WHAT?
The results of the 134th Buzzjack Song Contest semi finals. Sixty-nine nations sent in seventy-one sets of votes for their personal top ten songs in their delegated semi final. Twenty nations will qualify from each semi final while fourteen will fall to the wayside and miss out on the grand final. The qualifiers will be revealed in random order but after six qualifiers have been revealed the non-qualifiers will be revealed starting with the last place. Semi final one will start, then followed by semi final two afterwards.

WHEN & WHERE?
The results will start in this thread at 8 PM GMT+1 (UK Time) but we're pretending this contest is being held in Trinityfjord, the capital of majestic north Vinorel nation Mosquetania.

WHAT TO EXPECT?
We have five non-qualifiers with votes from 10 or more countries and five qualifiers with votes from less than 10 countries. The average reach of the songs was getting votes from 10.6 countries in semi one and 10.3 countries in semi two. We have two three-way ties in the 18th to 25th region. Whether these ties apply to a qualifying/non-qualifying position remains to be seen. The final qualifying countries in both semis (20th place) both received around 50 points. Unfortunately New Lexico and POPHub voted after the deadline passed so they will receive a 15% deduction from their points total while Bhangra failed to vote entirely and will in turn receive a 33% deduction.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE?
Yes, actually there is! Similar as to the entry reveal thread tonight I have a gift for each of the nations participating. Each nation will receive a fan-made flag inspired by their nation, official flag and whatever else I could dig up about your nation. I made 70 flags for fun, one for each nation participating. Initially I kickstarted this because I was looking for bigger versions of the flags of the nations involved in a specific size ratio but seeing how that would be a tough task and almost impossible for me to receive them all in the same size I decided to instead create these flags as they would all automatically be the desired size and I used the opportunity to advance my expertise in Photoshop.

I want to be absolutely clear that with these flags I am in no way saying my flags are better than the originals or that I don't like the original flags of each nation. There are so many different flags in this contest that are stunning, hilarious and inspired so it was a great excuse to learn more about the various nations participating. I tried to keep them at least somewhat inspired by the original but this varies from flag to flag, and sometimes I also allowed myself to make assumptions about the nation at hand - especially if there was limited information on the original flag or in the national thread. It was a fun creative project for me to see what I could make with limited information to base them on and only done for fun so I do hope you enjoy these gifts and that no one gets offended by what I created. I am after all only human. The flags are gifts so you are entitled to do whatever you want with them after I gift them to you.

Cut-off circa 50 points to qualify? I'd like to think my entry has a decent chance especially with the semi draw but a lot of ppl have said it was a bloodbath so we'll see.

Jafet just gets up each night to collect all the wigs (bloody too as they come off with the entire scalp sometimes) we keep leaving on the floor from the previous day

who even KNOWS what we are going to see for the final

Really hoping India Jordan can qualify. I don't know whether it will have appealed to the SF2 voters or not as it didn't seem like the usual dance fans were present - so I'm a bit nervous

India Jordan is one of the few tracks in semi 2 that I will be rioting over if they don't qualify (And besides, the Orbital song that it rips off was a top 10 hit so I think you should be fine...!)

Oh I actually qualified I had fully written this one off by this stage and was already moving onto thinking about my next entry so that's a very pleasant surprise

Liking the flag remaster as well (at this point I think we can expect they're just going to all look amazing, I don't know how you've done this but I am in awe xx) - I think I will stick to the original as my official flag for brand consistency/national pride despite it being clearly inferior but I'll definitely have to at least stick this version in my national thread when I eventually update it again / start a new one

Singerpurear was fun for variety but ultimately couldn't place it too high up my rankings in such a strong semi. Will say I'm impressed that it sounds shockingly 'modern' for a recording from 1938 though!

I didn't find this song instantly grabbing me as much as their previous entries from this year but I was already getting into it more by the time it was over and think it's likely it would have grown on me more - good to know that it still would have been a way off qualifying even if I had moved it up my votes a bit I guess.

Cumulonimbia also similar to Dobago in that it's one I am sure would have grown on me more so felt a little guilty about voting based on only one listen, though again it seems it wouldn't have made any difference so am off the hook!

Absolutely adored the guitar in the EXUM song.

Buzzjack Mountain got a little shafted being in such a competitive semi I think, it definitely sounded less doomed than most of their entries do and I think it would have had a good chance of qualifying had it been in semi 2.

Nearly all of these songs I'm not too bothered whether they stay or go oops, the issue with having all of my faves announced early.

With the notable exception of Rolloland, who I hope have just been drawn late rather than being (to me) a shock DNQ.

I had Same Sea pencilled as my 4 points based on the lush slower version that was originally on the Spotify playlist but then when I realised it was the original that was entered it slipped to 13th in my vote. Still sad to see it out though.

Apart from losing a couple of big faves, the qualifiers are so strong so far.

Looks like ATTLAS was the one song that may have feasibly grown on me enough on a second listen for me to make it qualify depending on how close it was, although it was only 15th for me so I think it's fairly unlikely still - that is probably the most surprising DNQ from this semi for me though!

