THE COI EOY TOP 40 - 2018
My end of year top 40 will be counted down on this thread! Because my personal chart only started in August, this is just based on my most streamed tracks of the year (which I think accurately represents which songs I loved most this year anyway). If you've followed the personal chart you may have an idea what sort of stuff is to follow, it's a list that will include the likes of Alan Walker, Drake, Martin Garrix, Bring Me The Horizon, Post Malone, Arctic Monkeys, Manic Street Preachers and Ariana Grande to name a few!
Very excited for this!
Hope there'll be some stuff I like in here!
Let's get straight into it then!
40. Architects - Doomsday
We begin with the heaviest song of the top 40, from Brighton metalcore band Architects. This was the first single they released after their guitarist Tom Searle died in 2016, it came out in September 2017 and was playlisted by Radio 1 later that autumn, where I started to get used to this track. It grew with every listen which gave it a strong start during the first couple of months in 2018, then receiving another few plays near the end of the year too as the band released their eighth studio album Holy Hell in November, where this is the penultimate track.
39. A$AP Rocky feat. Skepta - Praise The Lord (Da Shine)
Two pretty big rappers collaborated on this song which went on to become the 84th best selling single in the UK this year. A catchy chorus combined with a pretty good use of panpipes helped it do so well, and I like all the references to DMX's classic Who We Be as well.
38. Visions of Atlantis - The Deep & The Dark
The next song is from Austrian band Visions of Atlantis, and this is the title track to the album they released in February 2018 - not that I was aware of it at the time as the track came to this site's attention by appearing in the final of BJSC 109 for Cor Lupus, where it only finished 31st out of 39. It deserved so much better.
Great to see Praise The Lord (Da Shine) here. Brilliant collaboration and I was delighted to see that it gave Rocky his first proper hit in the UK.
The Deep and the Dark is one of the better Euro-rock songs of that sort I've heard, if you only hear a few they sound quite innovative but after a while they all do sound a bit the same sadly
37. El Profesor - Bella Ciao (HUGEL Remix)
Here we have a fairly big hit in Europe that never really made it to the UK, finishing as the sixth best selling single of the year in Germany! 'Bella Ciao' was originally an Italian folk song from the first half of the 20th century and used as a 'hymn of freedom', but bizarrely it became used in about ten other remakes in 2018 including versions by the likes of Steve Aoki, Alok, Maître Gims and Hardwell as well as this remix by Hugel, which all started after it was used in a Spanish TV series. This one remains my favourite remix of the lot.
36. Drake - Diplomatic Immunity
Drake had a pretty successful 2018, and it started with the Scary Hours EP he released in January, which contained this and some other song that no one has heard of called God's Plan. Anyway for the first couple of weeks after the EP came out I actually preferred this song! Despite there being an incredible 25 songs on his album Scorpion which came out in the summer, there somehow still wasn't any space for this one.
35. Twenty One Pilots - Jumpsuit
Twenty One Pilots came back after basically disappearing for over a year with this song coming out in July. This was the first single released from their album Trench, and I would still say it's the best song on the album too. Although it only managed to reach number 50 in the UK chart, it did become successful in some ways after winning the public vote for Hottest Record of the Year for Annie Mac's show on BBC Radio 1.
34. W&W & Darren Styles feat. Giin - Long Way Down
Another BJSC discovery here! Although I was already aware of W&W, this song only came to my attention through BJSC 108 (before I even joined the contest!) where it finished in fifth place for Cowtermont. This track has so much energy in it!
33. Big Shaq - Man's Not Hot
We have a song carried over from 2017 here. I was already aware of Shaq (aka comedian Michael Dapaah) before the actual song was released thanks to his appearance on Charlie Sloth's Fire In The Booth, which went viral pretty quickly. I couldn't believe it when Man's Not Hot actually made it into the UK chart, and following the slow and steady rise to its eventual peak at number three in January 2018 (a remarkably long time for a novelty song to stay in the chart these days - although Baby Shark might have something to say about that now!) was incredible. There's something truly remarkable about how a song that is basically parodying UK grime ended up becoming one that received a lot of support from UK grime fans! This song was the subject of many memes for many months as well. I just wish Big Shaq made a better follow-up as Man Don't Dance was actually terrible.
Man Don't Dance really was the disappointment of the century.. but at least Man's Not Hot was great!
