Only 6 weeks behind schedule.........
The Federal Republic of Ashton, in association with SugaRecordings Pty Ltd and SNÁ Midue Pty Ltd, and on behalf of the Buzzjack Broadcasting Union presents the first Buzzjack Song Contest CD Swap. It's too late to send CD's now as the links have all been sent out, you may request links of CD's you like the look of and do feel free to review it as well. If you were thinking about taking part, there's always next time! For the lucky 15 who have a shiny new 'CD' in their inboxes now comes the time to review. If you could state in this thread which CD you have (even if you have already done so in the other thread) that'd be awesome. Some guidelines for reviewing: 1] Not asking for War and Peace, at the minimum a track by track review with a ranking for each song. 2] It can be as long as you like, but 200 words is the minimum. People put effort into this and you can put the effort into the review 3] You have until Monday October 3nd 2011 at 11:59pm GMT to submit your review. 4] Once the person who received your CD has reviewed it you may reveal that you made it, the tracklist and any other details you'd like. I will send a PM with all the links after you have done your review so you can download the other CD's that interest you. Reviews for these are entirely optional but encouraged. That's all folks so get listening! I have been given "Party Hearts", which is quite an enticing title! I won't listen to the CD until later this week as my cousin is staying over for a few days and I'd like to prioritise that. But I'm really looking forward to my first listen through, and will download the CD tomorrow

I was sent "A Lost History".
The title brings me to mind this for some reason. Will download and listen when I get home! Excited! |

I got 'Flooding The Award Show' and as I said before, I reckon it belongs to RabbitFurCoat looking at the mix of music on here. Will start listening through properly and reviewing in the next couple of days!

And I got Oops... Jeg Gjorde Det Igen which can be nothing but Pavel's. Having heard the first half of it last night, I'm mildly impressed, there's only one song I hate

Without sparing any horses, here's my review...
Satellite Dreams Track 1: The first track, like the most of the rest of the CD does need to be of a higher sound quality as I can't really make out what's happening musically here. That is the only negative I have though. A frantic Icelandic (I think) indie-folk number. It's pretty good and I'm partial to this sort of music in small amounts. 6/10 Track 2: One of the new songs from German Eurovision winner, Lena. "Who'd Want To Find Love" is a really great song, but again I really want it in HQ! 9/10 Track 3: A nice little ballad, like an Andrew Lloyd Webber production with a twee edge. This is rather divine. Her voice is really pleasant too, distinctive but controlled. 8/10 Track 4: Well I thought I knew this when it started, but it appears to be a Spanish (?) version of Alison Iraheta's "Friday I'll Be Over U", I assume still sung by Alison, otherwise this vocalist is properly ripping her off . Rather good, but again the sound quality affects the listening experience. 9/10 Track 5: My favourite of the unknown tracks so far, the music is wonderful and the chorus is super catchy, but she needs to patch up on her English pronunciation! I feel like I know the voice, but can't put my finger on who it is! 9/10 Track 6: Quite a nice acoustic track sang by a moody female. It's alright, nothing outstanding but pleasant to listen to 7/10 Track 7: Another Spanish song I think. Sounds quite youthful and fun. It's very late 90's sounding. 7/10 Track 8: Time for the moody male to have a go! It's like Morrissey with a piano. Not bad, but a little too sombre for my liking 5/10 Track 9: Another song that sounds like it might be at least a decade old. It's like a guitar led version of Kaci. Liking this one quite a lot! Shame the ending cuts out suddenly 9/10 Track 10: Country-pop time! There's something quite Des'ree esque about this track, but the vocal is a lot stronger. Another song that I'm liking quite a lot! 8/10 Track 11: A 26 minute long song at 8 kbps. The sound quality really does affect my enjoyment of this track. The vocal is lovely and the music is also rather great, from what I can make out. Reminds me in a way of Dolores O'Riordan's "Ordinary Day". It's very good, but in almost half an hour, the song barely changed - far too many verses. It would have made an excellent 4 minute track! 7/10 Track 12: A pop-rock track with a superb beat! I loved this sort of music in 2004, and if this is a recent song then it's one of the best I've heard from the genre for a long while! 8/10 Track 13: A dark alternative track. Probably my least favourite so far, but for what it is, it's not bad 4/10 Track 14: Timoteij! I think I needed it slightly after the last track. "Vild" was one of my favourites from their incredibly strong debut album! 10/10 Track 15: Sounds like a slightly rockier version of Owl City. Quite nice, but not something I would listen to out of choice 5/10 Track 16: Le Kid! "Oh My God" is one of their many absolutely excellent pop tunes! Oh Alright will be in my top 5 albums of this year comfortably I should think. 10/10 Track 17: Lena's "Maybe". Good song, but not one of my favourites of hers. It sounds rather nice here though! 8/10 Track 18: Another pop-rock song with an electro edge. This is actually really good in a trashy kind of way. I feel I know the vocals from somewhere, but not sure who it is 9/10 Overall then, quite a lot of really strong songs here. The sound quality of most tracks was quite disappointing, but I'll definitely be trying to hunt down some HQ versions of my favourites. Average mark out of 10 for the entire compilation - 7.6/10 My favourite discoveries; Tracks 3, 5, 9, 10, 12 & 18 - All of which will be by artists I'll be following up after I find out who they are. As far as guessing who made the CD, I'll say Pavel purely based on the fact what I think is an Icelandic song kicks it off and there are various Eurovision references intermingled with more alternative songs. |

