Predictions?
The bias in this is disgusting. Clearly a staged poll to satisfy Shapne's demands.
26 (24) 4.9 Show You The Way To Go
25 (13) 5.2 Coconut
24 (26) 5.4 Love's On Every Corner
In bottom place we have the first single from Dannii's second album. Get Into You. A cover fo a Jackson 5 song, it made the top 30 in the UK btu missed the top 100 in Australia.
Coconut was originally intended for the 1995 album that remained unreleased until a short time ago. A more unhinged version appeared on Girl and became a single, hitting #62 in Aus.
Love's On Every Corner is another Get Into You single and faired slightly poorer than SYTWTG, only going to #44 in the UK. It was never released in Australia.
I WILL REPORT YOU TO THE PROPER AUTHORITIES FOR YOUR OBVIOUS DANNII HATE
Wow 'Coconut' has had a big drop since the last rate, not surprising really as it is very forgettable. 'Show You The Way To Go' & 'Love's On Every Corner' are both pretty bad and incredibly dated like most of her early 90's stuff.
Who in the hell thought that it was a good idea to have those as the lead singles, even back then I doubt they were considered strong enough, and looking at their chart performances, I was right. 'This Is It' was the only decent song from that era. I predict 'Get Into You' will be one of the next to drop out here.
23 (18) 5.8 He's The Greatest Dancer
22 (20) 6.1 I Don't Wanna Take This Pain
21 (23) 6.5 Baby Love
Two singles from Dannii's debut album drop out.
I Don't Wanna Take This Pain was the only single from that album not to be on her Greatest Hits CD, hitting #40 in the UK and 92 in Uastralia it's not hard to see why.
Baby Love was orginally one of my singles but Danni covered it and made it mor epoppy. Hitting 14 in the UK and 26 in Aus, it fared better than the original.
He's The Greatets Dancer comes from Club Disco and was intended to be the Children In Need Single, mainly down to Dannii signing on for Strictly, but all that changed when
she got the job on X-factor so she was replaced with Emma Bunton. The single didn't chart here but went top 40 in Australia.
Huh actually forgot that 'I Don't Wanna Take This Pain' was there, otherwise I would have predicted that to drop next, just goes to show how forgettable it is, definitely the weakest single from her debut album. 'Baby Love' is fine enough piece of early 90's pop fluff that has aged rather badly now and not something I go back to when listening to Hits & Beyond.
I don't mind 'He's The Greatest Dancer', a really good cover in my opinion and totally works as a dance song, also I don't think it was actually released in the UK, got cancelled when it was replaced as the Children In Need single, and therefore only released in Australia.
Aw, I'm quite liking 'Show You the Way to Go' on first listen. The initial production quickly grabbed my attention but I was anticipating not to like it when the vocal came in, thinking there must be a reason it's in last place, but I enjoyed it all!
The Girl version of 'Coconut' is so batshit crazy, I actually love it!!
All the others are forgettable. Didn't know what you meant about you singing 'Baby Love' originally at first!
20 (16) 6.6 $ucce$$
Dannii's second single from her debut album is the first in the top 20 in this countdown. Just missing out on the top 10 in the UK, it was kept out by sister Kylie.
It got to #28 in Australia. The song has a bit of an American feel to it and Dannii even has a rap-sort of moment in it.
19 (14) 6.7 Love & Kisses
And now to the song that kicked it all off for Dannii. Her debut single was released back in 1991.
A pretty decent hit, it went top 5 in Australia, getting to #4, while it was a top 10 in the UK, reaching #8. It was actually her only
top 10 in her native Australia. It features the iconic line "We ain't at McDonald's baby, what's your beef?"
I like '$ucce$$'! A lot moreso than 'Love and Kisses'.
I've grown to really like Success, one of her better pre Girl songs.
Surprised that 'Success' is higher than 'Love And Kisses', find the latter far more memorable, but both very much dated and both have aged quite badly, although both are still fun bops and very different to the sound she would later become more successful with.
'Jump To The Beat', 'Get Into You', or maybe 'I Can't Sleep At Night' may drop next.
18 (21) 6.9 I Can't Sleep At Night
Another one of the many Club Disco songs. This was randomly made a single in 2007 but failed to chart anywhere. One of the weaker songs
form that era it's no wonder really. Nice video though.
17 (17) 6.9 This Is The Way
One of her early singles, and an overlooked one as it missed being on Hits & Beyond. This Get Into You song got to 27 in the UK and
45 in Australia, faring better than the first two singles from the album but not as well as This Is It.
'This Is The Way' is a real gem out of her early discography, particularly the extended version.
16 (19) 7.14 Jump To The Beat
The last of the singles from Love & Kisses to appear here.
Originally a big hit for Stacy Lattisaw, Dannii covered it and it became a slightly big hit too.
It missed the top 40 in Australia peaking at 48 but it became a top 10 for her in the UK, hitting #8.
