Speak Now (2010)

Three albums in now and one thing is clear, Taylor is one incredible songwriter and storyteller. The maturity and growth shown in the three albums over 4 years in fantastic. The country sounds continue, but as with Fearless I feel it’s starting to become more pop/international which I know is to continue into the future.

Mine and Back To December were both really fantastic choices to use as singles to promote the album and get the album off to a really strong start, Sparks Fly wasn’t to bad but missed the mark a little for me. Speak Now which serves as the albums title track has a beautiful backing track that I found myself really enjoying. Dear John which I’m presuming is about American sing John Mayer is one of my favourite songs so far, but then again I’ve always liked those post break up type songs. The banjo backing for Mean is quite addictive, with the sing a long nature of the chorus, particular towards the end make this my favourite song from Speak Now so far.

I can recall hearing The Story Of Us before because as soon as I started I knew exactly what it was, even if I didn’t know all the words. It’s one I really enjoyed and seven songs in this is shaping up to be her strongest album yet. Never Grow Up is another I can remember hearing, but I know that’s from friends using is as the music in the social media montage of their children, it’s a cute pleasant song but one I don’t really feel a connection with.

Enchanted was another that I’m sure I’d heard before because that chorus was familiar. It’s also starting to make me think that’ve I’ve heard plenty more of Taylor’s songs then I actually think I have. Anyway, back on Enchanted I really enjoyed it, more than I thought I would. Better Than Revenge had the break up pop-punk style to it and whilst it’s not my favourite it does add to the quality of this album. Innocent is I think the first song that just kind of passed me by on the album and didn’t leave much of an impression, whilst Haunted sounded like something that Evanescence could’ve released.

The remaining tracks on both the standard and deluxe editions of the albums were all decent but none really stood out to me. Of the three albums so far Speak Now is has been my favourite.

Singles I liked: Mine, Back To December, Mean, The Story Of Us
Album Tracks I liked: Speak Now, Dear John, Enchanted, Haunted

Glad you enjoyed speak now. A master class of an album. I think the first 9 songs are all outstanding. Enchanted is still one of my favourite Taylor tracks overall.

And let's not forget she wrote Speak Now entirely by herself - she's the only credited writer. Impressive...

That was the biggest surprise for me. It’s so well written.

For me, the vault tracks are the strongest in Speak Now then other re-releases so far. Can discuss when you get to Taylor's version.

Red (2012)

Onwards to the 2012 album that I’m fairy sure begun Taylor’s path to pop music force. With Red I was only familiar with a few of the singles and All To Well and whilst in 2012 I wasn’t huge on We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together or I Knew You Were Trouble they have certainly grown on me over the last 10 plus year.

The album begins with State Of Grace which is a pleasant enough opening song but wasn’t one that has stuck with me yet, saying that though I can definitely see the potential for it to grow on me quite a bit. Red was one I thought I remembered from a little over a decade ago and whilst I can hum the chorus I didn’t actually know many of the words, but I really liked it, it has the lovely pop-country vibe to it. Treacherous was a very pleasant surprise and one I can see myself returning to again and I Knew You Were Trouble is excellent, I guess in 2012 I just wasn’t ready to fully appreciate Taylor. A few years ago I discovered All To Well and from the moment I heard it I loved, such a brilliant, brilliant song. Whenever I hear the song name 22 my mind immediately jumps to the song Lily Allen released in 2009, probably because I was around 22 then. Back on topic though and although it’s got the same name Taylor’s 22 is nothing like Lily Allen’s and that’s not a bad thing, the chorus is just so infectious and sing along. I’m guessing it went off on her tour!

Whilst I Almost Do doesn’t hit the highs of the songs that proceed it on the album it is a nice reminder of Taylor’s country type sound. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together was another I wasn’t to keen on at the time, well actually I liked it when it first came out but quickly went off it Now though? I’m firmly back on board. Not Taylor’s best, but a far cry from her worst. Another great song to sing along to and I was a little surprised at how much if this I could sing along too! Stay, Stay, Stay was pleasant enough though it did sound like it would’ve been something that fit on her earlier albums. After that from The Last Time through to Everything Has Changed the album falls into a bit of a lull for me. Things picked up again with Starlight and Begin Again but for me it hasn’t quite captured the great highs of the first half of the album.

The bonus tracks The Moment I Knew, Come Back… Be Here and Girl At Home were all ok but again sadly failed to recapture the first half’s highs of the album. Summing up I think that’s really how I see Red, an album of two halves. The first half had it up there as her best album so far, but the second half brought it back below number one for me.

