1960s Top 40 Rate - The 'Impossible' Part 1 Numbers 29 and 30s While there were several different UK singles charts during the 1960s (with the NME weekly chart being the most widely followed), the Guinness Book Of Hit Singles and, subsequently, the Official Charts Company use the Record Retailer chart as their reference during this period, so that's the one we'll be using here. The 'Official' Singles Charts, as we know it, didn't begin until February 1969. These series of rates will cover March 1960 (when the chart expanded to a Top 40 for the first time) to December 1969.
