I'm going to kick off a miniseries of polls to see which years of the noughties prove the most popular and which years are remembered less fondly when it comes to what the decade delivered. First up is all about music and the charts. What year stands out to you as the peak of the decade?

Tough question! I'm gonna say 2002 as there were a lot of great dance songs high up the charts that year and trance in particular was still a chart force. 2001 or 2003 either side were both also great (the latter providing the most iconic & stand-the-test-of-time hits of the decade).
From the later years 2009 was a great year for commercial music and evokes a lot of personal memories tied into the time, although 2010 was even better in that department. |

I plumped for 2006 as my favourite album ever was released then but it could have been any really. 2009 was the only year I wasn’t really feeling the scene but 2004-6 were glorious for me.

I've gone for 2006 but it was a tough choice between 2003, 2006 and 2007.
2006 was the year I got into the charts and saw many of the major players in pop releasing new albums - Christina Aguilera, Pink, Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, Shakira, Beyoncé... then of course we were treated to greatest hits albums from the two dominant girl groups of the time - Girls Aloud and Sugababes. The chart rules were changed allowing songs to chart on downloads a week before CD release - this allowed songs to have big jumps to their peaks which as a chart geek was satisfying to see. Then of course there was Rihanna who I became a big fan of upon hearing 'Unfaithful'. It was such an unexpected move by RiRi and her team at the time since I had her firmly in the "club song girl" box at the time. It was also the year that gave us Leona's first hit and Paris Hilton's underrated reggae-pop banger 'Stars Are Blind'. There was just so much goodness! Take That reformed, as did All Saints, which were welcomed. 2003 was an iconic year though! It was another year full of major pop artists - Justin, Britney, Christina, Pink, Avril, Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Outkast, Mis-Teeq, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, the introduction of Kelly Clarkson, Black Eyed Peas... then there was the VMAs with Madonna, Britney and Christina! 2007 wasn't as strong as those two years but my stanning of Rihanna and Leona instantly make it a standout year as they dominated it. Shout out to Britney's comeback, the Spice Girls reforming and Mark and Amy teaming up on 'Valerie'. 2009 wasn't an amazing year for music in retrospect but I loved following the chart at this time. Digital sales were booming and Gaga domination definitely helped the pop scene. Plus X Factor's dominance towards the end of the year on the charts was fun to see. |

this should have been multi choose option
I liked majority of 2000's with perhaps 01, 05 and 06 which I think they were pretty bad for music!!! As a fave I am torn between 04 and 09 but since I can't vote for both I went with 04. |

I think 2006, it was the year I first got into music properly and it felt like a really diverse year - I mean My Chemical Romance getting a number 1 in the same year Shakira did tells you all you need to know! 2005 is a close second though, I just have a real soft spot for the years where indie rock dominated, and while not all have dated well, I do think the ones that have are classics of the genre. 2003 also stands out as having some awesome style shifts.
The latter years had the disadvantage of me being fully into music and listening to the radio/music channels daily so some got overplayed and I don't hold them in as fond a memory, but 2009 in particular stands out as being a very enjoyable and diverse year (helped as I went to quite a few concerts/music events this year x). |

For me 2009 was an incredible year for music and easily the best. It was the last year where there seemed to be loads stuff I thought that was great that did really well in the charts (Gaga, Florence, Jay-Z, Little Boots, Calvin Harris, Lily Allen, Dizzee) and also a huge amount of brilliant indie albums (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Animal Collective, Bat For Lashes, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Royksopp, Wild Beasts, The xx), and probably the last year when a fair amount of decent indie stuff could be commercially successful without the dross that previous years had brought. It was always the year I found it hard to whittle down to on the Record of the Decade game in the chart forum.
My favourite underrated gem of the year would have to be this This post has been edited by RabbitFurCoat: Jan 22 2021, 06:00 PM |

I don't know how accurate my recall of 2009 is but I didn't view it as diverse, at least not in the chart - it seemed saturated with electropop and EDM music. Lady Gaga, BEP, Calvin Harris, David Guetta, La Roux, Agnes to name a few.
One thing I did love about that year though, albeit because of sad circumstances, was Michael Jackson's music dominating the chart and 'Man In The Mirror' finally getting a respectable peak. I don't think we will ever see such an influx of hits to that extent dominate the chart in the wake of an artist's death again. |

It's between 2005 and 2002, and I think 2005 takes it.
In the 2005 camp we have the following top forty hits: Reflekt ft. Delline Bass “Need To Feel Loved” Editors “Munich” Maxïmo Park “Apply Some Pressure” The Killers “Smile Like You Mean It” The Bravery “An Honest Mistake” LCD Soundsystem “Daft Punk Is Playing At My House” Arcade Fire “Rebellion (Lies)” Gorillaz “Feel Good Inc.” Depeche Mode “Precious” Amerie “1 Thing” Röyksopp “What Else Is There?” Bloc Party “So Here We Are” / “Banquet” / “Two More Years” Sigur Rós “Hoppípolla” number 1s for: Arctic Monkeys “I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor” Gorillaz “DARE” Stereophonics “Dakota” Madonna “Hung Up” Oasis “The Importance Of Being Idle” and just missing Top 40 hits for: Ladytron “Destroy Everything You Touch” Annie “Heartbeat” Death Cab for Cutie “Soul Meets Body” HOW is 2006 winning? Chico, It's Chico Time... a number 1 record. No, 2006 was a bit of a fail IMO. |

It's a toss up between 2000, 2002 & 2006 for me just for overall quality. I wouldn't say any year has been necessarily bad though. They all of course have a big amount of highlights.
2006 is my favourite though with 2000 & 2002 being equally second cause I can't separate them haha! This post has been edited by Rob S: Jan 23 2021, 04:02 PM |

Both of which are much higher quality songs than Chico. Your point ? It's Chico Time was awful, I can't deny that, but its success was more of a reflection on the public's love for talent shows at that point rather than the quality of music 2006 had to offer. I have to disagree that Crazy Frog is better than Chico's song though. There is no measurement for how shite they both are. |

2005 for me, that year had so many great albums that I still listen to today. Funeral, Illinois, I am a Bird Now, Silent Alarm, Demon Days, Confessions on a Dance Floor, Takk, Robyn, Witching Hour etc
