How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. The desktop top 50 may update before anything else so is always worth checking if the website is not up to date. However recently it has been known to not to do (even when the website has), so do check all sources. Also note that the Spotify Website will update before external websites (Kworb, LivePopBars). Occasionally there will be a delay in the Spotify chart updating which could even take days.

How often does the chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although this is not 100% guaranteed. Sometimes the top 200 on the website will update but without the top 50 on the app updating, and sometimes there will be no update at all.

How many plays on Spotify equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. (Spotify will let you play a song on repeat 600 times if you really want to).

The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread. For information on what songs are currently on ACR and what songs will be moving to ACR, refer to this thread.

How much does Spotify contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole, although the #1 still can be decided by who has better paid-for sales. Spotify counts for a good chunk of streaming sales (although it appears to be losing some market share as Apple Music and Amazon Music gain in popularity), so doing well on Spotify is essential for doing well in the chart.

Why is my fave not doing well on Spotify?

Is it being promoted on one of Spotify's major curated playlists? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists, with over a million followers. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist.

Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped artists/releases such as Justin Bieber/Ed Sheeran/Drake who will of course enter straight at the top.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

To add to the question at the end of the previous thread, certainly seems that during lockdown streaming numbers seem to upturn when the weather does. I guess if people are outside more they'll have headphones/speakers whereas if inside more TV will be watched and games played?

Gaga's slayage is unreal! To think this queen was written off back in 2016 - maybe even as early as 2014! 'Rain On Me' is looking to be a stable and lasting hit rather than a SL-style enter and then drop 10 spots. Her album sales are also higher than anyone would have expected! Are we getting a second wave of Gaga domination? I hope this song isn't a fluke and she can secure another top 10 (or big top 20) single after this. I need to properly listen to the album but 'Alice' sounds amazing and far better than anything I heard from her Joanne era.

Googling the Chris Brown song is bringing up results about a dance 'challenge' for it so yeah ~ I wonder if it is being heavily promoted on Apple playlists as well, it has always been significantly higher there than on Spotify (where it is only #94 currently).

Amazing to see CG at #9. 'This Is America' is not my cup of tea musically but it is almost the perfect song to reflect what's going on at the moment! The video is one of the best of the past few years also! I'm shocked and disappointed 'Black' isn't top 50. Such an important message conveyed flawlessly.

Dave isn't too much lower than he was after his BRITs performance, #59 is still a pretty great impact - like I said when it did return following the BRITs, it was never a huge streaming hit to begin with and I don't think anything will ever make it one, it just doesn't seem like the sort of song many people would keep in high rotation for long periods of time. Just nice to see it getting another little resurgence and hopefully in the long run it'll turn out to be a more remembered song than its limited commercial success indicates.

Brilliant to see 'This Is America' managing to make the top 10 of course and even moreso for 'Alright' to impact the top 40, what a song They're at #2 (!) and #11 respectively in the US.

Surprised that 2Pac's 'Changes' doesn't seem to have been one of the songs pushed on blackout related playlists! It is in the top 30 on iTunes alongside Dave though.

the thing about being #1 on Hot Hits is that if it's a song people don't want to listen to, it's easy enough to just start the playlist at #2.
but if you're the 2nd or 3rd track in a list of actual popular songs you'll get quite a few streams from people just listening to the playlist and who either can't skip it on time or aren't bothered with having it on even if it's not the song they'd have chosen.
so Black going that high is fairly impressive still, especially considering it wasn't on the America-centric playlist which was responsible for those other entries.

Posthumous releases aren't a new thing. Elvis Presley, Amy Winehouse, Viola Beach, Michael Jackson, Aaliyah, 2Pac, Notorious B.I.G. etc - these have all had posthumous releases that were successful in the past. Re-workings, remixes, or never heard before tracks, samplings, etc.

here in Scandinavia there's a big controversy about Tidal right now, not sure if people are talking about it outside Scandinavia
but Tidal is under investigation in Norway for making up fake streams... and not a few streams, millions of streams
think I read today in the paper that in particular they inflated the streams x Beyonce - Lemonade

I've never been happier to see D-Block Europe having the highest new song on Apple Music... (what a state though).

Over in the US 6ix9ine only has the second highest new song on Apple Music as well, being outdone by a new Lil Baby track (Lil Baby really moves on quickly, it's only been about a month since he last released a batch of new songs as a deluxe version of his latest album lol).

'TROLLZ' was released at a completely different time of the day to 'GOOBA' so it's not entirely a fair comparison but looking back at last month's Spotify thread 'GOOBA' was #41 on Apple after 17 hours, 'TROLLZ' is at #40 after 15 hours so pretty similar so far. For what it's worth the online reaction to the actual song seems to be much more negative this time around (from what I've seen).

I dare say his YouTube views have held up better for this song because of people thirsting over Nicki more than anything else lol ~ (he's also alleged to get more views from bots than most artists do :') but a big part of his YT success is that he has a big fanbase in Latin America which is a giant market for YouTube).

It is surprising that 'TROLLZ' has done so much worse than 'GOOBA' on Spotify considering it got off to a similar start on Apple Music though - but nonetheless, you very much love to see it. Hopefully means he'll be missing the top 10 this time and avoiding #1 in the US again. (On US Spotify it's only 114k ahead of the new remix of 'ROCKSTAR', nevermind the original still being #1 - going to take some monstrous sales to overcome that).

The Kid LAROI is a name I have seen a fair bit of hype around so felt like he was due to have a mainstream hit at some point, a Juice WRLD collab is certainly one way to make that happen!

Pretty sure Ella Henderson's last single did not chart on Spotify at all so making any impact on the top 200 isn't really bad for her tbh.

I would say it's guaranteed, there's a decent buzz about it and lots of songs above it will go on ACR. Plus it's still rising in support on most platforms.

Nice to see '21' entering (just had a music video release so I am guessing that is why), one of the best of the songs I've heard from Polo G's album. Would be cool to see it being another top 100 hit for him.

That Digga D/Sav'o/Ty song is from 2017, a bit odd that it's randomly charting now (unless it is a TikTok thing again lol).

Also I guess we're really giving Jason Derulo another potentially big hit in 2020 *_* not really feeling this song, hopefully it might be a grower ~

The Natalie Taylor song may possibly do similarly to Sam Fischer and JP Saxe (both of which spent a while in the low top 100 before picking up properly), Spotify tends to be slower to pick up the more 'adult contemporary' TikTok songs. (Also comparing it to those as it's a similarly tedious song xx)

Nothing out today again,
so that someone as indie and left field as Phoebe Bridgers can be track #3 on NMF with a random album track, she's my favourite artist right now
and this is her best song ever (I know the end) so not complaining
on NMF, NSG are #1 and Swarmz, Poundz & Dappy are #2
both songs also added to HH but quite low

on Apple Music, Deruylo up to #15 already, climbing like a future #1...