Singles I liked: We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, I Knew You Were Trouble, 22, Red
Album Tracks I liked: Treacherous, All To Well

1989 (2014)

Arriving now at what I believe is Taylor Swifts biggest album, 1989. Released in October 2014 is serves as the singers fifth studio album and marks her full transition from country star to all out pop star. It was at this stage I personally started to go off Taylor a little (more on that later) but I can remember this album having some absolutely cracking songs (more on that later as well). I’ve been eagerly anticipating listening to see this one as I get the impression many people see it as one of the best albums of the 2010’s. What will I think, well I guess we’ll find out soon.

Kicking off things off is the lead track Welcome To New York and whilst I’m not sure if I’ve heard this original version in full I certainly do know it as it was the soundtrack to all of my friends who were posting about their holidays in New York over the past 8-10 years. On the song itself though it is very strong, almost the perfect introduction to not just the album but to pop star Taylor Swift and whilst I’m not convinced it would’ve worked as a single it certainly is a great song. Second single Blank Space is an absolute cracker of a song and at this stage of the listen through it’d be close to my favourite Taylor Swift song, it’s pop perfection in the mid 2010’s. From the song itself, to the chorus, to the music video everything about this song is fantastic. Third single Style on the other hand was one I was a bit indifferent to back in 2015, I didn’t like or love it, but I didn’t hate it either, it was always just ‘there’. Now though? I quite like it, like it’s predecessors on this album it’s very easy and enjoyable to sing along to. If the rest of the album is like this I’m going to be very happy.

I enjoyed Out Of The Woods, and the run of great sing-a-long songs continues I want to love this rather than like as I think it’s very damn good but there’s just something slight off that prevents it from me elevating it. I do love the repetition of the chorus though! Now we’re on to something I’m not actually familiar with at all, I don’t think I’ve heard All You Had To Do Was Stay and whilst it’s not quite of the high calibre of the songs before it on 1989 that’s nothing bad as the opening four songs set a very high bar for 1989. Ah Shake It Off, a song I remember despising in 2014 and honestly until quite recently as well. In the latter half of 2014 I remember this being everywhere and being quoted by almost all my friends or colleagues. I couldn’t get away from it and I think that’s why I despised it. I have done a 180 now and I quite enjoy this now and whilst it’s not in my top 10 Taylor Swift songs I do have to admit it’s another perfectly crafted pop song.

I Wish You Would is another of the album tracks I hadn’t heard before and like All You Had To Do Was Stay this is one I quite like. Yes it’s not as big as those huge platinum selling singles from this album but it’s still a great song, I think it’s my favourite of the non single so far. Well alongside Welcome To New York. I’m not familiar with this version of Bad Blood and whilst I knew it was different to the remix that was released as a single (which I loved by the way) I was thrown when the verses seemed completely different. I like it but it’s not as good as the single remix for me. I’ve always loved Wildest Dreams from the moment I first heard it. It’s not as in your face as the singles before it but it’s still just as catchy. I’m loving it now as much as I was in 2015. How You Get The Girl wasn’t as strong as the other songs for me but is no means a weak song, in fact I don’t think I’ve come across one on 1989 yet. This Love was ok for me but is my least favourite so far and I Know Places though was quite different and at this point I know I’m getting repetitive but its another great album track. With the closing track on the standard edition Clean I’d probably place it alongside This Love as my two weakest songs so far, saying that though both are still enjoyable.

On to the deluxe edition now and Wonderland is a very solid addition to 1989 though I don’t know if I’d substitute anything out of the standard list for it. You Are In Love is the one I’d probably rank as my least favourite from 1989 and closing track New Romantics is an incredible way to close off 1989. Five albums in and 1989 would have to be my favourite of the bunch so far it’s just jam pack with pop mega hits. It’s fair to say if she wasn’t before the release 1989 then by the time this albums run drew to a close Taylor Swift had announced herself as one of the biggest pop stars in the world. For me 1989 is up there with Adele’s 21 as one of the best albums of the last decade.

Singles I liked: Blank Space, Style, Bad Blood, Wildest Dreams, Out Of The Woods
Album Tracks I liked: All You Had To Do Was Stay, I Wish You Would, Welcome To New York

Reputation (2017)

Reputation was another one that I was quite excited to check out as I only ever really liked Getaway Car from the songs that I’d heard. At the time they were released the first three singles did nothing for me at all. I’m wondering if that’ll change as I dive into Reputation.

First single …Ready For It was one that I found quite jarring and noisy at the time and I wasn’t keen on it at all. Playing it back now for the first time in years though? Well I think it’s great the absolute perfect opener for an album. On the other hand I dislike End Game now as much as I did in 2017, it’s just a song that does absolutely zero for. It’s probably not helped in the slightest that I’m not overly keen on Ed Sheeran either. Whilst at first I found I Did Something Bad quite loud it quickly grew on me and I ended up really enjoying it, and I’m now starting to get the impression that the majority of Reputation will follow this sound. Don’t Blame Me doesn’t quite reach the highs of some of the album tracks on Taylor’s previous albums but I still found myself enjoying quite a bit too. One of the biggest surprises for me is how much I enjoyed Delicate, I remember hating it at the time. In hindsight it must’ve been because it got given the single treatment over another song from Reputation, said song will feature later.

