I NEED to share Marina and the Diamonds new single. It's not as good as Radioactive (atm anyway), but it really is incredible.
I hope she manages to do incredibly well with this era, or at least match the success of her last era. It's released on April 16th.
And she is FIT as!

Just noticed, why is Tracy Chapman - Fast Car doing so well?

oh absolutely! my favourite song of the year so far, it's just brilliant. even if it is generic, she pulls it off better than the most of them. it's not like it's an exact rip-off of 'tik tok' or 'till the world ends', it does have it's own melody. I love the subtle synths behind the guitar on the chorus as well. it's just so... ah. I wish it got more appreciation. unfortunately it won't be a hit though.

I don't think it's too generic at all. And i can't see why it couldn't be a mediocre hit (top10?). It's getting support from radio1, and hopefully Marina has built up a little fanbase from The Family Jewels to help push it further up the charts.
It (and her) are just breathtaking Looning over. :lol

Surprised at how well Alphabeat's Vacation is doing. I half expected it to peak at around #597. Fully expecting it to drop like a stone in 4 days time after no radio stations pick it up.

as much as I'd love to believe that, the majority of her original fanbase have gone off her because she's a filthy sell-out. of course I couldn't really give half a shit whether she has or hasn't. pop music all the way!

Marcus Collins // Seven Nation Army = 11 and 52 [possibly a 2nd week in the top 10]
Rizzle Kicks // Traveller's Chant = 116
Will Young // Losing Myself 112
Posted by: Liаm 12th March 2012, 09:53 PM
Great to see Traveller's Chant climbing, it's their best single imo Especially after the awful Mama Do The Hump! I really like Down With The Trumpets as well though, and When I Was Youngster is good.

I know everyone is quick to jump on the 'sellout' bandwagon but I don't buy it. Radioactive was eurodance gold yes, but Homewrecker and PrimaDonna sound just like tracks on The Family Jewels (Oh No! & Hollywood etc). She really hasn't changed or sold-out much at all.

Agreed. Mama Do The Hump was fun for a few weeks but it's not very fun to listen to without the video and it's very annoying now.
Traveller's Chant > Down With The Trumpets > Mama Do The Hump > When I Was A Youngster

Not so much sold out, just turned absolutely awful. Radioactive was atrocious as is Homewrecker. PrimaDonna was all right at first listen. None of them compare to Fear and Loathing though.

It's just the general pattern for held-back releases. Teenage Dream was also frontloaded though, and hence decreasing too (maybe at an even faster rate than Alexandra at the time). This time Alex is with Nicki and Gotye, whose songs are selling quite consistently, so if she falls the contrast in the pop bars will be bigger.
Not saying she's 100% definitely going to fall really fast. It's possible that her TV promo tommorrow might boost her, or it's possible that Capital will suddenly start hammering the song. But it's likely that she will otherwise.

I can't see it getting to #1 (in the UK). It's promotion campaign has been so spread out. There was that time Take Care kept re-entering the top 10, and it was on Radio 1's playlist, so if it had a video then it could've done it, but not now. Either way though, it's looking to sell over 300,000 in total.
If it did get to #1, it would be such a weird chart run.

Speaking of Rihanna, is her feature on Coldplay's 'Princess Of China' being released as a single?

21. I Won't Give Up - Jason Mraz 44. Greyhound - Swedish House Mafia
This could be a massive hit for Jason!
Posted by: SLlewellyn 12th March 2012, 10:55 PM
Swedish House Mafia climbing pretty quickly up the iTunes chart now - am I correct in thinking it's another instrumental release? Would certainly be a welcome addition to the charts, despite the fact that Madeon's 'Icarus' already grabbed the title of 'recent instrumental since Poppiholla'.
Posted by: Jonjoria 12th March 2012, 11:00 PM
Why is 'Turn Me On' climbing, suddenly? It's now at #7, but I thought it was started to die off in sales and stuff . (It's not 59p either)
30. Rockstar (feat. Brian May) - Dappy (Is this struggling to re-sell? ) 52. Oh My Goodness - Olly Murs (Happy to see him climbing! Really hope it gets him another top 20 hit.) 65. Part Of Me - Teenage Dreamers (This is going to be another big hit for Ms. Perry.) 106. A Thousand Years - Christina Perri (I was sort of hoping this would reclimb back into the top 75 at least with it being the films release to DVD this week ) 123. Vacation - Alphabeat (YES! Hopefully it can at least get top 75 by this time tomorrow!)
Posted by: Carel :) xx 12th March 2012, 11:03 PM

In all fairness, most of the top 20 are falling and Next To Me is also on dark red so Alexandra won't drop below her just yet.

Marcus has held up very well. He's still #11!!
I hope Jay-Z and Kanye can get to #11 soon though.
If anybody is interested, One Direction are at #1 AND #2 on the US iTunes chart or the albums!! So their album is likely to get to #1 then I imagine!

I think Marcus will fall more later on in the week once the DOI performance wears off.

Where did this Jason Mraz song come from?
It would be the weirdest thing ever if this eventually out-peaked 'I'm Yours'. Now that is a song I would love to see re-enter the top 40.
Posted by: steve201 13th March 2012, 08:51 AM
Jason Mraz doing very well - is he only being played by radio 2 or has capital plalisted him too?
I actually think Elephant will not fall as much as other held back releases because of its lack of radio airplay will meawn alot of people are only hearing it for the first time this week?!

