An independent review into allegations of racism in Scottish cricket has found the governance and leadership of the sport to be institutionally racist.

It also found that those who did raise issues were ignored or side-lined and a culture of "racially aggravated micro-aggression" was allowed to develop.

The review highlighted 448 examples that demonstrated institutional racism.

It was commissioned by Sportscotland after a number of allegations were made last year.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan says the disciplinary hearing into allegations of racism at Yorkshire is a "terrible look" for cricket.

Vaughan is accused of saying "there's too many of you lot, we need to have a word about that" to Azeem Rafiq and three other Asian players at Yorkshire before a T20 match in 2009.

Vaughan has "completely and categorically" denied the allegation - and did so again when giving evidence for the first time in the hearing on Friday.

The 48-year-old was critical of the process and said he met Rafiq in November 2021 because "the whole situation was escalating out of control".

Former England batter Gary Ballance should be fined £8,000 and banned for eight weeks for using racist language at Yorkshire, according to the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Ballance is one of six former Yorkshire players found to have use racist slurs at the club by the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) panel in March.

The charges stemmed from claims made by former Yorkshire player Azeem Rafiq.

Ballance, who retired earlier this month, admitted the charge against him.

The ECB also recommended a combination of fines, suspensions, reprimands and education courses for former England bowlers Tim Bresnan and Matthew Hoggard, former Yorkshire captain and coach Andrew Gale, former Scotland bowler John Blain and former Yorkshire all-rounder Richard Pyrah.

All five did not appear before the independent CDC panel in March after withdrawing from the process and also did not provide written submissions for this hearing in London on Wednesday.

CDC panel chair Tim O'Gorman said a decision on sanctions for the six former players will not be made for "several weeks".

Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat by Valencia was overshadowed by alleged racist abuse from the stands directed at Vinícius Júnior, who was later sent off, with Carlo Ancelotti insisting afterwards that the game should have been abandoned.

The match was halted for 10 minutes in the second half as Vinícius pointed out fans to the referee who he said had racially abused him. The Brazilian carried on playing but was sent off a few minutes later after he became involved in a brawl with Valencia players.

“I don’t want to talk about football today, there is no meaning in talking about football today,” said Real manager Ancelotti afterwards. “What we saw today is unacceptable. An entire stadium chanting racist slurs, I told the referee that he should have stopped the match.”

Micah Richards says La Liga president Javier Tebas' response to the racist abuse suffered by Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr "makes my blood boil".

Real's La Liga match at Valencia on Sunday was paused in the second half after an incensed Vinicius reported opposition fans to the referee.

Vinicius has been the target of racist abuse multiple times this season and the latest incident has seen him receive support from the footballing world.

And there has been widespread condemnation of how the incident has been handled, including from the Brazilian government.

After the match, Vinicius and Tebas were involved in a row on Twitter, after the Brazilian said La Liga "belongs to racists" and "in Brazil, Spain is known as a country of racists".

Tebas responded by saying Vinicius twice did not turn up for a meeting to discuss what it "can do in cases of racism", adding: "Before you criticise and slander La Liga, you need to inform yourself properly."

The latest incident of racist abuse towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr has been reported to the Spanish prosecutor's office as a hate crime, the club says.

Real's La Liga match at Valencia on Sunday was paused in the second half as an incensed Vinicius reported opposition fans to the referee.

Following the match, in which the 22-year-old Brazil international was later sent off for violent conduct, he said "La Liga belongs to racists".

Real Madrid issued a statement on Monday stating that it "considers that such attacks also constitute a hate crime".

Spanish prosecutors will now decide whether to pursue a criminal investigation.

Police in Spain have detained four people suspected of hanging an effigy of the Real Madrid player, Vinicius Jr, from a bridge in Madrid.

The figure appeared in January ahead of a match between Real and their rivals in the capital, Atletico.

It was hung by its neck under a banner saying: "Madrid hates Real".

La Liga will request "more sanctioning powers" so it can punish incidents of racism in Spanish football.

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr has been the target of racist abuse multiple times this season.

The Spanish league's handling of the latest incident at Valencia on Sunday has received widespread condemnation.

Under Spanish law, La Liga can currently only identify and report cases but not impose sanctions, making it feel "powerless".

La Liga could reduce the amount of racist incidents in Spain's top flight in six or seven months if it had the "necessary powers", the league's president Javier Tebas says.

The Spanish league has requested more power to punish incidents of racism.

That came after Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr was the target of racist abuse at Valencia on Sunday.

Valencia's punishment following the racist abuse of Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr has been reduced on appeal.

The partial closure of the La Liga club's Mestalla Stadium has been reduced from five to three matches.

And their fine has been cut from 45,000 euros to 27,000 euros (£23,400) after the Spanish Football Federation appeals committee said it had decided to "partially uphold" Valencia's appeal.

Police are investigating "racist comments" directed towards Everton's Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana.

The 22-year-old shared a screenshot of a racist message he received after Sunday's 4-0 loss at Aston Villa.

Everton said that "such abuse is vile" and Merseyside Police added "we condemn such behaviour in the strongest terms."

"It is appalling to think that anyone would use an online platform to target anyone with abuse based on their race," said a Merseyside Police spokesperson.

"Merseyside Police can confirm an investigation is under way after it was reported racist comments were made on social media directed towards an Everton player."We take all reports of hate crime extremely seriously, and I would like to remind social media users that any belief that they can maintain anonymity online to commit offences is misplaced.

Brentford say they condemn "cowardly" racist abuse sent to defender Ethan Pinnock on Instagram on Saturday.

The abusive message was sent after Brentford's 2-1 Premier League loss to Manchester United.

A statement from Brentford said: "When can we expect social media companies to fully use their resources and technology to provide us with the safer online experience many of us want?"

The Bees added that they have opened an investigation.

"Racial discrimination is a stain on our sport and society and we will continue to fight against it," the statement read.

"We have initiated an investigation and will be seeking the support of the police and [Instagram owner] Meta to identify the perpetrator and hold them accountable.

"Ethan has our full support at this time."

Several ex-Essex players were victims of "racist abuse and discriminatory treatment" during their time at the club, a report has concluded.

An investigation was launched by the county in December 2021 following a series of allegations by Jahid Ahmed, Maurice Chambers and Zoheb Sharif.

No players have been named in the report by Katharine Newton KC.

Chairman Anu Mohindru said "fundamental errors" had been made in the past which did not reflect "the Essex of today".

Players do not think the football authorities are doing enough to effectively tackle racism in the game, says Professional Footballers' Association chair Omar Beckles.

Beckles says members do not believe there are "real, consistent and significant consequences" for racism.

AC Milan's Mike Maignan and Coventry's Kasey Palmer both suffered alleged racist abuse during games on Saturday.

"Responsibility for what happens next lies with the authorities," he said.

"Our members want to see real, consistent and significant consequences for racist abuse, both for the individuals who are responsible and for clubs who fail to get a grip of the issue within their stadiums.