Lead single Look What You Made Me Do is one that I’m guessing is quite polarising amongst the general fanbase. For me I can appreciate and whilst I found it quite insufferable in 2017 it has grown on me, not my favourite but I don’t have the levels of dislike I once had for it. So It Goes… wasn’t to bad, but would probably be the weakest link amongst the first seven tracks and Gorgeous joins Delicate and …Ready For It as singles that really grew on my years down the track. Also I quite liked the lyrics “Guess I’ll just stumble on home to my cats”. Ah Getaway Car, I absolutely love this song, to the point it’s probably my most played Taylor Swift song, well maybe until Cruel Summer came along. I’ll forever be disappointed this wasn’t the worldwide smash I wanted it to be, I also think the music video would’ve been absolutely amazing. Love, love, love Getaway Car.

King Of My Heart was another of the ok songs for me, however Dancing With Our Hands Tied was the first song I found myself not really enjoying much. Dress was another one I unfortunately am not to keen on. Sadly I haven’t been keen on too much after Getaway Car. This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things and sounds like it goes right alongside I Did Something Bad and Don’t Blame Me. Call It What You Want was a nice step up, not as great as the highs of Reputation but better than some of the previous songs for me. Finally New Years Day is a pleasant but slightly forgettable end to the album for me.

Overall Reputation has some great highs, mainly Getaway Car and …Ready For It but it does have that feeling for me that a fair portion of it sounds the same. I will say though that it better than I anticipated. Would definitely give this another chance to grow on me.

Singles I liked: Getaway Car, …Ready For It, Delicate, Gorgeous
Album Tracks I liked: I Did Something Bad, Don’t Blame Me, This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

Lover (2019)

As I enter into Taylor’s seventh album Lover I’m quite looking forward to se what direction of pop she goes in. 1989 was incredible but Reputation felt a little to samey throughout it’s listen through. Saying that though it did have some great tracks, mainly Getaway Car and …Ready For It.

On to Lover though and opening track I Forgot You Existed sounds like an open admission to moving on from revenge and broken hearts and embracing new beginnings and love. Cruel Summer is such an absolute smash of a song and I’m so glad it’s got the success it deserves, even if it’s four years after it’s release. Lover whilst it’s nice and made a good choice for single isn’t amongst my favourites here, though I think it may be more of a grower than an instant hit. Speaking of instant hit The Man was just that for me, such a brilliant song. It hit me pretty much straight away with the lyrics. The Archer and I Think He Knows were both also great tracks and Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince was just so good, love the lyric ‘You play stupid games, you win stupid prizes’. Paper Rings sounds the closest to something you might’ve found on a Taylor Swift album but with a slight pop twist.

Eight tracks in and I can’t believe how much I’m loving it. It’s such a strong album. The greatness continues with Cornelia Street, I seem to remember reading such praise for this online at the time of release in 2019 and I can finally see why. I feel by this stage at track ten I’m just praising every song, so to move things along Death By A Thousand Cuts and London Boy impressed me too. Especially London Boy, actually I’ll probably love anything that name drops places in London or names of London Underground Stations. Soon You’ll Get Better sounded quite similar to White Horse and lyrically I thought it was just so touching.

False God is probably the first song on the album I found myself not really enjoying and whilst I love the message and lyrics of second single You Need To Calm Down I didn’t quite like the music. I really want to like it more than I do though. Afterglow didn’t really do much for me, though Me on the other hand is quite the guilty pleasure. I know it has it’s fair share of hater but I don’t mind it. It’s Nice To Have A Friend and Daylight close out the album and unfortunately neither of the two matched the highs that proceeded them on the album.

All in all though I really loved Lover, I think it could be top of the pile for me now. That and 1989 will take some beating. Saying that I do know Folklore and Evermore are both different to Taylor’s previous albums, so I’m really looking forward to getting into those next.

Singles I liked: Cruel Summer, The Man, Me (featuring Brendon Urie)
Album Tracks I liked: The Archer, Paper Rings, Cornelia Street, Death By A Thousand Cuts, London Boy, I Think He Knows, Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince

Great reviews on these latest few albums, 1989 is definitely a career highlight for her as far as it being one of those albums that really defines an artist. Personally I prefer Reputation to Lover but I still agree that Lover is a very solid album through and through. The first half eclipses the second half but there is still quality there. Same probably goes for Reputation although the better songs are a bit more mixed in.

Looking forward to reading what you think of folklore and evermore. At the time of their releases they seemed kind of polarising from the general public with such a big change in style from her last few albums. Even with Reputation being “darker” it was still primarily a pop album it was just a slightly different type of pop to, say, Lover, which is as bubblegum as she’ll ever be.
