The New Ed with Andrea Sounds absolutely HORRENDOUS.

Also, How can he combine all the versions when they are called different things 'Perfect Duet' and 'Perfect Symphony' are not 'Perfect'.

What's the difference between that and Perfect (Remix) and Perfect (Acoustic)? You're getting upset about the lack of parentheses?

Posted by: GTH 15th December 2017, 07:48 AM

The new Perfect mix really is awful. Andrea Bocelli doesn’t fit with the song at all. Can’t see it making much difference for Ed.

All solid points.

I felt uncomfortable listening to it, Andrea Bocelli does not belong on this song. The production isn't bad, but I'd much prefer the Beyonce version vocals with the Anrea Bocelli version production laugh.gif

Posted by: mrbrightside 15th December 2017, 09:03 AM

It's just a joke how many versions of Perfect are being released. I've actually grown to like the original version of the song but lots of things put me off. Ed's insistence that it's the best song he's done (it's not), his desperation at getting Christmas number one, his pronounication of the word grass (okay I'll let him off with that last bit).

Weird he hasn't got a choir version yet......maybe saving that for next Christmas?

Posted by: Jonjo 15th December 2017, 09:34 AM

Wouldn't surprise me if Adele released 'Fastlove' on boxing day to commemorate the one year anniversary (which is essentially the day that news broke out of George's death last year).

^think you're right, but it's a pity it's not out this week, she could easily claim the Xmas #1 and beat the desperado aka Ed

In albums enimem is #1 on itunes now
listening to the album, the song with Pink (Need Me) sounds great on 1st listen, should have been the lead
much better than the Beyonce snoozefest

Because Adele is not shamelessly desperate for a Xmas #1 like Ed is smile.gif it's actually really annoying me now just how cynically and shamelessly he's achieved the Xmas #1. Andrea sounds so out of place on Perfect Symphony.

Is there a campaign to get 'Last Christmas' to #1?

Big Shaq's attempt at the Xmas #1 by releasing the "Christmas edition" of Man's Not Hot is ridiculously laughable! All he's basically done is add some bells to it laugh.gif does he really think it will go anywhere near #1?

New Anne-Marie is instantly better than 'Heavy' smile.gif

Loving the Pink/Eminem collab on first listen, agree that it should have been the lead instead of the Beyonce collab, even though it's more Pink feat. Eminem than Eminem feat. Pink lol.

I'm calling it right now though - 'River' will be the first new #1 of 2018!

The Andrea Bocelli version of "Perfect" is just... mellow.gif

Posted by: dancember 15th December 2017, 10:42 AM

Perfect Symphony up to #15. Ed's fans really will buy anything. mellow.gif

He could release Perfect Ding Dong featuring Crazy Frog and it would still make the iTunes top 10.

Also, AC/DC up to #24 with For Those About to Rock, presumably a chart campaign to commemorate the guitarist's death.

Plus Michael Ball/Alfie Boe up to #38 / Eminem/Ed up to #6.

Honestly, I wouldn't. I'd feel the same if it was Adele doing this!

I'd rather a song got to #1 on merit of the popularity of one version predominantly (i.e. the single version) rather than an additional two major duet versions giving it the (much needed) boost to be able to do it. Rockabye managed #1 "naturally" last year without the need of alternative versions to give it a leg up!

Ed's being very cynical and manipulating in order to achieve this Xmas #1. I mean, fair enough that he's exploited the chart rules to the extent that this is all above board, but I feel like there isn't much sense of achievement in him scoring this Xmas #1 via giving his fans two new versions to buy/stream, while the actual original single version of the song isn't doing all that much by itself (and funnily enough will be the version that this success is attributed to). That's just my opinion.

People moaning about Ed being desperate to be #1 would be lapping it up if it was their fave artist. I mean this is the forum who beg for their faves to promote on Loose Women etc, Ed has put out two remixes with 2 superstars of their own genre. I know which is more desperate.

