It all looks pretty poor imo. I'll watch Bake Off though.

Posted by: Bluth 22nd November 2016, 07:30 PM

Its just the same old recycled programmes now. As much as I love some of them, there's just a lack of inspiration and I'm not surprised that Christmas TV ratings are decreasing.

Posted by: J▲hq 22nd November 2016, 07:35 PM

Here for the Outnumbered special and that's pretty much it from this list.

Posted by: jase. 22nd November 2016, 09:38 PM

same shit different year sad.gif

Witness for the Prosecution [Agatha Christie adaptation]

Very excited about this, though!

It is similar stuff as always but, given the BBC usually win the night and get the highest rating programme of Christmas Day (aside last year when the last ever Downton Abbey won it for ITV, for the first time in years), it's not really a surprise that they don't change it up. I know last year seemed like it had disappointing ratings with shows generally bringing in 5 or 6 million, but they all time-shifted very well, reaching highs of 9 and 10m.

Looking at the programmes listed though, you can pretty much predict there will be a chain of Doctor Who, Strictly, Call the Midwife, Eastenders, Mrs Brown's Boys and Michael McIntrye, as ever! laugh.gif You'll probably see a kids film (Monsters University perhaps, if that's rumoured) straight after the Queen's speech at 3pm followed by (depending on the timings) a short animation (perhaps this Ethel & Ernest?), given the success of Stick Man last year. It would be great if one of the Bake Off specials was shown on Christmas Day, but like I said, that chain from Doctor Who to Michael McIntrye has remained in tact for the last few years and I don't know what they'd replace if they were to do so.

Open All Hours and Agatha Christie will premiere on Boxing Day and I wouldn't be surprised to see two Eastenders episodes appear on New Year's Day again after the success of splitting the episodes last year, with David Walliams in the middle and the new Sherlock appearing afterwards at 9pm.

I don't really pay much attention to the ITV schedules but I reckon Grantchester will take Downton's slot and appear opposite Eastenders.

I appreciate that's a lot of waffle but I thought I best put it in writing to act as evidence before I eat my hat if I am wrong. tongue.gif

The Mirror has confirmed that the BBC will show Frozen on Christmas Day following the Queen's Speech. I believe this is its TV premiere (or at least a network premiere) so I reckon it will receive some really good ratings and set the BBC up for a healthy run throughout the night.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be shown on Boxing Day, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on December 30th and Monsters University on New Year's Day.

Mr Peabody & Sherman, Penguins of Madagascar, Planes, Muppets Most Wanted and Tinkerbell & The Pirate Fairy will also air over the Christmas period, whilst BBC 2 will air Saving Mr Banks, The Lady in The Van and Pride.

It's feature length and it'll be one of the highlights. I think Revolting Rhymes will be in the Stick Man / Gruffalo slot.

Shall be watching these:
Ethel & Ernest (saw it in the cinema, it's excellent)
Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes
Peter Pan Goes Wrong
Michael McIntyre's Christmas Show
To Walk Invisible

Maybe watch these:
Bake Off
Strictly (but the Christmas special is always poor. I guess they probably filmed it this week?)
Last Tango In Halifax
Top of the Pops - only if they feature older tracks, no wish to hear anything from 2016.

Overnight wise, Frozen will probably be the most watched thing on Christmas Day tbh laugh.gif Such a massive coup for them!

Not out of the question! Last year, Brave followed on from Queen's Speech and received 5.5m so it would seem Frozen would have an easy time topping 6m in comparison, perhaps even in touching distance of 7m.

Digiguide have these as the provisional schedules:

Christmas Eve (Saturday)

19:00 Emmerdale
19:30 Coronation Street
20:00 YBF!
20:30 Coronation Street
21:00 Grantchester

In regards to Christmas Day: The Doctor Who to Mrs Brown's Boys chain continues, but they managed to fit Bake Off in there too! I think the BBC will easily get better ratings than ITV and I can't see anything ITV have to offer winning the night. Maigret seems like it could be ITV's biggest rating on Christmas Day but I don't think it will do too much more than the 5.4m that watched the first episode back in March.

Of course, things are bound to change around before the official schedule comes in (particularly timings I would think) but it's a good enough idea of what to expect.

Posted by: richie 24th November 2016, 11:05 AM

Excellent - looks like another Christmas Day with the TV off! That's the best way.

Posted by: UltraBasicWitch 24th November 2016, 11:09 AM

Yasssss Frozen! Had a feeling that would be premiering this year <3

Love the films line-up, only ones I haven't seen are Pride and Lady In The Van and want to watch both of them! Highly recommend all the others!

