BuzzJack Music Forum _ Sugababes _ Cancelled single releases

When Mutya left, new member Amelle re-recorded some of the band's tracks from fourth album Taller In More Ways. One of those tracks was Gotta Be You, which was all set to be the next single – until it was ditched in favour of ballad Follow Me Home, which charted in the lower reaches of the Top 40.

The group's last ever 'single', Freedom, was also cancelled despite heavy TV promo (it was used to promote the Nokia N8, lol) and releasing a music video. Instead, it was given away for free on Amazon as a "thank you to fans". We should think so too, after all the stress they put us under with those lineup changes.

Interesting piece from the OCC! I'm sure Gotta Be You was also lined up as the third single instead of Red Dress - I remember Mutya confirming this at one point. There's been quite a few poor decisions made when it comes to their singles... Pity!

Rumour has it that the switch of Gotta Be You for Red Dress was the straw that broke the camels back for Mutya. She to this day still hates Red Dress

Posted by: rowork 15th October 2017, 03:08 PM

I remember that interview on GMTV! laugh.gif And then they went with Follow Me Home as the fourth... such a bad decision. It lost its meaning without Mutya being involved, and I think that definitely showed in terms of public interest.

I also remember Obsession was apparently lined up as the lead single, right until they came up with Push The Button. Might explain why the remix was (rather randomly) included as part of Red Dress' release.

They really should have released Now Your Gone as the final single. It was such a better track to begin with! Plus it had the added advantage of not having being promoted at time of TIMW release as having being partly written for Tahlia.

(The creepy video didn't help)

Yeah! I remember PTB being quite a late recording. Worked out rather well for them in the end laugh.gif

THIS! sleep.gif

Would've been a nice way to showcase Amelle's contribution to what is so clearly not her album. Or they should've went with GBY - somewhat faceless, but a bop nonetheless.

Gotta be you would have been the best follow up to red dress love that song wub.gif

One Touch was apparently considered as a potential fifth single from One Touch until Siobhan left.

Crash & Burn seemed to be considered as a potential fourth single from Sweet 7 that obviously didn't happen (was featured in promos and from what I remember was also on the sticker). Then there's the mythical Hard post-Freedumb that never materialised.

Man Without Friends / Iodine was considered as a double-A side from Siobhan's Revolution In Me. They also considered releasing Medevac as a third single from Ghosts.

'Gotta Be You' is utterly heinous, I'm forever glad that never happened.

What happened to that Spiral song with William Orbit? Was that cancelled?

Yep - there's quite a few promos out there with this on it, so it seems like they were testing the waters. Whilst I don't think it would have smashed by any means, and given the disastrous era overall, I still think that Sweet 7 ended very prematurely. Considering the (relative) successes of About A Girl and Wear My Kiss, I think they could've squeezed another Top 40 single in there, and boosted the album sales ever so slightly. I always thought it was silly to release Overloaded with just the one single, too. I know the album sold well regardless (though it deserved more) and they had Walk This Way, but Good To Be Gone was received pretty well, and it could've boosted Amelle's contribution some more.

Mutya was set to release Strung Out at one point as there was a Jeremy Wheatley single mix listed on 365 Artists. I think it was ready to go as second single, but they went with Just A Little Bit instead... Might have been due to the backlash from Amelle's supposed writing credit/it originally being intended for Overloaded.

I love strung out, would have been a much better choice than Just A Little Bit. Then again if Song for Mutya wasn't a hit I don't think anything else on that album could have been.

Song 4 Mutya would have been a hit had it’s release not been so tragically mishandled and more than 35p spent on its video!!! laugh.gif

Don’t think it was ever scheduled. As best I can tell it was just an album track and nothing was every released as a single from it. Looks like the album missed the UK top 100. Shame because I absolutely love Spiral

Posted by: tommie 24th October 2017, 07:33 AM

Yeah, by all accounts Spiral was never considered as being a single. If anything I think Island would've blocked it.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 24th October 2017, 09:16 AM

William Orbit doesn’t really seem to be the single releasing type. Most of his LPs don’t have any single releases

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 25th October 2017, 09:08 PM

'Song 4 Mutya' was surely a hit?

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 25th October 2017, 09:19 PM

Kind of. I mean technically yeah it did well but I think everyone was expecting it to be so much bigger and do so much more than it did.

Posted by: rowork 25th October 2017, 09:44 PM

It was definitely a hit - just not the MASSIVE hit it deserved to be.

It received such good reviews, but the promo/videos weren't exactly impressive, and I think the release strategy was generally very poor. It should have led the album.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 25th October 2017, 09:49 PM

honestly. what a mess

Posted by: rowork 25th October 2017, 09:59 PM

Unbelievably shit. ohmy.gif

And then the 'alternative' one she clearly filmed in her house... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xpZw3C1Tb8

I tell myself this must have been for Groove Armada's tour visuals or something - surely to God that's not a proper music video.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 25th October 2017, 10:07 PM

I like to pretend that one doesn't exist. It's just beyond gash.

Her solo album was such a bungled release

True that. At the very beginning of the Real Girl campaign I remember her saying she never really intended on going solo, and that she'd be more content working behind the scenes doing production work. It was her management/label that pushed her into doing the album, and when you think of all the politics/wrongdoings within the industry, you can see why she was hesitant.

I also feel that her heart was never 100% in the solo game - she needs Keisha by her side at all times to keep her motivated and on track. tongue.gif

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 29th October 2017, 09:23 PM

I'm not sure it really helped that she stayed with the same team, so when Change came along she kind of got shunted to the side. I'd agree it sounds like she may have been encouraged down that path.

Posted by: rowork 29th October 2017, 10:00 PM

100%! As soon as they had About You Now, Mutya's campaign went to shit. At one point she even had a collab lined up with Timbaland - how did things go so wrong!? It's a decent album; just not as amazing as THE MUTYA BUENA'S album should've been.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 29th October 2017, 10:19 PM

I'm not sure it's ever the album Mutya wanted either. A lot of more Mutya style material ended up on the discard pile than there should have been.

Posted by: rowork 29th October 2017, 10:25 PM

They completely disregarded her edge. 2 The Limit, Heat and Addiction were more than album worthy.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 29th October 2017, 10:43 PM

I pray that one day I'll actually get to hear the full length version of Heat. sad.gif

The clip is still in my top 10 most played tracks of all time.

Posted by: rowork 29th October 2017, 10:49 PM

I know, right!? It's amazing! It's the exact 'urban' Mutya they should've went with, and she would've been more comfortable with her image too, I bet.

I'd like to know what happened right before they announced Real Girl as the first single. There must have been big changes behind the scenes, because Heat was actually played on her official website, which would suggest it was in the running to be a (lead) single.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 31st October 2017, 07:14 AM

Based on 2 The Limit, Addiction, Heat & Darkside it does sound like there is a substantially different version of Real Girl out there. Never understood how they picked the songs for that album, some brilliant stuff missed out

I just think Crown/Island was a mess A&R wise with Mutya's album. I get having Real Girl leading the album, but in hindsight it probably should've been a 1-2 punch.