He won't be credited, it's the same scenario. This'll still be "Ed Sheeran - Perfect" in the charts!

I hope Wham! can do it this week! Will download the song when I get home. Would love it to block Ed/Eminem(if he has a chance) and be a great tribute to George at the same time.

The campaign could get news coverage, or at least I hope it does!

Don't forget that being at the top (or near the top) of most of the streaming services Christmas playlists gives Mariah an advantage as well.

I have more of an issue with the possibility of an old song, that is technically the most listened-to, being deemed the most "popular" song of the week by reaching #1 on the singles chart, than anything Ed is doing.

Posted by: Scene 15th December 2017, 02:06 PM

We should all just be thankful that the X Factor monopoly over the Christmas Number One is long gone - not to mention those dire charity covers - and typical pop songs are back on top.

Mariah DESERVES no.1. A shame it never got to no.1 in the first place, just like the second biggest modern Xmas song, Christmas Time, Bells End. It's aboot teem we had the Xmas chart no.1 reflect that it is Xmas week for the majority of people.

It's the biggest now, not just modern but the biggest Christmas song.

Mariah at #1 would be great and all but bittersweet at that considering the whole Last Christmas campaign. Sure, Mariah at the top would be an amazing feat that has been a long time in the making but if Last Christmas ends up at #2 - blocked by Mariah - it would be devastating.

Posted by: Mr. C. Joel 15th December 2017, 02:13 PM

Fingers crossed the media take hold of it more and it gets mentioned on prime time TV.

Posted by: MARIAH. 15th December 2017, 02:28 PM

My gut feeling is that Mariah will be #3 in Christmas week, I don't think she's truly in contention any more. Ed Sheeran and his new version/Strictly promo is surely too strong to overcome, and then Wham! should have the edge over Mariah with their stronger downloads. Wham! aren't too far behind Mariah on streaming, so I guess with this campaign they could manage to overtake her there too? We shall see!

Posted by: dancember 15th December 2017, 02:48 PM

I'd agree that an Ed/Wham/Mariah top 3 in that order is most likely.

Eminem could break the top five too though it depends how big his streaming is. I doubt the charity/campaign singles (except Wham) will do anything, I can't see AC/DC fans rushing to stream the song so based on its current download sales it seems unlikely to make the top 40.

Posted by: MARIAH. 15th December 2017, 02:49 PM

Wham! very close to #1:

1.0000 Ed Sheeran & Beyoncé
0.9812 Wham!

but Eminem/Ed Sheeran is hot on their heels with 0.9343.

In the next update, could Eminem/Ed leapfrog over Wham!, while Ed/Bey falls to #3? drama.gif

Posted by: dancember 15th December 2017, 02:51 PM

Oh my, this may be closer than I thought.

If the Wham campaign gets media attention and/or celebrity promo (Ed to do a Justin Bieber and promote the competition seems unlikely though) it could very well make #1.

I hate any version of that 'Bring Me Sunshine' song, probably because it was on the P&O Ferries advert plus the Nescafe advert recently and I have seen the original comedy routine it was in and didn't find it funny sadly. I know this new version is for charity though but I wish they would have picked a better song.

It seems a little in poor taste for Ed Sheehan to be so desperate with all these versions to get number 1...... move aside, respect George and give Christmas number 1 to Wham..... an ACTUAL Christmas song.

How can you say the song isn't doing well by itself? It was firmly in the top 5/10 before the remixes and had loads of success when the album was released.

Also Little Mix who are seen as gods on here add rent a rappers to their single releases to gain more sales and streans but I bet it called clever when they do it.

The Ed/Beyoncé version provided the impetus to get him to #1, whereas the solo version didn't achieve that - not even with an X Factor performance. I assume if he'd not released these new versions, Perfect (solo) wouldn't be looking to be #1 this week and probably wouldn't have got there at all. "Firmly in the Top 5/10 with solo version" =/= "climbing to #1 and then vying for Christmas #1 thanks to new versions".

