Bruno Brookes is in the studio presenting TOTP tonight and he introduces the party with 'Shes A Little Angel' by of course ‘Little Angels’. They are an English metal or hard rock band formed in Scarborough in 1984 by Zeus and then to Mr Thrud. The founding members were Toby Jepson (vocalist), Mark Plunkett (bassist), Dave Hopper (drummer) and the brothers Bruce John and Jimmy Dickinson (guitarist and keyboardist respectively). Michael Lee joined the band to replace Hopper on 16 August 1988. 'Shes A Little Angel' is the 3rd of 12 top 75 singles between 1989 - 1994.

Next up Bruno introduces new single by boyband of the moment NKOTB. 'Tonight' was their third single from their 1990 album Step by Step. It was a big hit on both sides of the Atlantic. It first reached #7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, giving the band another hit, as, at this point, they were at their commercial peak. The song is "half slow tempo, half ska" and is mostly sung in unison by all five members of the group until the "la la..." section of the chorus. The song "discusses the relationship that binds the members of the group to their fans, since the beginning", with many references to their earlier hits in the first couplet. The "ska part" is the melody of Johann Sebastians Bach's Cantate "Sleepers awake" (BWV 140). At times, the song reminds of the Beatles' compositive style of Penny Lane and Magical Mystery Tour.

Next up Bruno introduces the first part of the chart rundown from 40-31 with new entries by Hothouse Flowers, Craig McLachlan & Check 1-2 and a riser by The Jungle Brothers.

We get another view of the new video by LFO, the Leeds DJs which win the record for the most unique song on the chart with its limited vocals and constant beat it really sounds like you are out clubbing on the dancefloor. This week its up 9 places from number 23 to 14.

After they were shown in last weeks breakers the new single from Bel Biv Devoe is up another 9 places to this weeks 20 and get a studio performance as reward of single 'One Love'. Bell Biv DeVoe, also known as BBD, is an American music group from Boston, Massachusetts, formed from members of New Edition, consisting of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe. The band is best known for their debut album, the multi-platinum selling Poison, a key work in the new jack swing movement of the 1990s that combined elements of traditional soul and R&B with hip hop. The group only had 3 top 75 hits in the UK, this being their most successful.

Next we continue with the new monthly albums feature with the top 5 albums from the month of July including:

5) Madonna - Im Breathless (Vogue Video)
4) The Beach Boys - Summer Dreams (Wouldnt It Be Nice Video)
3) The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks 1964 - 1971 (Paint It Black promo)
2) Lucianno Pavarotti - The Essentail Parvarotti (Nessun Dorma Promo)
1) Elton John - Sleeping With The Past (Healing Hands Promo)

After this we get another glimpse of the new Madonna video of 'Hanky Panky' as it rises to number 2. This is...not classic Madonna, and its interesting to find not all her releases are classics today. This is definately one I have forgotten and rightly so. But it was for the Dick Tracey film which makes sense with its 1920/30s theme.

Next up we have the countdown from 30-11 with new entries by Phil Collins, Bombalurina, Together, Duran Duran, Little Angles, New Kids On The Block and the highest new entry by Prince and risers by ZZ Top, Bananrama, Tricky Disco, Bel Biv Devoe, Dream Warriors, LFO & River City People.

We get a video clip from the highest new entry by Prince following this and his new single 'Thieves In The Temple'. ‘Thieves in the Temple’ is a song by American musician Prince from the 1990 soundtrack album, Graffiti Bridge. Added at the last minute, it was the final song recorded for the album. The track has a unique sound, starting quietly with echoed keyboards and vocals before the main section of the song booms in with a pulsating synth bass, syncopated drum machines, Middle Eastern melodies and opera-like layered vocals. Prince also samples a harmonica solo from a recording by The Chambers Brothers. The vocals are emotional, and accuse the subject of rejecting Prince and lying to him. The "temple" in the title recalls the ever-present spirituality in many of Prince's songs. The maxi single contains extended lyrics that continue the theme before diverging into more dance-oriented material. The maxi single also contains a Junior Vasquez remix called ‘Thieves in the House’, which is distinctly more dance-oriented. It also contains samples from earlier Prince songs "Eye No" and "Batdance", as well as a dub version of the house track. The music video for the song was pulled from the film, but an extended video exists which mirrors the extended remix.

Another song thats climbing the top 40 this week is 'Wash Your Face In My Sink' and Bruno points over to the performance indicating its a repeat from a show a couple of weeks before. This is the most peculiar track in the top 40 for me, Im just not sure what its meant to be like or where its meant to go. Its something different thats for sure. Theres elements of rap, hip hop, soul and raggae and probably alot I have missed.

