.

Love break up, feel like it will be a big grower, however I do feel Bloodline and Bad Idea are stronger. Will be mad if this era doesn't spawn 5 singles and those are IT and all MASSIVE sounding!

Posted by: Liаm 8th February 2019, 02:30 AM

First listen, Bad Idea is definitely my highlight wub.gif

Imagine - a great opener, always felt this was a more of a nice album track and it works better as part of the package.
Needy - vibey and relatable, can't go wrong tbh
NASA - love the trappy production, hits a bit harder than some of the more "vibey" tracks on the album
Bloodline - BOP, definitely gives me Side To Side vibes but dare I say it's better?!
Fake Smile - kinda filler, other tracks on the album do the same job but better
Bad Idea - this is IT, what a bop *.* It kinda feels like Bad Liar by Selena Gomez mixed with No Tears with a sprinkling of the overall aesthetic of this album, lushhhh wub.gif The last bit after the string outro isn't needed though, that kinda feels like the credits bit of a video? laugh.gif
Make Up - gives me slight R.E.M teas, cute enough I guess
Ghostin' - the vocals on this, chillsss wub.gif
In My Head - the melody is fab, lifts it a bit above the filler category
7 Rings - obv still a bop
Thank U Next - really led into the album well, still one of the best
Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored - I love this but I'd definitely have Bad Idea and Bloodline as singles over this, plus probably NASA/Needy too!

Actually really impressed, I wasn't sure what to expect but it all comes together really well as a collection, it's a bit samey in places but that makes it cohesive, and the songs that might not necessarily be huge standouts fit in really well still, I just won't go back to them as much. There's nothing bad on here either! As an actual album, it's probably better than Sweetener for me and I liked that a lot more than many seemed to.

Love this Album wub.gif As a whole I think it’s much better than Sweetner (which I actually grew to really like in the end ) but this album is a lot more cohesive and just more bops I could see being singles .

clicked with this straight away, can't get into 'Sweetner' much at all apart from the singles but I'm onto my 3rd full listen of this already, add NMTLTC, Breathin and GIAW to this and its a full packed album. Make Up the only slight let down for me

It’s so hard to pick a favourite from this. If I had to chose I would probably say Ghostin. She sounds so beautiful on that.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 8th February 2019, 12:32 PM

Wow. There’s no bad songs on the album at all!

Fake Smile stood out to me the most on first listen but I’ll properly rate them after the weekend when all the new tracks have properly sunk in.

A strong album though and I’m so glad I finally get an Ariana album with no features!!

Posted by: blacksquare 8th February 2019, 12:40 PM

Ghostin is one of the best things she's ever done. There are a lot of strong songs here - the last minute of Bad Idea is a moment.

7 Rings remains terrible and Break Up... is barely mediocre. Neither songs sell the album well at all, despite their inevitable success.

Posted by: Liаm 8th February 2019, 03:29 PM

Ghostin samples a Mac Miller song MY HEART

Posted by: SweetButJonjo👻 8th February 2019, 03:42 PM

Finally listening to the album and it's SO GOOD.

NASA, Bloodline and Bad Idea *.* Bloodline is the Side To Side post album type of smash she needs tbh.

Needy is nice, but it's very "extended intro".

Posted by: BotchLikeThis 8th February 2019, 09:20 PM

It's crazy how much better this album is than Sweetener. I feel like this album with the Sweetener singles and "everytime" would have been incredible!

Posted by: Andrew. 8th February 2019, 09:33 PM

The album is good, but "Bloodline" and "Bad Idea" stand out massively amongst the other album tracks, none of which are amazing for me apart from maybe Needy. Sweetener was actually better imo aha.

09 Imagine
08 Needy
06 NASA

This is is up there with sweetener for me I never really got the sweetener shade!

For me bad idea is my least favourite on the entire album gave it three listens now and that’s definitely the one i clicked least with so i hope it’s not a single. .

bloodline, fake smile, ghostin and in my head are all sublime though heart.gif

needy and NASA are enjoyable too but both ended too soon for me both could’ve easily been a minute longer.

Her vocals on ghostin are just perfect and that Mac sample makes it all the more special heart.gif

on another note it’s not a big deal but I think I’ll totally revise the track orders on my iTunes for this, I done the same with sweetener too laugh.gif

aside from that though it’s a solid album. Far better than My Everything and Dangerous Woman and up there with Sweetener and Yours Truly.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 8th February 2019, 09:43 PM

Also the fact that this album was recorded so soon the quality was so high!

