hi.gif

This will be happening! Unfortunately I can't promise it to be done in a timely manner, but eventually we'll be getting my top 60-ish countdown for the year as usual. Hopefully some honorable mentions to start as I figure out which songs will miss the cut. Will Taylor Swift claim a 2nd EOY #1 in a row? Actually no, she won't. Who will get there instead? Arizona Zervas "Roxanne"

So I was expecting a more divisive reaction to "Roxanne" than what I've seen for it so far. I mean, you don't just take an iconic song title from The Police and expect to get away with it! Not saying I feel that way but I thought more people would. Actually this is a major earworm, been stuck in my head most days and I'm not complaining about it. I also love the name Arizona Zervas, and as far as I can tell it's his real name. I'm a big fan of the short songs trend too so this just ticks all the boxes for me. It was my early pick for Christmas #1 but that didn't quite pan out. No worries, I'm a fan and if the song had a little more time it could've made my top 60. Arizona's follow-up "FML" is out there and I look forward to hearing it.

Billie Eilish "When The Party's Over"

I'm so happy to see Billie taking the world by storm, although dare I say her album hasn't lived up to the hype for me. I still prefer "Ocean Eyes" and "Bellyache" with a few exceptions, and "When The Party's Over" is one of those few. Over here it was pushed to radio a month after "Bury A Friend" and a month before "Bad Guy", so I can count it as 2019. That was quite bold of her label to basically push three songs simultaneously, and in fact it did pretty well despite being sandwiched between two bigger singles. In the UK it was a victim of premature ACR (is that an okay name for it?) but that clearly hasn't hindered her career trajectory. We should see Billie at least one more time later on if not twice.

Blackbear "Hot Girl Bummer"

Here's a name I really didn't think I'd see again. Blackbear made the slightest impact a couple years ago with "Do Re Mi" and the song screamed "one-hit wonder" to me. I'm probably not the only one who thought "Hot Girl Bummer" was some sort of response to "Hot Girl Summer" since they were released within a couple weeks of each other. I was actually impressed at how quickly he came up with it because it's such a good song in its own right, but alas it was just a coincidence and the two songs weren't related at all. I do think the timing of it really worked to its advantage and led to more curiosity streams than it would've had otherwise! If he keeps this up though he's just going to be known for being angry and bitter all the time laugh.gif

Blanco Brown "The Git Up"

So you're probably not surprised to hear that I like this song. I'm surprised that it's just an honorable mention here and not in my EOY, but the competition was strong this year. IMO "The Git Up" is the superior country-rap song over "Old Town Road", and it filled some sort of void for me that formed after the former became an earth-shattering mega-smash, when it was really just an okay song. It's weird because obviously "Old Town Road" is pretty responsible for "The Git Up" being a hit in the first place (it was more or less being described as the next "Old Town Road"), yet "The Git Up" remained completely overshadowed by it the whole time, so I still feel like it had the potential to be bigger. It almost didn't even chart in the UK! Anyway, issa bop, I'm glad it had a chance to shine and I hope it won't be completely forgotten a few years from now.

Giving 'The Git Up' a listen now, a very catchy crossover song! Can definitely see why you like it.

As for the others, I liked When The Party's Over, Roxanne isn't my thing but is very catchy, but I wasn't a fan of Hot Girl Bummer sadly.

Daddy Yankee & Katy Perry feat. Snow "Con Calma"

"Informer" by Snow has always been one of my favorite 90s songs, so I was pretty excited to hear "Con Calma" and realize it was basically a Spanish version of it! The best thing about "Con Calma" is that Snow is actually on the recording, putting him in the charts for the first time since 1993. How many one-hit wonders get to claim a second hit 26 years later!? That was an awesome move for Daddy Yankee to pay respect to the original song. Then the Katy Perry remix shows up, adding to the randomness of it all! She rarely does features so that's always a treat, and it was not only redemption for the floppy "365", but a nice setup for her own single to smash over the summer. Plus Katy genuinely elevates the song, I especially LOVE her on the chorus wub.gif

Dan + Shay & Justin Bieber "10,000 Hours"

