Just completed my first listen - it's very Alex Turner tries to be Bowie, isn't it? I kinda like it although, even at just 40 minutes long, it feels like it goes on a bit and it's hard to tell most of the songs apart. Time will tell if this is one that I return to but, for now, I'm really enjoying 'Four Out of Five' and the album closer 'The Ultracheese' has shown initial signs of being a highlight.

Four Out Of Five is quite addictive, isn't it? It's been a while since I've listened to much from them so I didn't have expectations set high and there's some really cool production on there. The building production towards the end really helps it, love that touch, feels very 80s.

This works so much better as an album rather than individual songs, I liked it on first listen but I'm absolutely loving it now more songs have grown on me.

This was one of my favourites from the album, and the video is brilliant. |

I hope they don’t leave it too long to put out the follow up album to this!

Alex Turner said on Beats1 today that the next album could come much quicker than it took for TBH+C to come out after AM.
QUOTE "I'd like to (make a 7th LP soon). I've really enjoyed this tour, playing with the band again. I think that could lead to going back into the studio fairly soon."

Good. I feel they need to return to making big anthems for the next album otherwise they’d risk losing momentum and fans.

Has anyone else seen them on their tour? They're still such a good band and half the show is amazing but the new stuff is absolutely garbage and completely ruins it, I've never known a gig quite like it where the vast majority of a crowd are just stood/sat there bored and waiting for the next song, so many people talking amongst themselves. I'd be absolutely gobsmacked if anything other than Four out of Five is played on future tours. The other 15 songs would make for a great setlist on its own but too much of it fell flat.

That fits in with the review I read of one of the London dates. |

So what would you put that down to? Do you think it's because the most recent material isn't as good live, that it doesn't resonate as much with fans or that those there simply haven't listened to much of it and prefer material from AM as it has more of an anthemic sound? I haven't seen them live this time round so I don't know what it sounds like in person, but I've been pretty impressed with how the new material has looked on video. If it's the case that they're performing badly on those specific tracks then fair enough, but if it's because the fans aren't familiar with the new stuff then I'm not entirely sure what the fans/critics are expecting. If you're going to see the 'Tranqulity Base Hotel + Casino' tour then I'd expect the majority of the music to come from that record (which it hasn't - it seems that they're still playing AM, Humbug, WPSIATWIN tracks as much as TBH+C). If the fans there aren't enjoying it then maybe they should've waited to listen to the new album to make their mind up whether they enjoyed it before purchasing tickets! |

Probably a bit of all three. Was it bad? No, not necessarily, just really flat and it was clear that the majority of people there either didn't know, or didn't like, the stuff off it. Finishing the set with '...Dancefloor' with everyone absolutely buzzing and then starting the encore with Star Treatment was absolutely woeful, never experienced an atmosphere change instantly so much before. I don't like the album, listened to it a couple of times, realised it's really not for me and binned it off. That's fine, it happens. I wasn't sure what to expect seeing it live, but they played enough slow tempo (or slowed down) songs from previous albums (Knee Socks, ...When You're High, Do Me a Favour, Cornerstone, 505) that too much of the show just felt really boring waiting for something to happen.
Unfortunately you couldn't really wait to see what it was like before as the whole tour of 20+ dates sold out before anything about the new album had been revealed. I think there's a good reason they did it that way round too as it would've sold much more slowly. I'd have been far less likely to have spent £70 on a ticket and the cost of a day/night in London + travel had the tour gone on sale in June. The title track is being released on vinyl along with a new B-side titled 'Anyways' on November 30! They have also released a short documentary about the recording of the album: |
