Documentary series coming to Netflix on 10 February based on the disappearance of Elisa Lam. This is one unsolved mystery that reallllly creeps me out, largely because of that elevator video footage. I didn’t actually realise there was such a back story to the hotel itself so this will definitely be an interesting watch. |

This I will be interested in! There's been quite a few crime/mystery things on Netflix recently so I'd imagine this will be quite popular especially as it's unsolved and so bizarre! I'd imagine it'll be popular with the American Horror Story fanbase as this story inspired the fifth season 'Hotel'.

Most posters on Websleuths think it's just a suicide case and she went in to the water tank herself. Fine but the elevator footage is very odd. Seems as if someone's following her and is outside waiting.

This is just yet another bland pandering Netflix doc, cheaply produced and doesn't offer any real insight. I really wish Netflix would offer more intelligent and creative original content than this garbage but the masses seem to eat this up so can see it continuing sadly. This Twitter thread explains my disdain a little better; I realise this is an unpopular opinion though haha. |

I did find the documentary interesting, particularly learning about Skid Row and the history of the Cecil but I did know quite a few of the details of the story already so I don't personally feel so lead on, but if I knew nothing about the case it certainly would have! It felt very dramatized for what is a true story and a tragedy, I got that impression from the very first few minutes with people dramatically making claims about the disappearance and the notoriety of the Cecil Hotel. It felt like it was made to entertain first and inform second. It felt a bit tasteless in places and I hate how it gave so much power to the web sleuths, who ultimately never knew her or her family. They were given equal 'screen time' as the police, historians, the hotel manager, the mental health specialists as if they were just as important when in reality they did nothing to help solve the case. Especially that Jon who got someone to visit her grave in Vancouver and record it? That was really quite disgusting imo and the documentary did nothing to imply this was a tasteless action. They were all in it for themselves and their hobby rather than actually fighting to bring justice to anyone. |

Jack you are completely right - it was really boring, over dramatic and stretched out. I think the reaction has been quite negative so hopefully Netflix stop these kind of productions, although they must get good viewing figures. The framing of certain aspects and set up as cliffhangers only to displace them later is terrible and I really do feel sorry for Morbid. The documentary even set him up as some sadistic human being all for the sake of a cliffhanger.
I've followed the case before but this really is a case of the internet going off on one. Quite clear to me it was a tragic accident. |

the fact they snuck in that the lid was off right at the end.. after 4 episodes.. i was like what?! i was really feeding in to the idea that there was foul play because there’s no way she could have put the lid back on herself. i was convinced in the beginning that it was someone in the hotel because of that small piece of information. when i’d finally got through everything these internet sleuths had to say + the facts were presented, i could go along with it being an accident.
the way all these coincidences occurred though. i’m not a conspiracy theorist by any means but the whole tuberculosis thing really sent me. for her to be studying it + there to be an outbreak.. iffy. for them to call the test the lam elisa.. explanations are required! one other thing that really irked me not specifically related to this one, but for those that saw night stalker, is the fact that the hotel was described as being a notorious den of iniquity, riddled with murderers, prostitutes etc + even talked about how it was common knowledge that richard ramirez was known to stay there. if that was true, and this hotel was this hideout for these types, why wasn’t this the first place that the police looked for the night stalker back then? so drawn out and bland. getting true crime youtubers to tell me stuff I think most average people already knew? no new info tbh