Looking SO unlikely now anything will beat Sheeran, Kworb just updated and he's selling bucket loads, only to gain after Strictly.

Posted by: Michael Bubré 15th December 2017, 05:08 PM

Lol, even as someone who was defending Ed the other week I have to admit that releasing a second new version just two weeks after the last one is getting a little excessive. Still can't really fault the guy for pulling out the stops to try to get the Xmas #1 though (and he surely would have done it even without releasing another new version anyway). I heard this Andrea version on Heart FM earlier, it's at least better than the Beyoncé version for me (I really like the orchestral instrumentation), although I think Andrea Bocelli's voice is probably... past its prime, to put it nicely.

Never been a huge fan of 'Last Christmas' but I do hope it charts higher than Mariah (which it looks like it actually might do, I'm surprised at how successful this download campaign has been as it seemed like the social media groups weren't that big) as a good tribute, plus it's at least slightly better than AIWFCIY (the two highest Christmas songs are basically my 2 least favourites of the standard classics though drama.gif) Count me surprised at how quickly Eminem/Ed has taken off as well, I didn't think there would be near this much hype for it after the underperformance of the lead single and other Ed features of late, although I have read that this is more like a 'Love The Way You Lie' kind of made-for-the-charts song and has been relatively well received compared to most of the rest of the album, plus I think it is already confirmed as the second single, so fair play... need to give it a listen ~

(basically I take back nearly everything I've posted in this thread the last couple of weeks, oops laugh.gif)

I think we must be due a long break from Ed Sheeran in the near future, I remember seeing an interview around the time 'Shape Of You' came out (IIRC) where he said that he took a year out of the public eye exactly because he didn't want to become too overexposed so it's not like he's not aware of the issue. Maybe he's just going all out in 2017 before vanishing next year? Lol ~ (either that or he's very rapidly changed his tune on that)

In chart terms the one thing Ed hadn’t really achieved was the Christmas number 1. Bar the long-term consecutive week type records of course.

I think the marketing strategy for "Perfect" has been clever because each version will appeal to different demographics. I don’t oppose artists doing this at all. I am not a fan of the song by any means but it’s no different to a remix. The record company just seem happy to throw more money at this one but considering Ed has made them so much money, it probably doesn’t make much difference!

This is a good point as well, I don't think Ed is really comparable to that. Loads of artists do that like Little Mix, it's a clever move to shift a single people otherwise might not buy as they have the album. But when it's ALONGSIDE the original, multiple versions with different artists to target as many demographics as possible I think it is a bit much. If he just released the Beyonce version as the single and the original didn't really get pushed, I'd look at it differently but he is doing EVERYTHING.

I have nothing against Ed Sheeran, I would obviously prefer and not be AS annoyed if it was a fave but it's a bit much whoever does it. I get that he just wants a Christmas number 1 to cement his legacy while he's at his peak, but wouldn't everyone like a Christmas number 1? laugh.gif

I think Ed would be firmly in contention for #1 just on sales and streams of the Beyonce version though. The combining of them all helps of course.

But what about my point that Mariah wouldn't be getting quite as many streams as she is, if she wasn't at the top of dozens of Christmas playlists right now?

"Concerned only with one's own interests and typically disregarding accepted standards in order to achieve them." - yeah, I'd say this description fits the Ed situation quite nicely. cool2.gif

Mariah is indeed top of some Christmas play lists (and there's actually a lot of high profile play lists where she isn't), but I imagine that the majority of people seeking out a Christmas play list would be aiming to listen to her song anyway, or at least happy to let it play. Of all the Christmas songs, it wouldn't surprise me if it's the top Christmas song to be actively searched for to specifically listen to it.

It's not as if Ed Sheeran isn't at the top/near the top of a lot of non-Christmas themed playlists, so it's a bit of a moot point? "Ed Sheeran wouldn't be getting quite as many streams as he is, if he wasn't at the top of a lot of playlists right now" = "Mariah wouldn't be getting quite as many streams as she is, if she wasn't at the top of dozens of Christmas playlists right now".

