1970s Top 40 Rate Number 6s Here we go again. We've done the 80s where A-Ha's Take On Me was declared the Ultimate 80s Top 40 hit. Now we move on to the 70s - a decade which, arguably, saw the most eclectic range of musical styles gracing the charts. The 70s had it all - glam, disco, punk, new wave, country, funk, rock, pop, soul, electric, novelty, MOR, eurotrash and future Yewtree disgraced stars. Hopefully, you should know the drill by now, but if not - Below is a chronological list of all the singles which peaked at No.6 in the UK during the 1970s. Rate your faves, and the winner will go through to the final Ultimate Top 40 (where it will join the best No.1, No.2 etc). Mary Hopkin - Temma Harbour Pipkins - Gimme Dat Ding Stevie Wonder - Never Had A Dream Come True Supremes - Up The Ladder To The Roof Ray Stevens - Everything Is Beautiful Cliff Richard - Goodbye Sam, Hello Samantha Fair Weather - Natural Sinner Hot Chocolate - Love Is Life Carpenters - (They Long To Be) Close To You Diana Ross - Ain't No Mountain High Enough Jimmy Ruffin - It's Wonderful (To Be Loved By You) Elvis Presley - There Goes My Everything Greyhound - Black And White New World - Tom-Tom Turnaround Carole King - It's Too Late Marmalade - Cousin Norman Shirley Bassey - For All We Know Fortunes - Freedom Come Freedom Go Joan Baez - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down Olivia Newton John - Banks Of The Ohio Elvis Presley - I Just Can't Help Believing Faces - Stay With Me Tom Jones - The Young New Mexican Puppeteer Jo Jo Gunne - Run Run Run Marmalade - Radancer Wizzard - Ball Park Incident Electric Light Orchestra - Roll Over Beethoven Thin Lizzy - Whiskey In The Jar Alice Cooper - Hello Hurray Roberta Flack - Killing Me Softly With His Song Geordie - All Because Of You Rod Stewart - Oh! I actually want to rate them all. This is impossible for me
First sweep and I was REALLY tough got me down to 50. Next sweep 37 vital tracks. Doh! So - I voted for Imagine in the 80's, so that's out. There's a lot of ELO hits that peaked at 6, so chuck a couple out. 2 Manfred's so out goes one of em. No room for fab cheese so out goes Starship Troopers +30 Abba - S.O.S +29 Hot Chocolate - Love Is Life +28 Diana Ross - Ain't No Mountain High Enough +27 Carole King - It's Too Late +26 Greyhound - Black And White +25 Carpenters - (They Long To Be) Close To You +24 Gary Puckett & The Union Gap - Young Girl +23 Electric Light Orchestra - Mr Blue Sky +22 Ray Stevens - Everything Is Beautiful +21 Mary Hopkin - Temma Harbour +20 Electric Light Orchestra - Sweet Talkin' Woman +19 10CC - I'm Mandy Fly Me +18 Yvonne Elliman - Love Me +17 Wings - Listen To What The Man Said +16 Joan Baez - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down +15 Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road +14 Fleetwood Mac - Tusk +13 Jo Jo Gunne - Run Run Run +12 Hues Corporation - Rock The Boat +11 New World - Tom-Tom Turnaround +10 Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded By The Light +9 Specials - Gangsters +8 Four Seasons - Who Loves You +7 Exile - Kiss You All Over +6 Beach Boys - Lady Lynda +5 Kate Bush - The Man With The Child In His Eyes +4 Boney M - Daddy Cool +3 Rah Band - The Crunch +2 Wizzard - Rock N' Roll Winter (Looney's Tune) +1 Billy Swan - I Can Help |