Posted by: JosephAvery 8th February 2019, 11:31 PM

bloodline is that SONG omg!! wub.gif

The album as a whole is definitely stronger than Sweetener, dare I say it could be her second best album yet (Dangerous Woman is very hard to beat)??

Based on a couple of listens. Solid and consistently strong. I feel like majority of these are gonna be growers though. 'Ghostin' is really stunning. I feel like overall it's on a par with 'Sweetener'? I feel like she took the 'R.E.M' sound for this album and made it less bland!

Posted by: BotchLikeThis 9th February 2019, 12:00 AM

I'd rank the album after a few listens:

01 bad idea (10/10)
02 bloodline (10/10)
03 thank you, next (10/10)
04 break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored (10/10)
05 NASA (9/10)
06 7 rings (9/10)
07 fake smile (8/10)
08 needy (7.5/10)
09 ghostin' (7.5/10)
10 in my head (7/10)
11 imagine (6.5.10)
12 make up (5/10)

Bad Idea / NTLTC (with video intro) as a pairing on an album would've been so iconic and a career defining combo. Shame they're on different albums lmao.

I think Needy had an early on advantage of being the first track on the album people hadn't heard already (disregarding the insta snippet) and Bloodline will definitely take a stronger lead by the end of the week, not saying that I don't LOVE Needy too though.

I think Adele was the last female to get three #1 debuts in a row like what Arianas just done.

What an insane list of achievements in the UK chart this week!!

Incredible!

I'm so happy how massive this has been for Ari <3

Oh yeah, Taylor will defo be the last to have done it, both peaking and debuting at #1! Slay *.*

65k debut, 20k more than sweetener! It’s crazy how much bigger it is than an album relseased a few months ago with a similar amount of hype

OMG yeah I knew I was missing an obvious one and it was Taylor.

Amazing news though what a feat for Ariana to get heart.gif

On another note is this the quickest a female artist has had two separate albums go to #1 on debut week?

Edit just seen she’s broken a record set by The Beatles by having the shortest gap between number one albums of ANY act male/female/group in UK chart history.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 15th February 2019, 08:08 PM

also

needy is number 8 this week
break up with your gf enters at #1
And imagine was number 8 in December

So already she’s had three number ones from this album, and a total of 5 top 10s from the album!

Without a re release it must’ve been a while for a female album album to do that. It’s already the most top 10s from an Ariana album
My Everything and Sweetener had 3, Dangerous Woman 1 and focus wasn’t on an album.

We could’ve had an Ed style takeover had the 3 track rule not existed.

Still amazing news today and so many records and feats she’s made today with this album!

Really hope she gets another week at #1 now!

It's been a week so I think I'm fully ready to have a ranking. Placing the pre-album songs was incredibly difficult.

1. Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored
2. Thank U, Next
3. 7 Rings
4. Ghostin
5. Bad Idea
6. NASA
7. Make Up
8. Needy
9. Imagine
10. Fake Smile
11. In My Head
12. Bloodline

Posted by: Jordan Lee 16th February 2019, 01:20 AM

bad idea is still my least favourite one week on.

break up with your gf is still growing.

I LOVEEE in my head now as well.

my rate atm is

1. bloodline
2. thank u, next
3. ghostin
4. fake smile
5. imagine
6. 7 rings
7. in my head
8. break up with your gf i’m bored
9. needy
10. NASA
11. make up
12. bad idea

but 1-10 are all at least a 8.5/10, make up a 7 but would be an 8 if longer, NASA and needy are also too short in my opinion.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 16th February 2019, 02:20 PM

This is now £6.99 on UK iTunes don’t know if it’s a limited offer but was £10.99 last time I seen.

Posted by: Cqmerqn 16th February 2019, 04:19 PM

It’s also £7 on CD pretty much everywhere now

Posted by: Juliano 17th February 2019, 07:12 PM

Since it's quite clear this era needs dragging out Teenage Dream style, i've decided my ideal single run.

1. thank u, next
2. 7 rings
3. break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored
4. bloodline
5. NASA
6. bad idea
7. needy (might as well)

It's like Leave Me Lonely's more subtle and less in your face sister.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 18th February 2019, 05:09 PM

On course to stay at #1 for a 2nd week in the UK, which will make it her first album to manage more than a week! (Dangerous Woman went 1-8, Sweetener 1-3).