11. Ni**as in Paris - JAY Z & Kanye West One more place to go (although it'll blatantly be overtaken by Jason Mraz before it gets close to #10 Jason is to #18)
31. Greyhound - Swedish House Mafia Listening to this now. Not quite as good as their previous singles ATM but I thought that about Antidote on first listen, I'm sure it'll grow on me Doing really well anyway, I do hope it can give them a fifth top 10 hit. You wait two and a half years for an instrumental hit and then 2 come along at once... I hope we'll start seeing more instrumentals in the chart now with this and Icarus doing well (well, the latter only had 1 week top 40 so 'doing well' is a bit of a stretch, but still the biggest instrumental hit since Poppiholla).

To be honest it appears like a lot of the songs in the top 10 are in red (on kworb). Alex has barely changed over the last 12 hours or so which is encouraging. I shall be watching this morning at 1030 as I think thats when shes performing
Posted by: Bré 13th March 2012, 10:04 AM
The latest song to disappear from iTunes is Redlight's Get Out My Head The version from 'Cream Club Anthems 2012' will likely just take over from the deleted single version though, up to #121.
74. Side Steps & Side Burns - The Blims What is this and why is it doing so well?
96. So Listen (feat. T-Pain) - Cody Simpson Is this the kid who was supposed to be the new Justin Bieber like a year ago? Ergh if so.
116. We're All No One (Original Mix) [feat. Afrojack & Steve Aoki] [UK Radio Edit] - NERVO I really hope this can somehow still go top 100 officially
Posted by: marrb 13th March 2012, 10:17 AM
Lissie is climbing up so slowly, I hope she has done enough to be played on the Chart rundown on R1 tomorrow. Alexandra will probably be performing around 12:15 on This Morning. Keep Climbing Elephant, I would not even mind an Alan Titchmarsh slot.

Assuming it does go top 40 on Sunday, there must be a decent chance of MW giving an updated total for 'I'm Yours' next week, and if so, we'll have a much better idea of how long before Adele-SFTTR is likely to catch it.

I would've thought SFTTR would have already surpassed IY. They both peaked at #11 with a lot of longevity but most of SFTTR's sales came in a far better sales climate.

55. Gold On the Ceiling - The Black Keys This could become their biggest hit this week - their previous best was #62 with 'Till I Get My Way' Well, 'Lonely Boy' will probably be their biggest selling single as GOTC will fade out when it's put back to 99p.
95. Home Again - Michael Kiwanuka Ooh, top 100 re-entry please
100. Traveller's Chant - Rizzle Kicks Looks like this could be another big hit for them. Is the video out yet?

I do too. Although it is miles better than Collide and therefore deserves to do much better.

Can't believe how well 'The One That Got Away' has done. It'll probably cross 300K soon and it only peaked at #18 and was a SIXTH single. It's already sold more than some #1's from last year.

Ugh, the Nicki song is all types of horrible. Thank god Gotye and Fun. (US) are fending it off.
Does anyone know when "Ai Se Eu Te Pego" is released in the UK? I'm really enjoying the alternative music creeping through into mainstream music. As long as it gets rid of the "party all night, sleep all day/LMFAO/Rihanna" music, i'm enjoying it.
I hope Marina has a hit with "PrimaDonna". I'm in love

It's been out for ages. Currently #229 and it's normally inside the top 300 or just outside so has probably sold quite a bit without charting yet.
16. I Won't Give Up - Jason Mraz Overtaken Taio Cruz, looks like Hangover won't be getting near the top 10 this week then. I'm sure it'll get there eventually though.
24. Greyhound - Swedish House Mafia
97. Paddling Out - Miike Snow Hope this can keep climbing for a while to come.

I think 'Elephant' is a far better track as a whole but I prefer the vocal on 'Collide'. But then I think 'Collide' was always pushed as a belting club smash rather than just a club smash if that makes sense.
Just talking about 'Collide' makes me miss Leona.

Radio 1 have a petty vendetta against her because her music is apparently "cookie-cutter pop" (yet they seem to think Pixie Lott and JLS make ground-breaking music) and Capital probably just don't like the song. They supported her up until now.

Seriously!? I was only expecting them to play it on the chart show and potentially request show. It is a positive sign. Pete Tong did do the first play on the Sympho Nympho mix. Fingers crossed Elephant can get some form of major radio support. The fact it isn't even in the radio top 50 and is doing this well is brilliant. You have got to give it to Alexandra, she works her ass off to get the results she wants.

No you were right I think! There are certain albums where digital sales are much higher than physical (Ke$ha's Animal had like 74% of it's sales from downloads) but in general iTunes doesn't mean much. Rumer hit #1 (and #2 I think?) but only peaked at like ~#50. Still, I expect 1D will be doing a decent amount of physicals too.

Alex does work really hard but I think she accepts that some people still view her as the X-factor girl who has had success handed to her on a plate. Alexs fans are also really loyal and supportive though. I am shocked at R1 they really do hate her but fair play to them they have played Elephant a few times. I hope Elephant can keep climbing.

SHM have slowed down a bit but hopefully they can get top 40 at least this week (allowing for the fact they missed out on Sunday sales).
Great decision to make Charlie Brown 59p, new peak this week hopefully Would be cool if it could outpeak Life In Technicolor ii.
'Wild Ones' back up to #4, knocking Emeli to #5. Wild Ones is destined to be #4 forever it seems

I'm surprised he even knows who Alex is, or even listens to music like that. He got her iTunes position wrong aswell.
It's funny that Radio 1 have probably given more support to Alexandra than Capital have with this song. Those stations don't only play their playlists anyway. I've heard Moves Like Jagger a few times on Radio 1 outside the chart show, and I haven't even been listening to Radio 1 that much lately anyway.

