#40. I Feel Something In The Air | Avg.5.071

Highest Scores: 7: (ready for it), Lowest Scores: 3: (Mullo)

All of the tracks in this selection are minor hits for Cher & our first to drop is one of her earliest numbers 'I Feel Something In The Air'[, written & produced by her then husband Sonny Bono & released in 1966 as the 2nd single from her 3rd album self-titled album 'Cher'. The song became a minor hit upon release by peaking at #43 on the UK charts, but failed to reach the U.S. charts. In some countries the song was also known as "Magic in the Air". Definitely one of Cher's most forgotten tracks & not surprising it finished bottom of the pile here, not one of her most interesting numbers, but it does have a nice wall of sound arrangement to it. Other than that not something I ever return to.

#39. Oh No Not My Baby | Avg.5.466

Highest Scores: 8: (ready for it, Josh), Lowest Scores: 3: (gog lad84)

At #39 is one of Cher's many covers "Oh No Not My Baby", originally sung by Maxine Brown in 1964 & covered more famously by Rod Stewart in 1973. Cher's version was released in December 1992 as the lead single from her Greatest Hits: 1965-1992 compilation album. The song became a moderate International hit by reaching top 20 peaks in Switzerland & Poland & top 40 peaks in Iceland, Austria, UK & Spain. This is a really decent tune where Cher brings her usual charm & earnest vocals to it. Maybe if this had a music video then it could have definitely performed better & be more well known instead of being very lost in amongst her most flashy numbers.

#38. Not Enough Love in the World | Avg.5.678

Highest Scores: 7: (ready for it, Josh), Lowest Scores: 5.5/5: (Nina West, vibe, Feel The Fever, Lukuzz, gog lad84, Euphorique, Tombo)

At #38 another Cher 90's cover drops "Not Enough Love in the World", originally sung by Don Henley back in 1985. Cher's version featured on her 21st studio album "It's A Man's World", where it was released as the 3rd European single in April 1996 & peaked at #31 on the UK charts & therefore not matching the success of the first 2 singles (both of which reached the top 20). Musically very close to the original version, yet Cher's vocals sit more comfortably than his. Again I think this is another case of if this had a music video, then it may have performed better.
However its a nice little track, but there were better tracks on the album that could have been singles instead of this namely "The Shape of Things to Come" & "It's A Man's Man's World", both of which are brilliantl.

#37. Many Rivers to Cross | Avg.5.75

Highest Scores: 8: (ready for it, George.keh), Lowest Scores: 4: (Mullo, gog lad84)

At #37 is the 3rd cover in a row; Many Rivers To Cross, the 2nd of her 3 Greatest Hits singles to drop in this bunch. Released in January 1993 as the final single & peaked at #37 on the UK charts (quite fitting given its position here). The song has been covered many times throughout the decades firstly by Jimmy Cliff, UB40, & most recently by Annie Lennox in 2008. Cher's version was a live recording & has a great sound quality as her vocals really pop in this little number where husky tones really does the song justice. Not really a standout, but its okay enough.

#36. Could've Been You | Avg.5.766

Highest Scores: 8: (Josh), Lowest Scores: 4: (gog lad84, Tombo)

At #36 is Cher's version of 'Could've Been You", originally by Bob Halligan in 1991, but his version didn't see any success until Cher covered it in the same year for her "Love Hurts" album where it was released as the 4th single exclusively for the European market where it managed to reach top 40 peaks in the UK & Poland as well as making a minor dent on the German charts in February 1992. Now this is a really strong track where Cher really gets to show of some great vocals set against some fantastic pop/rock production that's very in your face. This really deserved to be bigger.

Cher deserved a lot of higher peaks to be fair she's such an icon! wub.gif

#31-#40 will be posted in 5's, #30-#21 will be posted in 3's & 4's, then the top 20 will in single topics.

A little clue for one of the songs that will drop next, 1 of them will be a chart topper, but which one?, out of the songs here there's 6 possible choices (UK & USA #1's).

I'm surprised that I have the highest scores for most of those.

So that's between

1. Gypsies, tramps and thieves
2. Half breed
3. Dark lady
4. Shoop, shoop song
5. Love can build a bridge
6. Believe

I'm betting that it's Love can build a bridge.

Results are pretty fair so far.

Loneliness is a cloak you wear

#35. Whenever You're Near | Avg.5.785

Highest Scores: 8: (ready for it, Josh), Lowest Scores: 4.5/4: (Mullo, Spiceboy, Lukuzz)

At #35 is the last of the Greatest Hits album singles; "Whenever You're Near", which was one of three songs recorded exclusively for Cher's first European compilation, Greatest Hits: 1965-1992. Released in February 1993 as the album's 2nd single & peaked at a mere #72, which makes this the smallest hit out of the 3, yet ranked higher than those 2 on here (interesting). This is yet another one of those cases in which a great song getting criminally ignored, in fact all 3 of the 'GH' singles deserved better & should have had music videos, which really could have got them more exposure. Cher just sounds fantastic on this heavier rock number with some excellent guitars that just lets rip towards the end. So yeah not much else to say about this, just a pretty decent tune.

#34. Sunny | Avg.5.964

Highest Scores: 7.5/7: (ready for it, Josh, George.keh, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 3: (Mullo)

At #34 we go back to the 60's with Cher's cover of "Sunny", which was originally sung by Bobby Hebb in 1966 (the same year Cher released her version), but the best known cover version of this song is probably Boney M's version in 1976. Cher recorded the song for her self-titled 3rd studio album in 1966 and is considered a tribute to her then husband Sonny Bono. The song was released in Europe & Asia only where it reached top 10 in several countries including Netherlands & Sweden, in the UK it became her 4th song to chart, peaking at #32 & she wouldn't have another chart entry over there until 1971. Cher's take on this song is rather interesting, completely different to the Euro-Disco sound of the Boney M version, while here its more subdued, which brings a certain sadness to it, especially in the way she sings it with some lovely arrangements going on in the production that lends a certain maturity to the whole thing & especially impressive for Cher to display this at such a young age with a bright future ahead of her.