Posted by: Jordan Lee 18th February 2019, 06:51 PM

I think she’ll manage to do it.

TGS has promo from BRITS but I think that’ll carry into next weeks chart, same as ASIB with the oscars.

Will probably sell around 25-30K combined this week.

She’s not comfirmed at the moment but I’m really hoping she is since she’s nominated for an award.

They invited her last year and she didn’t do it but this year she’s literally #1 on both charts at the time of the ceremony and would surely be the biggest performance of the night.

Fingers crossed she’s a surprise performer.

It's great to see her achieving a huge chart record that isn't confined to 'by a female artist' (this one is still 'by a solo artist' as it was done by The Beatles, but that still sounds better). Pretty amazing that she pulled this one off before Drake did.

Damn her blocking herself from that third #1 tho. </3

Posted by: danG 20th February 2019, 12:47 PM

under the old UK chart rules she'd have had

1 break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored
2 7 rings
8 thank u, next
10 needy
11 bloodline
12 nasa
13 bad idea
14 fake smile
16 ghostin

21 in my head
22 make up

not quite Ed Sheeran levels of domination but still very impressive.

Have just listened to 'bad idea' and I'm loving it, this to be the next single pls. (I'm guessing it'll probably be 'bloodline' if anything though - I'm not really so keen on that song, it's fine but not really my thing, sounds a bit like 'Side To Side' which I wasn't a fan of).

I've heard nearly every song on this album now so I might as well listen to the last ~3 songs and do a rate of it some time soon xo 'break up...' is comfortably the best on there though unless there's a major surprise among the last few I've not listened to yet, I'm really surprised at how badly it seems to have been received on here??

‘Needy’ is 100% the next single because its the ‘stan’ favourite. I mean it charted highest when the album premiered. Oersonally idgi & i think it’ll perform similar to miley’s ‘adore you’ which had the same album-release feedback.

It charted so high coz it was the first new song on the album. Those tracks always chart highest in first week (unless the artist hypes something up - Little Mix with 'Strip' for example)

Posted by: Bangtan Cody 18th March 2019, 06:43 AM

tbh Needy seems like the next obvious choice for reasons that have already been listed. It's the only album track that managed to chart in the UK bc of OCC chart manipulation so clearly there's some sort of appeal there (even if it doesn't attract Buzzjack for the sole purpose that it isn't Bloodline or Bad Idea).

Can she like wait another 2-3 months tho. She's literally crammed three singles in 3, maybe 4 months, I fear that it's gonna end up doing what Company did for Bieber bc of Ariana overload.

Posted by: Juliano 18th March 2019, 04:37 PM

Needy IS cute and a lovely single choice, but she better bring it with the video. Bloodline screams out American Horror Story theme (could save it for Halloween time) and in Bad Idea she or someone could be like a mad scientist that creates like a cyborg Ariana, or she is in some sort of Asylum being experimented on. Live for that IDEA! NASA speaks for itself I guess. Those are the 3 tracks I need videos for, whether official singles or not.

I kinda agree. Is break up with your gf still to get a big us push as well? I know it debuted at #1 here but in the US 7 rings is still overshadowing that.

I do hope the album stretches out though and I hope we don’t get another one so soon after this as it would just mean potential wasted when there’s many singles what could smash to be fair no matter what she releases will do well biggrin.gif

I guess most of 'thank u, next' is still left in that rate anyway kink.gif this video was fantastic, Zach really conducted the interview well (big respect to him for taking the hint when it was getting too hard to continue talking about 'ghostin', then swiftly moving on) and it was so informative about the whole thought process behind the record, as you'd hope from the duration of the video. It’s already there!

I'm pretty sure 'Needy' only has that many due to it being released as a promo track.

fake smile and ghostin deserve better

But make up being the lowest isn’t too surprising

Wonder if 7 rings will overtake tun wonder what’ll cross 1B first

It benefitted from being the first unknown track on the album when people were streaming it on album release week. It's why I think both bloodline and bad idea will overtake. Wasn't bloodline close to overtaking it in the charts and almost stopped it charting (due to 3 track rule ofc)? which makes it even more surprising that NASA is the highest album track.

Posted by: Klimawechsel 22nd September 2019, 12:12 PM

Needy is that high because of it's positioning on the album! Casual streamers would stream the beginning half of the album plus singles so the likes of 'in my head', 'make up' and 'ghostin' are left behind!