So Dan + Shay have actually been on the scene since 2013 and are already on their third album. I was absolutely not impressed with their first singles, they barely qualifed as country and I guess were just too amateur for me to take seriously. Finally they've proven me very wrong over the past couple years, with THREE crossover hits (most country artists are lucky to get one!) that I actually like and are bound to become classics. "10,000 Hours" is not the best one but is obviously the biggest due to the Biebs, who can now add country to the very long list of genres covered in his discography. laugh.gif What blows my mind is that I actually did get my middle name from my grandma...HOW DOES HE KNOW THIS??? Anyway, if this is the only song of theirs you've heard, I would recommend "Speechless", which will probably be the quintessential wedding song for the next 10 years (and deservedly so!).

Daya "Insomnia"

After a couple of misfires in 2017-2018, Daya had a real return to form last year which was great to see. She released a handful of singles and "Insomnia" was the best of all, an evolution from her usual electropop into trance territory. I think of it as her "A Year Without Rain" moment because it has that same vibe. It's frustrating that Daya's style of pure pop is no longer on trend because I hate to see her career dry up when she's just getting started. But if she keeps the quality up like this you just never know! I also liked "Keeping It In The Dark" from the 13 Reasons Why soundtrack. Definitely looking forward to more from Daya!

Gesaffelstein & Pharrell Williams "Blast Off"

Gesaffelstein is not remotely new to the music scene either, but I didn't take notice of him until "Lost In The Fire", for reasons both good and bad. "Blast Off" was his next single and seems to have been very overlooked! I just happened to hear it on the radio once, otherwise it would've passed me by too. Despite being very 80s it stands out from other recent 80s-inspired songs--or at least I can't think of one to compare it to. The build-up to each chorus is solid and the vocals are Pharrell at his finest. If these two singles are any indication I should probably check out more of Gesaffelstein's music.

Hozier "Almost (Sweet Music)"
Hozier "Movement"

Hozier finally released his second album in 2019, and while it wasn't 100% worth the long wait, it does have its share of gems. Over here "Almost (Sweet Music)" was the upbeat and catchy post-album single, while "Movement" was the pre-album single and equal parts soothing and stunning. The album reached #1 on Billboard and Hozier's tour got some attention here; I actually got to see him live and he was great! I have no idea what happened in the UK and can't believe Radio 1 ignored both of these songs; the only Hozier song they playlisted wasn't Radio 1-friendly in the first place. So that was unfortunate as I feel he was prematurely written off as a one-album wonder. Anyway, hopefully his next one won't be a 4.5-year wait.

Lauren Daigle "You Say"

If this song has passed you by, you've really missed out. It was actually released two summers ago and was top 10 on US iTunes for the better part of 6 months without ever going top 40 officially, until its airplay finally caught up last winter. This is partially because Lauren's voice bears an uncanny resemblance to Adele, not just on "You Say" but a handful of songs on her album. With Adele still refusing to come out of hiding, she makes a pretty good substitute! I do find it disappointing that Lewis Capaldi also went the Adele-soundalike route with "Someone You Loved" (not vocally obvs but pretty much everything else about the song) and ended up with a much bigger hit than Lauren did. I love Lewis too, but go figure!

Maren Morris "Girl"
Maren Morris "The Bones"

Maren's second album was one of my most anticipated releases of 2019! I thought "Girl" was a very fitting lead single choice and album title, with the video depicting her experience as a female in the music industry. I imagine there being added pressure on her simply because there's so few women succeeding in country right now, and if that's the case it's completely unfair for her. Crazy that the gender disparity has been a well-known problem for years and still continues to get worse :\
If I'm being honest neither of these singles compare to the ones on her first album, but "The Bones" comes very close. It doesn't have that big hook or a big note or anything like that, but after probably 100 listens I'm not sick of hearing it. It's perfect for radio and has become her first crossover hit which was long overdue, so yay *.* It may actually make my official EOY but I'm leaving this here in case it doesn't!