#33. All I Really Want To Do | Avg.5.966

Highest Scores: 8: (George.keh), Lowest Scores: 4.5/4: (Mullo, Lukuzz, Tombo)

At #33 is Cher's very first ever single "All I Really Want To Do". Released in May 1965 & taken from her debut album of the same name. The song was originally sung by Bob Dylan in 1964. Cher got the idea to cover the song after hearing The Byrds perform it during their pre-fame residency at Ciro's nightclub on the Sunset Strip in March 1965. This caused a minor controversy when it was alleged by the Byrds and their management that Cher and her husband, Sonny Bono, had taped one of the Byrds' appearances at Ciro's without permission, in order to utilize some of the band's material for their own releases. Both Cher & The Byrds versions of the song became involved in a chart battle, when both versions entered the US charts the same week. However Cher's cover was the more successful by reaching #15 on the US charts, while The Byrds version faltered at #40. However in the UK their version faired even better by reaching #4, while Cher's reached #9.

An interesting starting point with her un-even mixtures of folk-rock & pop, wildly different to the direction Cher would later take. This however feels like more of an extension of her work with Sonny, rather than something that's truly her own (thankfully that would come much later on), hell she even made several performances with the man himself. As this stands this is a fine little effort with its Phil Spector-ish production that feels very of its time, but thankfully much better material would be on the horizon.

#32. The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore | Avg.6.142

Highest Scores: 8: (Spiceboy), Lowest Scores: 5: (Mullo, vibe, Feel The Fever, Lukuzz, Tombo)

At #32 we head back into the 90's now with Cher's version of the Frankie Vali track that became more famous by The Walker Brothers; "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore". Released ib August 1996 as the 4th European single from her 21st studio album It's A Man's World & went onto peak at #26 on the UK charts, becoming the album's 4th top 40 hit. Whilst this doesn't stray too away from the original versions, her vocal range, set alongside the second verse backing vocals turns it into a nice warm sound to it. Simply stunning.

#31. Love Can Build A Bridge (ft Chrissie Hynde, Neneh Cherry with Eric Clapton) | Avg.6.538

Highest Scores: 10: (gog lad84), Lowest Scores: 3: (Mullo)

At #31 is the first of Cher's #1 to drop; "Love Can Build a Bridge", which features singers Chrissie Hynde & Neneh Cherry, as well as Eric Clapton on guitars. The song was chosen as the official Comic Relief single for 1995 & would reach the top of the UK charts for one week & would go onto sell over 200,000 copies for charity. This would be the 2nd #1 for both Cher & Chtissie Hynde and the only UK number 1 single for either Neneh Cherry or Eric Clapton. I would say that its a big shock for one of Cher's chart toppers to drop out this early, but not so much in this case, as this probably stands as her one of her more forgotten hits, despite being such a big hit. Always remember my music teacher would play this song constantly in school & its a nice gentle heart warming little number with great vocals by all 3 female artists & it was good for its time. Not something I go back to anymore, (hell its not even on Spotify). it did what it says on the tin & did raise money for an important cause.

Some fools rave of happiness, of blissfulness, togetherness

#30. SOS | Avg.6.833

Highest Scores: 10: (Tombo), Lowest Scores: 1: (Spiceboy)

At #30 we have the first of 2 Cher ABBA covers in this selection: "SOS". Released in August 2018 as the 2nd single from her 2018 album Dancing Queen & received decent reviews, & upon release it managed to chart at #56 in Scotland & chart on the UK Sales chart with a peak of #78. Like all of Cher's ABBA covered tracks on the album, she does them justice. In this case she amps the beat up slightly, more so than the original version & there's the return of the famous vocoder (although ever so slightly) which gives this that kinda karaoke feel, but the distant fading pianos give it that extra boost, giving it a somewhat quite haunting feel to it.

#29. You Wouldn't Know Love | Avg.6.833

Highest Scores: 10: (Josh, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 3: (gog lad84)

At #29 is "You Wouldn't Know Love", which scored the same as 'SOS', but placed higher due to it having more high scores. The song was written by Michael Bolton & Diane Warren & appearing contemporaneously in 1989 on Bolton's Soul Provider album and Cher's Heart of Stone album. It was only released as a single in Europe & Australia, as the 4th & final single from her 19th studio album & achieved minor success by peaking at #55 in the UK, while faring better in Ireland with a #29 peak. The opening riff of the song is inspired by Fleetwood Mac's "Seven Wonders" from 1987. Now this is a true fantastic hidden gem in Cher's glorious discography, this hard rock number really keeps the momentum going throughout & her vocals are very top notch on this as she belts out the chorus against some cool guitar riffs. Cher's firmly on top form here.

#28. Love Hurts | Avg.6.9

Highest Scores: 8: (Simon, vibe, Feel The Fever, Liam, Josh), Lowest Scores: 5: (Euphorique)

At #28 is "Love Hurts", which is a song that was first recorded by The Everly Brothers, then made more famous by other acts such as Jim Capaldi & Nazareth in the 1970's. Cher actually recorded this song twice, her first version back in 1975 for her 12th album Stars, but did not release this version as a single. Then recorded a second version in 1991 for her album of the same name & released it as the 3rd single in December 1991, where it peaked at #43 in the UK, while faring much better in Denmark & Poland, where it peaked at #8 & #21 respectively. Not really familiar with the other versions of this song, but Cher really sells it, although do find this a rather unremarkable 80's power ballad, which funnily enough came out in the 90's (no wonder this faltered), its quite generic & only somewhat saved by Cher's charisma.

#27. Fernando (ft Andy Garcia) | Avg.7.133

Highest Scores: 10: (Simon, George.keh), Lowest Scores: 2: (Spiceboy)

At #27 we have another Cher/ABBA cover track "Fernando", which features actor/co-star Andy Garcia on background vocals. The song featured on both the Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again movie soundtrack (which Cher also starred in) & her 2018 ABBA tribute album Dancing Queen (the latter of which was solo without background vocals). Released in June 2018 as the lead single & managed to experience some success by reaching top 30 peaks in Hungary & Scotland, as well as charting on the US Adult Contemporay charts, as well as making a small dent on the UK singles chart (her first entry in 5 years). Cher does a really good version of this song that keeps the nice warm & yet somber feel of the original, while not straying too far away & the sound of which really suits her vocals & bring a nice elegance to an already very well known track.