My faves vary quite a bit! I think currently it would be 'ghostin', 'break up with your girlfriend' and 'bad idea', although I loved thank u next and 7 rings at the time. Imagine is also an impressive song thanks to the vocals and bloodline and fake smile also bop too! Basically a very strong album throughout! I could live without 'in my head', 'make up' and 'NASA' but none of them take away from the strength of the whole album.

Posted by: Cqmerqn 22nd September 2019, 12:48 PM

Yeah, but, the albums been out for 9 months now, so surely Bloodline and Bad Idea will have already overtaken by now? Most people who listen to the album have probably listened to it before, so they know what to skip etc.. it does seem to be a bit of a fan favourite, despite not being very popular here!

Posted by: Juliano 22nd September 2019, 05:06 PM

Nice to see that 'in my head' got a pretty nice boost from Vogue, because at first I think it was trailing quite a lot! The potential of this album was just too much, the waste is unfortunate. I guess we will be seeing some more album track certifications soon.

Posted by: LewisGT 23rd September 2019, 07:20 PM

It's a shame that Make Up is so far behind everything else. sad.gif

I hope Ghostin can climb above Fake Smile at least.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 9th October 2019, 05:37 PM

Listened to this in full today and it was like bop after bop.

Been a while since I’d heard it as a whole album but I play bloodline and fake smile all the time as individual tracks.

Disappointing to see this fall out of the top 40 for the first time to #41 after 34 consecutive weeks inside of it.

Posted by: Jade 13th October 2019, 12:13 AM

Aw sad.gif a shame that the consecutive run is over but hopefully it'll re-enter this week as she has London shows on Tuesday and Wednesday!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 13th October 2019, 01:13 AM

Yeah it should re enter this week.

Also a bit late but it is now her longest running UK Top 40 album

Yours Truly 1 week
My Everything 16 weeks
Dangerous Woman 26 weeks
Sweetener 30 weeks
Thank U Next 34 (thus far)

An improvement upon each album!

Posted by: Jade 13th October 2019, 01:20 AM

1 week for 'Yours Truly' looks so wrong laugh.gif thanks for the longevity stats - the way her career skyrocketed more and more is so impressive.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 13th October 2019, 01:25 AM

Yours Truly the UK really did dirty!

I think a lot of people from here probably think that Problem was her first single though and if they were to say I loved her first album they’d probably be talking about My Everything.

If Yours Truly had followed up that album UK wise I think it would’ve done a lot better.

Also for anyone wanting to see her singles chart runs and albums chart runs for the entire top 100 you can view them all here smile.gif

Wow! I haven’t even thought about albums of the decade yet but would you guys consider this one of your albums of the year? It’s still #1 for me in 2019 (with Billie Eilish, James Blake, Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift likely completing my top 5) - I think Coldplay’s album is the only release left this year that I’m majorly excited for, so her crown will probably be safe. My last.fm stats speak for themselves, I have had this album on so much this year, plus that doesn’t even account for vinyl plays. She captured her overwhelming emotions beautifully on this record and also provided a handful of bangers along the way!

Posted by: Jonjo 19th November 2019, 08:39 PM

Yeah it's my fave album of the year so far. I'm really struggling for albums this year! :/

I really hope Tinashe delivers later this week!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 20th November 2019, 12:16 PM

This year it’s one of my favourite albums for sure! But of this decade I don’t think it’s in my top 5 female albums.

It’s not her best album for me maybe her second best though.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 20th November 2019, 01:42 PM

It’s nominated for album of the year at the GRAMMYs.

Posted by: Jade 20th November 2019, 04:22 PM

Incredible wub.gif it's also nominated for 'best pop vocal album' which she won last year for 'Sweetener'!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 20th November 2019, 05:18 PM

Best pop vocal album seems her most likely award in my opinion.. but she has stronger competition this year.

But I’m really happy with her nominations!

Posted by: Liаm 20th November 2019, 08:24 PM

I completely forgot it was 2019, feels like late 2018 but that was just the title track.