The charts have thrown up a LOT of surprises this year. I never thought I'd see Azealia Banks' "212" in the top 20 on iTunes Also nice to see Jay-Z/Kanye just outside the top 10 as well as an OA/OS instrumental song with no hype selling on Swedish House Mafia's name alone! It's a good song but not something I'd expect to make the top 40.
Unfortunately we have a bad surprise too in the form of Jason Mraz getting another hit single

I don't think the Jason Mraz thing is too much to worry about. It went to #1 on US iTunes with a big lead...and then he free-falled BIG TIME. He might do the same here (although not as dramatically obviously).
So you think it's going to climb back up the charts to #8 or higher? I love the song, but I think you're being a bit too optimistic. The song has already sold over 200,000 aswell I think. I'm not sure how many sales it has left in it.

You should be lucky Nicki is releasing a video for this single. Young Money artists are probably worse with music videos than Adele is. They tend to release music videos for songs 3 months early or 3 months late, or often not at all.
Jay-Z and Kanye are still MILES away from getting the top 10 effect. Jason Mraz and/or Swedish House Mafia might overtake them before they get there.
Posted by: Bré 13th March 2012, 10:03 PM
Jay-Z and Kanye have roughly halved the gap to the top 10 (with their top version) since last night, I think they could sneak in there if they keep increasing tomorrow.

Probably that massive arguement she's having with Iggy and T.I. atm is boosting her. 26. Rihanna ft. Jay-Z - Talk That Talk - I really hope this can at least peak higher than #25. 28. LMFAO - Sorry For Party Rocking 34. M.I.A. - Bad Girls - Looks safe for top 40 this week. FINALLY. 36. Drake ft. Rihanna - Take Care 39. Tyga - Rack City - Why isn't this higher? I can't cope. 40. The top 3 are pretty much set in stone this week barring something extraordinary - with Nicki slotting in at #2.

Come on Coldplay, 16 places in 10 hours, keep climbing!!! I want top 20 this week and top 10 next one!

What is a more impressive feat?
A song debuting in it's peak position or climbing up the chart to it's peak position

Really surprised that Swedish House Mafia are THAT high already.
I wonder how Alex's album will perform as she's bound to release a second single before the album release.

Traveller's Chant to #94.
Come on! Climb!

Is it possible that Kelly could get back into the top 10? She's been gaining a lot over the last 10 hours or so and looks like she could over take Jay Z & Kanye. Plus Stooshe/Tinchy & Pixie are starting to fall.

Jason Mraz #13 SHM #15 Coldplay #20
Alot of movement recently! This week's chart will be intetesting.
Madonna is almost out of the top 300. Wonder if she can recover this era eventually with a new single(s).

To me the overall chart run is more important, although a great peak is nice too.
A song debuting in it's peak position or climbing up the chart to it's peak position
For me, it has to be overall sales.
Any half-competent record company can get an artist a repectable peak with weeks of massive hype, but if the song is gone from the T40 just several weeks later, what does that say about the quality of the song itself?

Good to see CB finally being reduced to 59p, should have done it after the brits performance. its a good policy for post album singles though.
Whats the shock at 212s rise up itunes - its blisted on radio 1 this week and will probably rise to the alist this evening. Oh come on Paris - get that top 10 hit!!

I wondered this too - it was steadily dropping but has suddenly shot up - it must have been used somewhere but what kind of show at midday on a Wednesday is going to give it the kind of boost it just had?!

fantastic to see Charlie Brown top 20, I would love for this to go there officially to make this not be the flop is seems to be when looking at its peak its a shame it wasn't reduced at the same time as their BRITs performance, it could've even challenged for top 10!

Why has OneRepublic 'Good Life' entered? Such a shame this last era was such a flop for them. 'Secrets' remains as beautiful as 'Say (All I Need)' (which is in my all time favourite songs) and 'All the Right Moves' deserved much more success than it got.

Ah man, Alexandra Burke down to #4 - hoping EP sales can at least help it hold a top 3 placing come Sunday - would hate for it to only manage top 5 after such a promising start.
Swedish House Mafia really has come from nowhere actually - I imagine it'll be an Arctic Monkeys - R U Mine? situation - falling 10/15 places on its second week (only #40 officially). Coldplay too is likely to miss out on the top 20 potentially - not even top 40 in the Wednesday update - though Noel Gallagher's 'Dream On' is showing up at #28 - so it could well just push this out.

Charlie Brown is #33 today. There's a little thing called 'Ctrl+F', you might want to try using it
Greyhound was released on Monday and only really took off yesterday so I'm surprised it's even top 40 today, if it can go top 10 on iTunes it has a good chance of going top 20 this week IMO.

(Annoyingly bumped Charlie Brown back down to #19, but I'm sure that'll continue to climb anyway )
46. Gold On the Ceiling - The Black Keys Heard this on R1 today. It's better than 'Lonely Boy'. Could be heading for the iTunes top 40 soon?
74. Hold On - Alabama Shakes I spy yet another new song that's entered the top 100 out of absolutely nowhere this week Sniffy Dog to #82 (fair enough if it's in an advert), The Blims and We Are The In Crowd have left the top 100 though. Cody Simpson to #93, haven't heard the song but I can already tell it's awful somehow

Why not? Like 90% of the songs iTunes decide to discount don't really need it.
I'm also quite shocked that Glee Cast have never done a Glee Cast song, come to think of it. Especially when they're doing the likes of LMFAO, you'd think Taylor Swift would be perfect for them to cover.

