Thank you to everyone who took part, I hope that you enjoyed it. We will now take a look at what the answers were and see how everyone has done.

In Round 1 you were looking for the connections; the connection that all four clues shared.

WORLD MUSIC: The first set of music videos were songs with a title that consisted entirely of the name of a country*, “Papua New Guinea” is one of my favourite songs of the 1990s and lends itself so well to this kind of a round by being somewhat known but not easy to name - the band name also has a capital city in it which could lend itself to another connection but nobody fell for that or at least nobody guessed after just 1 clue. Anyway, it made #22 in the summer of 1992 and was the first of the four UK Top 40 hit clues here which were:

1. The Future Sound of London “Papua New Guinea
2. Athlete “El Salvador
3. The Manic Street Preachers “Australia
4. Sash! “Ecuador

*and by country we mean a sovereign state that's a member of the UN in it's own right obvs

Congratulations to Dandy*, Mangø, Campbell, jimwatts, paulgilb, and chrissmith276, who got this correct after just 2 clues and all score 3 points.
All those scoring correct answers and points scored as follows:

BIG BEATS ARE THE BEST: Yes, this one was a little unfair to anyone born after about 1998 - but the bands in each clue were all bands that consisted of, or were different aliases of NORMAN COOK. He still (I believe) holds the Guinness World Record for the most Top 40 hits under different names and these are just four of them from the 1990s. Fatboy Slim and Freak Power are the best known, but Pizzaman and The Mighty Dub Katz all had at least 1 Top 40 single in the 90s also.

The clues were:
1. Mighty Dub Katz
2. Pizzaman
3. Freak Power
4. Fatboy Slim

I DON'T WANT TO SEE A GHOST: Now there's a Christmas present idea for Dandy*^^ The meme/notoriety of this song's lyrics continue to this day, so I simply had to include this somewhere. It either baffled or amused because the clues were all references to lyrics (particularly the infamous verse, you know the one I'm talking about) to “Life” by Des'ree. It became the singers biggest hit in 1998 and became the springboard for “You Gotta Be” finally making the Top 10 a year later; “Life” made it to #8 in summer 1998 and actually had a fairly impressive chart run for the time with 10 weeks in the Top 30.

The lyrics in full: I don't want to see a ghost,
It's a sight that I fear most
I'd rather have a piece of toast
And watch the evening news

I thought Q2 was going to be Norman Cook acts from the first clue, but hadn't got my head around the whole thing until after the second clue. That 'Life' one is brilliant, especially the "sight that I fear most" clue, annoyed that I didn't get it from that!

ALL GREEK TO ME: So in the original series of Only Connect they used to use Greek letters to represent each clue, however this was changed as it was deemed 'too pretencious'. ohmy.gif I think the Greek alphabet got a bit of an unfair deal there, and we now use it to name Hurricanes and Storms so I thought I'd bring its relevance back by using the full spelling of each letter to represent parts of artists/bands. The first clue was particularly mean because it could have been the phonetic alphabet, that was very sneaky of me!

The artists/bands were:
ALPHAbeat
SIGMA
DELTA Goodrem
The Justified Ancients of MU MU

and those getting it all right:

Yeah, exactly the same with me! In fact it was the same with first question, I should have just trusted my instincts and submitted my guess straightaway for that extra point...

SYNESTHESIA: This was quite a difficult set of picture clues to get as it almost became a bit of an album cover quiz in itself first. They were though all ALBUMS WITH A COLOUR IN THE TITLE. The four albums we (kind of) saw were:

1. BLUE Lines by Massive Attack
2. The RED SHOES by Kate Bush
3. PINK Friday by Nicki Minaj
4. PURPLE Rain by Prince

SOMETIME AROUND MIDNIGHT: The deadline of this quiz (roughly). Originally I was going to make this connection about time with “12:51” by the Strokes and “3AM Eternal” by the KLF as some of the clues, but I decided that might have been too hard so instead we got four Top 40 hits with MIDNIGHT in the title. These were:

1 Un-Cut “MIDNIGHT”
2 The Airborne Toxic Event “Sometime Around MIDNIGHT”
3 Miley Cyrus “MIDNIGHT Sky”
4 ABBA “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (A Man After MIDNIGHT)”

Those staying up all night and getting it all right:

In Round 2 you were looking for the 4th in a sequence; each set of clues are still connected but were now a sequence and we wanted to know 'what comes fourth'.

