7th July 2003 saw 'Hollywood' released in the UK as the second single from 'American Life'. The song was chosen for its more commercial sound following the diverse reaction to 'American Life'; it's still critical of American culture, specifically the illusion of Hollywood and its superficiality, but musically fuses folk guitar with dance-pop elements and Madonna sings in a sweet, girly tone. Reviews were much improved on 'American Life', however its chart performance was less so, particularly in the US where it failed to chart upon the Billboard Hot 100, making it Madonna's first single not to chart since 'Burning Up'.

The music video saw Madonna collaborate again with Jean-Baptiste Mondino (who had previously directed the likes of 'Justify My Love' and 'Don't Tell Me'). It depicts classic Hollywood glamour and highlights the highs and lows of celebrity life, with many of the visuals paying homage to French photographer Guy Bourdin, which led to a lawsuit against Madonna by his son. The lawsuit was reported to be settled with $600,000.

20 years on, what are your thoughts and memories of 'Hollywood'?

It’s a great song, a great video and deserved a lot more in the USA. It should be a Madonna classic

Totally average for me. Neither as out there as a single as American Life nor as interesting or affecting as most of the album tracks

A banger! She made a real statement with this era but the world/US wasn't ready to hear it back then.