To be honest, they're not really "jumping on the bandwagon" in this case, since there isn't one to jump on.
I found out that Rack City isn't in the top 40 on the mid-weeks. If it doesn't make it this week, I think it'll never make it.

It was released very shortly after it premiered IIRC. Not sure if it was exactly OA/OS.
EDIT: Wikipedia says it premiered on the 22nd of April and was released on the 15th of May, so yeah, pretty much OA/OS.
Greeyhound actually premiered on the 17th of February apparently, so it isn't exactly OA/OS either.

I know you were joking anyway. But do you think it will be one band that will do it? I would imagine, if it ever happens, it would be a case of maybe the pop songs using more guitars in, then indie/alternative artists gradually getting bigger hits, and then rock bands gradually getting bigger hits after that. And nobody would be able to pin-point the particular artist/song that brought it back.
I think it's in the process of happening now to be honest. We haven't got to the stage where rock bands are having massive hits, but songs like Set Fire to the Rain, We Are Young, Somebody That I Used to Know, even songs like Part of Me and Stronger, show that we could be heading that way I think. It's a big change, when you think this time last year it was S&M, Born This Way, Till the World Ends, Grenade, Firework, etc. dominating the worldwide charts.

Sad that Tinchy fell out of the top 10 now, but it's okay if he's letting SHM in. He might miss the top 10 officially this week now, as I can see him falling quite fast without the top 10 effect.
Posted by: ż CHARLIE ? 14th March 2012, 07:49 PM
Jay-Z and Kanye will probably be back up to #11 soon enough then but I can't see them getting any higher unless SHM take a nasty tumble.

Now Greyhound has the top 10 effect I could see it getting at least as high as #6! Hope it can go top 20 officially this week then top 10 next week. Could potentially outpeak Poppiholla Then it'd be the highest peaking instrumental since Pjanoo I think?
I really hope Niggas In Paris can now sneak past Stooshe and also climb to at least #7 before Sunday when Katy, Labrinth and JLS will blatantly shoot straight into the top 10. It needs to get into the top 10 soon or it'll be too late and it'll end up being one of those annoying songs where everything is going so well until it reaches the top 15 then it just stops. Kanye really doesn't have the best luck recently does he? Shame as his last two albums (I'm including "Watch the Throne" in that) are a career high IMO.

I expect Alexandra Burke to fall quite fast tbh, with three new entries in the top 10 next week, she will need to be #06 on iTunes come Sunday not to fall out, I can see a 3-11 drop for her unfortunatly! She will only continue to drop on iTunes, the worrying this was that she had a 10% lead on Flo Rida this morning, she's now over 10% behind Emeli Sande, who she also had a big lead on!

She Doesn't Mind, in my opinion, is poor compared to most of Sean Paul's discography. He has a long list of classics, but She Doesn't Mind won't be added to that list imo. It's a bit of a non-event. Got 2 Luv U was insanely catchy at least.
I hope Climax is a big hit, but I can't see it happening. It just seems too good to be true. I wouldn't think the UK public would enjoy it very much, since it's not very loud or fast.

Surprised to see a fake version of 'Let's Go' showing up already. Hope it can finally give Calvin a second #1 as a lead artist after two #2s and two #3s. Ne-Yo is due a #1 this year after all as he normally has one every two years (he broke that by getting one last year as well but shush).
'Fever' to be a hit? I do really like that song but it's not an obvious hit at all. (Although I guess after Redlkight got a top 20 hit it makes sense somewhat).

Historically it has always been framed as being one band that breaks a genre into (or back into) the mainstream - The Libertines are seen as the band that kick-started the British 00s rock, The Strokes are portrayed as bringing indie back into focus, whilst Suede get the credit for kick-starting the Britpop scene. However, at the time there were other bands having similar levels of success that don't seem to have been seen in such a positive light in hindsight when they had just as much a part of starting the phases they were associated with. Perhaps it's just part of human nature to place the start of a movement on 'one' artist, when it's more than likely that a number of artists and movements contributed to it's mainstream acceptance.

Yeah. Those are good points actually. One reason for that might be because one particular band gets a massive obsessed fanbase and then all their fans will claim that their favourite band brought around the musicial movement, and eventually the media will start reporting that as the case and people who don't know any better will believe it. I've never witnessed a rock revival in my lifetime before (or at least, not in my memory), so I'm just speculating there.

It's more likely journalists who are generally fans of hyperbole. In years to come we'll probably hear that "Band X were the ones who saved rock 'n' roll" yet those of us who lived through it will realise it's never that simple. For every Strokes there's a White Stripes, a band who were arguably just as important in retrospect. Even Nirvana weren't the single-handed launchers of grunge into the mainstream that history seems to think they were.

Wow. This is a rather sudden turnaround. Like a whole hour ON Alex, or a whole hour with Alex in the studio with them? I like Alexandra (well, her personality and a couple of her songs), but I'm not sure how they'd do an hour-long show on her, to keep an audience outside her fanbase interested.
To be fair though, I definitely remember Alex being interviewed on Radio 1 one afternoon in the week Start Without You got released (in which they also played the song then, outside the chart show).

Ha that's...pretty random. The best remix he was on in 2011 imo was the remix to I'm Beamin by Lupe Fiasco.