Posted by: vibe 7th September 2020, 06:59 PM

Some of my faves are out now

Love Hurts and LCBAB are way too low.

Fernando is also my fav of her Abba covers.

Who knew Cher did this amount of covers ? She has more than Westlife !

#26. I Hope You Find It | Avg.7.166

Highest Scores: 10: (Spiceboy, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 5: (vibe, Feel The Fever, Euphorique)

At #26 is Cher covering Miley Cyrus with "I Hope You Find It", released in October 2013 as the 2nd single from her 25th studio album Closer To The Truth . Upon release it gained favourable reviews & became a success in the UK it became her biggest radio hit of the 21st century & thanks to a well received performance on X-Factor it managed to peak at #25 , becoming her first top 40 hit since 2001, as well as making this her 27th top 40 hit there. Elsewhere it also managed top 40 peaks in Scotland, Switzerland & Ireland, as well as top 50 peaks in Austria & Germany. Cher's rendition of this is prominently a country pop ballad & her husky tones & maturity really brings some gravitas to something to can otherwise sound very cliche & syrupy. Plus its radio friendly nature made it an obvious yet instant standout on her comeback album.

#25. We All Sleep Alone | Avg.7.2

Highest Scores: 10: (ready for it, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 5: (vibe, Feel The Fever, gog lad84, Liam)

At #25 is "We All Sleep Alone", released in January 1988 as the 2nd single from her 18th studio album Cher (her 2nd self-titled album). This song was written and produced by Desmond Child, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora (with whom Cher would later be romantically involved). Upon release the song became a success on the US Billboard Charts by reaching a #14 peak, as well as top 40 peaks in Poland, Canada & Spain. In the UK it couldn't quite match the success of the lead single by reaching a #47 peak. This is a cool 80's soft-rock anthem that's really moving & captures the sound of that era quite perfectly. Another great 80's comeback for Cher after being away from the music scene for several years due to her focus on her acting career.
One of her most underrated gems for sure.

#24. Dark Lady | Avg.7.3

Highest Scores: 10: (Spiceboy), Lowest Scores: 3: (gog lad84)

At #24 we lose one of Cher's most well known & biggest hits; "Dark Lady", released in February 1974 as the lead single from her 11th studio album of the same name & became her 3rd #1 hit in the USA, and would her last until "Believer" 25 years later. The song with some accuracy be described as a murder ballad, even though the narrator of its lyrics essentially commits a crime of passion. Elsewhere the song also became a success by topping the Canadian charts, & top 10 peaks in Quebec, South Africa, Danish, Zimbabwe, Norway & Sweden, top 20 peaks in New Zealand, Netherlands & Australia. In the UK it didn't fare quite so well by reaching a #36 peak & would be her final song of the 70's to chart there.

Cher can sing the most sing the most ridiculous songs with total sincerity, especially on this folksy little number that's about black magic/murder/infidelity. Totally ridiculous, but hell of a lot of fun as she really sells this story a highly enjoyable yarn that stands as one of her most interesting tracks of her 5 decade long career.

#23. Dead Ringer For Love (Ft Meatloaf) | Avg.7.3

Highest Scores: 10: (Nina West, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 4: (Liam)

At #23 is Cher's early foray into rock, "Dead Ringer For Love", which is a song by Meatloaf that features on his third studio album Dead Ringer & features Cher on backing vocals. The song was originally written by Jim Steinman, Tony Hendra and Sean Kelly (and sung by Michael Simmons) for the short-lived television comedy series, Delta House. Upon release the song became a big success on the UK charts by reaching a #5 peak, making this her first charting song there in 6 years & biggest hit in 10 years, going onto sell over 250,000 copies there & earning a Silver disc. There are not many singers that could go note for note with Cher or Meat Loaf, so the pairing of the two legendary voices culminated in a track for the ages. Fueled by both artists high energy performances & a fantastic production that would be a great indication of where Cher would take her sound to next.

#22. Bang, Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) | Avg.7.333

Highest Scores: 10: (Tombo), Lowest Scores: 5: (Euphorique)

At #22 we have the last of 60's Cher to feature here: "Bang, Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)", Released in 1966 as the 2nd single from her 2nd studio album The Sunny Side of Cher.
The song was written by her then husband Sonny Bono & became a huge success upon release by reaching #3 on the UK singles chart & #2 on the US charts (becoming her biggest hit of the decade in both countries). Elsewhere it also managed top 5 peaks in New Zealand, Ireland, Canada, Quebec & Japan, along with top 10/20 peaks everywhere else. The song has been covered many times throughout the years, perhaps most famously by Nancy Sinatra from the same decade also. In 1987 Cher would recorded a rock version of this track for her 1987 self-titled album with backing vocals by Jon Bon Jovi & Michael Bolton.

A firm early hint of Cher's talent as a solo singer which spins a tale of first love gone sour with dramatic arrangements, some beautiful flamenco guitars & weeping violins which really sets the tone for the melodrama that has that wonderful bluesy-soaked style to it.

#21. Save Up All Your Tears | Avg.7.4

Highest Scores: 11: (Feel The Fever), 10: (Simon, Spiceboy, Josh), Lowest Scores: 3: (gog lad84)

Missing the top 20 by the literal skin of its teeth is the fabulous "Save Up All Your Tears", released in October 1991 as the 2nd US & 3rd International single from her 20th studio album Love Hurts. The song of course like many others was a cover by Bonnie Tyler in 1988 but was never released as single, then covered again by other artists such as Robin Rock & Freda Payne. While Robin Beck was the only artist to make the song hit top 10 (in Switzerland & Germany), Cher's version did the best in UK & USA by reaching top 40 in both markets. Elsewhere it also managed a top 20 peak in Austria, while attaining top 40 peaks in Poland, Ireland & Canada.

