25th December 2016

It's Robbie Williams for a 7th week, I'm still loving the romantic gorgeousness of When You Know, as his current UK sales top 10 Love My Life drops out after peaking at 70. It's clear which one I prefer! The Weeknd goes up to both 2 and 3, current single at 3, and I hope a future single at 2. Highest new entry in the thankfully-reduced-to-75 chart is at 5, Kaiser Chiefs best single in 7 years, We Stay Together - their 8th top 10, and trailing only their 3 chart-toppers - is oddly constructed, a disco belter, and more of a duet with producers' Xenomania's receptionist. She's great!

Vaults get a second top 10 with Randy Crawford's 1980 top tenner, One Day I'll Fly Away, Kylie and Sigma add to their list of top 20's, and ABC grab their 7th top 40 of 2016, a record for them, and it's a proper good ol (under-appreciated) Christmas song to join the oldie festive goodies. Barry Gibb gets his first solo top 40 track in over 30 years, Grouplove get a belated second top 40, and new entry with the uplifting fab Good Morning. Kungs' third top 40 of the year, Betsy's second, and Imagine Dragons new entry at 40, taken from the unfairly-slagged-off fab movie Passengers - criticisms seem to based on moral issues (which is the whole point of the film) rather than for sci-fi blockbuster expectations. Levitate is their 5th or 6th since their debut chart-topper hit, Radioactive.

Little Mix and Charlie Puth are both back, jointly, on a good track, and The Dave Clark 5 also bring Glad All Over back to my charts for the first time since 1993. The 1964 UK chart-topper ended the Beatles domination of the UK charts over Autumn 1963/New Year 1964, and I loved it as a 6-year-old, and also Dave Clark and co's thumping drums. Sadly almost all their hits predate my charts (though they would have had many), though they were there early on over autumn 1968 with the top 5 fave The Red Balloon (one Dave seems to have excommunicated from hits packages). The record has charted at 4 in the Uk sales chart (31 on streaming-included) following a Rangers FC campaign.