It was a major part of our traditional family Christmas. We'd do the washing-up while TOTP was on. As soon as the programme finished, we'd turn the telly off and start opening our presents. Decades on, I've still never watched any of the Queen' speech and don't expect I ever will.

Personally I don't but there are people who do. It's got ~7m viewers the last two years.

The Good Life Christmas special is a must every year.

You can 100% count Strictly out as Mrs Browns Boys has beat it in the last few years so I don't see why this year would be different. GBBO will be interesting considering its the first Christmas episode, its obviously the penultimate episode to air on the BBC but the Comic/Sport Relief episodes have never done anywhere near as well as the regular series. If I was a betting person, I would say Mrs Browns Boys easily.

It has made me realise that Doctor Who will probably be the least watched programme on BBC One (from The Queen onwards) this year. sad.gif Eastenders is probably the only one it has a chance of beating, especially with the lack of a major storyline for EE.

Posted by: liamk97 23rd December 2016, 12:15 AM

I think Doctor Who is against Emmerdale. Obviously Doctor Who has its die hard fanbase that will watch live, but Emmerdale has been holding stronger year on year than the other two major soaps as well as having the most buzz surrounding it. Will definitely be interesting to see which wins the slot.

I imagine Eastenders will out rate Doctor Who, although the odds are stacked against it, given it airs as 9:30pm and against Maigret.

I wonder if Mrs Brown's Boys late start could harm its ratings. Is it usually on after half 10 at night?

Posted by: Jack 23rd December 2016, 08:33 AM

People actually find Mrs Brown's Boys entertaining? Wow.

Posted by: Doctor Blind 23rd December 2016, 08:44 AM

It is weirdly addictive, in a ‘so terrible you can’t look away’ way. At least it is not the car crash that was Mad About Alice which is without doubt the worst sitcom of all-time.

Looking forward to Charlie Brooker's 2016 Wipe and the The Entire Universe, as well the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures which I always end up watching.

Posted by: bah... humbug... 23rd December 2016, 10:46 AM

Looking forward to Witness for the Prosecution, after last year's adaptation of And Than There Were None, which I was very impressed with, looks like BBC1 are adapted Agatha Christie Books to the small screen every year during the festive period. Unless this is to tie in with marking 100 years since Agatha Christie wrote her first crime novel.

I don't understand it either. I watched it for the first time last night and just thought - this is just so dated. The canned laughter makes it even worse than it is.

I like the fellow who plays Mrs Brown though - in person he seems like a really nice chap.

Posted by: Jingle Burbes 23rd December 2016, 04:46 PM

Personally I think it will be Bake Off vs. Frozen! Mrs Brown's Boys is on quite late this year, so I can't see it topping the night.

In fact I'll be bold and do a top 10 prediction:

01. Bake Off - 7.4m
02. Frozen - 7.2m
03. Mrs Brown's Boys - 6.2m
04. Corrie - 6m
05. Strictly - 6m [I think they'll be very close, could be the other way round]
06. Eastenders - 5.7m
07. Call The Midwife - 5.6m
08. Doctor Who - 5.6m
09. Emmerdale - 5.5m
10. Maigret - 5.1m

I'm interested to see how close I get! I'll be hugely surprised if anything on ITV comes close to the top. I might be underestimating Call The Midwife but I just can't see that many people sitting through 90 minutes of it on Christmas Day. The Frozen / Bake Off pairing will really help other out which is why I think they'll be the top 2 by some margin.

In terms of what I'm looking forward to, only really Bake Off and Eastenders. I'm looking forward to finally getting round to watching The Lady In The Van though!

Posted by: liamk97 23rd December 2016, 05:01 PM

Frozen will get good ratings for a film - 7m definitely seems achievable - and Bake Off will have its dedicated audience on top of people tuning in for sentimental value of it being the penultimate episode on the BBC (although it won't bring in the same ratings as the series did; 7m nevertheless seems perfectly in reach).

Tbh, those predictions seem pretty good to me! However, I'm unsure whether Doctor Who and Emmerdale will be able to bring in pretty much the same ratings when they're on at the same time. I feel people would be more inclined to catch-up on Emmerdale, so I fear it could end up with comparitively underwhelming ratings.

I feel like Mrs Brown's Boys is the type of show that could bring in solid ratings regardless of what time it was on.