Diplomatic Immunity is quite an odd choice of Drake fave, didn't get much enjoyment from it after the first 2 weeks. I guess there'll be more Drake to come?
I also charted Bella Ciao and Long Way Down, decent tunes.
Diplomatic Immunity - I was enjoying this on a par with God's Plan when they were first released but this hasn't held up that well throughout the year for me. I've hardly listened to it at all for a few months.
It is crazy to think about just how huge Man's Not Hot actually was. I don't think I even bothered listening to the follow-up at all though.
32. Ava Max - Sweet But Psycho
This was pretty big across Europe for the last few months of the year and took so long to make it to the UK, but it eventually it got there and is now the official UK number one! Well deserved debut hit for Ava Max, it'll be interesting to see if she can do a good follow-up in 2019.
31. Kygo feat. Sandro Cavazza - Happy Now
Another one that has been big in Scandinavia over the last couple of months, except this one hasn't made it to UK number one. Instead it's hovering around at the lower end of the Spotify top 200 and is on Radio 2's playlist.
I've been a fan of Kygo right since he made it to Norwegian number one with his remix of Seinabo Sey's Younger in 2014, and I loved Firestone even more - I remember being really happy just to see it enter the UK top 100 in January 2015! It had such a slow climb up the UK charts but it eventually made it into the top ten in April. This year he's not done so well in the UK but I hope this song can get him back up there.
30. Armin van Buuren vs. Shapov - Our Origin
This is probably my favourite Armin van Buuren offering since Ping Pong in 2014! A really good trance song from the Dutch DJ here, who you might remember from the 2013 hit This Is What It Feels Like which I also loved.
Great to see Our Origin and Happy Now make it!
Because of my point system Happy Now just missed out my top 250 but it will probably finish very high in the 2019 EOY! Really love it.
omg Long Way Down yasssss
What a random collection of songs Happy Now is another great piece from Kygo, I don't think I've heard any other remixes of Bella Ciao other than this one but this one is a great swing-dance piece!
Nice seeing "Praise The Lord (Da Shine)", "Bella Ciao (HUGEL Remix)", "Jumpsuit", "Man's Not Hot", "Sweet But Psycho" and "Happy Now" here!
29. Dean Lewis - Be Alright
Here is the debut international hit for Australian singer-songwriter Dean Lewis, and I predict it could become his only proper hit in the UK as it's hard to follow up well-written songs like this. Although this was still robbed of a place in the UK top ten, less than 400 sales behind George Ezra's Shotgun which was re-entering the top ten for its 15th week there!
28. RÜFÜS DU SOL - Lost In My Mind
Continuing the Australian theme, alternative dance trio RÜFÜS (who changed their name to RÜFÜS DU SOL a few months before this was released ) are here with Lost In My Mind, a beautiful song on escapism which appeared on their third album Solace.
Nice to see "Be Alright" here, surprisingly doing really well in Germany.
Be Alright is a lovely song really. I can't understand his haters.
27. Ariana Grande - No Tears Left To Cry
This was the first (and also my favourite) song Ariana released since the tragic events in Manchester the previous year, which the music video also includes a subtle tribute to at the end. A song with meaning and optimism as well as generally being a pretty good bop. This has now probably made it into my top five Ariana Grande songs ever, which is saying a lot when you remember the likes of Into You, Break Free and One Last Time.
26. AWS - Viszlát Nyár
Here we have the one and only entry from this year's Eurovision Song Contest in my top 40. I was impressed by this right when I first heard it as it really stood out from the rest of that semi-final! This was the entry from Hungary and I was so happy when this went through to the final! Even though it's a Hungarian rock entry for Eurovision, I still listen to this one quite often!
IT DOESN'T MATTER PUT THE PHOOOOOOOOOONE AWAYYYYY I like that song if you hadn't guessed.
Viszlat Nyar was probably mid-table for me in terms of Eurovision entries but it certainly was unique, it made my weekly Top 40 purely due to the fact that I'd forgotten to add Nova Deca so probably a bonus for this.
Sweet But Psycho is still growing on me. Glad it's been a massive hit.
So happy to see No Tears Left To Cry here. It felt like such an event when it was released and it certainly did not disappoint.
