BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ The Top 40 w/o Non-Singles

Posted by: jafetsigfinns Mar 27 2017, 09:21 AM

Hey guys. I decided to see what the top 40 would look in the past weeks without album tracks non-singles. Going over which tracks hurt the most from this sudden album track invasion and what would have happened in a "perfect" chart world. The first week I'll be covering is the week ending March 09, 2017 where we got a taste of what was to come when Stormzy released his debut album Gang Signs & Prayer.

Code:
(Real Position) New Position / Last Week / Weeks / Artist & Song

Week ending March 09, 2017 (omitting album tracks from Stormzy)
(01) 01 01 08 ED SHEERAN Shape of You

(45) 40 47 04 IMAGINE DRAGONS Believer

I wasn't sure what to do about No. 11 and No. 32, but decided to keep them since 'How Would You Feel (Paean)' was a promotional single and 'Shut Up' gained huge popularity on its own as a stand-alone track during christmas 2015.

Having omitted 5 Stormzy album tracks a couple of songs get higher peaks this week than they were supposed to, and a total of THREE songs get Top 40 status which they otherwise would not have ('Love' at No. 37, 'Swalla' at No. 38 and 'Believer' at No. 40).

I decided to omit 'Galway Girl' until next week because it wasn't formally released as a single until March 17, 2017 according to wikipedia, so that will be its' official impact date. Until then it's just another album track.

So, after omitting 13 Ed Sheeran songs and 1 Stormzy song, the Top 40 looks like this. Lorde manages to peak Top 20 with 'Green Light' and Little Mix debut at No. 26 rather than a lousy second-to-last in the Top 40.

problem is Galway Girl for instance, when/if is totally arbitrary

So instead of pretty much no action outside of Steps just about scraping into the Top 40 we get some very interesting movements and debuts. While we still have 4 Ed Sheeran songs in the Top 10 we also get Martin Jensen moving into the Top 10, Zedd & Alessia move into the Top 40 and Bruno and Julia hold hands while they climb side to side into No. 23 and No. 24 (sometimes referred as the Play Zone).

New entries outside of Steps' return include Martin Solveig at No. 35, Louisa Johnson at No. 36, Nicki Minaj at No. 37 and Future at No. 40.

This is the worst one yet as we actually have to dig all the way down to No. 72 to find a true Top 40 entry, meaning I had to cut a total of 32 Ed Sheeran and Drake tracks to get something resembling a Top 40 chart. Here we still have new entries by Drake and Clean Bandit in the Top 10, but another new entry comes from Ariana Grande and John Legend at No. 40. A couple of songs climb but the fact that every song below No. 21 didn't make the Top 40 in real time makes me sad by the state of the charts today.

Good to see Martin Solveig and Future scrapping the non-album tracks top 40 the past two weeks, hoping they can make it officially soon now the Drake tracks are tumbling.

Posted by: SKOB Mar 27 2017, 10:46 AM

This is interesting, however it seems that the songs that were "robbed" are pretty much the same songs that have been hovering around for ages (from Closer to I Would Like)

Hey guys. I decided to see what the top 40 would look in the past weeks without album tracks.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say 'including only official singles', since all of Ed's songs are in his album... teresa.gif

Posted by: jafetsigfinns Mar 27 2017, 12:22 PM

Haha yeah official singles would probably be a better choice of words. But I did also include promotional singles there.

Posted by: GTH Mar 27 2017, 08:26 PM

Thanks for doing this. Interesting to see the difference. Quite a few tracks so far in this month alone that have missed out top 40 positions due to the abundance of non-single album tracks influencing the charts at the moment.

I really hope Best Behaviour does go top 40 officially, or else I fear we may never hear that debut album of hers.

Agreed, and I really do think Best Behaviour is such a bop it would be a shame for it to miss out on the Top 40! sad.gif