Having a first quick listen through, I know the first 5 tracks. I have a feeling it might be Dandy*'s, he's the only one I know in the list who's a fan of Alex Winston. Plus the rest sounds like songs (I imagine) he would like too.

That was actually my CD, Ghosty Quite glad you didn't manage to guess, I thought the two Lena tracks & the title might have given it away (along with something that will be revealed later), although the indie put you off the scent I guess. First of all I shall apologize for the song quality, most of my Mp3s are about 128kbps which I can deal with easily and guess I've grown used to. I don't know if something goes wrong in the uploading though - track 11 was only 3:36 when I put it onto the CD, although there is an extended version at just over 6 minutes It also wasn't as low as 8kbps, not the version I have.
1. Jónsi - Sticks & Stones [Icelandic yes. I know it from the movie 'How To Train Your Dragon', and do have a soft spot for Jónsi] 2. Lena - Who'd Want To Find Love 3. Regina Spektor - The Call [I think she's Russian? This song plays near the end of the second Narnia movie which is where I know it from] 4. Allison Iraheta - El Viernes Te Olvido Yo 5. Despina Vandi - I Believe It (Olo Lipis) [she's Greek as far as I'm aware] 6. Anya Marina - Satellite Heart 7. RBD - Empezar Desde Cero [they're Mexican] 8. Editors - No Sound But The Wind 9. Jennifer Braun - I Care For You [she came 2nd to Lena in the national final last year, certainly not a decade old, thought you might've known it] 10. Kat DeLuna - A Change 11. Metric - Eclipse (All Yours) 12. Twenty Twenty - Love To Life [very recent actually, released in April and only reached #60 in the singles chart, with their album getting to #26] 13. The Killers - A White Demon Love Song [opposite of my opinion, your least favourite but it spent four weeks at #1 in my personal chart at the end of 2009] 14. Timoteij - Vild 15. Owl City - Enchanted ['slightly rockier Owl City' is Owl City, giving his take on the Taylor Swift song, Enchanted] 16. Le Kid - Oh My God 17. Lena - Maybe [my favourite from 'Good News' actually] 18. Jedward - Everyday Superstar You certainly must've known the vocals from somewhere. The shame that you gave a Jedward song NINE out of 10. I reckon everyone else should listen based on that comment, my favourite from their new album by far. The alternative songs come from one of the three Twilight soundtracks, so I am bias and that could be why I like some of them so much. Thanks for the effort put into the review. Once again, sorry about the sound quality, but glad that you've made some good discoveries and that over half of it seemed to be unknown (I included some Eurovision in case someone like Dandy* got it, as he may have possibly known some of the more alternative tracks). |

Not feeling my CD at all, I'll give it another listen or two but the track I like most is probably only an 8/10 So not my thing! I can't wait to see who's got my disc though, I tried to vary it so whoever got it would like at least one track

Ahh, I almost put your name down as a second guess because of the Lena tracks and some of the punk-pop tunes! That is weird how track 11 played for close to half an hour! It must have repeated itself multiple times, yet I didn't notice any break in the track to suggest that it had ended and restarted Most bizarre! Sound quality is a real problem for me, I'm very sensitive to imperfections in some songs which is so annoying! So many potentially brilliant songs have been ruined because of this I'll defintiely try and get better versions of the songs I liked and didn't already have! #9 must be one of those songs I meant to check out but forgot to as I've heard of it but never heard it, if that makes sense . Ahh, Jedward. That makes sense actually as I recognised the voices and I was one of the few who really liked Lipstick. This song is better than Lipstick actually. I have noted their latest album down as something to buy when it gets a bit cheaper. Thanks for compiling the CD, glad I got it as I made a few new discoveries! |

Oh, the CD I have is called I Don't Know What The Hell To Do So I'll Go Shopping.
From the overall sound of it, I'd hazard a guess at it being from either Dandy* or RabbitFurCoat. |

Half-listening to my CD ('POPFOBIA' how APT LOL) and the first 3 (I don't even know in what languages they are, apart from #2 ) tracks sound GOOD.
Know Track 4 Track 12. LOL. Obviously know that one too. People, remove COVERS as well, because I got titles of two tracks because of the covers that were left I'm guessing this is Freeze's CD. But I also think it could be Vulker's... It doesn't have enough coma-inducing / 80's synth / female k-pop tracks to be Tom Kay's. |
