Wizzard's Christmas song may have lost to Slade's back in 1973 but it has aged much better.

Biography

James Arthur was the victor of the British X Factor's ninth season in 2012, winning the public vote with a rendition of Shontelle's rousing ballad "Impossible." Born in Middlesbrough, England, Arthur had written and performed in various bands since the age of 15, as well as performing solo in pubs and bars in his hometown. Many early recordings of the singer/songwriter illustrate the pop/rock and hip-hop influences that helped to shape his unique voice and style. Before he appeared on The X Factor, Arthur made it into the final 200 contestants of the U.K.'s The Voice TV series in 2011, without managing to progress any further. A year later, he auditioned for The X Factor, where he sang judge Tulisa Contostavlos' song "Young" and subsequently made it through the boot-camp round and into the live shows.

From then on, Arthur showcased his considerable talents and slowly improved under the watchful eye of mentor Nicole Sherzinger. He was pitted against Jahméne Douglas and Christopher Maloney in the final round of the contest, where he impressed the audience with performances of Cy Grant's "Feeling Good," Bob Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love," and Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On." The final song of the evening -- the version of Shontelle's "Impossible" -- was released immediately after Arthur was announced as the winner and made it to number one in the U.K. and Ireland, while also charting across Europe. He then went on tour with the X Factor show, playing across the U.K. in huge, sold-out arenas such as Wembley and the Birmingham LG.

After his X Factor success, Arthur worked alongside singer/songwriter Labrinth and Graham Stack (JLS, Take That, Westlife) in preparation for his debut album. He put out the eponymous release later that year; the album featured "Impossible" and "Roses" (with Emeli Sandé), as well as follow-up singles "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You," "Recovery," and "Get Down." Arthur departed from Syco Music the following year and briefly returned to the scene with an independent release, the rap mixtape All the World's a Stage. The singer/songwriter made a return in 2016, signing a record deal with Columbia and issuing his second full-length effort, Back from the Edge. The stripped-down and reflective record was led by the singles "Say You Won't Let Go" and "Remember Who I Was." The next year, he featured on Rudimental's "Sun Comes Up" and issued his own solo single, "Naked."

Biography

Jonas Blue
London-based electronic dance producer Jonas Blue (born Guy James Robin in Essex, England) caught the attention of the industry with his reimagining of Tracy Chapman's 1988 hit "Fast Car." Adding a tropical house tint to the plaintive, bittersweet acoustic original, Blue enlisted the talents of young British singer Dakota, whose sultry vocals helped carry the song to the top of 17 international charts, including number one slots in Australia, Scotland, and both the U.K. and U.S. dance charts. In 2016 Blue released "Perfect Strangers," the follow-up to his global smash, featuring JP Cooper on vocals. The single landed in the Top Ten internationally and was followed by "By Your Side" with Raye. The following year he issued "Mama," his collaboration with Australian pop vocalist William Singe. That track would appear on Electronic Nature: The Mix 2017, a compilation of favorites from the DJ's own live sets. In addition to his own hit singles, the collection included his spins on songs by Galantis, Zedd, Ellie Goulding, Disclosure, and more. In 2018, Blue released the feel-good house-pop tune "Rise," which saw him collaborating with Nebraskan Vine stars/pop duo Jack & Jack. - iTunes

Liam Payne
Known for belonging to the internationally successful boy band One Direction, Liam Payne is an English singer/songwriter and pop artist. Hailing from Wolverhampton in the West Midlands of England, Payne was lauded for his eclectic vocal range and songwriting skills as one of the principal songwriters for the group. During the summer of 2014, he founded Hampton Music Limited, his own creative umbrella for future non-One Direction-related material. In May of 2017, Payne put out his first official single, "Strip That Down," a slow-burning, midtempo trap- and R&B-inspired cut he co-wrote with Ed Sheeran and producer Steve Mac. - iTunes

Lennon Stella
Lennon Stella and her younger sister Maisy Stella's joint journey to a musical career is full of Movie of the Week plot points and twists. The sisters are the daughters of Marylynne Stella and Brad Stella, who, as the Stellas, performed as a duo based out of Whitby, Ontario, Canada, coming close to the sun and a commercial career when they appeared on the second season of CMT's short-lived Can You Duet television series in 2009. The husband-and-wife team finished fourth, good enough to draw the attention of EMI Music Canada, which issued the self-titled The Stellas album in 2011. Veronica Bozza was a producer on the show, and struck by the couple's daughters, and particularly Maisy's natural flair for acting, she passed their names on to a casting director. Lennon and Maisy's young careers could have begun there, but tragedy struck. Bozza was murdered and it wasn't until two years later, when Marylynne was attending the trial of the men accused of killing Bozza, that a friend asked for permission to pass on Maisy's name to the casting director for a new television series called Nashville. The casting director turned out to be the same one Bozza had contacted two years earlier, and Maisy was called in to read. Since Lennon had helped Maisy rehearse her lines, she knew them, too, and both sisters were eventually hired to play the daughters of the Rayna James character, played in the show by Connie Britton. But there were problems. The girls were from Canada and didn't have work visas, and when petitioned, immigration officials demanded that Marylynne prove that the girls were legitimate singers and actors. Marylynne put up a YouTube page for the girls and included a hastily done video of Lennon and Maisy singing Robyn's "Call Your Girlfriend." Amazingly, the video went viral, gathering some two million views in a couple of days, which in turn landed the sisters on Good Morning America, pretty much taking care of the legitimacy problem. A single from the TV series, "Telescope," featuring the sisters, was released after the third episode of Nashville aired in the fall of 2012. - iTunes

Biography

Ariana Grande-Butera (born June 26, 1993), known as Ariana Grande (/ˌɑːriˈɑːnə ˈɡrɑːndeɪ/), is an American singer and actress. She began her career in the Broadway musical 13, before landing the role of Cat Valentine in the Nickelodeon television series Victorious in 2009. The show ended after four seasons, and Grande starred in the spinoff, Sam & Cat, which ended in 2014. She has also appeared in other theatre and television roles, and has lent her voice to animated television and films.

Grande's music career began with the soundtrack Music from Victorious (2011). She signed a recording contract with Republic Records and released her debut studio album, Yours Truly, in 2013, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. The album's lead single, "The Way", debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, with critics comparing her wide vocal range to that of Mariah Carey.

Grande's second studio album, My Everything (2014), debuted at number one in the US and charted in the top 10 in 24 other countries. With the lead single "Problem" and several others from that album, she was continuously in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 for 34 weeks and had the most top 10 singles of any artist in 2014. In 2015, Grande promoted My Everything with her first world tour, The Honeymoon Tour, and released a holiday EP, Christmas & Chill. In 2016, she released her third studio album, Dangerous Woman, and several songs from the album. The title track debuted at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Grande the first person in the history of that chart to have the lead single from each of her first three albums debut in the top 10. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. At one of her shows in Manchester, England, during her 2017 Dangerous Woman Tour, a suicide bombing killed 23 people and injured 119. Grande held a benefit concert in the city called One Love Manchester to honor and aid the victims.

As of June 2017, Grande's music videos had been viewed a total of more than eight billion times online. Her accolades include three American Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, three MTV Europe Music Awards and four Grammy Award nominations. All three of her albums have been certified platinum by the RIAA. She has actively supported a range of charities, and has a large following on social media; she is the second most followed person on Instagram. In 2016, Time named Grande one of the 100 most influential people in the world on their annual list.

I wish Empty Space and You Deserve Better were James' two top 10 hits for this year rather than the two he got instead, but ah well, I'm surprised he's still making the top 10 at all.