Sad to lose my 12 in Flynnonda and I loved Buzzjack Mountain too.

Lots of my other faves that I just had no space left to vote for among the DNQs - Danaeviia, Holland-Oats, Aelandor, Cumulonimbia, Singerpurear were basically all lining up just outside - a cruel semi, insanely good.

I think there is probably the biggest disconnect between a major chart and BJSC when it comes to Germany - especially in use of the German Language and in this Genre. Theres never Crossover onto English language blogs or charts and that so regardless of their placing on the German chart they are from a BJSC perspective relatively inspired. The charts are also so much more geared towards artists like Capital Bra, Samra, Apache 207 et al than BJSC ever would be or the UK charts are so it’s relatively easy for an artist like this to score a number 1 or a top 10 (it’s just an extremely popular genre here) but the likelihood of that translating to BJSC is so low it’s why it was my threat 🤣.

Talking of the German Chart and my entries. Faded Love is currently 17 and Never Not Try debuted this week at 50, The One (my DNQ from a couple of months ago) is 71 this week (peak 57) and I’ve sent a former German #1 before in Namika - Je Ne Parle Pas Francais and that barely hit the BJSC top 40. Nico Santos, Lena x Nico Santos, Álvaro Soler, and Lotte were all moderate Hits on the German Charts too

All of the countries who had runs of more than half a year continued them again this month, meaning we still have a top four with a fairly clear lead over everyone else. Altyr Muunilinst further extend their national record to 21 finals in a row (which now matches FARC's national record to be the joint 8th longest streak among all nations in the contest's history), Hendinia and Aeroche remain in second and third and Bøtanikkä now join them as a fourth nation who have now spent a solid year without being absent from any finals.

There's not a great deal else going on in terms of national records with only two other countries currently on national record streaks - unfortunately Cumulonimbia and Summericia both stalled out after matching their previous records last month, but it's better news for Rolloland who make it to 6 in a row for the first time after previously managing 5 in a row in BJSCs 103-107. Otherwise there's only Kingdom of Horanius who follow up their first ever qualification last month with building their first streak as they make it 2 in a row. Aquafina and Zanmatony both suffer their first DNQs since their comebacks putting an end to their non-consecutive contests runs that technically lasted years.

Finding it mildly amusing that there's a huge list of countries with 2 in a row and quite a few on 4 in a row too, but I only have Cor Lupus accompanying me on the 3 in a row tier xx

Seriously? There goes my 50th... I can't rely on BJSC even for Lights apparently. Might skip the next contest, apparently I'm really out of it at the moment.

The alt flags are gorgeous though Jafet. Like how did you even have the time and creative energy to do all of this?? Genuinely incredible.

Yeah, I used to follow the German charts a lot more than I do now so I knew quite a few of your entries came from there often from recognising the artists (although Sofia was pretty massive across the rest of Europe too to be fair, I wasn't on the forum at the time you entered it but I was a fan of it at the time regardless). Even with this one I thought Never Not Try sounded so much like the sort of song German radio would love too (though it turns out he just won one of the talent shows). Just searching through the songs of BJSC thread I see quite a few massive German hits were sent in the past as well (Geiles Leben, Auf Uns and Atemlos durch die Nacht all came to mind)!

You can blame my four work trips a year to Germany (pre-Covid) for those <3 Whenever I’m there I have the radio on all the time and discover some great stuff. Both of those I still hammer regularly, along with Stadt by Cassandra Steen which I entered into a BJSC spin-off. There have been some other great German language entries too, like Frida Gold in 2011.

Just caught up on the thread, such an incredible hosting - thanks Jafet, the flags were all stunning and thanks so much for the effort.

Aquafina was a pretty huge loss there, I’d thought that could do very well for them. A few of my faves that had a lot of DNQ predictions did make it in though, which is good. Sorry to see Summericia and a few others out too.

Our new flag is FABULOUS!

I just downloaded a version on itunes - and it sounds old, in terms of sound quality! So it's either been suped up by sound studio wizardry for an expensive movie/TV spot (quite possible) or it's an identikit superb cover that's as good as or better than the original. We will be sad if it's the latter as we want that record for oldest entry....!

Well that's disappointing but at least it wasn't a close call to qualifying. Pushing my luck with the instrumentals now perhaps so might switch it up a bit for next month. Results were generally good but I'm surprised Caerfyrddia didn't qualify and that I was it's biggest fan.

OMG I love it Jafet! Thank you. *.* You've definitely put my 10 second Paint job to shame, though that's a little unfair to compare because it's SO much better.

I just wanted to echo the comments praising the immense effort you've put into hosting this contest. Outstanding.

Sad but not surprised to see EXUM out (but thx to those who threw us some points - YES Pav!), it was an incredibly strong semi final, far too strong for us Cumulonimbians who usually squeak through on a technicality - great to see Rontvia and Kathaldazia through and in Semi 2 I'll be throwing my support behind Fljótavík of course (the other Orbital sounding track )