BOOM BOOM BOOM (BOOM): Yes, this one was stolen from Only Connect so if you've watched the show as much as I have then you'd get this one from the first clue- and some of you did! Mainly thanks to me putting one of the Missing Vowels answers as this, probably should have gone with 'VNGBYS'.. The connection was UK number 1 singles with increasing numbers of 'Boom' in the title. So we had:

Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince “BOOM! Shake The Room” from 1993
The Black Eyed Peas “BOOM BOOM Pow” from 2009
The Outhere Brothers “BOOM BOOM BOOM” from 1995
and finally we wanted to see Vengaboys “BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM!!” from 1999 of course (or 1998 if you're counting when it was officially first recorded/released).

Congratulations to paulgilb, Dandy*, Ansel and Suedehead2, who got this correct after just 1 clue and score all 5 points. Boom!
All the correct answers and points scored as follows:

paulgilb (5)
Dandy* (5)
Ansel (5)

THE ONLY CHART THAT COUNTS: Yes it's consecutive R1 Chart Show hosts, and for this sequence we're going back a bit here - that's because chart show hosting duties yo-yo'd between Bruno Brookes and Mark Goodier for the best part of 16 years and between them they covered the 1990s. So we were looking for in the final clue which would have been Mark Goodier (1995-2002) who took over from Bruno for the final time (after taking over from him for the first time between September 1990 and March 1992) in April 1995. Mark taking over seemed to mark the period when the chart started to change with chart climbers consigned to history and singles debuting at their peak position. Of course Brookes' most infamous moment includes playing Rage Against The Machine's “Killing In The Name” completely uncensored at 5 on a Sunday afternoon, and about a year later doing the same with Nine Inch Nails' “Closer” laugh.gif

PLANET SOUND: So this was quite a nice one I thought, the connection for this sequence was planets in the Solar System heading out away from the Sun - I could have started with Mercury but decided to start with Venus so that we would end up at a planet that doesn't have a lot of songs written about it. So we were looking for a piece of music that had a title which mentioned JUPITER. So we could have had “Drops of JUPITER (Tell Me)” by Train, “Hey JUPITER” by Tori Amos or even “JUPITER” by Gustav Holst which inspired this connection.

The sequence you heard was:

1. Björk “VENUS as a Boy”
2. Duran Duran “Planet EARTH
3. David Bowie “Life on MARS
4. ?

and those getting the 4th clue correct were:

Dandy* (5)
chrissmith276 (3)

Ansel (3)
Campbell (3)

SIXTEEN WEEKS, SERIOUSLY?: Every chart enthusiast will know that “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” (the answer we were looking for) holds the record for longest consecutive run at number 1 in the UK, yep for 16 weeks Bryan Adams stayed resolutely at number 1 as numerous challengers failed to topple him and outlasting many relationships I've had, funny enough this week (27th October) marks 30 years since he was toppled by U2's excellent “The Fly” and although we may see records this big in the future, our well-connected world means that it is rare that such a slow burn hit will give a song as many consecutive weeks at number 1 in the future, especially with the ACR rule in place.

I realise I could have made this harder by only using 'consecutive' weeks to qualify but the clues were all songs that have accumulated 13, 14, 15 and 16 weeks at number 1 in total.

