Hello, darlings! It's finally that time — the results for Unkown Pleasures 28.
It's been quite the eyeopener hosting this over the past month. I have increased respect for anyone that hosts anything on Buzzjack, especially those with recurring contests. It's been an absolute chore. I haven't eaten. I see Excel when I close my eyes. I never want to hear another instrumental again. This thread might just be the last thing I ever post on here — goodbye.
Anyway, thank you to everyone who voted — and I mean everyone! No deductions. Wonderful.
The results will begin tonight at 7:30pm, and the winner will be revealed by the end of the evening. I'll reveal each entry, their vote, and of course update the scoreboard as we progress through the results.
If anyone needed reminding — here is our incumbent winner, the exquisite 'One of the Girls' by Otha. Still waiting for that album~
See you tonight!

Looking forward to seeing who sent what. I'm usually useless at guessing who sent what but waiting to see if my prediction of me giving full points to Lewww or him winning comes true or not.

very interested to see who is who, and what on earth will be emerging as the winner out of that lot (can't call it).
Posted by: dandy* Sep 2 2019, 03:28 PM
What do we actually think the winning contenders are? There's been an unusual silence on this matter this time around...
Posted by: dobbo Sep 2 2019, 03:32 PM
That Sunglasses song will probably do very well I'd think.
Posted by: Rhoda Camel Sep 2 2019, 03:32 PM
I'll let you go first dandy* as I don't know if me commenting will be a giveaway on what I sent (or didn't send)!
Posted by: Jade Sep 2 2019, 03:32 PM
Hyped *.* hoping for a first ever top 20 in this but I really have no idea how this could end up doing
Posted by: Izzy Sep 2 2019, 03:34 PM
my guess would go to Sunglasses, I remember seeing some hype for that
but then perhaps an instrumental will sneak up on us, I've heard they're pretty popular this time round.
Posted by: coi Sep 2 2019, 03:38 PM
Yeah I think Sunglasses would be the obvious contender, the fact it's already appeared in the Buzzjack Multichart really says it all
Posted by: dandy* Sep 2 2019, 03:38 PM
I would guess one of:
Thylacine Black Country, New Road Liar Snapped Ankles Mall Grab HVOB
I honestly have no idea though, there's sometimes a track that screams winner from the off but I didn't feel there was quite such an obvious contender as there is usually.
Posted by: Jade Sep 2 2019, 03:38 PM
I have a really strong feeling that 'Benzolovers' will win this
Posted by: Rhoda Camel Sep 2 2019, 03:40 PM
There's a couple that I definitely agree with, dandy*. I would add SASSY 009 as a sort of dark horse picking up everyone's points sort of song.

I can honestly say that I liked my entry the most this time
Posted by: SevenSeize Sep 2 2019, 03:50 PM
results ahoy *.*
never easy to predict UP but my guess would be perhaps HVOB or Thylacine
Sunglasses *should* be winning but I figured it wouldn’t have many fans besides me? feel free to prove me wrong
Posted by: Bré Sep 2 2019, 03:59 PM
'Sunglasses' doesn't really strike me as a contender at all! It doesn't take much to get onto the Multichart bear in mind... (my current BJSC entry is on there oops, doesn't mean it's gonna be a contender though... or will it x)
I think Liar has a great chance of winning, not sure if I'm just biased because it's a fave (spoilers for my votes etc.) but it was a massive standout that I can see being a big fave for quite a few other people as well. SASSY 009 I agree should do pretty well too! Obviously 'Compromise' should win though purely for how iconic it was in the plug session. x
Excited for results I'm very curious as to whether people will be surprised by my entry or not ~~
Posted by: dandy* Sep 2 2019, 04:00 PM

That's not what the word means in that context though! It's basically a synonym for 'current', or I guess 'most recent' in this case. The definition shown there would be if you said something like 'it is incumbent upon you to vote for my song'. x

01 RISER ◼ Jake Shimabukuro ‘The Greatest Day'
QUOTE
Why ‘The Greatest Day'? I discovered the song back in May I think, it was love on first listen and I decided shortly after that it'd be my next UP entry. It reminds me of a song I sent to Nuggets four years ago. This song is mellow enough that I had no expectation of it standing out or doing particularly well, but I think it's my first time sending an instrumental and it feels nice to know I've finally done that. I'm curious to find out who does like it, if anyone does!
Votes 20 points - Elísabet ‘Heart Beats' 15 points - Thylacine ‘Versailles' 12 points - SASSY 009 ‘Are You Leaving' 10 points - 乌龟tortoise 'Sun Quan the Emperor (Guzheng & Drum Version)’ 08 points - Fiona Walden ‘Shoot Me Down' 07 points - Deja Blu 'Lake Song' 06 points - Uppermost 'Given by Nature' 05 points - Luttrell ‘Windowscene' 04 points - Faye Webster ‘She Won't Go Away' 03 points - Flunk ‘Queen of the Underground’ 02 points - Robots in Disguise ‘DIY’ 01 point - Mall Grab ‘Liverpool Street In the Rain'
Riser starting us off with the first of maybe one or two instrumentals in the competition. A sweet little song, and certainly not something I expected. 'Heart Beats' has the dubious honour of being the default leader of the scoreboard — well done Elísabet. Can she keep it up?
Songs will join the scoreboard when they have received at least one point — if they ever do.