We get a video clip of another now legendary band by mid 1990 as Duran Duran get a new entry at 23 with single 'Violence Of Summer'. there are some classic Duran elelments to this track with a hark back to their mid-80s pomp in the chorus. ‘Violence of Summer (Love's Taking Over)’ is the 21st single by Duran Duran, and the first single from the 1990 Liberty album. Having finished the 1980s with the Decade singles compilation, Duran Duran found the 1990s a new challenge, in which success would initially elude them. The lukewarm success of ‘Violence of Summer’ would shadow the band for the next few years until 1993's "Ordinary World" returned them to chart success. ‘Violence of Summer’ is a rock song, with ringing piano-like chords over a bass underpinning. Lyrically, the song contains familiar Duran Duran themes: fleeting romance in the face of sexual politics, and mars-meets-venus peculiarities between the genders. Le Bon continues to set these preoccupations into more realist scenarios, challenging himself to leave behind the opaque mysticism of the band's first five studio albums. Its also worth noting lyrically, is this track's return to the U.S.-inspired lyrics of Notorious: "going South where her mother writes", and "breaking heads in the sugar shack" (which references the cover art of Marvin Gaye's I Want You.)

Next up we have the top 10 countdown with risers into the biggest selling 10 singles in the UK by DNA & Suzanna Vega and a second week at the top for Partners In Kryme.

We finish the show with a video play of the single 'Tricky Disco' by the DJ of the same name, another techno style dance track which is quite unique for the top 40 of the time. They also released under the alias 'Greater Than One'. Greater Than One is an English electronic music band, founded by husband and wife Michael Wells and Lee Newman in 1985. They released many albums under this name, and also under the names Tricky Disco, GTO, John + Julie, Church of Extacy, Signs of Chaos, T.D.5, Salami Brothers, Killout Squad, Technohead and L.E.D.. Only a few of their singles were commercially successful. Since Newman's death on 4 August 1995 from cancer, Wells continues to release music under some of these names, and also as The Man and S.O.L.O. Their first hit single was the trance record "Pure" as GTO on Chrysalis Records, a club hit around Europe, closely followed by "Tricky Disco" as Tricky Disco on Warp Records. They used many aliases because, releasing so much material, they feared the press would not write about it all, if they knew it all came from the same band. As Newman said, "if you give them a Tricky Disco one week and then a John and Julie two weeks later and GTO a month later they’ll write about all of it". Their aliases also allowed them to release different types of material on different record labels. The single "Double Happiness" as John and Julie appeared on XL Recordings; the 12 inch single "Listen to the rhythm flow" as GTO was released on Jumping Man Records in 1991; the 1993 Tip of the Iceberg album as GTO was released on REACT, and the 1995 album Headsex as Technohead appeared on Mokum Records.

mixed bag there! from the greatness of Prince, NKOTB at their best (not much of a recommendation usually, admittedly), the whimsy of Dream warriors and the 80's retro of Duran Duran to the depths of Madonna (worst track on the generally poor soundtrack album which I bought in the States), the kiddie Turtle song and a pack of tracks I have forgotten - so I assume that means they are forgettable by definition .

Previous episode is much better, the Nana's, Blue Pearl, DNA, Soup Dragons, Paula Abdul, even MC Hammer is quite good. Soup Dragons and Prince would be my top choices.

Here's the next edition on BBC Four which they can't show because Adrian Rose (Adrian Wolfe) hasn't given permission
for his editions to be shown.

Having seen the 1991 Adrian Rose episodes what stands out is his sheer beigeness. He's not embarrassing, just ordinary and unremarkable. A shame that he seems to have a problem with BBC4 repeating the editions he co-presents.

Gary Davies is in the studio hot seat for tonights summertime 1990 edition of TOTP. And it feels summery with the kind of novelty track that is most likely played on your Spanish summer holiday. 'Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini' is a novelty song telling the story of a shy girl wearing a revealing polka dot bikini at the beach. First released by the Swedish artist Lill babs in 1956. The English version was written by Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss and first released in June 1960 by Brian Hyland, with an orchestra conducted by John Dixon. The Hyland version reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, selling a million copies in the US, and was a worldwide hit. In 1990, a version was released by Bombalurina, titled "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini", which featured Timmy Mallett, star of Wacaday, a popular UK children's television show of the time, along with two dancers, Dawn Andrews and Annie Dunkley. Andrews later married Gary Barlow of the group Take That. Mallett told the British pop magazine Smash Hits that the composer of popular theatre musicals Andrew Lloyd Webber had come up with the idea for making the single, and had asked Mallett to sing on it. The day after recording the song, Mallett took a copy of it on a tour of European clubs where he was making personal appearances, and asked the clubs' DJs to play the song, raising public awareness of the record. Lloyd Webber later admitted that he had produced the song because his wife had bet him that as a composer of musical theatre, he would not be able to make a pop song that was a big hit. The band name "Bombalurina" was taken from the name of one of the characters in Lloyd Webber's musical Cats.

