Ending one of the hardiest Melodimyths of recent times, last week saw Ace Wilder prove that over 40s CAN survive the app vote. The key factor enabling this modern miracle is currently under investigation by top queer scientists - the secret to Ace's success was originally thought to be three inches of slap and pretending to be 27, but Dinah Nah's failure sadly led to the junking of that pleasingly simple solution. The Institute is mildly relieved looks don't appear to play much part, as the thought of crossbreeding Dinah Nah with Nano to create a pink-weaved bull-ox for Melodi success was too much to stomach (even for those who'd had the misfortune of seeing Cookies N Beans live and living to tell the tale).

Here's the projected timetable for the week:

Thursday: Reviews of the rehearsals with thirty second clips of the performances on SVT.se, and a minute-long clip of the studio versions in the afternoon. You can take your impressions with a pinch of salt - in traditional fashion I will be taking them with a pinch of hyperbole.
Friday: Reviews of the second rehearsal and the notoriously hit-or-miss results of the 'gen-rep' poll of audience members at the rehearsals
Saturday: In previous years 2:30 clips of the studio versions of the songs were uploaded to SVT in the early afternoon around 1pm (GMT), but the 1 minute clips this year may see those retired. A livestream of the heat will start at 7pm GMT on svt.se/melodifestivalen

Roger Pontare sounds intriguing which is making me uncomfortable.

Up could end up being very annoyingly catchy over time. So far no though.

Dismissed. Self-explanatory.

Lisa Ajax. Noooo I had high hopes but it does sound pretty mediocre.

Ingrosso. The lack of your cookie cutter sweet boys in this heat means this will go DTF. But so far it don't impress me much.

Mariette: Not what I was expecting, her voice is amazing. Very radio friendly. The performance for this should be amazing.
Roger Pontare: Getting Jon Henrik Fjallgren vibes.
Etzia: Excellent Beat. Very tropical. OMG I LOVE IT *.*
Allyawan: Sticks out like a sore thumb in this heat, but for good reasons. I think he and Etzia would be fighting for a spot for AC, Correct?
Dismissed: The ugliest set of men I've ever seen in my life. Good I suppose.
Lisa Ajax: Good. But she's not going to win the whole thing with this.
Benjamin Ingrosso: A tad boring.

DTF: Mariette, Lisa Ajax
AC: Roger Pontare, Etzia
5th: Allyawan
6th: Benjamin Ingrosso

Outside of Lisa and Mariette, I know nothing about these artists, but have read the readup on Scandipop - this is what I'd predict, but I likely think Allyawan and Etzia would swap places, possibly.

Quick first impressions:

Mariette - sounds like the sort of song Loreen would be expected to return with, definitely can't tell how amazing it's likely to be from the first minute but it's very promising indeed
Roger Pontare - sounds like it gets going later in the song, but the first minute is nothing special
Etzia - This sounds so good <3 The backing music is so familiar, but it's instantly catchy
Allyawan - Hmm...sounds very dull from the first minute
Dismissed - Does what it does well I guess
Lisa Ajax - Ooh this sounds big, the f-bomb though
Benjamin Ingrosso - Thought this would be a lot bigger, it sounds a bit like a boyband doing disco record from the late 90s...like 911 or Kavana or something

Definitely between Mariette, Lisa and Benjamin for DTF, I wonder who will have to go through AC (hopefully Benjamin)

I don't have time to listen to them all rn as I'm about to go out but you can tell Mariette is building to a massive chorus, I LOVE the sound of it!

Also listened to Lisa and for some reason I felt most excited about her aside from Loreen - but this is not the song to challenge the big wigs :/ It sounds good but I expected some proper ballsy undeniable tune.

Benjamin sounds like he has a bloody DIRGE. Is there any hope of that not going DTF?

What I'm gathering is that Dismissed are the LGBT apology gift for the lack of overly heterosexual cock-rockers this year. Sounds like something I can get on board with and I think it's on course to be my favourite in this heat.

Mariette sounds good, Lisa and Allyawan sound quite meh, I want to like Roger Pontare more but a couple of listens and it's done nothing for me yet. And Etzia... I don't really know what to make of that.

