Regardless of how good the cover is, I think the song is too connected with its 1997 re-release in many people's minds to do well now as a cover.

New Drake is ok. But I still wouldn't want it hogging up the top spot for weeks. His voice is so monotonous and dreary, it actually kinda ruins it for me.

But yeah. My fave of his for a while. This is more like a 7 out of 10 as everything else is a 4 sort of situation.

Both Calvin/Dua and Drake will do really well in streams and sales though, so there could be a close race to #1 this week between Freaky Friday, One Kiss, and Nice For What. Possibly 2 debuts in the Top 3, the first time since Divide right?

But yeah it's gonna be interesting to see how Ariana fares. I feel like she could just as easily do a Shawn Mendes, so we'll see.

If Calvin doesn't do a Rudimental and only manages to peak at #2 for a few weeks, how many #2's would that be for him? Hasn't he had like 4 or 5 atm?

Well done to Ruti, she richly deserved to win this series of The Voice. For me 'Dreams' was the stand-out vocal performance of the whole Series.
Sure it will decline at a fast rate at some point today but I will definitely download at some point as I think she has a very unique voice (which Tom Jones was the only one to turn for in the blind audition). We know from previous Series that winning is unlikely to translate to much success in the Singles chart but people are a little too keen to write off Ruti's longer term chances, I personally think she has a chance to sell Albums in greater numbers than previous winners.

I think the problem with the voice is you don't really get to know the acts as much as the x factor you don't seem to get to see as much of their growth as only 2 live shows I didn't feel as atta he'd to a certain contestant any could have won really and wouldn't be fussed so does any of them really deserve to win

At the time one of my mates was actually living with Leah when that came out and she was pretty devastated it didn't become a hit. Particularly as will.i.am had collaborated with her and around the same time had a number 1 hit with "It's My Birthday", and Ella Henderson had just had a big hit with "Ghost" too (obviously from X-Factor, but she didn't win, etc) and also Becky Hill had just had her number 1 with "Gecko (Overdrive)" too. All the ingredients were there.

Yeah Becky got to the semis! It's odd, even in the US they haven't really had many huge artists from The Voice, the biggest is probably Cassadee Pope who had a fairly big country hit with Wasting All These Tears and a top 10 album, and I guess Melanie Martinez as well who I think came 5th or something. For some reason the format just doesn't seem to stick at creating stars. It feels a bit like watching glorified karaoke to me when you know not a lot is gonna happen afterwards

I think from us the highest peak is still Stevie McCrorie's winning single which I believe got to #8, and then Leah McFall's random top 10 cover of I Will Survive is the only other top 10! Home really should have been, it was actually a great pop song that seemed like it had effort put into it unlike a lot Voice debuts.

There have been 7 series of The Voice UK. In terms of solo releases, The Voice UK contestants have had a grand total of 2 top 10 singles - both covers - and 2 top 10 albums. The last artist to get a top 10 album was Andrea Begley, back in 2013.

There have been so many incredible acts on the show through the years - Bo Bruce, Vince Kidd, Leah McFall, Stevie McCrorie, Mo Jamil...then there is Kevin Simm, who had success before he went on The Voice UK. His lack of success after the show (his album missed the top 100) can't be down to the artist, surely, as he has a proven track record. So what is the point of the supposed "coveted record deal", when it doesn't even equate to 5000 album sales for most of the winners?

You’re right, it’s because the record label seemingly give them a tiny budget, which means they come out with music that makes no sort of statement whatsoever. Kevin Simm was incredibly talented on the show but his lead single was just some random album track anyone would fail to recall. They need to invest and hire good songwriters and producers because the material that is coming out at the moment is so forgettable that I’m really not suprised its being glanced over.

The only time a single from The Voice act has actually stood oit (aside from Becky Hill) is Leah McFall’s Home but for some unknown reason Radio 1 decided not to support. The fact Radio 1 has only supported one single (again aside from Becky) from The Voice is ridiculous, and even then, the single (Worry About You - Tyler James) was the second single AFTER the album had already flopped due to a lack of support. I will never understand why they didn’t get Radio 1 to support the relevant Voice acts when it was on the BBC. If you make the acts successful, you can have a more successful show! I remember at that stage as well they were supported any and every X Factor act.

I noticed that as well (on iTunes) although curiously you can still download it from Amazon.

Incidentally it is the second time Ed Sheeran has been involved with a cover of "Candle In The Wind" (there is a version on the 2014 reissue of Elton's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" Album, I suppose that is why they have made it clear the latest version is the 2018 Version).

I much prefer the original Candle in the wind from the 70s and I particularly likethe 1988 live version with the lyrics about Marilyn, rather than the 97 reworked lyrics for Lady Di
Ed’s cover is horrendous, in a faster weird tempo that doesn’t fit the song, lacklustre production, weird backing vocals that dont fit and some horrible falsetto from ed where he doesnt hit the notes
But his 2014 version was even worst with some fake irish violins ala corrs

Yes the 1997 version and its new meaning is what most people associate the song with, so any subsequent version is a hard act to follow. Candle in the Wind is one Elton John song that shouldn't be covered I think. Although if it would have been left out of the album, Ed would have probably covered 'Sacrifice' which would have been worse imo, as Sacrifice is my favourite Elton John song.

Regardless of the merits of the cover, it is still a silly decision to make the Ed version album only though.

It did prevent visibility on the UK Top 50 playlists since they weren't updated, which I imagine must give at least 30K streams per day to any song on it. Post Malone's "Psycho" missed out on debuting #1 in Australia (and it's still been stuck at #2 every week since) because of this.

Yeah I don’t think the freeze made a huge amount of difference. Maybe Calvin would have have fraction more streams for one day but that’s it. #1 could be very close in sales on Friday. I still think Dicky will nab it but Calvin has quite a lead on iTunes now and is looking to overtake on Spotify tomorrow.

I think Kylie and Spotify is a lost cause. Even with the popup about the album, she's managed album equivalent streams of 1,143 on a current total of 40,685. She's sold nearly 6 times more on vinyl than streaming which tells you all you need to know about the music consumption habits of the average Kylie listener in 2018.

We will never know of course but the breakdown of the 1st vote in the Final (with all four finalists still in) suggests similar popularity (Donel 29.58% and Ruti 29.41%).
Interestingly Ruti won the final vote (with just final two) fairly comfortably (Ruti 58.3 and Donel 41.66%) and I think her Winner's song was more suited to success than his.