Guess its good to get the awful stuff out of the way first, eh?

Well not far wrong as we get another play of one of the best songs on the chart as it hits number 2 in the chart. 'Tom's Diner' is one of my favourite songs in the chart at the time, love the early 90s shuffle beat!

We get the first part of the chart rundown next from 40-31 with new entries by Go West, a first UK chart hit for Lenny Kravitz, ToNgue N Cheek, Wet Wet Wet, UB40, Betty Boo & KLF.

We get another video clip next this time another showing of the 'Naked In The Rain' video by Blue Pearl following the studio performance on the previous show. Great slice of house thoroughly deserving of its top 5 placing.

next up we get a second studio performance this year by Craig McLachlin and his Check 1-2 band this time with second single 'Amanda'. It was their third single from the album, Craig McLachlan & Check 1-2.It was a commercial success peaking at No. 24 in Australia and No. 19 in the UK. This is a much more subtle single by Craig and I actually like it better than 'Mona'. Boy does he love girls names as names for his songs.

Next we see the return of the breakers with songs from Roxette, Jon Bon Jovi & Sting. We return with another video clip of a song that has already been shown just last week, the computer dance track Tricky Disco, very of its time and unique for a top 40 record. I actually really like it.

Yet another video next with another airing of The Soup Dragons 'Im Free' hit, still in the top 5. Next up we have the middle section of the chart rundown with new entries by Sting, Roxette & Jon Bon Jovi and theres risers by Hothouse Flowers, Craig McLachlan, Duran Duran, Bell Biv Devoe, Together, Tricky Disco, Bombelarina & LFO. So two acts - Roxette and Craig McLachlan have 2 different singles in the chart this week.

Next up we get another showing of the MC Hammer video, now surely one of the biggest hits of the summer and edging even closer to the top if the chart. I think we have seen this video 4-5 times now and this week we have seen nearly all the top 5 on video before the top 10 rundown.

We finally get a studio performance by Hothouse Flowers. Hothouse Flowers are an Irish rock group that combines traditional Irish music with influences from soul, gospel, and rock. Formed in 1985 in Dublin, they started as street performers. 'I Can See Clearly Now' is the second single from their second album 'Home' and is a cover of the Jonny Nash classic. Heres the top 10 with risers into the top 10 by new Kids On The Block, Prince and ending with the Turtle Power at number one for a 3rd week.

The show ends with a video for another individual dance DJ called Together and ‘Hardcore Uproar’ and it’s interesting pig video! A nice slice of piano house. Love these dance tunes with no vocals, they sound lush. Together were an English electronic/rave group. The band was created by Manchester Hacienda regulars Suddi Raval and Jon Donaghy along with Rohan Heath, formerly of A Guy Called Gerald and later the driving force behind the Urban Cookie Collective. The band's only hit, "Hardcore Uproar", was originally intended as a white label to play at The Haçienda in Manchester, but grew in popularity such that it climbed the UK Singles Chart. The song was written by Jon (Jonathon) Donaghy, Mark Hall and Suddi Raval though the underlying chord sequence was based on featured samples from John Carpenter's "The End", a 1983 Dutch scratching Italo disco 12" (itself a reworked version of Carpenter's theme tune to Assault on Precinct 13). "Hardcore Uproar" also included sound effects of whooping crowds recorded live at an illegal rave-party in Nelson which was, coincidentally, raided by police the same night as the recording had been made. The song's title was taken from the popular name of these Blackburn raves.

Hardcore Uproar more than many 1990 dance tracks definitely sounds like a precursor to 1991-2 rave with its samples and the reflective sounding synthy part where the beat drops out in the middle. It reminds me of Moby - Go particularly.

Soup Dragons, Blue Pearl, Sting, Roxette, DNA, Hammer would be my picks, along with the Brian Hyland Itsy Bitsy version. I'd forgotten about Lloyd-Webber doing Bombalurina - Sarah B had already had her big cheese pop hit in 1978, of course - I'll take Starship Trooper over Timmy Mallet m'self....