Out of all the versions I've heard of this song, I'd definitely say that Cher's version is by far the best with its rocky piano start, before bursting into a stadium rock anthem where Cher's vocals just soars throughout that really shows off how great her vocal range really is, very powerful & stands as one of her strongest singles of her career.

The next song to drop will be another chart topper, but which one?,

there are 4 possible choices left.

Disappointed the brilliant save up all your tears missed out on the top 20, i love it and its by far my fave single from Cher.

#20. Half-Breed | Avg.7.433

Highest Scores: 10: (Spiceboy, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 4: (gog lad84)

Kicking off the top 20 in true style is another iconic chart-topper - "Half-Breed", released in July 1973 as the lead single from her 10th studio album of the same name. Lyrically, the song describes the life of a biracial girl from a white father and indigenous mother and it contains themes of racism and double standards. It was meant to be released in America only where it became her 2nd chart topper & gained a Gold certification for over 1 Million copies sold, but ended up getting an International release as-well where it also became a smash hit by topping the charts in Canada & New Zealand & top 10 peaks in Australia, Quebec, Israel & Sweden, top 20/30 peaks in Spain, Norway & Germany. However in the UK the song failed to make a dent on the charts, but still remains one of her best known songs of her career.

The song obviously plays on her exotic looks - half-Armenian, part-Cherokee, along with some frantic production & Cher's strong vocals really sells the songs message of racial intolerance, which makes this a fantastic slice of early 70's pop, with its pumping glam drums & theatrical disco strings, each of which makes the thing rather enjoyable.

Think Dead Ringer For Love should have been top 20

Half Breed is brilliant

#19. Heart of Stone | Avg.7.466

Highest Scores: 11: (Spiceboy), Lowest Scores: 5: (vibe, Feel The Fever, gog lad84)

At the #19 spot is the highest placed track on this countdown not to gain any 10's (but did manage a single score of 11) - "Heart of Stone", released in January 1990 as the 4th USA & 3rd European single taken from her 19th studio album of the same name, (which also makes this her first single of the 90's decade). The song was originally recorded by Bucks Fizz in 1988 & became their final single to chart at a mere #50. Cher had a lot more success with her version by reaching top 20 peaks in USA & Poland, as well as top 40 peaks in Ireland & Canada. In the UK it narrowly missed the top 40 by reaching a #43 peak, which is still higher than Bucks Fizz original version.

Slightly remixed for its single release & of course as always Cher delivers yet another cracking tune with top notch vocals which trumps the Bucks Fizz original by about a million miles. Cher really brings a more soulful depth to this number & remains one of her most finest moments to date.

#18. Woman's World | Avg.7.566

Highest Scores: 10: (Tombo), Lowest Scores: 4: (Simon)

At #18 is "Woman's World", released in June 2013 as the lead single from her 25th studio album Closer to the Truth, which would be her first studio album since 2001's Living Proof. While Cher was still in the process of finishing the album, snippets of the song surfaced online in late October 2012, and when a DJ played a demo of the song at a Michigan club, Cher revealed on her Twitter page that she was upset about the leak. Upon release the song received generally positive reviews & became a modest hit by reaching top 40 peaks in Switzerland & Belgium, while also charting in several other countries such as Austria, Germany, Australia, Italy & Venezuela. in the USA it didn't manage to enter the official top 100, but managed a #25 on the Bubbling under chart, but fared better on its other charts by becoming her 8th chart topper on the US Hot Dance charts & top 30 on the Adult Contemporary chart, making Cher one of the few artists to have appeared on that chart in every one of the last 6 six decades.

A very fun comeback single with this very in your face tune with its shouty lyrics & catchy repetitive lyrics that kinda lost its punch by the time it was finally released, have it not leaked several months prior, then this could have done much better. But as it is this tracks really plays to her strengths as a self-esteem icon and club staple, allowing her to sound contemporary while also paying tribute to her back discography. The song's crisp production with an element of camp, its just nice to have Cher back on the music scene again.

#17. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) | Avg.7.633

Highest Scores: 10: (George.keh, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 2: (Spiceboy)

At #17 we say goodbye to the last of the Cher ABBA covers - "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)", released in August 2018 as the lead single from her 26th studio album Dancing Queen. Upon release it received positive reviews & became quite successful by reaching top 5 on the US Dance Club Songs chart & hit top 40 peaks in Scotland, Spain, Belgium & Hungary.

Cher pioneered the use of autotune in music, and distinct use of it on this cover really works, making it feel more fun and more poignant when sung by a woman in her early 70s. A bang up job by the wonderful Cher as always & while this may never stand as one of her best, its still a decent effort.

Love Woman's World, great single from a great album.

Gimme Gimme Gimme is definitely one of the best of the ABBA covers

#16. You Haven't Seen The Last of Me | Avg.7.733

Highest Scores: 10: (Lukuzz, Liam, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 5: (gog lad84)

In this selection there's 2 songs in this post, given that they both scored the same average. Finishing in 16th place is "You Haven't Seen The Last of Me", released in November 2010, After a long time of hiatus in her acting career, Cher returned to the screen in Burlesque[/], as well as this being her first single release in 7 years. ,Upon its release, the single was well-received from most contemporary music critics, who praised Cher's comeback as well as the track's composition. It also garnered a Golden Globe award for 'Best Original Song' as well as receiving a Grammy nomination. In January 2011 the song managed to top the US Hot Dance Club chart, This made Cher the only act to have notched a number-one single on a Billboard chart in each of the last six decades.

This was one of the 2 wildcard entries that were requested for this rate & its done very well with not only a decent position, but a healthy average. This is a really nice piano driven torch song that simmers throughout by adding instruments and volume to Cher's powerful vocals which shows she still got some fantastic chops (its like she's never really been away at all) as well as showing us why she's had an amazing career that's lasted this long & even after 6 decades, Cher still has what it takes & just keeps delivering the goods.