25. Dave - Hangman
Dave has had a pretty successful 12 months - so much so that even though this was a top 40 hit, it's still probably one of his less remembered songs! With the likes of No Words and Funky Friday becoming so huge (the latter even became a UK number one!), it's easy to forget this. The difference between those and Hangman is that those are a lot more upbeat and fun whereas this showed a much more serious side, and the lyrics are rather well-written and thought-provoking.
the lyrics I remember being rather good but the song as a whole was very forgettable, doesn't have the appeal that Funky Friday and No Words do.
24. Post Malone - Better Now
This is Post Malone's first appearance in my top 40 of the year, with another still to come. However, Better Now is the only one to feature from the Beerbongs & Bentleys album he released in 2018 (although Rockstar only just missed out on a second year in my EOY top 40), with the other being carried over from Stoney. This was a pretty big hit over the summer and for months I couldn't get enough of it.
23. Claudia Cazacu & Audrey Gallagher - Freefalling
Romanian DJ Claudia Cazacu teamed up with Audrey Gallagher for this all-female euphoric trance banger! I've listened to this many times since discovering it in 2016 and it enjoyed a revival in my chart after I chose this as my Buzzjack Song Contest debut entry for Arcodesia. The song ended up qualifying for the final, much to my delight, and finished 25th out of 39.
Ooh what a marvellous 1-2 punch that is *.* Post Malone rarely, if ever (I still haven't brought myself to listen to the country stuff okay) puts a foot wrong for me so 'Better Now' was yet another great release from him, I wasn't surprised in the slightest to see it catching on so much as it's a very accessible earworm! Then 'Freefalling' was the perfect debut for Arcodesia, it's the kind of dance that's exactly up my street, ever so dreamy <3
Other favourites so far: 'Praise The Lord (Da Shine)', 'The Deep & The Dark', 'Jumpsuit', 'Long Way Down', 'Sweet But Psycho', 'Lost In My Mind' + 'no tears left to cry'
Yeah I remember when Hangman came out that it wasn't your usual UK-rap lyrics! I think the whole 'Hangman' pun is quite inspired.
22. Au/Ra & CamelPhat - Panic Room
The superb production from CamelPhat combined with the haunting vocals of Au/Ra, a 16-year-old singer-songwriter(!), made this a really great track! I never thought this would become such a hit but it did, staying in the UK top 40 for 11 weeks!
'Panic Room' was my most played song of 2018 and the longest runner in my top 40 so I wholeheartedly approve of its inclusion here I agree that the production is superb, it really elevates the original, as much as I like Au/Ra's contribution too. One of the best dance acts around right now!
21. Muse - The Dark Side
Here we have the one and only appearance that Muse have this year. If my EOY records went back that far, Muse would have featured in my EOY top 40 in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2016 as well, so it's rather clear that they are one of my favourite bands of all time. With another new album out this year, Simulation Theory, more tracks joined my weekly chart, although I must admit I think this album is nowhere near as good as most of their previous albums were. The album track Propaganda is pretty good, Something Human was good too, but the only one that makes it into my top 40 of the year is The Dark Side, the fourth single from the album.
Panic Room One of my top faves of the year.
Not so fussed on Muse these days, they're well past their peak for me.
20. Portugal. The Man - Feel It Still
One of the more unlikely UK chart smashes of 2018, Portugal. The Man take a place in my top twenty of the year. This would be a lot higher too if it wasn't such a slow burner that I was already starting to get bored of it by the time it became massive here. Having first heard the track in March 2017 after being a fan of 'Smile' from their previous album Evil Friends in 2013, I supported 'Feel It Still' heavily since it entered the UK top 100 in August - although it took until February for it to reach the top ten! This was already enough to see it make my top 50 of 2017, but it goes even higher this year. I feel this is destined to become a one hit wonder for them though.
I thought I was ahead of the game when I discovered this in the December before it blew up over here
Fantastic track! I do prefer Live In the Moment, but this is still one of their best.
19. Monoral - Kiri
Here we have Japanese band Monoral, with a song that I discovered in late 2016/early 2017 that I was obsessed with for a few months - and even put in my BJSC potentials list - which ended up being entered into the contest anyway thanks to Jupiterdonia! Fortunately the track qualified for the final, and went on to finish 24th in BJSC 109 - one place above my own debut entry by Claudia Cazacu!
18. Dave feat. Fredo - Funky Friday
After being disappointed by this on first listen, Funky Friday turned out to be a massive grower for me as well as becoming a much deserved UK number one for Dave! This is his second and final appearance in my EOY top 40 after Hangman was at #25.