It would probably be top 5 for me behind Taylor, Lizzo and Billie but I'm the same as Jonjo, I'm struggling in terms of albums for an EOY! There's a lot I've listened to and enjoyed but when I think of putting them in my top 5/10 they don't feel "that" good laugh.gif

QUOTE
1. Ariana Grande, Thank U, Next

“I find it interesting that this has been one of the best years of my career and the worst of my life,” said Ariana Grande while accepting the award for Billboard’s Woman of the Year in 2018. That year, Grande got engaged to (and broke up with) SNL star Pete Davidson, released the Billboard 200-topping album Sweetener, and lost rapper ex-boyfriend Mac Miller to a drug overdose. In the aftermath, she found solace in the studio, sipping champagne with friends and collaborators (including Tayla Parx and Victoria Monét), while writing and recording the best album of her career in only two weeks, Thank U, Next.

Grande’s description of her fifth full-length as “like if First Wives Club were an album” was spot-on, as the 12 songs were all about liberation -- from guilt, emotional restraint, and impossible expectations. But rather than a bombastic expression of freedom, Grande kept most of the songs mid-tempo, bass-focused and spacious, lightly skipping through verses more often than belting them out: “And I won’t say I’m feeling fine/ After what I’ve been through, I can’t lie,” she confesses on “Fake Smile.” Grande has been clowned in the past for not enunciating, but on this album, her softer delivery allows for none of her words to go unnoticed, whether admitting her desire for attention on “Needy,” asking for space on “NASA,” moving on on the title track or trying to steal your man on “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored.” But the most poignant line comes on the hazy, possibly Miller-referencing “Ghostin’,” when she sings, “We’ll get through this, we’ll get past this, I’m a girl with/ A whole lot of baggage,” a message sent out to those around her as much as to herself.

When Thank U, Next was released on Republic in February, it not only debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, but also marked the biggest streaming week ever for a pop album, and resulted in her becoming the first artist since The Beatles to score the top three songs on the same Hot 100. “As far as my personal life goes, I really have no idea what the f--k I’m doing,” she admitted at Women in Music. The same was not true of her music, and on this album, the pop princess officially became a queen. -- C.W.

I'm pleased that 'ghostin' was highlighted for its lyrical content in that write-up. heart.gif

Speaking of ghostin'... it is #13 on The Fader's 'The 25 best pop songs of 2019' list wub.gif

QUOTE
It’s impressive that Ariana Grande managed to deliver Sweetener and thank u, next within six months of each other. Add to that everything she went through in that time and the fact that those quickly-released, trauma-borne records included songs like “ghostin’,” and the whole thing begins to seem vaguely impossible. “ghostin’”s glossy synths and reverb-heavy vocals point to a kind of coldness, but in reality it's the most empathic song Grande has ever made. Like an inversion of “thank u, next’”s sunny empowerment talk, “ghostin’” finds Grande at a loss for how to keep going, haunted by her love for an ex. “I know that it breaks your heart when I cry again,” goes the song’s unusually understated chorus, an astonishingly vulnerable sentiment that, even after thank u, next’s many beautifully coined lyrics about sadness, hits hard.

#2 on British GQ's list of best 2019 albums!

QUOTE
In 2018, Sweetener showed Ariana Grande was more than just the queen of stadium pop: a lo-fi R&B record filled with Atlanta’s finest talents, it suffered, perhaps, from too many cooks. Then, barely six months later, following a string of major singles, Grande’s Thank U, Next proved she was one of the most confident songstresses out there today. Low in conspicuous collabs, it achieves what every year-defining album should set out to do: as a whole it has timeless listenability, yet it is filled with tracks that became part of 2019’s zeitgeist. An album that references Nineties R&B as much as it does Rodgers and Hart, it feels like the final stage of what Grande has always wanted to do: it's sexy but vulnerable, introverted but powerful.

"introverted but powerful" is a good description - both factors made it a very appealing album to me.

There seems to be a rumour going around that Ari will (finally) be performing at the GRAMMYs! Line up is expected at some time today. Fingers crossed!

I don't think she's performed since 2015 where she performed 'Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart'!

Posted by: Jade 8th January 2020, 10:32 AM

Keeping EVERYTHING crossed for this to be true! I was watching her 'God is a woman' VMAs live performance again the other day, ready for more <3

Posted by: Juliano 8th January 2020, 05:34 PM

Oooo! I wonder what she would sing?

Pleasebetruepleasebetruepleasebetrue!!

Posted by: Jade 8th January 2020, 06:06 PM

I feel like the obvious answer would be 'thank u, next', '7 rings' or a mash-up of the two, but 'Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart' was a pretty inspired choice last time as a song that wasn't even a single, so I'd be here for something more inspired again like 'imagine' or 'in my head'!