Mariette's reminds me a bit of Perfect Strangers but I reckon it's gonna suffer from being nowhere near as imposing as Don't Stop Believing. Adore the sound of Pontare's but I'm astounded that Christer's put on two opening tracks that take over a minute to get to the chorus - despite Etzia sounding like she's having LIVE SUNSTROKE during her chorus she might get through on the basis of being the first thing that just gets to the bloody point.

Allyawan has excellent production - it reminds me a lot of Förlåt mig but if it had been done by Zayn. Don't think it's got enough of a hook to go through. Dismissed's one is a total bore considering their look. Disappointed in Lisa Ajax coming back with something so cookie-cutter after the sheer wonder of My Heart Wants Me Dead, and I think Ben Ingrosso's got it sewn up by being the first thing with any real spark all evening, even though it sounds like Anton Ewald c. Begging doing Timberlake for Stars In Their Eyes.

Mariette's Sarek via Kygo chorus is spectacular (and by rights should make it in over Lisa Ajax's ABORTION) but I just don't know if she can make it past Lisa on the app vote.

I think I'd expect Mariette to get to the final over Lisa, it's not like she's actually one of the country's biggest stars, even though she's hyped up in that way by Scandipop et al, her last proper single before the Xmas song didn't chart at all domestically did it? And I guess app voters/Spotify users in Sweden are probably much of a muchness.

I can't believe Benjamin is a dead cert, it really sounds quite tired from that clip.

I could make a case for Lisa being DTG but I think with a song weaker than My Heart Wants Me Dead and huge challengers in Mariette and Benjamin, that could mean the difference between that and AC easily. I agree with Rich she isn't that big in Sweden that she's such a cert as the song doesn't sound exactly massive. This one does seem more wide open, I wouldn't be shocked at the last AC slot being taken by either Dismissed, Allyawan or Etzia depending on how the performances are. I'd assume Roger is the Charlotte of this heat but who knows with MF, you can never take that for granted

It did give a pretty big hint to Saraha being one of the big AC breakout hits though.

However I think the other bit of evidence that gives it a bit of credence is the online vote (3,333 votes cast):

1. Mariette - 36%
2. Benjamin Ingrosso - 26%
3. Lisa Ajax - 18%
4. Roger Pontare - 8%
5. Dismissed - 7%
6. Etzia - 3%
7. Allyawan - 2%

Obviously self-selecting, so not a perfect reflection - but if you expected any artist in this heat to have a motivated fanbase skewing an online vote, it wouldn't be Mariette.

Lisa sounds better in (practically) full, she has one of those voices where it's impossible not to fall in love I'd definitely agree with that top 3 but I hope it's Lisa and Mariette. I actually like Benjamin's song a lot more than I expected to but it's Anton Ewald does a Poundland Treasure by Bruno Mars

Roger's song is so much better than the first minute suggests, I wouldn't mind seeing it in AC at all, plus it would be a nice coup for the veteran acts. I think Dismissed and Roger will be fighting for 4th and 5th, unless the app vote goes against the latter.

1. Mariette - Epic, this could have been on Delta's Wings of the Wild album, it has a similar soundscape to Wings <333
2. Lisa - Still sounds really big to me, I'd love to see her go DTF tonight but I imagine she'll be 3rd and get there through AC instead
3. Etzia - Hot mess, can't wait to see how this is performed, badly I would imagine. Great song/melody though.
4. Roger - Actually unexpectedly anthemic!
5. Benjamin - Better than the clip suggested but Liam's on the money with his description, at least it's not tropical house which is what I was expecitng from him!
6. Dismissed - Just ok for me
7. Allyawan - boring dirge

I'm keeping this because it's so on point. I also hate it because of this.

Mariette, Roger and Dismissed all have EXQUISITE songs, not even sure which of the three I'd pick as my favourite. Lisa's seems to have a little bit more personality to it than My Heart Wants Me Dead, I'm therefore predicting it to not go direct in favour of Mariette and Benjamin.

The other two are clear dead on arrival fodder.

See, NOW I get what the buzz about Mariette earlier in the week was all about. Would not be surprised to see that be the Melodifestivalen winner!