Sniffy Dog?
What on earth convinced this poor singer to go by the name 'Sniffy Dog'?!!

05. Alexandra Burke - Elephant 54.9% 06. David Guetta & Nicki Minaj - Turn Me On 42.1% 07. David Guetta & Sia - Titanium 41.2% 08. Swedish House Mafia - Greyhound 39.8%
Not looking so good for Alexandra tomorrow, I think come Sunday morning she will be around #07 on iTunes before dropping out for Katy Perry, Labrinth & Jls.
13. Tinchy Stryder & Pixie Lott - Bright Lights (Ouch at the effect of following out of the top 10) 17. Coldplay - Charlie Brown 20. Marcus Collins - Seven Nation Army

Odd that it isn't there, unless iTunes comprises a smaller share of the market than we thought.

553. White Flag - Dido
Any reason why this has re-appeared?
Maybe one play on a popular radio station? I normally reckon on re-entries below #500 as being fairly random, though.
8. Greyhound - Swedish House Mafia 11. I Won't Give Up - Jason Mraz 33. Little Boxes - Sniffy Dog
Sniffy Dog?
What on earth convinced this poor singer to go by the name 'Sniffy Dog'?!!
I think Sniffy Dog is actually just a producer, the 'album name' says that it features someone called Adrienne Stiefel.
FFS, Niggas In Paris is down to #12 again being overtaken by Jason I bet Jason will go and overtake Greyhound now and stop it from surviving the new releases of Sunday I think Greyhound will need to be at least #6 to be safe from new releases (Katy, Labrinth, JLS and maybe Sean Paul), they should get to #6 very soon but if Jason overtakes them it's a big jump to overtake Alexandra and they'll be falling again by the weekend anyway most likely.

It's a fine line though, with someone like Kanye he's going to have a core fanbase buying the album no matter how many singles they already have from it and if the singles are good then it'll only encourage more casual buyers. Well, that was the idea at least. Why no one bought an album which we'd already heard "Power", "Monster" and "Runaway" from I don't know given that's three of his career best right there.

Jay Z now back up to #11 and is really nearing StooShe. I really can't seem the former making the official top-10 now though, especially with a bunch of new big releases next week.
And to think this week's chart isn't going to be that dull? Quite a bit of movement with Alexandra, Swedish House Mafia and Jason Mraz all debuting in the chart, Azealia, LMFAO and M.I.A. debuting in the top-40 + a few of climbers / big fallers.
Dappy up to #21 now. STILL looking only for two top-20 weeks with a peak of #2. Absolutely dire.

Yes, of course I've heard her songs. Some of her songs are boring imo. I'm sure I 'd Poison and Wet hundreds of times when it was in the charts. I have her as my sig picture, because Right There was one of my favourite songs of 2011, and I do like a most of her songs, especially with the Pussycat Dolls, and she's really beautiful imo.
Rihanna's my favourite pop artist, and even she has a fair few songs I don't like.

I dunno. Now Katy Perry has been moved forward a week I'm expecting the top 5 next week to officially look like:
01. Katy Perry 'Part Of Me' 02. Gotye feat. Kimbra 'Somebody That I Used to Know' 03. Nicki Minaj 'Starships' 04. Labrinth 'Last Time' 05. JLS 'Proud'
I get the feeling now, that both Labrinth and JLS are extremely front loaded and will only do well until about Tuesday on iTunes. Labrinth will hold on longer than JLS though. 'Starships' could be number 2, it depends on whether the video is released next week or if it gets the price reduction to 59p for a week. (I get the feeling that it's due one soon, I dunno why ) Maybe Gotye will also be chopped down in price so it'll prevent it from falling any further?

Oh definitely. I also bought that "shit song" by Gotye too. Best 99p I've spent so far this year (oh, I also bought 'Titanium' when it was 59p).
Clearly our tastes in music are polar opposites.

That's what I'd predict aswell (except with Nicki and Labrinth swapped around). I can't imagine Katy not getting #1.
The week after that I can see it being between Chris Brown, Plan B, Gotye and Nicki Minaj for #1. It would be amazing if Gotye got 3 runs at #1. That can't've happened in the UK charts in a long time.
Posted by: Bréyhound 15th March 2012, 08:24 PM
There's no way JLS will be as low as #5 - I think we'll almost certainly have an all new top 3 of Katy, Labrinth and JLS which could be in pretty much any order, then maybe Sean Paul also going top 10. HOPEFULLY Greyhound and Niggas In Paris will also climb in (well, if the latter could get there this week that'd be ideal but I don't see it happening).

I mean at the end of the day your putting money in Gotye's pocket, it's not as if he will come and thank all of you individually. There's no need to have a heart attack because I critized his song.
Posted by: gooddelta 15th March 2012, 08:34 PM
I'm unsure as to how all of the new releases will do next week actually, I just can't see Gotye dropping from #1 to #4 or further when it's still such a massive song. They're all such weak singles by their respective artists, Last Time has finally grown on me but to see it at #1 when Earthquake couldn't get there would be ridiculous. JLS' song is a cliched non-event which will disappear as quickly as it arrived. Part Of Me is my favourite but it's FAR weaker than the six singles from the pre re-release Teenage Dream era, it really doesn't deserve to be at #1, and if it does will only do so by virtue of being a previously unavailable Katy song.
I doubt Gotye will get six weeks and I'm sure one of the new releases will get it. Part Of Me will linger around the chart for the longest so I guess it should be that but it doesn't feel strong enough to be a #1, but then it debuted at the top in the US so what do I know

I didn't think it was going to go anywhere else I buy a song as I like it, and I am aware where the money goes. What a bizarre thing to say.
Posted by: aprilj 15th March 2012, 08:38 PM
I think next week's top 5 will go:
01 Katy Perry - Part of Me 02 JLS - Proud 03 Gotye feat Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know 04 Labrinth - Last Time 05 Nicki Minaj (if she releases a video it will be at #3 and bump the others down).
Posted by: Liаm 15th March 2012, 08:39 PM
It's likely that we'll have an all new top 3, but then also I wouldn't be surprised if one or more underperformed. I definitely think Katy has the number 1 though, and rightfully so! It's hardly her best (in fact it's her weakest single imo) but Labrinth and JLS are two average at best tracks.

