BuzzJack Music Forum _ News and Politics _ potential ban on cartoon characters promoting junk food

Posted by: danG 31st May 2018, 01:25 PM

Jamie Oliver's next mission is to kill Tony the Tiger and other characters selling unhealthy food to children. of course people are outraged at him but childhood obesity is a real problem and it's about time that healthy food should be marketed to kids instead. this won't completely solve it of course but it's a step forward.

QUOTE
Cartoon or fictional characters, like Tony the Tiger and the Milky Bar Kid, should no longer be used to promote unhealthy food, a group of MPs says.
The proposed ban would also mean that film or TV characters like superheroes could no longer appear on such foods.
But characters like the Jolly Green Giant could still promote healthy food, the health select committee says.
Other recommendations include a ban on junk food adverts before the 9pm TV watershed.
The MPs' report comes after figures showed that one in 25 children aged 10 or 11 in England were now classed as "severely obese".
The committee also calls for:
supermarkets to be forced to remove sweets, chocolate and other unhealthy snacks from the ends of aisles and checkout areas
junk food price promotions, like multi-buys, should be restricted
local authorities should have the power to limit the number of fast food outlets opening in their areas
government to ban sponsorship of sports clubs, venues, youth leagues and tournaments by brands associated with unhealthy products
social media firms like Facebook should reduce children's exposure to junk food advertising
Dr Sarah Wollaston, Conservative MP and chairwoman of the committee, said: "Children are becoming obese at an earlier age and staying obese for longer.
"The consequences for these children are appalling and this can no longer be ignored."
The government has already introduced a sugar tax on fizzy drinks, but the MPs called on it to go further with "fiscal measures".
That includes extending the sugar tax to milk-based drinks such as milkshakes.

Omg I am shocked, I can kidn fo see the reasoning but also I am appaled to be losing these classic characters.

I guess if there not there then maybe kids won't pester their parents for these foods as much

Jamie Oliver just needs to f*** off.

And if they are going to go as far as potentially banning multi-buys etc. then the least they could do is make gyms and swimming pools more affordable for the every day person.

Cartoons & fictitious characters would be banned, so real people are okay. My dream to be the new face of Frosties is still possible.

I suspect having a government that didnt encourage low-income families eat junk food out of necessity would be more effective. That said, yes kids eat junk food, they are way-more unhealthy than previous generations and heading for an early grave and half a lifetime of miserable health.

Responsible parents make sure they eat healthily and get exercise. They have the power to say "no". Kids love sugary fatty food though, so cutting off cartoon characters wont make a blind bit of difference to that general love of all things crap and sugary (I was a kid once too, loved sweets, chocs etc)

Or better still, drop the junk food and just buy them the bloody toy or a comic instead.

Unfortunately kids will still eat junk food, even if they can't get it at home - it just tastes so much better than healthy food. wink.gif

Jamie Oliver needs to get in the sea. Interfering c**t needs to stop forcing his ideals on everyone and open his eyes to reality. Not everyone can afford smashed avo for breakfast or has the time to sit and make his shit from scratch. Real people are time poor coz they having to work 2 jobs to survive