#15. The Music's No Good Without You | Avg.7.733

Highest Scores: 11: (Euphorique), 10: (Qween), Lowest Scores: 4.5: (Nina West)

At #15 is "The Music's No Good Without You", released in November 2001 as the lead International single from her 24th studio album [i]Living Proof
& coming off the back of her mega successful Believe era, expectations were high. Upon release the song got mixed reviews, but became a success by reaching top 10 peaks in Italy, Canada, Romania, Poland, Portugal, Spain & UK, where it became her 13th top 10 hit & would be her last single to chart there until 2013. Elsewhere it managed top 20/40 peaks mostly everywhere else & therefore expanding Cher's chart success into five decades. In the USA the song would only be released as an exclusive club single in August 2002, & due to Cher being on tour at the time, the single had no promotion over there at all.

This is unfortunately not one of my favourite Cher numbers with way too much auto-tune for my liking that it makes her vocals barely recognizable, making it feel way too robotic, yeah I know the that was the whole point, but with this it just lacks that certain spark that Cher usually has with her more well-known or even in some cases lesser known numbers. Although I do like the electronic beats running throughout, but that's not enough to save this barely memorable mess. Despite being a top 10 hit, this feels rather forgotten by today's standards. I honestly feel that the lead US single 'ASFTL' would have been a far stronger International lead than this & if it had the attention this did, then could have easily fared better.

#14. Take Me Home | Avg.7.8

Highest Scores: 10: (Josh, George.keh, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 4: (gog lad84)

At #14 is Cher's brief foray into Disco music; "Take Me Home", released in January 1979 as the lead single from her 15th studio album of the same name, as well as being her first album on after signing to 'Casablanca Records'. The idea of Cher going into the Disco genre was advised by Neil Bogart after the commercial failures of her last 4 studio albums. Originally Cher wanted to record a Rock 'N' Roll tinged album after her new label signing, before being advised otherwise, she was reluctant at first, stating that she found the genre superficial. Upon release the song got positive reviews & became her biggest hit in 4 years by reaching a #8 peak on the US charts & went onto earn a Gold disc for sales of over a Million copies. This would be her last top 10 hit over there for 8 years. Elsewhere it also reached the top 10 in Canada, but wouldn't make much impact Internationally, charting only in Spain & New Zealand. In the UK the song didn't chart, but it did get covered by Sophie Ellis Bextor in 2001 , taking it to #2 on the UK charts.

I only became familiar with Cher's version of this track when Sophie Ellis Bextor's version came out & this was a fascinating surprise & glad Sophie's version wasn't just a carbon copy of this grand version, both of which are very different, almost like 2 separate songs (in my opinion). This was the other wildcard track that I added to this rate & honestly really glad its here, as not only has it done really well here, but its just a fantastic triumph, with a funky melody, lush arrangements & some stellar production in which Cher really sells the melancholy yearning & the slight sleaziness of its sexual lyrics. Its a shame that none of her other Disco tracks were half as good as this, well actually quite weak when compared to this brilliant tune. It just goes to show as to why her foray into this genre was as brief as it was, 2 studio albums in one year that felt very rushed & making it clear that her heart wasn't into this sound. But as this title track stands it makes for a very promising highlight in her already stellar discography.

The next to drop will be a 2nd single, but which one?

There's 4 possible choices: "Just Like Jesse James", "One By One", "Strong Enough" or "Song for the Lonely"

Posted by: Spiceboy 17th September 2020, 07:29 PM

I think it will be song for the lonely.

You Haven't seen the last of me is definitely in my Top 5 Cher songs of all time. Perfection.

The music's no good without you I never really gave much time to when it came out but its great.

Take Me Home is a classic too

#13. One By One | Avg.7.8 [more high scores]

Highest Scores: 10: (Nina West, Qween, Mullo), Lowest Scores: 3: (Tombo)

At #13 & coming quite as a shock; "One By One", this looked set for a top 10 placing, up until the final low score of 3 which caused this to dip quite a bit. Released in January 1996 as the 2nd European single from her 21st studio album It's A Man's World, while in the USA it was released at a slightly later date of June 1996 as the lead single there as 'WIM' wasn't given a release over there & was given a brand new remix for that market also. The song has been covered a few times over the years, where originally recorded by The Real People back in 1987, but was never used for their album, then covered again by Irish singer Johnny Logan in 1990. But neither of these versions are very well known & Cher's version to date remains the most successful & most well known. Upon release the song became a decent success by reaching top 10 peaks in Hungary & UK, as well as top 40 peaks in Canada, Iceland & Poland. In the USA it wasn't quite as successful by reaching a #52 peak, but was a big hit on Billboard's Adult Contemporary, Hot Dance Club Play and Hot Dance Singles Sales charts.

This was a well earned hit for Cher back in the mid 90's with its fantastic opening of ghostly guitars drift in as they blend with backing vocals then eventually some soft warm vocals by the diva herself. Then as the chorus kicks in, we get some great chugging rock guitars thrown in with some stunning verses set alongside some escalating backing vocals, before drifting off again, giving it an soulful dreamlike quality. A truly lovely song.

#12. Just Like Jesse James | Avg.8.066

Highest Scores: 10: (Simon, Spiceboy, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 5: (gog lad84)

At the #12 spot is a well known iconic number for Cher; "Just Like Jesse James", released in October 1989 as the 3rd US & 2nd European single from her 19th studio album Heart of Stone. The song's title is a reference to legendary Wild West bandit Jesse James. Upon release the song became a big hit by reaching top 10 peaks in Canada, USA & Ireland, while hitting top 20 peaks in Quebec, UK, Australia, New Zealand & Poland, then finally top 40 peaks in Belgium, Germany & Spain. Cher has stated during concert performances that she personally never much liked the song despite its successful chart performance.