Posted by: jase. 23rd December 2016, 10:44 PM

You see...now I'm definitely thinking NOT MBB. So it's between Strictly, Bake Off...and Frozen? Could that really do it? I DON'T KNOW!

Posted by: liamk97 23rd December 2016, 11:21 PM

Bake Off and Frozen are the hardest to predict given they've never been on at Christmas. We all know how successful Bake Off is, but perhaps it'll see a similar dip in ratings that Strictly gets from its seriea to its special (about a 3m dip, so still like 7m) and Frozen is one of the most popular films, so its premiere should get more than the typical 5/6m that films in its slot get. However, you can just not predict these things for sure as to what they'll rate on the night. I imagine both could get 9m+ with official 7 day data.

20 quid on Frozen would get me £260 back. Oh the DECISIONS drama.gif

EDIT: Incorrect. The maximum you can put on Frozen is £8.33 to which I'd get £108.29 back so I've done that seeing as though it's only 8 quid. Also placed £20 on Bake Off to which I'd get £68.01 back.

And that's my final flutter of the year tongue.gif

Posted by: liamk97 24th December 2016, 12:30 AM

Tbh Frozen is a good bet to win the night. Im sure Downton Abbey won the night last year with 6.9m and the Christmas film usually averages 6m, and you'd think Frozen was popular enough to get 7m, so could easily win the night.

My night has been all ITV tonight and I'm usually Team BBC! Watched Emmerdale, Paul O'Grady for the Love of Dogs and now Corrie. I'll turn over for Eastenders then probably watch Love Actually back on ITV. The BBC schedule, although objectively strong, just doesn't interest me.

Boxing Day looks better for BBC. I'll probably watch Revolting Rhymes on BBC, Emmerdale and Corrie on ITV, then Eastenders, back to Corrie for the second episode, then Witness for the Prosecution and Outnumbered.

BBC 1 Boxing Day
14:40 Brave
16:05 The Gruffalo
16:30 How to Train Your Dragon 2
18:05 BBC News
18:30 Revolting Rhymes
19:00 The Great British Christmas Bake Off
20:00 Eastenders
20:30 Still Open All Hours
21:00 Witness for the Prosecution
22:00 Outnumbered

ITV Boxing Day
14:40 Sleeping Beauty
16:10 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
18:45 ITV News
19:00 Emmerdale
19:30 Coronation Street
20:00 You've Been Framed
20:30 Coronation Street
21:00 Captain Phillips

Posted by: JosephCarey 25th December 2016, 09:13 PM

Tonight for me has been Doctor Who, Emmerdale on +1, Corrie, then EastEnders and Mrs Brown's Boys coming up so the BBC just have the edge. Very hyped for Outnumbered tomorrow!

It was alright, but nothing special, I just find the Christmas specials always lack something, I did get bored in the middle of it.

definitely better than the last few christmas specials, though probably not great enough to convert the non-fans.

Overnights

01. The Queen - 7.7m (BBC One & ITV)
02. Strictly Come Dancing - 7.2m
03. The Great British Bake Off - 6.3m
04. Mrs Browns Boys - 6.1m
05. Call the Midwife - 6.1m
06. Eastenders - 5.9m
07. Coronation Street - 5.8m
08. Doctor Who - 5.7m
09. Frozen - 4.7m ohmy.gif
10. Emmerdale - 4.2m

Emmerdale & Corrie don't include +1. Got these from Lizo Mzimba.

Actually surprised Strictly was the highest and Frozen only got 4.7m! Quite low figures on the whole though, nowhere near the heights that we had a few years ago and they just seem to be decreasing year on year now. Pleased that Doctor Who did comparatively well though and that it beat Emmerdale by 1.5m!

I'm sure GBBO or Mrs Browns Boys will be the highest in the 7 day BARB ratings.

So Strictly won in the end and Frozen didn't even break 5m? f*** my life rolleyes.gif

Posted by: liamk97 26th December 2016, 01:35 PM

Compared to last Christmas on BBC: Top of the Pops is down 910k; BBC's broadcast of The Queen's Speech is also down 910k; Frozen is down 850k from last year's film in its slot (Brave); Doctor Who is only slightly down (90k); Strictly is up 680k; Call the Midwife is up 260k; Eastenders is up 170k; and Mrs Brown's Boys is down 280k.

