10th February 2019
It's a first week on top for Bobbie Gentry's fabulously moody Sermon, from 1967 the song, giving Mercury Rev a second chart-topper just over 17 years since the last one, the gorgeous The Dark Is Rising. Margo Price gets her first doing a pretty good job of competing with the much-missed Bobbie Gentry (missed as in she stopped her music career over 40 years ago). That keeps the Pet Shop Boys 1990 album track at 2 in a week when they release an EP of political or social commentary tracks, called Agenda - as in commenting on those with agendas, while having an agenda (but a worthy one, being as I agree with every word of every song). All four enter my charts, giving Chris n Neil 6 tracks in my chart. The highest new entry is What Are We Going To Do About The Rich at 19 - tax 'em heavily and force 'em to reveal all their interests worldwide, I say! Give Stupidity A Chance is an ode to Trump, or Brexit, or anything really that puts opinion, hatred and lies over facts, and is quite amusing and as clever as always. The Forgotten Child is clearly about the thousands of illegal immigrant children that have gone missing under Trump. Nobody knows where they are, and if they are even alive. Jack Savoretti gets a 4th top 10 in 4 years, Dua Lipa a 7th, huge climbs for Tommy Trash & The Chemical Brothers into the 20 as I'm clearly in a mood for clubbing. Yola, Galantis & The Revivalists get big climbs into the 40, and the only new track that doesn't feature "Pet" in the name is from Marina getting a follow-up to her Clean Bandit collab, her 9th chart entry in 9 years, including a top 10 in Prima Donna in 2012. This week I finally got to see Tears For Fears in concert for the first time - they were still fab, Curt still looking good, and a back catalogue of hits to impress. If I don't get many new entries again next week I may have to rechart Head Over Heels which under-performed in my charts! When I heard it in Donnie Darko I realised the error of my ways. Alison Moyet supported, but Ive seen her headline already with a much bigger setlist. I have to say there can be few touring acts that can start a set with a huge classic on the scale of Everybody Wants To Rule The World. 1 5 1 7 SERMON Mercury Rev featuring Margo Price 395100 2 4 2 5 MY OCTOBER SYMPHONY Pet Shop Boys 255900 3 7 3 4 STARTED OUT Georgia 187200 4 6 4 3 JUICE Lizzo 152000 5 2 1 5 JEALOUSY (ALBUM VERSION) Pet Shop Boys 600000 6 3 1 12 THIS FEELING Chainsmokers featuring Kelsea Ballerini 771000 7 1 1 11 NOTHING BREAKS LIKE A HEART Mark Ronson featuring Miley Cyrus 926050 8 18 8 4 CANDLELIGHT Jack Savoretti 106200 9 10 9 3 TRAMPOLINE SHAED 114000 10 23 10 3 SWAN SONG Dua Lipa 73000 11 11 6 7 ONLY YOU Theophilus London featuring Tame Impala 220500 12 17 12 3 BETTER THAN ME Ten Tonnes 71000 13 13 13 4 VOTE FOR ME The Specials 93150 14 8 4 7 LOST CONTROL Alan Walker & Sorana 313500 15 9 5 6 WICKED GAMES RAIGN 228100 16 51 16 2 ME & U Tommy Trash featuring Anna Lunoe 36750 17 20 17 3 GIVE YOU UP Dido 53100 18 15 15 6 BARCELONA Andy Burrows & Matt Haig 131000 19 NEW 19 1 WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT THE RICH? Don't know or just can't remember that song from Connie Francis.
It's not a big surprise at all, because she recorded over 700 songs in her long music career. John, is it the first Westlife song in the history of your charts ? |

Hello John!
Really like the top 10 entry for "Swan Song", I also enjoyed "Candlelight", heard it for the first time and it's a beautiful song! Also very happy seeing "Bones" gain big! Great chart! |

Hi John!
Apparently Georgia is supporting Jungle on their tour so I might get to hear her live on Saturday (or maybe not, depending on whether the queue is so long I miss the support act). Nice to see Swan Song so high in your chart, I do think it's one of her best (although I've said that about a lot of her songs until they got boring, come to think of it maybe that's why I generally prefer follow-ups to big hits). I've just given Give Stupidity a Chance a listen, it's unquestionably PSB but some of the lyrics are... maybe not my thing oops Great chart |

John, is it the first Westlife song in the history of your charts ? Hi Alex, I didnt know that Connie Francis song either, it was entered into BJSC after featuring as the closing song in the death of a TV character as the series ended, and it's fab. It was shockingly just a minor 1959 hit for her! Westlife, I just checked, have had loads of chart entries and some big ones in my charts, I had no idea I liked them that much 6 16 BOP BOP BABY Westlife 406950 2002 4 13 SHE'S BACK AGAIN Westlife 299750 2006 9 14 QUEEN OF MY HEART Westlife 290150 2001 10 9 WHAT ABOUT NOW Westlife 156700 2009 20 11 OBVIOUS Westlife 142800 2004 17 8 IF I LET YOU GO Westlife 122500 1999 28 6 FOOL AGAIN Westlife 89000 2000 26 7 WORLD OF OUR OWN Westlife 85500 2002 39 5 SWEAR IT AGAIN (62600) Westlife 62600 1999 43 4 UNBREAKABLE Westlife 42100 2002 62 6 MANDY Westlife 39600 2003 58 5 AMAZING Westlife 36600 2006 63 3 MY LOVE Westlife 18200 2000 55 2 HOME Westlife 17900 2007 57 2 FLYING WITHOUT WINGS Westlife 17800 1999 71 3 I HAVE A DREAM/ SEASONS IN THE SUN Westlife 16600 2000 60 2 HEY WHATEVER Westlife 15600 2003 65 2 YOU RAISE ME UP Westlife 14000 2005 65 2 LIGHTHOUSE Westlife 14000 2011 75 1 WHEN YOU TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME Westlife/ Diana Ross 5000 2005 So 21 hits including the current one which is already their 9th biggest. 4 top 10's! cheers! john |

If they did this area I'd go along.... (just checked - I missed them! Doh! Other acts on that I hadnt noticed: Stranglers, Adore Delano, Dodgy, marina, Selector so lots of opps there) Big hits are always ata disadvantage from over-exposure, the bigger the harder it is to hear them as fresh until a long time has passed without hearing them! It would be boring if we liked the same thing - I like the PSB political stuff, but the lyrics are a bit clumsy in song in this case, they'd work better as prose, but nobody would get to hear them cheers! john |

No I'd never heard of Lizzo till Radio 2 picked up on her! She's got pop energy, which is a good thing! I don't know how Lewww does it contest after contest, he's definitely got the knack for a dance tune - one of the A&R dance labels should have snapped him up by now! Yes so grateful for Black Atlass, Jordan, such a great record - I was hoping it would win UP but slow soulful tracks invariably dont appeal across the board on Buzzjack which is a pity - unless it's The Weeknd of course cheers!