Certainly one of Cher's more restrained numbers, especially during the late 80's, but that doesn't take any of its greatness away from it. An effective Country tinged power ballad that has some very well polished song-writing that recalls the days when Cher had great success in recording songs that told a story. By using the outlaw Jesse James as a simile for a rough relationship is quite genius & makes it a unique moment in her discography, its a shame that Cher doesn't like this song, as I personally love it, but at least she continues to perform it, as its a firm fan favourite & just an all round great song.

The next to drop will be a song that didn't make the UK top 10 (quite fitting), there's 4 possible choices, any guesses?

#11. Dov'e L'Amore | Avg.8.1

Highest Scores: 11: (gog lad84), 10: (ready for it, Lukuzz), Lowest Scores: 4: (Mullo)

Just outside the top 10 is the Latin flavoured "Dov'e L'Amore", which translates in English; "Where's the Love". Released in July 1999 as the 4th and final single from her 22nd studio album Believe. It has been noted that this is the only rack that deviates from the electronic dance music sound on the album. Upon release it earned decent reviews & became a success worldwide by hitting top 10 peaks in Spain, Finland, Greece, Czech Republic & Hungary, while reaching top 20 peaks in Italy, Belgium & Switzerland. In the UK it wasn't quite as successful as the previous singles by peaking just outside the top 20 at #21, which makes this her 25th top 40 hit there. Elsewhere the song managed top 40 peaks in Poland, Germany, Sweden, Austria & Quebec, then finally minor peaks everywhere else.

I never thought that this would manage to get this high, but its very decent scores speak for themselves. This probably stands as the album's most forgotten single, given that it didn't receive half as much attention as the other singles did & its quite a shame as this is a pretty solid track, while in its original album form its a very beautiful Latin tinged ballad that offered a very refreshing change of pace from its other album tracks which were more in the dance/electronica vibe. While in its new single mix, the track pops even more by adding more guitars & other instrumentals to the mix, along with some slick production & some top notch vocals, all of which makes this quite a bright spot in Cher's everlasting career, a lost gem perhaps.

Walking in Memphis
Believe
Strong Enough
All or Nothing

A fairly mixed top 10 which is nice, not really a surprise to see 3 of the Believe singles there (and Dov'e L'amore just missing out). Surprised to see The Music's No Good Without You that high, but very pleased. I think it's the perfect antidote to Believe - it's the afterparty, sultry and laid back. Also her head voice on One by One is sublime.

When hero's fall, in love or war they live forever

#10. Song for the Lonely | Avg.8.2

Highest Scores: 11: (Qween), 10: (Lukuzz, George.keh, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 7/7.5: (Nina West, Mullo, Simon, Feel The Fever, Spiceboy, Josh, Euphorique)

Kicking off the top 10 is Cher's last single of the 00's to feature here - "A Song For The Lonely", released in March 2002 as the lead US & 2nd international single from her 24th studio album
Living Proof. initially written as a love song, but after the September 11 attacks, Cher eventually saw it in a different way. Upon release the song was met with positive reviews, with music commentators complimenting its heartfelt lyrics and beat. But became a commercial disappointment by peaking at #85 on the US charts, making this her 32nd & final chart entry on the top 100 to date. However the song did attain better positions in other component charts, such as topping both the Dance/Electronic Singles Sales and the Dance Club Songs charts, as well as peaking within the top 20 on the Adult Contemporary chart & top 40 peaks on US Adult & Mainstream top 40.

This really deserved so much more than it got, such a shame this brilliant uplifting anthem flew under the radar upon its release, especially given the lead single 'TMNGWY' did so well in Europe, this could easily followed suit if given a chance. A bold yet heartfelt number that's about getting back up every time you are knocked down, a message that's achingly emotional and somber. Cher's vocals of course steals the show (as always) with its empowering production, energetic synths & pulsating beats, each of which makes for a perfect combination. Just an all-round amazing track. A firm lost classic.

#09. Gypsy's Tramps & Thieves | Avg.8.233

Highest Scores: 10: (Simon, Spiceboy, Liam, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 5: (Euphorique)

At #9 we say goodbye to 70's Cher with "Gypsy's Tramps & Thieves", released in September 1971 as the lead single from her 7th studio album Cher (eventually retitled after said hit Gypsy's Tramps & Thieves). The song was written by Bob Stone & produced by Snuff Garrett. Since Sonny Bono's first attempts at reviving Cher's recording career had been unsuccessful, Kapp Records recruited Garrett as her producer and he chose Stone to write a song specifically for Cher, in order to cater more to an adult audience. Upon release the song was met with appreciation for its lyrical themes & earned Cher her first Grammy nomination. The song became a smash hit by becoming her first #1 in the USA, her biggest hit in 4 years there, as well as topping the Canadian charts. Elsewhere it also found success by hitting top 5 peaks in New Zealand, Singapore, Ireland, Australia & UK. It became her biggest selling song worldwide at that point with 3 Million copies sold.

After ditching the folk-rock sound & shifted towards a more grand Vegas styled Pop, where these show-stopping numbers suited her voice much better & this is probably one of the best examples of that with its giant chorus tied to a fabulous example of the lost art of tale-telling song-writing & going through a range of emotions throughout such as anger, seductive, terrified and resigned, hell already showing off some fantastic acting chops. Never one to be pigeonholed, never settling into a style or sound for too long & this is a prime example of one of her many reinventions , proving that she's one of one the best innovators around. Just an all-round great track, not only one of her best, but certainly one of her most iconic.

#08. Love And Understanding | Avg.8.266

Highest Scores: 11: (Josh), 10: (Nina West, Mullo, Simon, Spiceboy), Lowest Scores: 5: (George.keh)

At #8 is the fantastic "Love And Understanding", released in May 1991 as the lead single from her 20th studio album Love Hurts, which would also mark her final studio album under the Geffen label as well as ditching the Rock sound for further releases after this era was done of course. Upon release the song received decent reviews & would become a substantial success by hitting top 10 peaks in Poland, Austria, Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands & UK, as well as top 20 peaks in Canada, Quebec, USA & Germany. Finally it managed top 40 peaks everywhere else, becoming one of her most successful hits of the decade.