Agree with this.

On another note, I'm liking the new Eminem/Ed Sheeran song a lot more than I thought. Sounds a bit 2012, but that sound is almost nostalgic to me now. Big hit oncoming?

Are you reading a different forum? You’re making it up as you go along to make a point. Most of their latest feature have been met with hostility from their fans here, saying their desperate, or pointless or ‘ruin he best part of the song’ ... people were furious about Stormzy getting rid of the Motorbikes on Power and Machine Gun Nobody being there instead of Jesy’s middle 8.

Little Mix don’t repeatedly bring out multiple remixes of their song to manipulate their chart placing.

Power and NMSS with the featured rappers were treated as singles, whereas this Beyonce x Andrea thing are just remixes and aren’t proper singles. Bit of a difference.

If Ed added Beyonce before re-releasing Perfect and treated it as the proper single then I don’t think people would care about it. I’m mad because he released the Beyonce collab after the single version had done well. He’s so manipulative yet everyone sees him as such a humble man. Coward.

Its not really them its their management really. They are good enough singers so they could probably do lots of genres (Little Mix on a vocal trance track would be interesting ohmy.gif ), but the management prefer to keep them doing the safe generic stuff, maybe because of fear of lower chart positions if they do something too radical.

Posted by: dancember 15th December 2017, 11:11 PM

He used to be somewhat humble but I do think the fame has gone to his head.

Good on him for actually bothering to make a Christmas number one campaign, even if it comes across as desperate it's not often we see a big name artist making a proper challenge for it and maybe it'll encourage others to do the same next year (Adele?) and give us an exciting battle (and I suppose we could have a battle this week, you never know if Wham will pick up throughout the week).

Shame it's with such a dull song.

Posted by: Sqntq Clqus 15th December 2017, 11:16 PM

I think if we get midweeks, Wham! supports will see that he’s close so will stream more etc..

Yes its worth sending it to The Sun, they do seem to take more notice of the Christmas number 1 campaign than other papers, The Mirror might take notice of it but I don't know.

For Ed, yes, it’s transparent but it’s the music business, and in years to come Perfect will still be making him and his label money. You can’t fault him for that, it’s his job and he clearly enjoys the power and money. I think it’s just more that some people still hold him up as ‘real music’, when he’s just as much as part of the manufactured machine as everyone else in pop. He didn’t make and release this song because it’s an honest piece of musical art but something he knows will tap into the Christmas market and get played at every straight wedding for the next two years.

Looks like it’s boring Ed scoring the double again YAWN.

I really hope it's just his lyrics that gets used, it'd be ridiculous if he sang the next Bond theme too but it seems inevitable now as seemingly the only thing left he hasn't won is an Oscar.

I remember I was very surprised when 'A Team' became such a big hit, considering we hadn't had anything like it in the charts for a while (it was mostly EDM-pop tracks and pure pop back then doing well) and I mostly only heard it on radio 1 nighttime back then and assumed it wasn't going to be a hit.

Posted by: Nadolig Llawen! 18th December 2017, 05:53 PM

Say what you will about Sam Smith’s Bond theme, or his voice which I detest, but at least his voice had a lot of power in it Like is usually required for a Bond theme. Ed’s voice is extremely weak and would be terrible.

And his lyrics are probably beyond cringe.

Posted by: sammy01 18th December 2017, 08:21 PM

I've heard lots of unjust criticisms of Ed on these forums but saying he has a weak voice probably takes the biscuit.

Like Ed or not I didn't think anyone could argue about his voice, ot is full of soul, it is still his absolute selling point, like Adele that his songs feel heartfelt because of his voice.

Unlike Adele, he couldn’t hold a Bond theme. By weak, I didn’t mean poor, just not powerful. He just doesn’t have the lungs on him that Adele, Sam Smith and many other singers have.

