12 chart-toppers in your 1976 list - I generally agree it wasn't a great year, remove Abba and big american hits and the UK music scene is pretty lacking, but there's still some gems in your list. Linda & The Funky Boys is an interesting choice, one I liked but which I havent heard in decades. Other tracks which could or should have topped my charts: Diana Ross, Tavares, Harpo, Dolly Parton, Joan Armatrading, Real Thing, earthband, Bee Gees....
10 chart-toppers in 1977, but others that could or should: Ram jam, Fleetwood Mac, Al Stewart, Carpenters, Julie Covington, Gladys Knight. 13 chart-toppers for 1978 and a leap in quality in the music scene, loads of tracks denied a top slot due to sheer competition: Sweet, Undertones, Donna Summer, Kate Bush x2, Marshall hain, Althia & Donna, Olivia, Jilted John, Samantha Sang, Odyssey, Blue Oyster Cult, Suzi Quatro, Boney M x2, Rose Royce. Only 8 chart-toppers for 1979, arguably the greatest year for pop music of that era, but then so much choice! Tracks that missed my top slot but deserved to top: XTC, Three Degrees, Sparks, Bowie, Gibson Brothers. More noticeable here is the missing Tragedy, Sunday Girl, my fave Lene Lovich Bird Song, several Police, Cars, Cliff's Talk Anymore, Boomtown Rats, Get It Right Next Time, Don't Bring Me Down, Confusion and many many more 1980: 7 chart-toppers, and a host that should have topped: Spacer, Upside Down, Queen, Crwon heights Affair,... but no John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Messages, Hot Choc, Crying, Night Boat To Cairo Top tracks over the years: certainly good cases for agreeing with: 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1966, 1969, 1974, 1977, 1990, 1991, 1994, Phew! Well done, a marathon review! |

Well done, a marathon review! There was a lot to get through! With '79 and '80 there was always going to be some glaring omissions, although some of the ones you mentioned I never really took to such as Tragedy and the Lennon singles. All the others however were on my initial longlist though. Thanks John |