An excellent tune, its catchy, upbeat with some slick production & well crafted vocals. Not surprising that this was the lead single & that Diane Warren was the writer behind this track with its socially conscious lyrics that feels very fitting now more than ever given these troubled times. Even now this song still holds up rather well. Even though the album it comes from may not be one of her best, feeling at times that it was made to simply fulfil her contract with the label, but that doesn't stop this from being a firm highlight. Should be more remembered.

#07. I Found Someone | Avg.8.433

Highest Scores: 11: (George.keh), 10: (Nina West, Qween, Lukuzz, Josh), Lowest Scores: 6.5/6: (gog lad84, Liam)

At #7 is the massive power ballad "I Found Someone", released in November 1987 as the lead single from her self-titled 18th studio album & became part of a much-heralded musical comeback at the height of her movie career, Thanks to its big budget music video which received heavy rotation on MTV, the song put Cher's signing career back on the map by reaching the top 10 in the USA (her first in 8 years there), as well as reaching #5 in the UK, making this her first solo song to chart there since 1974. Elsewhere it managed top 10 peaks in Iceland, Ireland, Australia & Israel, then top 20/40 peaks mostly everywhere else. Originally the song was sung by Laura Branigan back in 1986, but its Cher's version that became the most successful. This would also begin a three-album association with fellow singer Michael Bolton (who also wrote & produced this song) & other contributors, Diane Warren, Jon Bon Jovi & future boyfriend Richie Sambora, and their song-writing partner Desmond Child.

Now this is a prime example of a great comeback single, a big irresistible guitar-driven ballad with a rousing soaring chorus with some instantly killer hooks that builds towards the verses perfectly. Even though Laura's Branigan's version is also worthy, but its Cher’s version that obliterated the earlier version from the public memory. One of the best songs Cher has ever recorded that has well & truly stood the test of time.

#06. The Shoop. Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss) | Avg.8.633

Highest Scores: 11: (Tombo), 10: (Nina West, Mullo, Spiceboy, Josh), Lowest Scores: 6: (Simon, George.keh)

At #6 is yet another iconic number "The Shoop, Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)", released in November 1990 for the movie soundtrack Mermaids, in which she also starred in of course.
The song was originally sung by Merry Clayton in 1963, then again by Betty Everett a year later, but its Cher's version that's the most well known, especially in the UK where it became her first solo chart topper, her only previous #1 was 'i Got You Babe' in 1965 alongside her then husband Sonny. It topped the charts for 5 weeks, selling a total of 520,000 copies, making it one of the biggest-selling singles by a female artist in Britain in the 1990s. Elsewhere it also a massive success by topping the charts in Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Norway, Poland & Zimbabwe, as well as top 5/10 peaks in the rest of Europe, making this easily one of the biggest hits of her career. In the USA it didn't fare quite as well by reaching a #33 peak, making this her 19th top 40 hit there.
The success of the single in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe was reflected in its addition to Love Hurts, her subsequent album, as released in those parts of the world, Australia and New Zealand.

A true iconic belter of a track that fully deserved all the success it got, I always have fond memories of this as a kid, it was totally everywhere at the time & its one of those songs that you never get sick off. Cher's version improves on the original and is nicely sung with a good arrangement that suits her powerhouse vocals beautifully. Just an all round brilliant classic Cher tune that will always stand as one of her very best.

#05. Walking In Memphis | Avg.8.7

Highest Scores: 10: (Nina West, vibe, Spiceboy, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 5: (Simon)

At #5 & coming as quite a shock is Cher's version of "Walking In Memphis", which was originally recorded by Marc Cohn in 1991. It was then remade by Cher in October 1995 as the lead single from her 21st studio album It's A Man's World for the European market, not getting a US release. Cher's version managed to chart much higher than the original in the UK by reaching a #11 peak (her biggest hit in 4 years there), while elsewhere it had moderate success by hitting top 20 peaks in Sweden, Poland, Austria & Denmark, then lower & minor peaks in Netherlands, Canada, Germany & Australia. Despite being a comparative failure for Cher, the song was included in the set list for the singer's 1999–2000 Do You Believe? Tour, the first Cher tour subsequent to her recording of the song. In introducing the number, Cher would overstate how low the impact of her take on "Walking in Memphis" was, first citing Marc Cohn's original as "a huge hit", then her own version as "a huge bomb".

Probably seen as quite a big risk in covering a song that's so recent & fresh on the memory which is probably why this didn't get an American release. But the Marc Cohn original wasn't a particularly big hit here in the UK, however its still pretty well known & still gets decent radio play. Cher's version plays pretty faithful to the original, where the song builds up beautifully, and the light tinkling of piano at the start symbolises the rain that she sings about. Definitely a foot tapper for sure with some nice vocal stylings, which makes this a brilliant cover & one of her very best.

At the #4 spot is "All or Nothing", released in June 1999 as the 3rd International single from her 22nd studio album Believe & continued the Dance/Pop sound of the album's first 2 singles & became a moderate success upon release by reaching top 10 peaks in Finland, Hungary & Czech Republic, top 20 peaks in UK, Denmark & Netherlands, as well as top 40 peaks in Ireland, Belgium, New Zealand, France, Switzerland, Austria & Poland. In the USA it wasn't given a full scale release due to her previous single 'Strong Enough' flopped, but it did manage to chart to crack the top 40 on the US Hot Singles Sales & top the US Dance charts.

An amazing example of that 90's House sound that got completely overshadowed by that huge monster hit (the name of which escapes me), but in all honesty anything & everything that came after it was gonna forever be in its shadow. Plus this does have a very similar vibe to its lead single with its glossy production & packed with some cool thumping beats that fully embraces the disco/dance heartbreak mood & it does set itself apart from that said hit & becomes its own cool anthem. A firm standout on its parent album & yet another somewhat forgotten gem in her discography.

The Final 3:

If I Could Turn Back Time
Believe
Strong Enough

All or Nothing is just wub.gif I wish it would somehow become relevant and known.