Posted by: 777666jason 18th December 2017, 08:40 PM

Don’t get me wrong I don’t mind ed that much (well except perfect overkill) Galway girl and castle on the hill 2 of my favourite songs of the year but to have a James Bond song ready and waiting just in case is a bit vain isn’t it comes across like he’s entitled and if not chosen

Which again is weird because on celebrity juice he was so normal up for anything and I mean anything and a laugh

The excellent "Sorry" and to a lesser extent "What Do You Mean?" aside, I've found his output since pretty average - not necessarily bad though; his name certainly became a huge reason for them selling. Excluding "Despacito" from that seeing as it's not his song but his name did put it out there.

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 18th December 2017, 11:48 PM

I didn't mind his output but I certainly think it's a matter of opinion to say it's brill compared to Ed!

As for Justin his name didn't sell his previous albums material so the chart friendly quality def helped.

Oh no! Will probably go to #1 in the New Year. Its hardly a fresh sound, its the same style of minimal deep house that was around a few years ago with 'How Deep Is Your Love' etc. Dance is going round in circles too much these past few years mostly between deep house, tropical house and future bass.

We need a new revolution in chart dance I think, a new style to become a trend.

There are loads of dance genres in existence I just think we need one of them to become a new dance trend rather than continuing to go between future bass, tropical house and deep house.

I am not necessarily talking about a new genre, it can be a revived past genre.

I do appreciate some minimal bass house more now, DJ SKT - Take Me Away ft Rae listening to it now is fab when I disliked it before but I do think its time we moved on to a new dance trend or a revived dance trend rather than there mostly being the same trends we have had from the past few years, tropical house, future bass and deep/tech house in a seemingly endless cycle.

That is a massive boost , just needs some News coverage now....
Suspect it is not going to make much difference to its overall chart position though.

It could still yet make #1 next week (although unlikely, granted) as its streams will go through the roof this weekend.

There was a George Michael section on BBC news, hope that'll help boost Wham! as well. Would be amazing if they could get a massive last minute boost to get to #1.

But downloads are likely to fall back to normal from Friday too!

Did seem strange to publise the campaign this late in the week if earlier it could have had a better chance

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 20th December 2017, 10:23 PM

The twitter campaign has been going all week about how to download various versions and stream for 30 seconds with the volume up - they still seem to think they have a chance even tho I have been tweeting them the reality!

You make that sound like everyone should just give up... even if Last Christmas is unlikely to be the Christmas #1 there's still the week after (which will be heavily boosted with Christmas streaming) to find a new peak or even just to re-peak.

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 21st December 2017, 08:08 AM

True, but think they want the Christmas No1!

That's almost like popping a child's balloon with a pin and laughing at them.

ChristmasEve201 should be renamed the ChristmasEveGrinch. tongue.gif

Lol I only tweeted them once but it was just frustrating me that they didn't know how things work. John Mortimer seems to be involved again - they guy who manned the RAGE campaign. Now that was a Christmas chart battle - must have been 50 pages on the ITunes thread that week - even my mates were talking about it!!

Blimey! What has caused this late surge of support?

Posted by: Lenny 21st December 2017, 07:13 PM

I suppose seeing as sales are fairly low for this time of year, all it takes is 50,000 or so people to suddenly support Wham! by downloading a copy for them to actually surge to the top this week. That could happen in one day if there's enough promo. It's not outside the realms of possibility.

Quite shocked Gwen is at 43 and Sia is nowhere in sight! How'd it get that high - just airplay?

Sia's not that far behind - she's at #65 and likely just outside the top 50 on the combined versions chart posted above.

Gwen has a TV special called You Make It Feel Like Christmas on Sky Arts. I'm not sure whether it's aired already or if Dec 23rd is its first showing, but it's currently viewable on Now TV. Maybe that's helping her song to some extent?

Posted by: ManicKangaroo 21st December 2017, 11:25 PM

It was on Sky Arts on Sunday, and repeated on Sky One yesterday
