BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ IS MILEY TIER 1 IN POP FEMALES STATUS?

Posted by: WallIsSoGood May 16 2017, 10:53 AM

I seen a conversation on ATRL where people claim that Miley is in the top tier of Female Pop stars! What do y'all think... is she in the same league as Rihanna etc and how would you rate the female pop stars?

Posted by: Joe. May 16 2017, 10:57 AM

I'd definitely say she was cementing herself as one of the "big pop girls", as they're commonly known.

These consist of (in varying levels of success) from Beyonce, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and possibly Ariana Grande. (Britney maybe too, but I think she might have expired when it comes to actually selling music)

I'd say people like Selena Gomez were just outside this status, as she doesn't have the instant selling power of any of the above, she still relies on having big radio hits, though her fanbase is still rapidly growing)

Posted by: WallIsSoGood May 16 2017, 11:02 AM

I'm not even sure on Lady Gaga (I know The Cure, Million Reasons and Perfect Illusion went #1 on iTunes) but her streaming has been very disappointing as has her chart runs within the latest campaign! I'm not overly sure on Katy Perry either, the meant to be lead single really did bomb worldwide and her fanbase seems to be declining at an alarming rate, I don't even know how her new album is going to perform.

Selena Gomez has always had good radio play and that's where Miley has always struggled, although Miley does much better in terms of sales.

I would say right now the main pop girls are Ariana, Miley, Taylor, Rihanna and Beyoncé!

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 May 16 2017, 11:46 AM

I'd say top tier is Beyoncé, Gaga, Katy, Rihanna and Taylor, with Miley on the next level down alongside Ariana and Selena. Katy and Gaga may have suffered declines but they're still MASSIVE names, two of the biggest on the planet!

Posted by: ~josh~ May 16 2017, 11:59 AM

Tier 1 for me consists of only Beyoncé, Rihanna & Taylor Swift (potentially Katy Perry depending on how her Witness era continues). For me, the likes of Gaga are on Tier 2 now as her relevance has clearly faded. She'd been on that Tier with the likes of Selena, Ariana, Madge, Miley. They're all big names but not guaranteed a hit or massive cultural relevance with their tracks like those in the top imo.

Posted by: Joe. May 16 2017, 12:08 PM

I definitely don't think Gaga is tier 2, she's one of the few female artists who can go straight to #1 around the world on iTunes with new releases. She's not as big as she used to be, sure, but she had her massive super bowl this year. And Joanne sold really well, especially given it's a left of centre release. It's the third highest selling female album of the past year and had the second highest opening sales. I'd say Gaga is still huge.

Katy is still a huge name too, even if Bon Appetit is a bit of a blip and Witness doesn't sell as well as her previous albums. Chained to the Rhythm was big around the world, even if it didn't live up to songs from 7 years ago. The only country it under-performed in was the US really.

Posted by: cqmerqn May 16 2017, 12:25 PM

I'd say she's tier 2.
----
IMO - Tier 1:
- Taylor Swift
- Lady Gaga
- Rihanna
- Beyoncé
- Katy Perry (just about)

Tier 2:
- Miley Cyrus
- Ariana Grande (almost top tier)
- Selena Gomez

Tier 3:
- Demi Lovato
- Ellie Goulding (maybe tier 2 but idk)
- Britney Spears
- Zara Larsson
- Lorde

I'm basing this on worldwide sales and impact in general. Katy Perry and Lady Gaga may not be selling loads anymore, but their impact is still very strong, especially Gaga.

Posted by: Joe. May 16 2017, 12:30 PM

I really don't know where I'd put Britney, she's more like a legacy act like Madonna now. Still a massive name but only capable of top 20 debuts.

Posted by: Joe. May 16 2017, 12:33 PM

I'd rank them like this

1) Beyonce
2) Taylor
3) Rihanna
4) Lady Gaga/Katy Perry
5) Ariana
6) Miley Cyrus/Selena
---
666) Jessie J

Gah, I always forget about Adele, though she doesn't market herself in the same way as the others, she's not a showy pop girl. But if we include her, she's probably at the top!