Whichever one of Lisa/Benjamin goes to AC I think will actually end up doing better than the other one that goes DTF since I reckon both of them could/will gain momentum from being a big Spotify hit on the way.

1 - Mariette - right we've got a problem here because this is the sultry bewitching followup to My Heart Wants Me Dead that I'd come into tonight expecting from Lisa Ajax and yes it's f***ing superb but because Mariette's had to fill in for that DEAD-EYED AUTON I'm now missing the Euphoria to Don't Stop Believing's Heart Is Refusing Me that I was hoping for from Miss HOLLAND AND BARRETT here

2 - Etzia - the most hysterical MF carcrash since Alvaro Estrella looked at Moves Like Jagger and learned from the wrong half of the collaboration, wailing aimlessly for three minutes and thrusting incompetently in all directions. This is like an Onion parody of a feelgood banana republic summer hit recorded by one of its regimes torture victims and honestly I never want it to end

3 - Roger Pontare - that TANTALISING HINT of a key change at the end is a reminder to us all: times may come and times may go, but Roger will still be there to serve up the old time religion to us tired and weary fans beaten senseless by years of rock bands who couldn't care less about MF being given prime slots while those who live and breathe this bastion of Swedish light entertainment are callously tossed aside

4 - Benjamin Ingrosso - first Little Great Things now this. Why are the children of all our schlager icons so determined to shit on their mothers' legacies?! (I mean in this case chucking away his mum's name is the tell that he's doing it cos she's probably a dick but there are BIGGER BATTLES AT STAKE FFS)

5 - Lisa Ajax - I'm so furious at how generic this is that I can barely breathe to be honest

6 - Allyawan - I know Christer's trying to fulfil some kind of remit with this but what reality is there that involves anyone who cares about the Swedish hip hop underground staying in to watch TV on a Saturday night?

7 - dismissed - look if you're going to turn up looking like someone got lost in their mum's makeup box the least you can do is not sound like you got lost in her record collection too

I feel like I've rewinded a year and I'm staring directly in the face of Isa. That's going AC and up for a fight of getting out of it, at that.

But even though I'm disappointed, taking out my high hopes, it's the sort of song I will want to listen to much more, definitely got a replayability factor about it and I'm sure I'll come to love it.

It's no My Heart Wants Me Dead but I Don't Give A is still very much working for me, I really love her voice and the final minute or so is excellent. I actually really like the copious use of 'f***'' too because it doesn't just feel like token ''young girl SWEARING''

Pretty catchy but it was kind of Anton Ewald doing a slightly better version of a Boris Rene song. Not what I was expecting, isn't quite as good as I feel it could be but I don't begrudge it going to the final. I don't see it challenging for the win though.

Mariette and Roger were fantabulous, I'm really hoping as I'm watching this on catchup that Roger has gone somewhere because he DESERVES to, that was so rousing.

Etzia and Allyawan were both awful, Etzia could have had potential but had a really bad song and couldn't really perform and I'm really not here for Drake-itis (and low quality stuff at that) to spread into Melodifestivalen. It's telling that I didn't check the heart at all during the performance so I'm suddenly having fears it did much better than than it has any right to.

Dismissed were good, I guess I'm satisfied for Melfest rock now, not the best but not the worst either.

Lisa was fairly passable but generic.

Benjamin, it actually sounded better that I thought it might on record but live, is absolutely the worst thing ever, those reedy vocals are unbearable and yet are somehow so popular in music for whatever f***ing reason. REPRESSED MEMORIES of how awful Oscar Zia's Yes We Can and Anton Ewald's Begging were are coming right back. Please nip this f***ing thing in the bud right now. (I'm well aware I'm going to have to suffer seeing this in the final )

sidenote: Hasse is a legend, merely based on doing more sketch stuff tonight but I just really love everything he does. Swedish old men >>>>

Right two songs out at the first stage, I guess (although at a push I'd have preferred Etzia over Benjamin). This can't last.

Ah, Dismissed are through which means Roger's out. God, why does it have to be that CHILD knocking him out, that just makes it worse. I'm thinking that Roger's challenging Ace for my favourite from this year now. Still, at least I've found my villain for the year.