The song also appears to be a favourite of Kylie if this clip suggests anything
15 (22) 7.18 Get Into You
The 5th and final single from the album of the same name, Get Into You had more of a rockier edge to it
compared to other songs from the album and indeed her whole career. It got to 79 in Australia but made the top 40 in the
UK, peaking at 36. The song fared much better in this rate than the previous which is good cause I love this song.
Couple more comments please so I can carry on.
I loved the trance remixes of I Can't Sleep At Night but the original was so dull it's no wonder it flopped. Plus they took ages to release it
Wasn't 'I Can't Sleep At Night' a cancelled single in the end? I always thought they were going to release it in late 2005 and had a video, it was on the release schedule and then came 'Perfection' and that was that.
I've appreciated 'Get Into You' a fair bit more recently.
Starting to recognise some of the titles as we head into the Top 20. Most of them I'm kinda impartial on (they're nice but not anything I'd return to) although 'This is the Way' is a bit of a bop.
Since Grant has sadly left the site, I've counted up the votes and will continue the countdown on his behalf.
Any hopes or predictions?
14 (12) 7.23 Perfection
Based on 'Turn Me Upside Down' by The Soul Seekerz (which itself samples Vicki Sue Robinson's 'Turn the Beat Around'), 'Perfection' was released as the second single from Club Disco. It narrowly missed out on becoming Dannii's 10th Top 10 single in the UK, making its chart debut and peak at #11. In Australia, it was the highest peaking single from the album, charting at #13.
Perfection was far from Perfection for me. I always found this to be bland and forgettable.
13 (**) 7.27 Holding On
The most recent of Dannii tracks to appear on the countdown, 'Holding On' was released this August, over a year after it made its premiere when Dannii appeared as a guest act on Culture Club's Australian Tour. 'Holding On' also features vocals from Australian X Factor finalist Jason Heerah.
12 (15) 7.27 Everlasting Night
Appearing higher than 'Holding On' due to the 11 that it was given, 'Everlasting Night' was Dannii's last single to be released in the 90s. It comes from writing sessions that took place in 1995 for what would have been Dannii's then-third album, however a contract disagreement with Mushroom Records saw the two part ways and the album didn't materialise (not until the demos were released on the album The 1995 Sessions in 2009). It was the theme to 1999's Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and has remained a pride classic since.
11 (09) 7.73 Touch Me Like That
A collaboration with Jason Nevins, 'Touch Me Like That' was the final single from 2007's Club Disco. The song samples the melody of 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)', cited as one of Dannii's favourite disco songs. Peaking at #48, the song marked Dannii's last appearance on the UK Singles Chart and was excluded from the Australian charts for including too many remixes on the CD.
10 (08) 7.82 So Under Pressure
Lead single to her compilation The Hits & Beyond and later included on Club Disco, 'So Under Pressure' was Dannii's last Top 20 hit in both Australia and the UK. Despite its upbeat production, the song's lyrics have been said to describe Dannii's feelings surrounding sister Kylie's cancer diagnosis and treatment.
#10 for So Under Pressure? That's what I call underrated.
Such a fantastic song!
'So Under Pressure' is one of my favourites too. Would have preferred to see it higher but I'm happy it's Top 10.
09 (10) 7.95 Everything I Wanted
Follow-up to 'All I Wanna Do', 'Everything I Wanted' didn't have quite the same chart success on the official UK chart, peaking at #15, but was a hit with the clubs and earned her a second (and consecutive) number one on the UK Upfront Club chart. The music video wasn't filmed by a production team, instead Dannii was recorded by her then-boyfriend Steve Shaw with a handheld camera whilst they travelled through Las Vegas.
Underrated song, my favourite of that era.
I wish I would voted now, I would have made Perfection second in my rate being Who Do You Love Now (Stringer). Perfection has excellent orchestral disco house production imo!
First time hearing 'Everything I Wanted' - probably not going to join my selection of Dannii favourites but it's still pretty good.
08 (06) 8.09 I Begin to Wonder
May come as a surprise that the first single from Neon Nights to leave is 'I Begin to Wonder', no thanks to a -1 it received! The song was originally performed by producer Jean-Claude Ades who helped Dannii rearrange the production and add additional lyrics. Upon release, 'I Begin to Wonder' became Dannii's best peaking single in the UK, taking the runners-up spot after falling 10k behind Christina Aguilera's 'Beautiful'. It generally remains one of her most loved by fans and critics, with the Dead or Alive mash-up being well-received too.
Shame that poster!!
I do think its overrated, especially since I heard the JCA original version a year before her release and I definitely prefer their version. Still a -1 is unacceptable
Scrap this.
That is Regina's fault. Damn him.
'I Begin to Wonder' is another favourite of mine. I think I remember seeing the video on TV as a kid so there's a bit of nostalgia there, although I've got to say now I find Dannii's hair extensions absolutely atrocious! You can see her natural bob underneath.
'I Begin To Wonder' was the song that made me sit up and take notice of Dannii, to this day it remains my absolute favourite of hers.