Posted by: burbe May 16 2017, 12:46 PM

I'd say Miley, Ariana and Selena are still just about 'second tier' but are probably quite close to being top tier soon enough. Particularly, Ariana. I think Miley could be tier 1 if this era is big and Selena probably needs to be bigger outside of North America to become top tier. She's still too localised in success.

I think Gaga and Katy Perry are in danger of dropping from Tier 1, but are probably still there for now. Beyonce, Rihanna and Taylor are definitely Tier 1.

Posted by: cqmerqn May 16 2017, 12:53 PM

I wouldn't say Beyoncé is the biggest pop girl in the world. Tbh atm with cultural impact in general I'd say Lady Gaga is the biggest.

You are joking right? Beyonce has had the biggest cultural impact easily?! laugh.gif

Posted by: Joe. May 16 2017, 01:07 PM

Yeah in terms of 2016/7 I'd say Beyonce is the joint biggest artist in the world alongside Bieber, Drake and Adele.

Has had, yeah. There's no denying that Beyonce has had the biggest cultural impact. But what I'm saying is is that at this moment in time, Lady Gaga is the biggest pop star. That's obviously just my personal opinion but the amount of praise she has had since Super Bowl has made her new era do a U-turn for the better. Beyonce and Rihanna aren't doing much at all atm so I think it's Gaga's moment.

In terms of celebrity status, they're Tier 1. Mileybwas inescapable during that period and Selena has like the Top 10 most liked Insta photos ever. However, I don't think either are Tier 1 in terms of music acts as I don't think, worldwide, they've had enough hits and I think people would only be able to name Wrecking Ball, Hands to Myself and maybe Party in the USA for their songs.

Posted by: WallIsSoGood May 16 2017, 01:18 PM

If we added Hannah Montana sales though :cheeseblock:

I just don't think any other act would have had the success Miley is currently having with 'Malibu' though, it was a massive risk considering Miley hasn't released a single on iTunes since 'Adore You' which was over 2 years ago? If Miley goes full pop then I can see her smashing streaming records worldwide! Miley has 2 songs out of the top five which were the most viewed on Vevo in 24 hours!

Posted by: WallIsSoGood May 16 2017, 01:21 PM

I would rank them

1. Beyoncé
2. Taylor Swift
3. Rihanna (Although Anti was her first number one US album wasn't it?)
4. Katy Perry
5. Miley / Ariana
6. Lady Gaga
7. Selena (it would be interesting to see how her new single does next week)

I wouldn't even put Britney in the top 10 either, I can't see her ever getting another top ten hit!

Posted by: WallIsSoGood May 16 2017, 01:24 PM

Miley actually has 7 top 3 albums to her name!

Posted by: cqmerqn May 16 2017, 01:25 PM

It will be interesting to see how Taylor Swift does with her next campaign. I reckon she'll have a #1 debut for sure.

I can't see Britney ever having a top 40 again, let alone top 10!

Posted by: WallIsSoGood May 16 2017, 01:27 PM

I'd actually say Taylor Swift is bigger than Beyoncé if you take album sales / single sales into consideration!

Posted by: Liаm May 16 2017, 01:47 PM

Tier 1: Beyonce (no question top of tier 1), Taylor, Gaga, Rihanna, Katy
Tier 2: Ariana, Miley, Selena

One flop single or era doesn't instantly take you down a tier, just like one solid era doesn't take you up, there's a lot more to take into consideration than sales. I think Miley is probably closest to tier 1 out of the ones I put n tier 2, due to her celebrity more than anything else but I think this will be a huge era commercially and will probably be like a mini Bieber sort of thing where people go from generally hating to loving her.

I definitely agree with this.

This is spot on.

Beyoncé is a weird one because people struggle looking beyond chart positions, but there is no denying her cultural impact over the past few years. Katy and Gaga are massive brands, even if they don't sell like they did when sales were everything. Beyonce, Taylor and Rihanna are the top three - although you could argue that Beyonce is off in her own lane with Adele.