Nicki Minaj "Megatron"

This was supposedly Nicki's last song of her career but let's take that with a pinch of salt. She definitely seems salty herself at how front-loaded her songs are these days; "Megatron" especially had a decent first week and just about vanished from the charts the week after. If I'm judging based on just the songs themselves I think her recent stuff is actually decent, is that just me?? I genuinely thought this one was catchy and had potential, but if everyone's moving on from Nicki I can't blame them.

Panic! At The Disco "Hey Look Ma, I Made It"

I'm really glad that the "High Hopes" success wasn't just a fluke and led to at least one more hit for Panic! At The Disco...although I'm just now seeing on Wikipedia that was only the case in America and basically nowhere else, oops! "Hey Look Ma, I Made It" was the obvious choice, anyway, although my opinion of it went back and forth for months. IIRC it sounded amazing when blasted on the car radio, but was irritating with headphones on. Either way, I suppose it's a lesser version of "High Hopes" in every aspect, so why not just listen to "High Hopes"?

Here are some of the songs that I liked since the last comment:
"Con Calma": I actually prefer the original over the Katy Perry remix, sounds more like a huge summer song for me!
"10,000 Hours": Dan + Shay sounds great on this and Justin Bieber sounds okay here.
"Blast Off": Very enjoyable dance song and Pharrell sounds like he's still got it!
"Hey Look Ma, I Made It": It is High Hopes 2.0, but I like both songs.

You Say is a brilliant worship song, the success it got in America (#1 on the worship chart for over a year I think ohmy.gif) might have been a bit over the top but it is a really beautiful and powerful song.

I never heard 'Informer' until a couple of months after Con Calma had been and gone and even then I didn't immediately realise it was basically the same song laugh.gif

Twenty One Pilots "Chlorine"
Twenty One Pilots "The Hype"

Gosh, when Twenty One Pilots were riding so high in 2016 I was pretty sure it'd lead to a rock revival of sorts, kind of like what Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance did for rock ten years prior. It's crazy how abruptly their momentum stopped. I gave up on them briefly because "Jumpsuit" was off-putting and "Nico and the Niners" and "My Blood" were bland AF sad.gif However, "Chlorine" is catchier with a better melody and started to win me back over. I do respect that they've stayed true to their sound and didn't completely sell out after Blurryface; it just felt like this album was very lacking in comparison. IMO they saved their best single for last with "The Hype"! I'm sure it's directly inspired by their own hype and experience with fame, which is why it sounds so genuine. They're not trying to fit in or chase trends, this song just happened to sound great on the radio. Despite my criticisms I wouldn't necessarily have changed anything if I were them; the majority of the album just wasn't for me and I hope to like the next one more!

Zara Larsson "All The Time"

Does the intro to "All The Time" (from the breaking of the day to the middle of night, etc.) remind anyone else of "Doin' It Right" by Daft Punk or is it just me?? I honestly thought it was a sample except the lyrics are obviously different. So Zara hasn't released anything comparable to "Lush Life" or "Symphony" lately, but I'd say this comes close! It actually did relatively decently on airplay over here but didn't get the support it deserved in the UK. Did Radio 1 even playlist it? I really liked "Don't Worry Bout Me" too but am hoping for even better from her in 2020, only because I think she needs another undeniable banger.

Okay, I will leave it at that for the honorable mentions, and get going with the official EOY countdown next!

I was actually going to comment on seeing Insomnia in your EOY! I'd been racking my brain forever thinking of what song it reminded me of and A Year Without Rain was the closest I could get but wasn't quite right...turns out Can't Get You Out Of My Head was the one all along! I agree that Katy really elevates Con Calma, I love her contribution to it! wub.gif

I feel like You Say is a song that's going to be used for years to come on shows like X Factor, BGT/AGT, The Voice, etc so I think it's going to be really well-remembered in the way that Rise Up is, it's perfect for those kinda shows. Gorgeous song and I'm glad I checked it out!

The Bones is one that really stuck with me despite never listening to it loads and loads in a particular week - I think it had a sole week in my low top 40 and that's it! I really enjoy it though, she sounds so damn good on both that and GIRL heart.gif