(Mind you, I was about 14 when that came out and still less than a year into to my proper Kylie mega-fandom).
07 (07) 8.14 Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling
Final song released from Neon Nights, 'Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling' in fact has Madonna credited as a co-song writer. Madonna's crediting led to a mash-up of both this song and her own hit 'Into the Groove' being officially issued, having been inspired by many of the bootleg recordings that had been made in the UK. 'Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling' was another UK Top 5 for Dannii - only her fourth to do so.
It's easy to listen and it's one of my favourites from her.
The original is fine, but so pales in comparison to the majestic 'Groove' version.
06 (01) 8.5 This Is It
The only song from her pre-'All I Wanna Do' career to appear in the Top 10, 'This Is It' takes a bit of a tumble from the #1 position it reached back in the countdown a few year back. Still a well regarded song, it is in fact a cover of a 1976 disco song originally performed by Melba Moore, which reached #9 in the UK. The song was a hit for Dannii too, reaching #10 in the UK and spending 20 weeks in the Australian charts, despite its peak of #13.
05 (04) 8.59 Disremembrance
'Disremembrance' was Dannii's last charting song of the 90s in the UK, just missing out on a spot on the Top 20. Despite its peak, it has gone on to be a big fan favourite and one of Dannii's most critically lauded, with many complementing the mix of trance beats and orchestral strings. The https://open.spotify.com/album/3WnGyG68rg3vMTgemZblQT is such a treat if you're a fan of the song already.
My absolute favourite by her, it's a pleasure to listen to. The production is fantastic, and I also enjoy the ethereal lyrics
04 (11) 9 Put the Needle On It
Taking a significant jump from where it placed in the countdown a few years back, 'Put the Needle On It' was the lead single from Neon Nights. It received great praise from critics who applauded its 80s-inspired disco mixed with a contemporary edge, even compared to some of Madonna's work. It was a chart success in more places around the world than Dannii had previously received, helped by her feature on the previous years' 'Who Do You Love Now?', including Top 10 in the UK and #11 in Australia, the same peak as 'All I Wanna Do'.
This has grown to be one of my favourite Dannii singles. Feels like it could slot quite nicely onto Kylie's Body Language - wonder if Kylie took a bit of inspiration from Dannii?
Still love it to this day. Its this kind of dance-pop that I miss.
03 (05) 9.41 All I Wanna Do
'All I Wanna Do' marked a reinvention for Dannii, adopting a sexier and blonde image to match a more dance-inspired sound. Dannii joined forces with Brian Higgins, who would go on to co-write Cher's 'Believe' and found the Xenomania production group who created a string of hits for Girls Aloud, and together they gave Dannii her highest peaking single in the UK at the time. The song remains Dannii's best selling in the UK and set the mold for future releases.
02 (03) 9.45 Who Do You Love Now?
Arguably the Dannii song the most amount of people would recognise, 'Who Do You Love Now?' extends on the dancier sounds of her Girl album and cemented her position in the club world. The song is produced by Dutch DJs Gaston Steenskist and René ter Horst under the alias Riva; a duo that also had chart success with 'Give It Up' as The Good Boys (UK #5 in 1993) and 'I Wanna Be U' as Chocolate Puma (UK #6 earlier in 2001). It gave Dannii her biggest worldwide hit, charting in many European countries that she hadn't before, including Top 3 in the UK.
01 (02) 9.55 You Won't Forget About Me
We reach our winner! Originally an instrumental titled 'Flower Power' that had been a hit in Ibiza, Dannii was approached by All Around the World Records to write and perform lyrics. After being won over by the track, Dannii agreed to supply lyrics that she had been working on to create 'You Won't Forget About Me', a song that refers to a summer romance. The song marked Dannii's last appearance in the UK Top 10 but clearly she went out on a high.
All I Wanna Do - my first introduction to Dannii, as it was played regularly on MTV Europe at the time. Still a massive song with a great video. Also who had internet that fast back then? Haha
Who Do You Love Now - radio stations here seemed to go with the instrumental for a while, which pissed me off since I wanted to finally hear Dannii on portuguese radio. This also got a lot of support from MTV Europe and dare I say it, its the best she's ever looked in a video, so hot! Definitely her breakthrough hit in many euro countries
You Wont Forget About Me - a very good piece of house music but a tad overrated imo, as I feel the songs below it are a lot better. I also remember a lot of people back then were pinning this as her long deserving first #1 hit, but alas, it completely underperformed and was beaten to the top by Ja Rule of all people with a song nobody remembers today.
I think YWFAM is a decent winner, although these results have been overall painful.
'You Won't Forget About Me' and 'Who Do You Love Now?' are the two songs I am most familiar with so I'm pleased they made the Top 2, although I've got to say this countdown has really allowed me to get into and really love a lot of her others. 'Put the Needle On It', 'All I Wanna Do', 'Disremembrance', 'So Under Pressure', 'Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling' are all great, plus I'm liking her earlier music like 'This Is It' and 'Baby Love'. May have to invest in a Dannii compilation!