Lizzo is rumoured too so I'm sure 'Good As Hell (Remix)' would be a must if both are confirmed

Posted by: Jordan Lee 8th January 2020, 07:12 PM

7 rings in full as a performance. TUN would be a moment but it’s not nominated. I dunno though she could perform literally anything!

I’d love a ghostin performance but I know that’s a tad unlikely for a TV slot like The Grammys but I think the impact would be huge.

Posted by: Jade 8th January 2020, 11:14 PM

A 'ghostin' performance is truly at the top of my wish-list but she seems to be against performing it, as seen on the Sweetener World Tour. In fact I remember reading before that she had to be persuaded to keep it on the album. The subject matter must be so hard to delve into which is understandable. A one-off performance would be perfection though.

I'm getting so impatient about more announcements haha. So far it's Billie, Lizzo + Gwen Stefani. C'mon Ari!!

Posted by: Jonjo 8th January 2020, 11:29 PM

Ooft. Those were 3 names that were in the list of the rumoured performances! I'm quite confident about it now. Especially as Gwen is such a random choice rn, no? laugh.gif

We shall see biggrin.gif

*gets trolled and she isn't performing*

Ahhhhh I'm so excited for her performance wub.gif she was the creative mind behind the last supper GIAW performance so I hope she pulls off something even a fraction as impressive as that again. Her chance of winning will definitely improve now. I wonder if she'll be performing at the BRITs too?

Posted by: Jordan Lee 11th January 2020, 09:12 PM

I hope we get a BRITs slot!

It’d be her first performance there but also it’ll be at least 2022 if we don’t get one this year bc after awards season I think she’s gonna go a bit incognito.

Posted by: Jade 12th January 2020, 01:14 PM

I'm very satisfied with a Grammys performance but yes a BRITs performing debut as well would be the icing on the cake, fingers crossed!

Also...

Incredible, what an era for her heart.gif just a month now until the album turns one year old!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 14th January 2020, 06:20 PM

It’s still so surreal to me how strong this album is considering just how quick it was recorded!

The worst time she was going through but creatively she was at her peak.

Can’t believe the album is very nearly a year old! I’ll be listening to the album as a whole again at some point this week but I’ll definitely listen to it as a whole on its first birthday heart.gif

It’s looking more likely Billie has it but at the same time for the last four years the winner of international female hasn’t performed at the show (or even attended actually in some cases laugh.gif ).

Ariana would be such a good signing if they get her though. She’d easily be amongst the most if not the most talked about performer of the night and she’d literally own the red carpet too. It would such a nice way of signing off / going on break to have her final high profile performance for a time to be in the UK. I’d literally take a performance from her over her winning the award since she’s already won it before wub.gif

We probably already knew this.

But it’s basically the end of the era tonight with the GRAMMYs performance.

Which also sort of confirms she isn’t gonna be attending or performing at The BRITs.

Hope she smashes her performance tonight though and enjoys her well overdue time away from promoting / releasing music.

happy birthday thank u next 🤍
making this project with so many dear friends quite literally saved my life and gave me the courage to be vulnerable and be honest with people. thank u for making me feel heard, safe and incredibly human. it is nice (and so healing) to know that i don’t have to hide behind a weird, polished pop star facade and that i’m able to connect with so many people over my truths and pain. i know that should have clicked for me sooner but it didn’t and i want to thank u for showing me first hand that it is okay. all of it.
i have been writing and creating a lot lately and it feels nice. i am in no rush to pop anything out of the oven yet !!
but i do look forward to this new chapter and sharing more stories / life with u. smile.gif
sending a tremendous, warm hug.

Powerful words from her there - 'thank u, next' easily feels like her most personal album. I'll never forget hearing the emotional sucker punch of 'ghostin' for the first time while I was walking to work last year. My opinions on the record have slightly shifted since it first came out - this is what my ranking of all the tracks would look like now:

01. 7 rings
02. ghostin
03. break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored
04. NASA
05. bad idea
06. in my head
07. thank u, next
08. imagine
09. bloodline
10. fake smile
11. needy
12. make up

'bloodline' peaked quite early for me while 'bad idea', 'in my head' and 'imagine' soon emerged as growers.

