I feel like there was a lot of push for Swedish influence on the charts during the rise of Spotify, helped also by it naturally being disproportionately popular there, which has since faded quite a bit* so the same momentum just isn't there anymore

*The difference between where Sweden ranks on early streaming hits and recent streaming hits on kworb's site (which lists countries left to right based on total streams) shows how far it's fallen
To add to that, in 2013-2014 it was possible for songs that were only charting in the Nordic countries to make the global top 50 - for example Contiez - Trumpsta (Djuro Remix), Nico & Vinz - Am I Wrong (in 2013, when they were known as 'Envy', before the song became an international hit in 2014), Ace Wilder - Busy Doin' Nothin' and AronChupa - I'm An Albatraoz (also before becoming an international hit). (The numbers even claim 'Trumpsta' and 'Am I Wrong' had ~99.9% of their streams coming from Sweden/Norway/Denmark/Finland at the time, but there may be some consistency issue because 'Busy Doin' Nothin'' has higher streams shown for Sweden alone than worldwide.) Right now, from the latest weekly charts, if the same song was #1 in all 4 of those countries, it would have 3.4m plays, which is only 68% of what would be needed to make the global top 200. (And none of those songs linked were close to being #1 in all 4 - 'Trumpsta' for example was #9/#13/#17/#20 when it reached #31 worldwide in 2013, which would currently make 1.42m plays [interestingly only slightly more than the 1.29m at the time], 29% the level of global #200.)

Also of note though is that the Swedish charts were much less localised back then than now - if you look at the top 40 of this week in 2014, there were only 2 non-English songs, whereas now, it's around 24/40 non-English.

Now that you mention it, I believe it was I'm An Albatraoz being in the global Spotify chart in October 2014 that led me to listen to it then! I think a lot of other people would have discovered it the same way, and it makes me wonder if it was just being in the right place at the right time that it even became a hit here at all. I think there might have even been a similar situation for Kygo's breakthrough with Firestone which was around the same time, that was in the global chart in late 2014 after doing very well in Scandinavia, but of course it had such a slow climb in the UK!

I loved I'm An Albatraoz and i'm pretty sure I only discovered it through the global Top 50 on Spotify too. Ditto Firestone. 2014 was the year I first signed up for Spotify premium. laugh.gif

Actually, is it fair to say Will.I.Am?

He was basically unstoppable for quite some time right up until the streaming era.

He's only released 1 song in the streaming era, and that got to #21.

He followed that one up with "Fiyah" in 2017, by which point he had truly lost all his chart relevance as that was a big big flop.
Then he got Black Eyed Peas back together (minus Fergie) and they're still yet to have had a UK hit since although their Latin market pandering seems to have worked for them in those countries.

That's a fairly good "example" actually, although I feel like throughout 2012/2013 his success had declined rapidly but he did manage one last top 5 hit at the exact time streaming was introduced and hasn't been seen in the top 40 since.

I feel his shelf life was coming to an end anyway around that time but would have thought he could have had a few big hits in the streaming hits.

I wouldn't say any of the newer artists (by that I mean from the last 15 years or so) have been lost to streaming. I remember in 2010 being called old fashioned for buying a CD because everyone was using Spotify by then. Those who have faded away were probably going to anyway.

It would be more logical for artists who had their heyday before streaming existed to be lost to streaming. There's plenty of acts who had successful chart careers in the 20th century who are still releasing new music that doesn't have a hope in hell of making the Top 40, but then these artists Top 40 careers were over before streaming counted.

As for the Swedish influence, that's probably true but as songwriters the Swedes ruled the pop charts long before Spotify.

RITMO by Black Eyed Peas was #50 in the US year-end chart last year, which is quite good.

For comparison it's about the same as where Ain't It Different and Better Off Without You were in the UK last year. So I don't think it could have done that bad on streaming if it charted so well. I know it's another country but it shows that I don't think it's streaming as a chart mechanic which hurt them.

Scream and Shout was also the 25th most streamed song of the year in 2013 in the UK: https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/t...-of-2013__3666/

This also demonstrates a point I made earlier about alternative songs doing really well on streaming in the early days. Bastille at #2!

Alternative and rock are coming back, Machine Gun Kelly is almost top 20 in the US and Glass Animals is charting in the UK and the US.

The Glass Animals song is not even slightly alternative. Most of their other songs are but this one is a straight up pop song. No one would bat an eyelid if you said it was by Maroon 5.

Machine Gun Kelly, I will grant. His success with going down the pop punk direction has been pretty impressive (and he's a better pop punk artist than he ever was a rapper so I'm down for it).

I agree with the above post, I've only ever heard one Glass Animals song and to me it's pop music with guitars. Alternative and rock probably will make a come back one day, I remember at the turn of the century it was said that nobody wants to play the guitar anymore they want to be DJs. Then 5 years later the charts were full of guitar bands.

He's definitely started some sort of trend, there's so many doing that sort of sound now (often with Travis Barker) - even Avril Lavigne's returning to pop-punk with her new album.

(and to varying degrees of quality, Trippie Redd and Lilhuddy's have both been pleasant surprises)
