13th January 2019

It's a first week on top, and a first chart-topper for Chainsmokers, and also for Kelsea Ballerini. Having fallen short with all of their previous huge hits, they do with a track that is mysteriously not doing that well - I guess that Chainsmokers sound has been passed over now in favour of poppier stuff, which is a shame, cos it's very good. Pet Shop Boys' Jealousy (and also My October Symphony) charted last year in the UK albums on the revamp of Behaviour, and as neither version has previously charted, they do now that I've finally played the deluxe CD I bought then. This means Jealousy goes top 10 for the second time, the single orchestral version having previously done it in 1991, but never as high as the new peak of 3, one of their very first songs written in the early 80's, it still sounds fab in concert.

The Love Affair never charted in 1968 for me - it was a few months too early for my charting starting - but it would very easily have been top 5, so better late than never! The new version of Wicked Games leaps into the 20, though she's going to have to go some to top Chris Isaak's 1990 chart-topper, and the Mary Poppins returns film intro shoots up to 16 cos it's just fab. Tom Jones goes top 20 with that song for the 2nd time, Backstreet Boys get their biggest chart action since 2001 as No Place shoots into the 30, and highest new track comes from Lana Del Ray going all moody and interesting, just how I like her, at 29.

Calvin Harris & Rag'n'Bone Man do a collab that sounds good at 40, Westlife join the 90's boybands clogging up my charts in a way I could never have predicted 20 years ago, with their first entry in 8 years and highest charting in a decade - not that they actually ever had that many chart high: 4 top 10's and 2 other top 20's is the current total, pretty much all the non-ballads. Halsey has finally entered my charts after slipping by me, despite being a huge worldwide hit, it has grown on me as I hear it here and there. Sam Smith is back, ditto The Weeknd, and sneaking in it's The Seachers, a big band of the 60's who just kept going and touring for 55 years while not ever troubling the singles chart beyond the 60's, and only the occasional hits album package to keep them being noticed. Now they have finally called it a day and had anpther chart album to say goodvbye with - hits of course. When I was quite literally 6 years old and mad on pop chart hits and popstars, the record of theirs I was maddest on was Don't Throw Your Love Away, a tuneful cover of an American Orlons B side. I loved, and still love, a good melody, as proven by spine-tingling swooning at some of Lloyd-Webber's best in Phantom Of The Opera which I saw in London on saturday.

Hi John!

This Feeling at #1! Must've taken you a while to get into it then, it is one of my favourite of the Chainsmokers' more recent output.

Giving Jealousy a listen now, I don't think I've heard this one before! Much slower than a lot of their stuff but still sounding nice.

Nice to see Longshot enter as well, great to see that music like this can go Top 40 in 2019!

Great chart biggrin.gif