Will definitely be listening to this tomorrow. wub.gif

2. bloodline
3. fake smile
4. thank u, next
5. 7 rings
6. imagine
7. NASA
8. needy
9. in my head
10. make up
11. break up with ur gf i’m bored
12. bad idea

I’m also listening to this tomorrow wub.gif doesn’t feel like it’s one year old yet.

I never quite know if I prefer thank u, next or 7 rings they’re still pretty level and there’s different things I like about both. 7 rings was more instant but thank u, next (the song) grew and hit me out of nowhere tbh. At the time of release I remember thinking “this is her first US #1 and first UK number one since 2014 over everything on sweetener laugh.gif

Tbh the rankings from 1-10 are all tracks I love and even break up with ur gf is tolerable it was just a bit of a meh single when there’s so many vocal highlights on the album (and it’s the most similar to what was released as singles too).

I'm still obsessed with NASA, but it could just be me enjoying my own company. laugh.gif

It also was robbed of great chart position if it wasn't for the 3-track rule. dry.gif

'NASA' really is incredible, an ultimate highlight from tour was the crowd chanting 'N-A-S-A' back at Ariana each time!! Chills wub.gif

A year since the official top 10 domination *.* (thanks to Gezza in the UK Chart forum!)

I just listened to this in full again because there is f all on TV!!

needy sounded amazing like the best I’ve heard it tbh. I cast aside a bit I think but I really LOVE IT now.

in my head is another one what’s gotten better and better for me too.

Such a strong album and I love the no features.

It’s crazy to think this album was recorded in such a short space of time. Some Artists spend years making albums what aren’t even a fraction as good as this. It’s one good thing to come out of 2018 being such a naff year for her personally we got THIS album. Had things went well for her personally who knows what might’ve happened. It’s one of those weird things where we as fans got something good from something not so good if that makes sense.

I also seen this is still inside the UK Top 100 too and it’s never left that since it’s release smile.gif

Posted by: Jade 3rd April 2020, 10:54 PM

Yes I agree that 'in my head' just gets better and better wub.gif I wish she performed that live on tour rather than just leaving it as an interlude!

I haven't checked the album's chart progress in a little while so thanks for that - hope it continues to stick around in the top 100 for a while heart.gif

Posted by: Jordan Lee 4th April 2020, 01:10 AM

I keep thinking that had this been like a re release of sweetener and it counted to the overall sales of that album we’d probably have had a chart run like Duas debut what’s top 20 this week and is almost always in the top 40.

But with sales of Arianas albums all being split then having singles what aren’t on albums it explains why the album isn’t still in the higher ranks but it’s still done great. I’m hopeful it’ll cling on in the albums mainly as there’s not much else out for a few weeks and she’ll get those streams too. It’s currently on its 60th week in the top 100 and only Dangerous Woman managed more consecutive weeks from its debut. Sweetener dropped out after week 43 then re entered so this had greater staying power.

So far it’s had
3x weeks at #1
12x weeks top 10
20x weeks top 20
38x weeks top 40
58x weeks top 75
60x weeks top 100

(It’s also went 84-76-71) so two weeks in a row now it’s climbed smile.gif

I really wish we got some more singles from this though. ghostin especially I feel missed out but also bloodline too. Tbh I could make cases for every song on this to some extent getting a push even bad idea what isn’t my favourite but I’d definitely imagine that slaying as it’s every other person’s favourite album track from this laugh.gif

Posted by: Jordan Lee 24th April 2020, 07:33 PM

Weeks in top 100 update.

With 63 weeks in the UK top 100 albums this is now her third longest charter.

It’s overtaken sweetener which spent 62 weeks.

Posted by: Jade 5th July 2020, 01:45 PM

'bad idea' is definitely in my top 3 'thank u, next' album tracks alongside 'ghostin' and 'NASA'. Forever salty about the short singles campaign x

Posted by: Jonjo 5th July 2020, 01:54 PM

Considerate Queen!!!

'Bad Idea' is incredible. So, SO good and would definitely have worked as a single!

Posted by: JulianNial 5th July 2020, 10:12 PM

Is that shade?

If it is then... Does anyone else find it weird how much she shades her own music SO much?

She also shaded 'NASA'.

She wanted 'in my head' and nothing else and we all know it wouldn't have worked well.

'bloodline' would be the only other option and even then the clear message to Pete would have been plastered all over the media, so maybe they were right to move on when they did.

...but all for 'BOYFRIEND'. No honey.

