"I'll stand by you" is basically the first song I heard from them so of course it is gonna bring back some memories. I remember reading about them on some internet forums and downloading both "I'll stand by you" and "Wake up" and loving it
I remember as well witnessing WWTNS?! in the album charts and thinking they weren't doing too bad for a girl band. I wasn't a huge fan back then but it was the first album of them I bought, and I still love it a lot. I've listened to it so much over the years, and the likes of "Hear me out" and "Deadlines & diets" are still in my head I don't know why but I still find weird they didn't release the album on the back of "Love machine". Surely that was wise though since "I'll stand by you" was much bigger. |

BUMP! Will leave this open for 1 more week before starting the 2005 thread.
I was properly stanning for GA during 2004, The Show and Love Machine are both two of my favourite singles of theirs and I remember so clearly seeing them on the music channels all the time. |

The Show and Love Machine are far better than I'll Stand By You. I think if you compare some of the performances of Love Machine in 2004 to the 2012 one on Graham Norton, you can see how far they've come!

'The Show' - I guess this single must have premiered in May 2004, so it's exactly 10 years old. This song was being promoted while I was doing my GCSEs, so this song strongly reminds me of that time. I loved their performance of it on CD:UK - I had it recorded on VHS and would replay it over and over!
'Love Machine' - this was definitely my first "wtf?" moment with Girls Aloud. A preview of the song aired on SMTV or CD:UK, and I remember many of us on internet forums were completely baffled by it. The premiere left me feeling a bit confused too... it just seemed such a weird song. Dare I say it, but I honestly thought they had misfired, and that it had the potential to flop. But of course it was the complete definition of "grower", and by the time it was released I was completely obsessed with the song. Both peaked at #2... this was becoming really frustrating, as a fan of them & as a follower of the charts! Their singles had gone 1-2-3-2-2-2 up to this point, and of course their debut album was #2. It was just like... will they ever get a second #1? ... 'I'll Stand By You'! Their second best cover single imo, after 'Jump'. Was so, so pleased when this went all the way to #1 - and for two weeks. I think there was a bit of a grumble on the internet that after a lot of fantastic originals, it was disappointing that they could only manage #1 with a ballad cover, but I really didn't mind. The 'What Will The Neighbours Say?' album - what a mind-blowing listen that was back in 2004. Fantastic first week sales too, about 85k. It was their first release to miss the Top 5, peaking at #6, but it was such a strong and competitive album market in the run up to Christmas, so I wasn't too gutted. I have a strong memory of the announcement of the 'Love Machine' formats being revealed, and me being a bit confused about what a "picture disc" was. It wasn't stocked in my local HMV, but I really wanted it. A friend of mine from school, who was also into them, bought it for me from a record shop which was local to her. Prior to that, there was the 3" pocket CD for 'The Show', which was rather hard to come by - it was nowhere to be found where I lived. Luckily my parents had planned a trip to London in summer 2004, so I managed to find it in HMV Oxford Street. I wish I'd bought more than one of these! Did any of you ever play the Games that were on the Girls Aloud website / the CD singles? I remember the I'll Stand By You game being particularly addictive. Here's a screen shot... I really liked the drawings of the girls. |

Another great year for the girls, loved "The Show" still one of my faves, "Love Machine" took me a while to warm to but I now love it and I did actually like their cover of I'll Stand By You I thought It was great and glad it became another #1 for them and shame about The Show sold so little, should at least be silver status, (why wasn't downloads added sooner).
The album "What Will The Neighbours Say" such a fantastic follow up, better than the first and should have been #1 (still livid at the #6 position) but at least it sold more than they're debut. FAVE TRACKS = The Show (of course), Wake Me Up (another gem), Love Machine, Graffiti My Soul (such a missed opportunity) and Deadlines & Diets was quite fun in a camp sort of way and Hear Me Out was lovely. |