'The Greatest Day' was an interesting choice and definitely not one I'd have pegged on Jordan! I said on plug that it kind of sounded like someone trying to play a post-rock song on a ukulele.

02 MATTIAS ◼ SASSY 009 ‘Are You Leaving'
QUOTE
Why ‘Are You Leaving'? My entries in song contests tend to mostly just be songs I'm super into at the moment, and 'Are You Leaving' is no exception. There was something about that song (and video) when I found it that really made me take notice - I'm now regularly listening to the fantastic EP, called Do you mind EP. I just really love the atmosphere and production (and the flutes *.*) and thought it would make for an interesting, unique entry! I was really pleased with the plug reaction (I think dandy* said it could be the host's entry) so I'm curious to see what happens.
Votes 20 ◼ Deja Blu 'Lake Song' - subtle dreamy trip-hop gorgeousness 15 ◼ American Football ‘Silhouettes' - a beautiful guitar-filled wall of sound 12 ◼ JeanGa & George 'Compromise' - a trip, love the piano riff 10 ◼ Sarathy Korwar ‘Bol (feat. Zia Ahmed & Aditya Prakash)’ - a mesmerizing experience 08 ◼ Liar ‘Benzolovers' - dark & cool 07 ◼ HVOB ‘Panama' - interesting sonic experience 06 ◼ 乌龟tortoise 'Sun Quan the Emperor (Guzheng & Drum Version)’ - i want to play that chinese instrument 05 ◼ Flunk ‘Queen of the Underground’ - sweet track from an old fave, love the way it builds 04 ◼ Mall Grab ‘Liverpool Street In the Rain' - solid electronic banger 03 ◼ Sophia Bel 'Time' - classy melancholia, a very pretty song 02 ◼ Toundra ‘Magreb' - 11 minute epic 01 ◼ Jake Shimabukuro ‘The Greatest Day' - such a sweet tune
'Are You Leaving' (paired with the video) feels quintessentially Unknown Pleasures. Female vocalist, dreamy synth-pop, that lo-fi video. And from Mattias? An unexpected choice.

03 BRÉ ◼ Thylacine ‘Versailles'
QUOTE
Why ‘Versailles'? I usually tend to gravitate towards sending ~quirky~ instrumentals to UP (so apologies to those who aren't big fans of having lots of instrumentals in these contests) and this is pretty much just more of the same - I was particularly drawn to this one because of the pretty visuals in the music video recorded at the palace of Versailles, I believe the actual song was recorded there as well which is a cool little unique oddity ~

04 POPCHARTFREAK ◼ 乌龟tortoise 'Sun Quan the Emperor (Guzheng & Drum Version)’
QUOTE
Why 'Sun Quan the Emperor'? I've had my song lined-up as a UP potential for a while, I thought it would suit UP rather than BJSC more. I was really impressed by the musicianship when I saw the video, amazing skills, and I've always loved the sounds of various genres of Asian music from my childhood days living in Singapore. I never set out to win, but I like putting out interesting entries to see what the reaction is to them. I hope not to get to the stage where people can predict what my entry is going to sound like, and I deliberately vary the genres and styles and ages of my entries

QUOTE
Why 'Panama'? I found 'Panama' while checking out the FM4 Chart (the chart of an Austrian radio station) some months ago. Not a me-entry, but I really like it. I thought of sending it to BJSC but I guess it fits here a bit more (can't see it doing too well though, there are many samey entries. I hope I'll manage to avoid bottom 10, not something I'd usually send but it won me over after some listens, such a great track![