Posted by: Jade 5th July 2020, 10:22 PM

I think that tweet was made up for a laugh (that user seems to be a 'bad idea' stan judging by their username laugh.gif) but yeah Ariana has some seriously interesting opinions on her own music, you're right. The worst one was her calling 'Touch It' boring sleep.gif

I do like 'boyfriend' but definitely would've preferred a longer 'thank u, next' campaign over it!

Boyfriend is so slept on this forum! </3

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 6th July 2020, 12:27 AM

I think if boyfriend had actually been on the album it could’ve been better received same as Don’t Call Me Angel actually. They’re not like a million miles away from the sound of that era in production but for me I think bloodline would’ve worked better as the third single and then ghostin to close the era.

I think the thank u, next era though was one where pretty much everything on the album could’ve been a hit bar maybes make up. She was just that star in that era everything she touched turned to gold and she had hype, massive streams, acclaim and paid for sales on her side. The campaign could’ve been stretched out but it’s still charting now so we did good heart.gif

Its bizarre why they never pushed ‘needy’. It was basically waiting to be a cute top 10.

And it already made Top 5 in Ireland, Top 10 in the UK, Malaysia and Singapore and Top 20 in the US, Canada, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, New Zealand and Portugal.

So they even could have thrown out a pretty and low budget music video, performed it live a couple of times and called it a single. Knowing Ari she probably finds it too boring. heehee.gif

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 6th July 2020, 10:25 AM

I’m a bit meh that break up with your gf was the third single even though it was a #1 laugh.gif

ghostin I think could’ve really pushed album sales up if that was pushed but I can totally see why Ari might not have wanted it to be a single.

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 12th July 2020, 01:30 AM

This is still inside the UK top 100 at #89.

74 weeks inside the top 100 now. It’s never dropped out yet since it’s initial release.

That’s a BIG discount! I wonder if that’ll affect it on the charts we could see quite a big boost if that’s a nationwide deal.

There’s some decent deals in there atm! Also picked up Billie’s vinyl which was also £12.99 and almost bought Tove’s Sunshine Kitty!

Posted by: JulianNial 18th February 2021, 08:13 PM

We could have had 3 more singles from this album EASY, I was hoping it would have been her 'Teenage Dream' spitting out hit single after hit single (mind you I thought that about Dangerous Woman) potentially equaling the record for most #1s from one album; 'thank u , next' > '7 rings' > 'buwyg,ib' > 'bloodline' > 'NASA' > 'bad idea' might just have been the best singles run in history.

Hope you're feeling better now!

I have similar memories but replace Uni (graduated in 2018, I associate that time with 'sweetener') with work, can vividly remember putting it on for the first time during a walk and immediately obsessing over 'NASA', 'bloodline' and 'ghostin'! I ended up cooling off 'bloodline' a bit over time - with 'bad idea' and 'in my head' emerging as growers, plus 'imagine' to a lesser extent. What an era!

I’ve always been a massive sweetener stan but I think this might now be rivalling that for my favourite album of hers!

It was pretty much always my second favourite from her but it’s the one I’m going back to the most now of all her studio albums and I don’t think there’s a bad track on it either! Even bad idea what I wasn’t ever keen on really has now grown and I can appreciate it more (it’s being used a lot on my Twitter feed on fancam like videos but it’s like an 80s sounding version what’s being used) but yeah this is becoming a real favourite for me now.

It’s here!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

This album though! It’s so close to overtaking. I think the fact it has no features really helps too like we were used to having a lot of features on her albums up until this and then this showed she’s a star all on her own and can carry a whole era by just her and her vocals and presence. Posted by: Liam.k. 10th February 2023, 07:59 AM

It's a really strong album - think I'm overdue a relisten tbh - but I just wish she did more with the era. At that point, Ariana would have been one of the few artists that would get streaming support from a post-album single, even if she had to release a new version. Any one of 'NASA', 'bloodline' or 'bad Idea' would have been great choices. I've never been able to settle with the idea that the album should be the final part of an era, aside from the tour.

'ghostin' has to be my favourite on the album and up there with the best songs Ariana has ever done. Gets me every time!

Don't even get me started. It was such a huge album yet It could have touched much higher heights, having 'Bad Idea' as a spring single and 'Bloodline' as a Summer single would have seen the album multi-Platinum and two of the best selling singles of her career. I'm sure of it.