Madonna and Britney have retired from this list now - they're with legacy acts unfortunately.

Miley is a weird one to judge because she takes long breaks, but she's definitely around Ariana and Selena. They're all big in their own ways.

Posted by: sticky icky trav May 16 2017, 03:35 PM

As much as I love Miley, I can't lie. She's definitely not top tier YET, but I have a feeling tihs album campaign will really determine it for the majority. I have a feeling if she continues to do well, this will really put her up there with today's top tier pop girls.

Posted by: Liаm May 16 2017, 03:46 PM

Madonna is sort of tierless for me, because nobody will ever really touch her legacy and it's always there, she's constantly the one for the newer big pop girls to be compared to.

And Britney has 9 top 3 albums, including her most recent album (not including the greatest hits albums)... but you're not adding her? laugh.gif

I shall do my tier later.

Posted by: Jonjo May 16 2017, 06:45 PM

Legacy: I.e. It doesn't matter whether they get chart success or not, they've cemented themselves as pop legends/manage to still create hype of some sort around their releases.
Madonna (top of the top); Britney; Beyonce; Mariah Carey

Tier 1:
Rihanna; Adele; Taylor Swift; Lady Gaga; Katy Perry

Tier 2:
Ariana Grande; Selena Gomez; Miley Cyrus

Tier 3:
Demi Lovato; Lana Del Rey; Lorde; Zara Larsson

Lol tier:
Christina Aguilera; Halsey

Rihanna is so, SO close to getting into the legacy tier right now.

Posted by: 360Jupiter May 27 2017, 12:40 PM

Beyonce, Rihanna and Taylor are their own tier in terms of power in selling music. (Tier 1+)

For terms of power and influence in general, it's them plus Gaga and Katy, and perhaps still Madonna, although she's on a knife edge now. (Tier 1)

Then below that, Ariana, although she's maybe on her way to moving up, and perhaps Nicki Minaj as well. Maybe Shakira, worldwide-wise. (Tier 2)

Below that, Miley and people like Selena. Demi may have briefly been there as well but I'd say she's fallen lower. I'd put Britney either here or halfway between it and the one above. (Tier 3)

Below that, people like Lana, Lorde, and Carly Rae. (Tier 4)

Then go down a long way and you have people like Iggy and Remy Ma.

EDIT: I actually hadn't read the whole thread when I posted this one and also agree with the post directly above this one.

On the topic of Miley exactly she's firmly tier 3 now and will be aiming for tier 2 with this next album, I feel.

This seems about right, although I would argue Beyonce and Adele aren't in Tier 1 or Legacy and just floating around in their own category.

Lana and Lorde are pretty much doing their own thing outside of the pop hierarchy as well.

Posted by: WallIsSoGood May 28 2017, 12:53 PM

I would actually put Zara Larsson on Tier 4, especially in the US! She's only really popular in the U.K and Sweden! I wouldn't even consider Carly o be tier three either!

Posted by: Joe. May 28 2017, 12:56 PM

Carly wishes she was close to being any tier

Posted by: Liаm May 28 2017, 01:04 PM

Carly is sadly her own gay icon but nobody else cares tier sad.gif

Posted by: WallIsSoGood May 28 2017, 01:11 PM

That new track went top 100 on iTunes though!!!!

Posted by: blacksquare May 28 2017, 01:54 PM

Carly is in the best tier with the Robyn's and Solange's of the industry etc - critical darling that doesn't get much mainstream love.

Posted by: cqmerqn May 28 2017, 05:42 PM

Carly could get another hit with the right song

Posted by: Euphorique May 29 2017, 05:17 PM

I agree with Jonjo's list, but I'd add Kylie to the legacy list too

Actually 'Unapologetic' was her first number one US album, but it still took ha 7 albums to get there.

Tbf, I put "legacy" just as a general name for the tier. I think all those in that tier are definitely in their own lanes and don't belong to a specific group.

Posted by: awardinary May 31 2017, 05:43 PM

No tiers available for Dua Lipa yet then? Nicki Minaj deserves some sort of mention too I feel for all her mainstream contributions of late.
