BILLBOARD: Taylor Swift's '1989' Aiming For 900,000-Plus Sales Debut Billboard (October 27th, 2014): "Taylor Swift's 1989 album has been on sale for less than a day, but its first-week sales forecast has already been upgraded. Industry sources now suggest the fast-selling set may sell over 900,000 copies in the week ending Nov. 2. As earlier reported, that would secure Swift the largest sales week for any album since March of 2013, when Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience debuted with 968,000 sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album's current sales projection is its second increase in two weeks. Last week, it was pegged to do between 800,000 and 900,000. A week before that: 750,000. The set is off to a quick start with digital retailers and Target (which carries an exclusive version of the album with bonus tracks). Can 1989 reach one million sold in its first week? Anything is possible, though it's incredibly difficult for albums to achieve sales of that magnitude. (Only 18 albums have sold a million in a single week since SoundScan started track sales in 1991.) Also important to keep in mind: In 2014, only one album has sold a million copies in total: the Frozen soundtrack (3.2 million). The next-largest seller is Beyonce's self-titled set, with 787,000. Thus, if forecasts hold, 1989 could -- after only one week on sale -- become the second-largest selling album of 2014." http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/...000-sales-debut |

HDD: Swiftly Making History Hits Daily Double (October 28th, 2014): "Taylor Swift will become the only artist to sell more than 1 million albums in a single week on three separate occasions—not to mention on three consecutive releases. We can now comfortably project 1989 will pass the million mark in its first week of release. 2012’s Red opened with 1.2m, while 2010’s Speak Now opened with 1.05m." http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgi |

I really don't get why the initial predictions were so 'low'.

BILLBOARD: Taylor Swift's '1989' Heading for 1 Million Sales Debut Billboard (October 28th, 2014): "Taylor Swift's 1989 just keeps getting bigger. Industry sources now forecast the album to sell at least one million copies in its first week. That would make 1989 just the 19th album to sell a million in a single week since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991, and Swift the first act to earn three million-selling weeks. Plus: 1989 will be the first album released in 2014 to sell a million copies. If 1989 sells over a million, Swift will notch the biggest sales week for an album since her own Red registered the last million-selling week: when it debuted nearly two years ago (in the week ending Oct. 28). 1989 will also instantly become 2014's second-biggest selling album after just one week on sale. Currently, the top two sellers this year are the Frozen soundtrack (3.2 million) and Beyonce's self-titled album (787,000). They are followed by Lorde's Pure Heroine (767,000) and Coldplay's Ghost Stories (737,000). The latter is 2014's biggest-selling album released this year, as Frozen, Beyonce and Pure Heroine came out in 2013." http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/...sales-1-million |

She selling her albums for 99cents trying to beat Britney's record for 'Best Female Debut Of All Time'. Sorry AINT happenin'. Doesn't matter anyway, as the sales won't be included in her total. As a result of the Lady GaGa 'Born This Way' 99c amazon deal which resulted in sales of 1.1m in a week, Billboard brought in the following rule: Billboard Pricing Policy "Unit sales for Albums priced below $3.49 during their first four weeks of release will not be eligible for inclusion on the Billboard album charts and will not count towards sales data presented by Nielsen SoundScan." http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news...ovember-21-2011 |

And just to silence all those that want to compare sales markets. Why didnt Madonna do it? Mariah? Gaga? Celine? Christina? Pink? Etc. Just to create discussion in international. I think more recent years (basically the internet) have led to much more rabid fanbases in general. If people like Madonna and Mariah were at their commercal peak in the early 2000s, I imagine they'd have been the likes to open with pretty massive sales. Of course, Madonna was pretty much at the peak of her commercial powers with Music in 2000, but as a pretty mature woman by that age she wasn't the type to have very obsessive fans. Mariah also had Emancipation in the mid-2000s, but that was basically a comeback for her so wasn't gonna start hugely. Not to diminish Britney of course - highest female début of all time is a huge, huge achievement. But those couple of examples are ones I'd pick a bone with. Then of course, Gaga did manage a million in a week (though not without a heavy discount boost) |

Did not know that Britster! Good rule to have, tbh.
I agree that Madonna and Mariah may have been able to beat it if all conditions were in the right place. Though, standom aside, the fever pitch Britney acheieved with the release of "Oops" is close to impossible to replicate, considering the kid, teen and young adult obsession that was in place with her at the time. |

How is Taylor so popular? What does she have that Katy, Rihanna etc don't? She seems to be a MASSIVE album seller and yet sell millions of singles, too. She's very much the pop star so it's not like she's some indie girl/rock girl with an underground fanbase.

Crazy how she managed to go from the US market with a country audience to the whole world with a pop focus this time...and in 2013 her Red Tour plus the sale of her records brought more than 40 M dollars making her the most profitable artist of 2013!
