LeBron James top scored with 38 points for the Los Angeles Lakers on the way to a triple-double in their 131-120 victory against his former side the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The four-time NBA Most Valuable Player, who left the Cavs for the Lakers in 2018, also provided 12 assists and pulled down 11 rebounds against the side he led to the 2016 championship.

Victory was just the Lakers' second in six games.

"We needed that one," James said.

"To be able to play how we played, I was able to contribute a little bit and we get a Dub [win], finished the trip off, that's all that mattered to me."

James' decisive 38-point contribution in Cleveland, where he spent 11 years of his NBA career over two spells, came just a day after he become the league's second all-time leading scorer.

The Los Angeles Lakers have sacked head coach Frank Vogel after a poor campaign which saw them miss out on the play-offs.

Vogel's team won 33 of their matches, but lost 49 in a season which saw them finish 11th in the Western Conference.

His final match on Sunday was a 146-141 overtime win over Denver Nuggets.

Rob Pelinka, the Lakers' general manager, said: "This is an incredibly difficult decision to make, but one we feel is necessary at this point."

The Atlanta Hawks and New Orleans Pelicans clinched the final spots in the NBA play-offs with victories in their deciding play-in games on Friday.

The Hawks' Trae Young scored 32 of his game-high 38 points in the second half to inspire his side to a 107-101 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Pelicans then beat the Los Angeles Clippers 105-101 with Brandon Ingram top-scoring with 30 points.

As eighth seeds, both teams will face the top-seeded side in their division.

For the Hawks, that means an upcoming trip to Florida to face the Miami Heat in the first round of the Eastern Conference play-offs, while in the Western Conference play-offs the Pelicans will take on the Phoenix Suns with game one of both best-of-seven series set for Sunday.

Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving has been fined $50,000 (£38,000) by the NBA for "making obscene gestures on court and directing profane language to the stands" in their opening play-off game.

The incidents occurred during the Nets' 115-114 defeat at the Boston Celtics on Sunday.

The Boston crowd constantly booed Irving, 30, and he responded by swearing and raising his middle finger.

Irving spent two years in Boston before an acrimonious departure in 2019.

The Boston Celtics reached the NBA Finals for the first time in 12 years as they held off a determined Miami Heat for a 100-96 game-seven win.

Boston failed in their last five play-off runs and almost did so again as Jimmy Butler missed a late three-point attempt which would have given Miami the lead.

But the Celtics go on to face the Golden State Warriors in the Finals.

"This is a typical Celtics win," coach Ime Udoka said.

Stephen Curry scored 43 points for the Golden State Warriors as they beat the Boston Celtics 107-97 in game four to level the NBA Finals at 2-2.

Boston led 94-90 with just over five minutes left but 10 consecutive points helped the Warriors to victory.

Curry scored seven three-pointers from 14 attempts and did not appear troubled by a left foot injury sustained in game three of the best-of-seven series.

"I don't rate my performances. I just want to win the game," said Curry.
