This has become one of my ultimate fave girls aloud songs over the years. I remember thinking it wasn’t up to par with their others back in the day but now it’s a bona fida BOP!

I always liked this but have never massively loved it, although I'm not sure why it was always seen as a black sheep of their discography, basically disowned by Brian Higgins who called it "a disaster record", and performed so badly commercially as a brand-new single. It's not a million miles away from the sound of the singles that preceded it.

It was the summer of the sad or serious bloke though I guess, with James Blunt and Daniel Powter dominating, Oasis No.1 that week, maybe it was just the wrong time for them to release a single at all, despite the apt theme. It's perfectly good though but I guess more decent album track quality than single for me.

It’s long been a favourite of mine and I’m glad a lot of fans have come round to it in recently years. I agree that it’s not that different to the songs Xenomania were making and it doesn’t feel out of place on Chemistry to me either.

I was just reading about this and it kind of begs the question why release it in the first place? If it was rushed to be included for the Herbie film and then discarded from the soundtrack and the disgust in it from its own producer was evident then why put it out as a single? Polydor must've had a lot of faith in it at the time kink.gif #7 being considered a flop back then still tickles me as it's an absolute triumph now.

The thing that will always be a shame to me about the #7 peak (which unfortunately at the time was viewed as being a bit of a flop, certainly after 8 Top 5s!) is that its first week sales were actually strong for that position, and could have been enough for an easy Top 5 in many other weeks in 2005. I’ll post some sales in the next post!

I can throw myself back to 2005 and remember how I wasn’t exactly enamoured with the song initially, and the fan base reaction as a whole was a bit tepid. It took a bit of time for it to really click with me, but I was loving it by the time the release date came! Funnily enough the weather that year was far from being a long hot summer! laugh.gif So I don’t know, maybe the song just didn’t hit in 2005 - as gooddelta said, its sound was far away from what was dominating at that time.

I’ve definitely noticed over the years that the fanbase has really warmed up to Long Hot Summer & that it doesn’t tend to be thrown around in “worst single discussions” anymore, which is pleasing! I think the song has aged really well and sits very comfortably amongst their zany uptempos. I think them achieving a few other single peaks in the “6-10” area of the Top 10 has perhaps helped it not look like so much of a black sheep as it came across in 2005.

Release week:
47235 Oasis (1)
29631 Rihanna (2)
24537 Daniel Powter (3)
23465 Simon Webbe (4)
23060 James Blunt (5)
22656 BEPs (6)
18451 Girls Aloud (7)
16424 Kaiser Chiefs (9)
12821 White Stripes (10)

1 week earlier:
45814 McFly (1)
32536 James Blunt (2)
27000 Daniel Powter (3)
18783 Babyshambles (4)
14726 Iron Maiden (5)
8505 Akon (10)
[Long Hot Summer could have been #5]

2 weeks earlier:
35671 James Blunt (1)
24874 Daniel Powter (2)
14883 Craig David (3)
14745 Goldfrapp (4)
12233 Akon (5)
[Long Hot Summer could have been #3]

3 weeks earlier:
44874 James Blunt (1)
27126 Daniel Powter (2)
13500 2Pac (3)
13206 Ciara (4)
11391 Texas (6)
10998 The Game (8)
[Long Hot Summer could have been #3]

Trust them to have chosen a competitive week. sad.gif

Where some of the above songs released before Long Hot Summer ended up in the EOY 2005 chart:

91 - OOH LA LA - GOLDFRAPP - 61400
100 - OH - CIARA FT LUDACRIS - 56700
126 - BELLY DANCER (BANANZA) - AKON - 46100
132 - LONG HOT SUMMER - GIRLS ALOUD - 44100
139 - ALL THE WAY - CRAIG DAVID - 42700
146 - DREAMS - GAME - 40900
150 - f*** FOREVER - BABYSHAMBLES - 40500
235 - THE TROOPER - IRON MAIDEN - 26200
238 - GETAWAY - TEXAS - 25600

Interesting that Goldfrapp, Ciara & Akon held up relatively well despite the lower first week sales - probably suggesting that they had more appeal with the general public for the sales to be spread out over a few weeks. Whereas Long Hot Summer was seemingly more of a fanbase front-loaded outcome. I think it’s quite notable that Long Hot Summer outsold the Craig David song that reached #3. I would say at the time that All the Way came across as being a much bigger hit than Long Hot Summer even though it sold worse!

I truly loved it from the moment I heard the premiere of it, it did disappointingly feel like there wasn't much buzz at the time and it was released in such a hugely competitive week. I distinctly remember a period of about a week between the release of LHS and Biology where I was so hooked on LHS it was literally all I would listen to laugh.gif

I did kind of worry they might be in danger of slipping before 'Biology' picked things up for them again. Same with when the Chemistry era came to an end and 'Something Kinda Oooh' and the GH elevated them again.