On ITV: Harry Potter is up 1.54m on last year's film in its slot (Happy Feet); ITV's broadcast of The Queen's Speech is up 1.61m; You've Been Framed is down 280k; Emmerdale is up 310k (despite being on an hour earlier than last year); Paul O'Grady for the Love of Dogs is up 60k (very different slot though: 6:45pm compared to 5pm); Coronation Street is up 270k; and, now the biggy, Maigret's 2 hour special is down a huge 3.69m on Downton Abbey's 2 hour special in its slot last year.

These are the Eastenders Christmas Day overnights since 2000 that I can find:

2016: 05.90m (28.1%)
2015: 05.73m (23.8%)
2014: 07.55m (30.2%)
2013: 07.78m (29.0%)
2012: 09.37m (34.3%)
2011: 09.92m (33.4%)
2010: 11.40m (43.2%)
2009: 10.86m (45.9%)
2008: 09.89m (40.6%) / 11.47m (44.9%) *
2007: 11.60m (53.7%) / 13.90m (55.3%)
2006: 09.24m (44.3%) / 10.68m (44.0%)
2005: 10.12m (44.0%)
2004:
2003:
2002: 12.40m / 16.00m (62.2%)
2001: 10.50m / 14.50m
2000: 00.00m / 12.10m (46.8%)

* There seems to be some issue with 2008's 11.47m figure, as the consolidated figure is only 11.34m.

What's was Brave's competition last year? I feel like The Lion King affected Frozen's ratings heavily!

Posted by: liamk97 26th December 2016, 01:53 PM

Cameraman to the Queen (1.05m) and Countrywise Winter Wonderland (1.17m). tongue.gif The Lion King will have affected Frozen but I don't think anyone anticipated it to be that much!

Looking forward to Witness for the Prosecution

I was as well. Wished I hadn't bothered now. I'm going to have to dig out the old Charles Laughton / Marlene Deitrich one to cleanse my mind of it. Or close my eyes and try and relive the brilliant production that Wigan Little Theatre did of it.

Posted by: Kye 27th December 2016, 04:12 PM

I don't know anyone that actually watched Christmas TV live this year, we didn't even have the TV on on Christmas day ohmy.gif
The catch up and recording services mean that it's not a necessity to watch the shows live so we will definitely continue to see ratings decline or stay very similar.

That was bit of a dull squib, I was expecting more from it, not sure if I want to bother with the final episode tonight but there is nothing else on TV

The thing is - if its done right - it really is worth sticking with for the ending. I'd stick to the 1957 film though if I were you - or if its staged at a local theatre (an am-dram production) go and see that.

Episode 2 of WFTP was AMAZING. That twisted ending wub.gif Andrea Riseborough was absolutely phenomenal.

I stuck with it in the end, part II was a lot better, the ending was quite good, with that twist. This is one book I did not read and I wasn't aware of the original film.

Great performance from Andrea Riseborough, I just fell in love with the character in the end.

I hope BBC1 keep on adapted the novels for TV every year

Unbelievably excited for Charlie Brooker's 2016 Wipe and Cunk on Christmas tomorrow!

Jonathan Creek special, superb, I was quite intrigued and glued to the TV screen as the story unfolded, my partner worked it all out, especially the phony bit laugh.gif so much better than last year's Christmas special

2016 Wipe was great, it was always gonna be a pretty tough job trying to make comedy out of such a depressing year laugh.gif If only we could go back to that puddle being the news of the day.

Cunk on Christmas followed 2016 Wipe in the schedules but obviously that doesn't mean anything when watching on catch up! kink.gif Did you catch Cunk on Shakespeare earlier in the year? That was hands down the funniest half hour of TV I've ever seen, Cunk on Christmas was good but couldn't come close to the brilliance of the first one.

2016 Wipe was obviously great, a lot of hilarious things that came out of it and some brilliant observations. Probably one of the few times I have actually been a bit depressed when watching one of the Wipes just because I was reminded of all the events, all the things that were said all at once. Loved the fact that they did a Moments of Wonder on the Apocalypse (or a 'Pocalypse')!

Posted by: Doctor Blind 1st January 2017, 12:51 PM

It was a shame there was no Doug Stanhope or Adam Curtis feature this year but still a good Wipe - especially the Trump parody of OutKast written by CasssetteBoy.

Posted by: Doctor Mysterio 1st January 2017, 01:09 PM

I'm not the biggest fan of Doug Stanhope but I suppose it might have been good regarding Trump. Apparently the first edit was 90 minutes long so there was a lot of material left on the cutting room floor!

I didn't really enjoy it. Jonathan didn't seem to be all that bothered that he'd just murdered someone (this was brushed over very quickly) and I just miss Caroline Quentin and the old windmill too much.