Sunglasses still the only song without any points yet, maybe it won't win after all?
Why 'Bol’? So firstly the last thing anyone needed was for me to enter something that would win and force me to host again... soooooo I decided to go with a genre that has never been entered before, yes it was time for Unknown Pleasures to receive a blast of Anglo-Indian Jazz/Hip Hop/Spoken Word/Classical fusion! *.*
The album it comes from, 'More Arriving', is one of my absolute favourites this year and is a fascinating record about being part of Indian culture in the UK in these modern times of Brexit and racial blaming and scapegoating. I chose 'Bol' as I really like the way they tackle head on the dumb as f*** comments that ignorant Brits often use to racially stereotype their culture in the UK - I was a little worried that without context people may not get that the track is coming from that angle in solitude from the rest of the album but hopefully the good folk of Buzzjack understood the intent. Aside from the political angle, I just really love the way the track intersperses spoken word from poet Zia Ahmed with some frankly fabulous traditional Indian music and vocals, that final section from 5:36 onwards thrills me every time I hear it and I think it's one of those long tracks that totally justifies its length with ideas a plenty and a serious story to tell. So yeah, I thought it would be something different and interesting for a Buzzjack contest and hopefully at least a few of you enjoyed it!
Votes I enjoyed this edition on the whole, quite a varied and intriguing set of tracks I thought. I have a horrible feeling I've voted for yet another Lewwww victory but we'll see! I'm hoping that I avoid the bottom few, fingers crossed a lot of the #longsongbloc are voting in this!

Why 'Given by Nature'? I didn’t really have that many ideas to go to for this edition of UP and the first song that came into mind I ended up finding out was already sent to BJSC, so I went to a discovery I made a little over a year ago when browsing for new music. It’s one of those songs that I like but probably wouldn’t fit into BJSC at the time (if at all) so I figured now would be the perfect time to send it. Thanks to everyone who got a good discovery from it!

Snapped Ankles was one that I guessed the identity of very quickly, it has a very uniquely SevenSeize-y charm to it. Good stuff.

15 RHODA CAMEL ◼ Liar ‘Benzolovers'
QUOTE
Why 'Benzolovers'? "Benzolovers" struck me during a night of insomnia and had this instantly relatable quality. The title suggests an antidepressant-induced uncertainty that the song lives up to. The foggy vocals and piano samples over sharp, scattered percussion mimic your brain zoning out protectively during an anxiety attack. "Benzolovers" evokes this feeling of 3am unease and discomfort, yet the familiar audio and movie samples give it a distant dose of familiarity to not let the package alienate the listener.

I thought Sophia Bel sounded very Jade-y
I remember thinking it could be Jade too! Also dandy*. Sometimes in these contests I have so many fleeting thoughts as to who could've sent what
I really had no idea who was behind Deja Blu tho, I thought it was a really positively unusual entry, but Jade does make sense for it.

Leww winning again *.* (1000% behind it here of course). Did have a sneaky suspicion this would be Leww's, sounded like a Halloween bop, the very clear standout for me even in such a strong contest. Loving the Pitchfork esque write-up for it as well xx

Why 'Go Silla'? Go Silla was a song I discovered absolutely years ago on a free music site called RCRD LBL. I loved it back in the day (so much that it convinced me to get the album) and obviously it's stayed in my head up until now. I always struggle with entries for UP as it needs to be more than just 'an indie song' to do well so I delved into my archives and remembered this, and thought it would fit nicely!

I actually think 'Sunglasses' may have been more suited to BJSC honestly, just being a bit unusual is kind of the norm in UP (especially this month) so it didn't really stand out as much (although not sure it would have qualified anyway based on its result here so far). QUOTE
Why 'Liverpool in the Street'? It’s just a song I absolutely love and one that I’ve come back to repeatedly over this year ever since I found it, which isn’t very common for me at all. It’s got such an interesting vibe and it always feels like I’ve literally been transported somewhere else everytime I hear it. Plus that main melody is RIDICULOUSLY infectious, I find myself whistling it all the time even when I haven’t heard the song in a few weeks. It’s very lowkey and I’m not usually as into that sort of thing but for whatever reason this song just especially grabs my attention

RabbitFurCoat there explaining his deep and meaningful relationship with ‘Silhouettes'.
I'm surprised it's so high, as it took me a while to properly get into it. I was going to send their song 'Uncomfortably Numb' to BJSC earlier this year, but it featured Hayley Williams and the Paramore forum was created at the same time so assumed it'd be vetoed.

I was really expecting Mall Grab to be RFC for some reason! (Thought it would have fit in well with the likes of DJ Koze, Cousn and salute). In before he actually didn't like it at all.
Mall Grab and HVOB were the only two acts I'd ever heard anything by so not a bad guess.