In the US, they've had a few songs have three runs at #1 in recent years:
Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love T.I. - Whatever You Like T.I. ft. Rihanna - Live Your Life Bruno Mars - Grenade
As for Katy's song. I don't like it that much. It's kinda okay, but I think it's quite weak compared to the likes of E.T. or even Firework.

I reckon 'Part Of Me', in the US anyways, sold on name alone. Having scored 5 US no. 1 singles between 2010/11, Katy Perry was the most successful US female artist so the success of 'POM' just continued where 'Last Friday Night' left off.
Then again, that's USA. Is Katy Perry that popular in the UK? Is there even a video for 'Part Of Me'? I've not seen it if there is.
To put it bluntly, I don't want JLS no. 1 next week. I'd rather see Nicki Minaj there.

Posted by: Jonjoria 15th March 2012, 09:13 PM
JLS' new song won't be as big as people predict I reckon. I think it'll easily do 70k, but I can't see Gotye trailing off that quickly in sales and will do 73k at least. Katy I can see doing 80k. Labrinth and Nicki will be incredibly close I think. It's all just depending on the premiere of the 'Starships' video now, for Nicki. That'll be the deciding factor between them two.
Posted by: HausofKubrick 15th March 2012, 09:14 PM
I want:
1. Nicki 2. Gotye 3. Katy Perry (decent pop song, but not worthy of #1 imo) 4. Labyrinth 11. JLS
What are the chances of Nicki releasing a music video a week after filming it? Maybe she will though, and if so, it should stay top 3. Interesting to see how next week pans out.
Why've you nicked my Lana lips!
I reckon it will go...
01 Katy 02 Gotye 03 Labrinth 04 Nicki 05 JLS
Posted by: SLlewellyn 15th March 2012, 09:25 PM
I can only see JLS reaching #1 next week - not only is for charity, but JLS are always extremely front loaded - and a 01-01-06-01-01-08-01-02-16 discography doesn't exactly predict that 'Proud' would debut outside the top 2.
I reckon; 01 JLS 02 Labrinth 03 Gotye (feat. Kimbra) 04 Katy Perry 05 Nicki Minaj
Labrinth will have EP sales to boost it, whilst Katy Perry will lose sales because of all the fake version downloads. If it weren't for the radio airplay and fact R1 are going to be playing it all of next week after her Live Lounge special, I would've predicted Katy Perry to debut at #6/7.
Posted by: mod2793 15th March 2012, 09:40 PM
Nicki is increasing really fast, she has stated that Starships video will be released before her new album (April 3rd) so this could be a #1 contender in the coming weeks if it stays around the top 5 before the video.
Posted by: Eric_Blob 15th March 2012, 09:40 PM
231. Childish Gambino - Heartbeat
^ There's a remix of this going viral at the moment, which is probably why it's in the top 300 (reminiscent of how Rack City first got into the chart ).
Posted by: GrAmii 15th March 2012, 10:16 PM
I sadly predict next week JLS for #1. Their fans and the charity aspect make it a certainty The week after I expect them to be like #6 behind the other four and Plan B
JLS have the #1 on lock I think. I don't really expect Katy Perry to be a factor as Part of Me seems to have zero buzz (well there is that fake version I guess but aside from that..) and also doesn't have a video yet. I don't know what they're playing at with that. I'd like Labrinth to get #1 and maybe Plan B to to knock him off next week as I'm sick of Gotye but none of the contenders (Nicki, JLS, Katy) are really worthy of #1. Labrinth is the best of a bad bunch and it would make up for Earthquake being unlucky! And then Plan B can reign until something better comes along. Realistically thought JLS will take the #1 and Nicki will knock them off the week after.

Oh well, atleast guest star Ricky Martin was hot

I can't see JLS getting to #1. The Wanted and The Saturdays both missed out with their charity efforts so I don't see what makes JLS any different. Plus 'Take A Chance On Me' and 'Do What I Feel' underperformed so it's not like they're as popular as they were in 2009.
I can't see Katy going to #1 either. She's *only* had two #1's over here (although her last six singles were all massive) and with no video I can't see it debuting at the top. It's also her worst single from this era.
I could see Labrinth getting it (hype after 'Earthquake') or Gotye.
Posted by: Bréyhound 15th March 2012, 11:03 PM
5. Greyhound - Swedish House Mafia 6. Elephant (feat. Erick Morillo) - Alexandra Burke
Woo, keep climbing SHM I could see them possibly getting as high as #3 unless they slow down loads tomorrow. Hopefully they should now be safe from the onslaught of new releases.
(Also, I see iTunes has now declared Erick worthy of appearing on the feed now )

I read they're doing like David Guetta, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, etc. and releasing a song every week in the run up to their album. So maybe it's just a promo single. Like they'll put it for download but not really promote it much. That song is in no way strong enough to be a proper US single imo. It didn't do that well even in the UK as a charity single.

01. Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know 100% 02. Nicki Minaj - Starships 85.3% (New Pop Bar Peak)

'Gold Forever' is underrated/under appreciated I feel. It's definitely the inspiration behind the idea of them doing 'Glad You Came'. Who'd have thought GYC would have done as well as it has in the US? Hope 'Gold Forever' shocks too.

Because Jay-Z & Kanye West are both black artists, so them using the word "ni**a" isn't racist. It would be racist if for example Eminem or Professor Green were using it to describe a black person.

That's not racist, it's classist. So a white person using the word isn't necessarily going to have been discriminated against with that description.
Using 'niggas' as a self-descriptor works similarly to when gay people starting using the word 'queer' - taking an insult and claiming it as an empowering term instead.

Agreed, I actually shudder inside every time I hear or see the word. On that basis alone I'd rather not see the song top 10, but on top of that the song itself is actually f***ing dreadful. Why are so many people championing it to go top 10?

Unbelievable how well 'Niggas in Paris' is doing! Didn't think they'd really get a hit from this album, so glad though. Definitely my favourite from the album, one of the best tracks of last year easily.

I want it top 10 because it's amazing. One of the catchiest songs in the top 100 easily, very different to everything else that's out. A huge grower. Much like Gotye's song in those respects. It's the sort of song that people will be referring back to for years imo.

I think the main selling point of 'n****'s in Paris' is definitely the beat. I got to say love that beat.

Yeah obviously its at a disadvantage over previous singles as '4' has sold pretty well now, but it hasnt sold such a huge amount that prevents 'End Of Time' cant be a big hit. I'm hoping top 10, we'll see. I did really like 'Love On Top' too.

I love the song, but surely what's more offensive is the lyric: "got my niggas in paris, and they going gorrilas"... Unless i haven't actually understood what it means... :/
No one knows what it means, but it's provocative.
(I'm completely with randomfurlong and Charlie regarding black rappers' use of the N word for the record - it clearly doesn't have a derogatory intent, in fact it's the exact opposite of that, so it's not offensive. The context matters more than the word itself).
Rappers using the N word isn't a new thing anyway, it's been used pretty much as long as the genre has existed, it's just because it's in a song title that it's being brought to certain people's attention now.
WOO at it being up to #9, to get back on topic Please climb to at least #6 before Sunday.

I completely agree, whilst I understand its not being used in a racist context in this sense, I generally hate that word , I'm aware its common amongst black rap, but it never fails to put me off a song, particularly when I see it in a title (sorry if discussion has moved on )

Consider this - if a white artist were to write a song with 'Pikeys' in the title, I bet the police would be knocking at their door ASAP!
It would be OK if the artist concerned identified with and considered themselves to be a 'pikey'. As others have said it's all about context and who is using the the word, rather than the word itself.

I do like Nicki but she's SUCH a sell-out. One minute she's a very urban rapper with a distinct style and delivery with credible songs ('Moment 4 Life', 'Your Love', 'Massive Attack') and the next she's wearing bright wigs, dressing like Barbie and having dance breakdowns in her songs.

I agree. And I don't see the point exactly, since there's dozens of other popular artists doing what she's doing now (Taio Cruz, Katy Perry, etc.). She was pretty unique before. I feel like she's trying to be Madonna, but the funny thing is she'll be forgotten amongst the plethora of other pop artists trying to be Madonna. She had more chance of becoming an icon by doing songs like Moment 4 Life, etc. She had much more of a niche, and less competition.
The barbie and the wigs go further back though, so I don't mind those. Just the music that's so annoying.
And a song that isn't a sell-out, End of Time up to #77!

Except she's been dressing in bright wigs for ages (see her first album cover!) and saying things like "it's Barbie bitches" since 'Massive Attack'. I don't particularly like 'Starships' but I don't see how it's that far removed from sampling the Eurythmics on 'Your Love' or the "oh-woah-oh" soundbites of 'Check It Out'. You're overlooking the other tracks she's released from Roman Reloaded, which are much more distinctive, even if I don't like those either. I wouldn't say she's sold out, she's just lost her touch for delivering good songs (in my opinion, I know 'Starships' is a favourite of many posters here).

Tbh, I think Nicki is reaching out to more fans with her current direction. Starships has a much more dance influence which appeals to more people. Plus she hasn't exactly abandoned her rap roots, just seems like she is experimenting and diversifying which is a good thing.

Looking back at Nicki discography she really does have incredible songs from all sorts of different genres, which is one reason why i love her.
My favourites from her are still the more RnB infused Moment 4 Life, Right Thru Me, etc but there is no harm in trying new things. She's not exactly selling out more experimenting. If she were to make a heavy metal record she wouldn't be selling out, so i don't see why its so different if she's making more dance orientated music. There just seems to be this weird taboo thing with making songs that are meant for a club.

