BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Artists beginning with Lil'

Posted by: Mart!n May 9 2020, 12:42 PM

I've seen a lot of artists lately beginning with Lil', they seem to be sprouting a lot of new artists beginning with Lil', got me thinking the other day of others.

Lil' Baby
Lil' Nas

etc etc etc

Anymore... laugh.gif

You've only just noticed this in the last 20+ years? laugh.gif

Posted by: Klumzeased* May 9 2020, 12:46 PM

Lil Wayne is the original! I wonder how many will change their name in a few years time laugh.gif

I also find it confusing we have Lil Baby and DaBaby, why do you want to be baby so much???

Didn't we have a poll to decide our favourite 'Lil' artist a year or so back?

Lil Louis. Had a number 2 hit with 'French Kiss' in 1989. It was featured on the Top Of The Pops edition from 1989 that was shown last night on BBC4.

Given that rap artists usually have big egos or pretend so in their music, it's a but suprising that there are more artists using Lil' in their monikers than Big.

Let’s give Lil Dicky some love

I remember Lil Louis was probably the first artist using Lil, now it seems to have developed to a higher level of artists using that term.

The only 'Lil' artist I know of who ended up removing it from their name was (Lil) Bow Wow thinking.gif It's hard to imagine many of their names not sounding weird without the Lil laugh.gif

'Baby' is a very overused word in rap names too, those are the two biggest of course but there are a ton more moderately popular Baby X / X Baby rappers around at the moment.

It’s sad I know but if see an artist that starts with ‘Lil’ I always know their music is not for me.

I believe Lil Toenail is supposed to be a thing.

That's the one I thought of too! One other is Lil Boosie (who charted in the US a few times in 2006-2008, including as a feature on Webbie's top 10 hit 'Independent'), who later changed his name to Boosie Badazz, but that's pretty low profile (although apparently he had a #3 album in the US in 2015 post-name change).

There's also Young Jeezy becoming Jeezy, in similar words.

Lil' Durk a new one on me, just imagine an artist called Durk without Lil' laugh.gif

Posted by: Bré May 9 2020, 01:15 PM

Oh yes I did know about Boosie Badazz as well! (Though I don't think I have ever heard a song by him so he's not an artist I think about much).

I think a lot of the Lil artists are so named because they're short which isn't something that necessarily goes away with age. Young X rappers on the other hand it does seem to make less sense to keep the name in the long run (although again I can't immediately think of any examples of such artists changing their name other than Jeezy, I suppose hip-hop as a genre is still relatively young as a whole).

I generally hate this, and Lil' Baby has to be the absolute worst.

Who was the first Lil to get to number 1... Lily Allen?

The first one as a lead artist (if it counts! Otherwise it would be Lil Dicky), although Lil Kim and Lil Jon had number ones before that as featured artists!

And Lil Wayne before Dicky.

Yes, although I deliberately left him out because he's another featured artist that comes after Lily Allen.

Posted by: mdh May 9 2020, 02:54 PM

Lil Kim is probably the first to get big in the UK.

Following from today's news, does Little Richard count as the first?