17. Super8 & Tab feat. Hero Baldwin - Burn
We have another BJSC entry here, this time from South Danaelanda (as it was known at the time), who finished 21st with this in BJSC 109! The Finnish trance duo's tune entered my personal chart before even being announced as an entry after I discovered it through Thermo's Hot Hits, and even went on to finish higher in my EOY chart than his!
Enjoyed 'Burn' from South Danaelanda when this was entered.
16. pg.lost - Terrain
And here's the highest of the BJSC entries in my EOY chart. This wonderful piece of Swedish post-rock that I already played loads in 2016 enjoyed a 're-release' in my personal chart as it became Arcodesia's highest placed entry to date when it finished 11th in BJSC 110.
15. Freya Ridings - Lost Without You
Actually come to think of it, this was entered into BJSC, although it was a live version and I hadn't joined BJSC at that time so wasn't really aware. I came to discover this beautiful track simply from its continued presence in the UK top 100 before it eventually made the top 40 and then the top ten. Nothing less than what this emotional track deserves.
14. K-391 feat. Alan Walker, Julie Bergan & Seungri - Ignite
This is a fantastic collaboration between three great Norwegian artists (and also a feature from Seungri, who was in a K-pop group at the time), a really good dance track.
13. Marshmello & Bastille - Happier
The unlikely team-up between American DJ Marshmello and British band Bastille was a big success, reaching number two in the UK and also spending two weeks at the top of my personal chart in October.
12. Thom Yorke - Suspirium
Radiohead's Thom Yorke put this beautiful track out in the autumn for the film Suspiria, both the vocals and the piano work on here are great!
11. Drake - Emotionless
It wasn't released as a single, yet it still made the top five in the UK chart on the week that Drake's album Scorpion was released, before completely disappearing the following week to allow In My Feelings to enter under the OCC's rule of three songs per artist. Still, it really caught my attention with the Mariah sample and good lyrics.
10. Martin Garrix & Pierce Fulton feat. Mike Shinoda - Waiting For Tomorrow
The top ten begins with a track that was only released in October! Having loved both Martin Garrix and Mike Shinoda (from Linkin Park) for years, I was looking forward to this being the final track released from Garrix's BYLAW EP, and it did not disappoint, becoming a #1 in my personal chart for three weeks, and spending the rest of the year in the top five.
9. Post Malone - I Fall Apart
Back from the start of the year (and even the end of 2017!), this very emotional track became a moderate-sized hit for Post Malone from his album Stoney, and by far my favourite song on it.
8. Arctic Monkeys - Four Out Of Five
The highly anticipated return of Arctic Monkeys with their Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino album was met with a bit of disappointment from some, but one thing most can agree on is that this single was definitely the highlight from it!
Not even FOOF did it for me, everything I heard from their latest album was just boring. Says it all that it's long gone from the Top 100 whilst AM and their debut continue to chart.
IFA has to be my fave of your top 10 so far, a good effort from Post Malone. That Martin Garrix song is decent too but not one of my faves of his.
6. Bring Me The Horizon - Mantra
Bring Me The Horizon's first new material for three years did not disappoint. It spent four weeks at number one in my personal chart in September to early October, and it's still my favourite song on the album.
5. Dynoro & Gigi D'Agostino - In My Mind
This surprise dance hit over the autumn, which was also Germany's best selling single of the year, has finished in my top five of the year despite never going to number one in my personal chart! Ultimately the Lithuanian and Italian DJs finish higher with this in the EOY than the song that kept it off the top spot - that was Mantra, just one position below it!
4. Juice WRLD - Lucid Dreams
My perhaps unexpected song of the summer was this breakthrough hit for US rapper Juice WRLD! This song is also one of many that sample Shape of My Heart by Sting. The frustration of watching Lucid Dreams miss the UK top ten week after week after week (having a chart run of 12-12-11-11-11 at one point) was horrible, but it finally managed to sneak in for one week at number ten at the end of August, on its 12th week in the top 40. I was so relieved.
3. Manic Street Preachers - International Blue
The lead single from the Welsh band's thirteenth (!) album Resistance Is Futile was the clear highlight too, including a stunning riff that reminded many of their 1992 hit Motorcycle Emptiness. It was great to see this performed live this year as well!
Suspirium and Mantra
Also, beat ya
