17. Come Together (1969) / Abbey Road
4/19 votes

Well isn't this a shocker! Missing the top 15 by a couple of spots is the other half of the 'Something' / 'Come Together' double A-side, departing just after 'Something' did. 'Come Together' is the opening track on 'Abbey Road' and is sung by John Lennon. The lyrics are complete nonsense, but there was meaning behind the song title, as I recently learned in one of Radio 2's Beatles shows to commemorate 50 years of 'Abbey Road'. Timothy Leary approached Lennon and asked him to write a song to use for his campaign for governor of California. He used the expression 'come together', so Lennon attempted to write it around that, but he could not come up with a suitable campaign song - so the idea was shelved. He came back to this 'Come Together' title later and wrote the gobbledegook lyrics we now know without any pressure of it being for a political campaign. The heavy bass riff and other impressive production skills give the song more of a credible feel in amongst such strange lyrics. The accompanying psychedelic promotional video was just as random - it was a cartoon version of the band in various situations, such as spinning in tea cups and re-creating the front of the 'Abbey Road' cover. The background slowly flashes the entire time, so not one for those sensitive to that kind of thing. 'Come Together' was not only recorded by The Beatles but by several other famous acts too - Michael Jackson and Aerosmith are amongst those who covered it. This is the end of the road for 'Abbey Road's representation in the '1' survivor.

I am SHOCKED and APPALLED that 'Come Together' has departed so early cry.gif at least with 'Something' I knew that was coming soon, with it being up for the chop before, but this exit was sprung on us out of nowhere! I'm gutted that both of these high quality 'Abbey Road' songs have left us in succession. 'Come Together' is such an awesome start to the album, I really love the instrumentation on it in particular.

'We Can Work It Out' again ~

Again for me, We Can Work It Out.

I do love Stevie Wonder's version though.

Come Together is fantastic so that's a disappointing result.

How on earth is ‘Come Together’ out already??? One of their best!

Voted ‘Help’ to go next

I'm still voting for Can't Buy Me Love.

OK, we're not going so well here, Something going was pretty bad, but Come Together is a well-deserved classic with some excellent guitar work. If we're going for the more overrated Beatles classics, why not Hey Jude? (Don't worry I'm not going for that yet or any time soon but it MAY come to it, there's just been one too many bad singalongs for that one).

EARLY BEATLES SONGS TO GO (in this case, Can't Buy Me Love x)

Yes! Come Together gone. Voted Hello, Goodbye this time.

Posted by: Popchartfreak Nov 3 2019, 05:39 PM

It's the oldest 4 that need to go next, so voting tactically to keep newer tracks in tongue.gif laugh.gif I'm not fussed what order they go out, but clearly Can't Buy Me Love is heading for the chop soon anyway.... so the record my dad bought (along with I Want To Hold Your Hand) that has a fab movie moment in A Hard Day's Night that I saw at the cinema, has to get the vote - yes I love the later stuff even more than early kiddie nostalgia love... Doh!

The production on it is fab, and it sounds more 70's than 60's, but it's not even in my top 5 fave tracks on Abbey Road - if we were voting tracks in the general public, Here Comes The Sun would be still in and may even hypothetically win....! smile.gif

All You Need is Love - one of their worst!

For sure wub.gif I really wish 'Here Comes The Sun' had been released as a single, I'm sure that would've been another easy #1 for them. I would definitely be rooting for it in this poll if that had happened! Since it did not I am instead throwing all support behind 'Eleanor Rigby'.

Here Comes The Sun is fab. Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel's 1976 hit version is great too.

oh come on, that's one of their better songs.

I'll go Can't Buy Me Love too

I love I Feel Fine. It'd be worth keeping in for that feedback (or whatever they call it) note at the beginning.