13 weeks: None
14 weeks: “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran and “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen (two runs of 9 and 5 weeks in 70s and 90s)
15 weeks: “Love Is All Around” by Wet Wet Wet and “One Dance” by Drake
16 weeks: “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” by Bryan Adams

and those getting it all right:

Dandy* (3)

TO THE FAR NORTH!: This was by far the hardest question of the quiz and only 2 people scored any points for it, so a massive congratulations to JulianT and Rio309 for spotting the connection and getting it correct. I think it was quite a horrible question in retrospect really but as someone did get it that at least proves that it was 'guessable'. So here you wanted to look at Geography (which a few of you did see) but actually what I'm looking for was artists/bands based in capital cities; the most northerly capital cities in the world. So it's BANDS FROM THE MOST NORTHERLY CAPITAL CITIES IN THE WORLD going north. A few people came up with other sequences but nothing I could accept as Estonia is not in Scandinavia and the answers given did not make a another different correct sequence unfortunately. sad.gif

We had:

Fourth most northerly capital is Tallinn in Estonia (59.43 N): we heard from Urban Symphony “Rändajad” (2009 Eurovision - 6th)
Third is Oslo in Norway (59.95 N): a-ha “Take On Me”
Second is Helsinki in Finland (60.17 N): The Rasmus “In The Shadows”
and finally first is of course the wonderful Reykjavík (64.13 N)

So we've gone for the beautiful Sigur Rós and “Hoppípolla”

Those getting it right as follows:

ROUND ROUND: OK, everyone did incredibly well with this one - I thought that it may be too difficult to get but some impressively enough managed it from just the first clue! This was of course the initials of the various Sugababes lineups through time starting with 1 (the original, and current) lineup of Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy, then with Siobhán Donaghy leaving in 2001 and replaced by Heidi Range for arguably their most successful era, Mutya Buena leaving in 2005 to be replaced by Amelle Berrabah and finally in 2009 the fourth iteration became completely unrecognisable with the last original sugababe Keisha Buchanan leaving and replaced by Jade 'It's My Time' Ewen.
Sad times. Though Mutya did at least get a certified BANGAH out of it in 2007.

OK, I'd like to apologise now for the Wall round. I think you all hate me now..

I was incredibly evil because I put a false group of Blur singles in there, and er, probably went too far. But three of you did get all four groups and the connections for a maximum of 10 points - so especially well done to Dandy*, Mangø and Chig66. My favourite connection(s) being: Songs I threw together because I ran out of time, and: Songs I threw together plus two more that I ran out of time before I could type them !! Let us never speak of it again.

Here was the solution~

Group 1: UK #2 hits of the 1990s
Group 2: Add 'Blue' at the start to make hit single titles (BLUE Monday, BLUE Velvet etc..) BLUE song was a hit for Mint Royale and the music video inspired the film Baby Driver.
Group 3: Prince singles.
Group 4: Add 'No' at the start to make hit single titles (NO Good (Start The Dance) - Prodigy, NO One - Alicia Keys, etc. )

Chig66 (10)
Dandy* (10)
Mangø (10)
Campbell (5)
Suedehead2 (5)
Ansel (4)
chrissmith276 (4)
CJK (4)
PeteFromLeeds (4)
dan:G (3)
jimwatts (3)
JulianT (3)
paulgilb (3)
Rio309 (2)
Riser (2)
LewisGT (1)

Scoreboard after Round 3:

Dandy* (55)
Mangø (42)
Campbell (35)
paulgilb (35)
jimwatts (33)
JulianT (32)
chrissmith276 (30)
Suedehead2 (30)

Chuffed to get the Iceland one (even if for ever so slightly the wrong reason!) - not that it's moved me especially high up the overall leaderboard 😂.

oh I was halfway there with the Blue one then but thought it was colors in general as I could only muster up Blue Monday and Black Velvet (forgot there was a Blue Velvet and had no idea about a Blue Hotel or Blue Song)
got the No one at least.
never would've got the Prince one as Thunder is an Imagine Dragons song, Girls and Boys is a Blur song, 1999 is a Charli XCX song and Kiss is a Calvin/Dua song preceded by 'One' in my mind. laugh.gif

Very well done Dandy on your brilliant score!

Thank you very much Doctor Blind - this was great fun and I loved the multi-level / gambling element of the guessing.

Speaking of which, going for the phonetic alphabet instead of Greek alphabet 5 pointer dropped me from 3rd to 6th! pirate.gif tongue.gif
