One of the biggest criticisms of the Smile era was how the singles campaign has been a bit of a mess, so how would you have handled the singles campaign.

For me I'd have gone;

Never Really Over (with some promo) > Harleys in Hawaii (full singles push) > Daisies (Or Only Love) > Album > Cry About it Later

I’m not sure which songs were completed last summer or which were made this year — but the fact she had Cry About it Later ready to go and chose Small Talk is unforgivable.

I’d have went for Never Really Over as the (lead) when Daisies was released so basically release that around a year or so later. NRO being released nearer to album release would mean she’d have been in a better position to what she ended up in.

Follow that up with Not the end of the world with the album release. Then release teary eyes and only love post album.

NRO is kinda like the lead but in a way it’s like Pinks Try this era with Feel Good Time and American Life era by Madonna with Die Another Die they were released first but they’re not lead.

Yes yes yes, that is just a complete WTactualF?!

1. Never Really Over
2. Tucked
3. Cry About It Later (late 2019/early 2020)
4. Not the End of the World (--- album release ---)
5. Only Love

WHAT a campaign that would have been! I won't ever understand why/how they just sat on 'Cry About It Later'.

Would 'Tucked' really work as a single? I LOVE it and I've become quite hooked on it but I'm not sure it particularly screams success as a single, any more than Smile did.

Just about the whole album would’ve done better as a single than the title track. Maybe resilient and what makes a woman are no gos but everything else I’d say stood a better chance than Smile.

Tucked is the closest sounding song to Teenage Dream era and has an ear worm of a chorus. It’s just a bit dated. But it’s definitely classic Katy.

Exactly! After NRO it would have been a nice reminder of what people loved about her, it has the essence of Katy! And if it didn't quite smash, they'd have had 'Cry About It Later' as the ace up their sleeve.

Either way, nothing could have derailed the campaign/her career like 'Small Talk' did.

tucked would have been a great way to keep the casuals interested - it is miles ahead of smile + if it had the same radio support as smile is getting, it could genuinely be a hit. the chorus + hook is insane, it doesn’t leave you - that’s what she needed!

I'd love to think Tucked could do well, it's crept up on me so much in the past week, I'm just not sure that's what the GP is into anymore. Admittedly, I'm not particularly what it is they're into anymore laugh.gif

In hindsight I think she should've released the album closely after NRO with no other singles released before. I honestly don't think any of the other songs would've done anything no matter what was chosen.

Never really over and daisies are the best two songs on the album which were released. Cry about it later would be a good choice but none of the material is as strong as her earlier stuff.

Why on earth she sat on a song called Not The End of the World doing a global pandemic...the promo would've done itself!

People should stop putting all the blame on Small Talk. It is a fantastic pop song. wub.gif