23 IZZY ◼ 9mm Parabellum Bullet ‘ハートに火をつけて (Heart ni Hi wo Tsukete)'
QUOTE
Why ‘ハートに火をつけて (Heart ni Hi wo Tsukete)'? I found 9mm Parabellum Bullet a couple of months ago and was instantly struck by this song because of those intense and catchy riffs, some of the best I've ever heard in any J-rock. I was listening to it a lot on bullet trains in Japan and it was a really incredible experience. I was going to enter it somewhere, and after faffing around a bit with stuff I wasn't feeling for UP, I got inspired by blacksquare's suggestion to 'just send something you love' (paraphrasing), and I was certainly loving this to incredible levels over the past month. It's certainly not something I expect to do well but if it does I'll be chuffed.

24 JONNY ◼ Robots in Disguise 'DIY'
QUOTE
Why 'DIY'? I picked 'DIY' by Robots in Disguise because it's been one of my favourite songs since I really started listening to music that I had gone out and explored myself through the internet, magazines etc. rather than what was played on TV/radio. I love the message the song conveys and the harmonies within. It is long but doesn't overstay its welcome.
Votes There was one clear winner for me which did not change from my first listen to the last; I will say that many of the songs impressed me much more on subsequent listens, especially 'Shoot Me Down', 'Tailpipe' (which was slightly reminiscent of some of the The Kills' earlier stuff) and 'She Won't Go Away' (a cross between Radlands-era MJs and Jenny Lewis, but a little less inspiring).
That being said, only my number one pick would be an artist I would seek to listen to again, and I can say that I only genuinely liked my top five tracks. The others were just the best of the rest.

Congrats Frank!!! I was rooting for Liar to win but I am of course extremely happy with HVOB too as it was also in my top 3 (and as much as Fiona Walden was decent that was definitely the weak link in the top 3 so thank you for voting Chez still a good result tho WD Addy). Actually when I was relistening to it it was sort of kind of reminding me of Otha so it makes a lot of sense as a winner! Fantastic to see Mall Grab in the top 10 too (so my whole top 3 are in there) and lots more great songs in the lower end of the top 10 too. Also glad Prosumer didn't end up coming last though still deserved a lot better!
Very happy with my result here, another top 5 with a decent handful of high points including one 20, and points from a good number of unexpected people! Need to go find when I last posted my UP chart run so I can update it...

It's always been something I have wanted to know during these competitions. It's nice to know whether there is a real love for a song (much like Dandy* with 'Bol') or whether it's a strategic choice, or something someone really wants people to hear, etc.

Thylacine really soaking up points from people who very rarely vote for my songs, was this really that different to my usual entries? (Thanks John!)
Welcome! You don't always go for melody in your entries, and melody is my weak-at-the-knees achilles heel Versailles is lovely and unusual and my faves of yours tend to be those ones - or the out-there entries!

Iz comes through with the 'obviously Iz' entry just when we least suspect it. (Maybe). Really liked this one though, the last thing I expected from a Japanese entry was for it to sound like something straight out of a Frank CD Swap!
Poor brave 'Bol'.
Yes no Iz surprises there, it was the only entry I was certain of I liked it and also poor brave Bol Different is good!

I was getting tired so went to bed shortly before the finale, but congrats to Frank for winning! (first I was typing 'thank you for winning' ) I had that in my votes and everything, pleased with that.
Looks like I ended up right in the middle of the board in the end! No 20s again but thank u to anyone who supported it. That EP is one of the coolest discoveries I've had this year (although it's from 2017 I think).

Finally, big thanks to blacksquare, I super enjoyed your hosting!

fab hosting blacksquare! well done Frank! good to see my fave entry at 2! 8 is a fab position for tortoise thanks to all for the votes esp the 20 from Dobbo - I also seem to do best with instrumentals in UP - my previous best was 2, beaten off by Leww I think (who else is so utterly consistently a winner!) and I hosted - now that was stressful so I appreciate how smooth other folk make it seem
Young Mr Grace: "You've all done very well". Topical 70's reference...

I have a song ready for Nuggets as well.

Sorry to be completely oblivious about all the different competitions on here — what is the difference between Nuggets, UP, and BJSC?
Posted by: King Rollo Feb 14 2020, 09:13 PM
Nuggets is for guitar based music.
Unknown pleasures is for indie/alternative music (with or without guitars)
BJSC covers all genres.

I've found a potential for a Nuggets whenever it happens xx
Posted by: RabbitFurCoat Feb 22 2020, 10:09 AM
Think I've got something for either, would be nice to have one open soon.
Nearly 10 years since I did the first UP.

Hi guys - I won both the latest edition of Nuggets and Club Bizarre lol (the latter is the contest over in the Dance forum), I'm opening confirmations for CB very soon, after being approached about it, am happy to host Nuggets any time after that's over! Would definitely prefer not to do two concurrently, especially with taking part in Teams now too.