Posted by: Lukuzz 27th September 2020, 10:32 AM

I found someone is definitely one of her best
Shoop Shoop is one I barely listen too a bit too cheesy.
Walking In Memphis I love one of the best covers out there
All Or Nothing is amazing one of them songs I didn't give much attention to at the time but it's aged great.

Would love Strong Enough to win but I think itll be out next

Obviously, they're great singles, but I'm a bit meh at the top 3. How could I Found Someone miss out? That's a travesty.

I'd say Believe probably deserves it purely because of what it achieved. That song will never die. But I can't listen to Turn Back Time anymore. It's just too overplayed. Not the song's fault, I know, but it's just tired sounding to me now.

But Strong Enough? As much of a bop as it is, that's not a better song than at least 20 other singles on the list.

One By One is one of her most underrated vocal performances. Ooft, has she ever sounded better?

Maybe we're just totally spoiled for choice with Cher, but that's one seriously packed singles run. Holy jesus.

#03. If I Could Turn Back Time | Avg.9.166

Highest Scores: 11: (Nina West), 10: (Qween, Mullo, Simon. Spiceboy, ready for it, Lukuzz, Josh, Tombo), Lowest Scores: 5: (Euphorique)

At #3 we have one of Cher's most iconic numbers "If I Could Turn Back Time", released in July 1989 as the lead single from her 19th studio album Heart of Stone. Initially Cher disliked the track, after listening to the demo tape which was sung by the song's writer Diane Warren, but subsequently changed her opinion after Warren convinced her to record it. Upon release the song became a major success around the globe & was seen as a major comeback for Cher in the late 1980s. It topped the charts in Australia & hit top 5 peaks in Canada, New Zealand, USA, & Netherlands, as well as top 10 peaks in Belgium, Ireland, UK & Quebec. Therefore cemented her singing career well into the 90's & early 00's with continued success.

One of Cher's well & truly most defining moments of her career, she took a huge risk by putting her highly successful movie career on hold to sign a new deal with Geffen records & return to the music business after a career of some very mixed success & a lot of her previous albums not making much impact. But like a true diva Cher defied all the odds & struck back to the forefront with this magnificent well crafted 80's power ballad with a rousing chorus & top notch production that makes this pretty climatic with massive drums & that amazing key change which only adds more & more to its brilliance. Everybody should by now know this incredible anthem, its something that's gonna last throughout the ages & will always be there. Great song all-round.

Believe VS Strong Enough

How have I only just discovered All or Nothing it’s amazing.

Posted by: jszmiles 28th September 2020, 11:59 PM

oh well I would put All Or Nothing at #2 even at #1 - because Believe is kinda overplayed. I never been a huge fan of Strong Enough though.

Believe is a winner, that's kinda obvious ;-)

If I Could Turn Back Time should have been in the final two.

Posted by: Qween 29th September 2020, 11:59 AM

I'd prefer Strong Enough which I think is a better pop song, but Believe is undeniable and realistically is like Waterloo for ABBA where it almost wins by default.

Since when is Waterloo ABBA’s win by default track? If anything it’s Dancing Queen (although tbf ABBA have that many definitive tracks there isn’t a definitive one 😂)

I'm kind of aghast that Strong Enough is top 2. I had no idea it was so loved. It's not it for me.

I'll happily sing along to it, but if someone who didn't know Cher asked me to recommend 20 songs to them, I wouldn't even remember to include it.

I'm rediscovering Love & Understanding all over again at the moment. It's just got that classic 80s sound to it. So, so good.

Posted by: Lukuzz 30th September 2020, 06:20 PM

Glad to see Strong Enough top 2, it's definitely my number 1 but Believe was an obvious number 1 from the start

At the runner up spot is..."Strong Enough", which means that the winner is....to be revealed in the next post. Released in February 1999 as the 2nd single from her 22nd studio album Believe. The song's composition and musical style is strongly reminiscent of 1970s disco music. The song received positive reviews from music critics, many calling it a highlight on the album. Upon release the song became a big International smash hit by topping the charts in Hungary & hit top 5 peaks in Belgium, France, Germany, Iceland, Austria, Spain, Denmark, Switzerland & UK, as well as top 10 peaks in Greece, New Zealand, Finland, Poland, Quebec & Italy. However in the USA it didn't receive much attention despite the previous single topping charts, with this only managing a #57 peak, but did manage to top the US Dance charts.

Although this will forever live in the shadow of its predecessor, but still manages to be a pretty great 90's dance tune that picks up where that last hit leaves off & creates something incredibly catchy with a beautiful string laden opening, before bursting into a retro disco dance anthem with some fantastic vocals where Cher sounds very relaxed against its thumping beats. A brilliant tune that more than holds its own.

At the #1 spot & coming as a total shock to NO-ONE is..."Believe", released in October 1998 as the lead single from her 22nd studio album of the same-name & departed from Cher's pop rock style of the time for an upbeat dance-pop style. It featured a pioneering use of the audio processing software Auto-Tune to distort Cher's vocals, which became known as the "Cher effect". The lyrics describe empowerment and self-sufficiency after a painful breakup. Upon release the song totally reinvented her career by topping the charts in 23 countries worldwide. it earned Cher a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest female solo artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and became the highest-selling single by a solo female artist in the United Kingdom. It is one of the best-selling singles, with sales of over 11 million copies worldwide. It has been noted that this song restored her popularity & cemented her position as a pop culture icon.

Ditching the pop/rock style that brought her so much success was a huge risk that thankfully paid off with what has to be her 1000th reinvention - this time as purveyor of pumping electronic dance-pop & of course its very prominent use of auto-tune where over time other lesser artists have abused this technique, but the fabulous Cher uses it in her favour & it simply pops. To call this one of the most influential singles in modern pop is an understatement, with Cher at her upmost very peak of her iconic career. There is nothing not to like in this number with Cher's powerhouse vocal performance & aggressive beats made this an instant classic upon first listen. Just simply AMAZING!

Me and my Mum both bought a copy of the single (without realising), that goes to show how broad the appeal of the song is.

What's with this recent habit of breaking up song titles with random parentheses?