Well, I'm certainly happy that she's not doing heavy metal!!!
I think she is selling out, and she's not experimenting. Songs like Starhips are going to be hits. It's not experimental at all. We've seen dozens of other songs that sound almost the same being hits over the past few years. If she was being experimental she'd be releasing songs like We Are Young, Niggas in Paris, Somebody That I Used to Know or even Climax.
Lots of Nicki's urban songs were great in clubs, and people were fine with that. It's the change in genre that annoys people I think, not the fact that her songs are club-friendly. Hip hop is music you dance to aswell, so there's no issue with that.
I don't think it's a big deal though. All that'll happen is that Nicki will become a full-on pop artist and will go on to be categorized with Katy Perry, Ke$ha and Rihanna in the future (infact, it's already happening now), and then other female rappers like Missy Elliott, Lil Kim, Eve, Da Brat, Foxy Brown, etc. will return, or newer artists like Iggy Azalea or Azealia Banks will return and fill her void (now that everybody sees there is a market for that again).
Nicki isn't going to be able to release a hip hop song after she drops her album. Her "fans" (the people that discovered her 6 months ago) will just repeatedly beg her to release electropop song after electropop song.

One of my favourite Nicki songs for a club is Lil Freak.

I don't find the " " one patronizing personally. Rolleyes I think it the worst, but only because I think people use it wrongly so much. Used in its right context (and not directed at another person), it shouldn't be patronizing in the slightest.

Yeah. Are any of the vocalists on his tracks actually in the UK atm? Jessie J probably is (LaserLight and Repeat), but she'd probably be interviewed aswell if she was performing with him.
I think usually he just has his DJ booth or whatever and then blasts out the music.
He should perform Turn Me On imo. It's not getting much radio airplay, so it needs the promo more.

oh toby, just two posts in to this topic and I already love you. keep posting, I need to laugh! I love ':)', it's a good way to shut up the bitches who think they can tell you what you can and can not do. I don't get how is patronizing though, I always had that one down as one of them smilies that just fades into the background.
ANYWAYS, ITUNES... ew, I see 'niggas in paris' is still climbing. please, please make this be it's peak. I couldn't bare to see it top 5 or even... number 1.

Aww, welcome to BuzzJack
Well Nicki Minaj is filming her video but does anyone think it will loose too much steam by the time it is released to possibly challenge for number 1? I can see new entries taking the number 1 spot next week. Shame as I really wanted Starships to get there at some point.

Niggas In Paris still stuck at #9, it'll probably drop straight out of the top 10 again on Sunday then Hopefully it can sneak into this week's top 10 then because I don't think it'll be able to get back there on iTunes. (Would make it the second single from 'Watch The Throne' to go top 10 on iTunes but not officially )

I'd rather Katy than Labrinth or JLS. I don't like POM though, from what I've heard of it. It doesn't seem as good as the likes of TOTGA, 'Firework', 'E.T.' and 'Teenage Dream'.
It's going to be weird if Gotye falls from 1-4 after being one of the longest-running consecutive #1s in years (okay I looked back at the posts yesterday and it will be the longest-running #1 since last year ).
If somehow the 3 new entries next week end up ahead of gotye then the no4 single could have its biggest sales in years - itll still sell around 60-65k next week too!

I think she's nice as a person. She's used her celebrity status to help a lot of good causes. And she's a good singer and a relatively good piano player.
I don't really like any of her songs though. But that's just my opinion.

As for M.I.A., she really should get a move on! It's annoying how she's been fluctuating between 30-40 for ages after so long as 40-50 I guess at least it should get top 40 officially, which is more than I thought for it!
The last 2 pages have been real gold. Never a dull moment in here.

34 Taio Cruz feat Flo Rida - Hangover
To think I thought this would go top 10!
Posted by: SceneofSIXCrimes 17th March 2012, 11:25 AM
I really have no idea about what three songs will be knocked out by JLS, Katy and Labrinth tomorrow. I think HRN and 'Paris' will both definitely be knocked out (maybe temporarily in Jay Z's case) but I don't know what the third one will be. 'Elephant' seems to be comfortably ahead of TMO but 'Elephant' is likely to drop rapidly soon. Also, 'Greyhound' seems to be dropping quite a bit now so maybe that will fall below both Alex and Guettaj at the crucial point.
Posted by: Eric_Blob 17th March 2012, 11:28 AM
Jay-Z/Kanye or Turn Me On I think could get back in the top 10, as I think JLS's song will probably only spend 1-2 weeks in the top 10 (I'm predicting it to debut at #3-#5, but if it exceeds my expectations and gets to #1 I can see it spending 3-4 weeks in the top 10).

I don't really see Swedish House Mafia spending more than a week in the top 10 - the new additions will no doubt push it down to #9/10 - so then it's just a matter of Alexandra / David Guetta or The Throne overtaking it to push it out. It'll only be at #10 this week officially at the highest anyway, so not really a big drop if it only falls to #11/12.

32. Side Steps & Side Burns - The Blims What is this and why is it now in the top 40?!
33. Paradise - Coldplay 83. One Day Like This - Elbow I heard both of these last night on some Sport Relief programme (someone going to the South Pole) so I'm guessing that's the reason for their latest resurgences

With Katy Perry probably claiming #1 next week since her video is premiering on Thursday but I don't think that will be enough to beat JLS this week. They have their crazy fans, music channels support, physicals and the charity element.

I think KP will have it; JLS didn't get to number 1 with TACOM - despite the XF performance and the fact that it was pre album release. I know there's a charity element to it, but The Wanted's GF only got to 3, The Sats got to 2 with JCGE as well.
Either way though next week should see a bit shake up at the top

When he said Gaga was a "relatively good piano player"
I play the piano, and I can easily play most of what I've seen her play. Like that piano version of Poker Face, I could play that, it's really quite basic. I'll never know why so many people were so impressed by it. The singing was impressive, but a child could've played that on the piano. You just need to google the chord progression. And I don't consider myself any more than a "relatively good piano player".
