(image randomly stolen from google) Hopefully, I'll be starting a thread for all my TV highlights in 2016 soon but what has been your favourite TV from last year. We've seen dogs flying planes, those people from the telly lip-syncing, Gary Linekar presenting in his pants, Tom Hiddleston's bum, killer bees, all of Planet Earth and the last ever Bake Off on the BBC. Were there any memorable moments or any standout shows for you? How did the soaps fare this year, better or worse? |

I'm with you on the Gary Lineker thing, definitely a highlight for me
I loved Hunted, The A-Word, Thirteen & Stranger Things in terms of series', and The X-Factor was definitely one of my favourite seasons of said show for a long time. Still loving Family Guy, Bake Off, and Coronation Street (the latter is without a doubt my favourite soap as ever) ─ on the whole 2016 was a rather good year for TV! |

I think it was a pretty good year for soaps generally. Emmerdale is on top form and has been for a while, Corrie's made steps in the right direction in the past few months, and while EastEnders is lacking a lot of the big storylines (I say that before tonight's new year episode...), I've mostly been enjoying the character moments of the latter part of the year. Hollyoaks however is a total mess :')
I didn't really watch a lot of TV beyond the soaps and talent shows etc last year actually, probably should try and change that this year! I ended up watching Containment on E4 just on a whim and while it wasn't perfect, I got very invested in it and I was very upset at one point near the end of the series (no spoilers on the off chance I'll ruin it for someone). Doctor Who has been sorely missed from my TV watching! Talent/reality shows have been a mixed bag. X Factor's been very fun, probably the most fun in a good few years now, and I liked the judging panel, although the song choices and themes were mostly rather dated unfortunately (way more than normal). The Apprentice has delivered possibly my favourite series to date, thoroughly entertaining and it was great to see someone like Alana win after the way some of the others treated her at the start. Big Brother UK delivered a fantastic civilian series, so much fun and plenty of likeable characters, with the unlikeable few going out early on mostly (shame about the winner though). The summer CBB however was awful and I couldn't watch the entire thing for the first time since I began watching BB in 2013. The US and Canada seasons have been great too, the former was the best since BB 14 I think. (although this is more for the Reality forum lol but oh well x) |

Well, most of my favourites were international (Game of Thrones, Stranger Things etc.), but British has been pretty great too, my top 2 shows of the year were Planet Earth II and Black Mirror, were both amazing, ironically in very different ways ofc., the former made me feel happier about the world we live in and the latter made me more scared of it
The Living & The Dead was also a pretty good ghost drama, I sadly haven't finished the second series of Humans despite enjoying it last year, mainly through lack of time and other shows catching my attention more. I've heard quite good thing so maybe I'll catch up on that. Bake Off :'( Wasn't the best final series, but one I'll treasure given it's probably the last time I'll watch it. I'm not particularly clued up on soaps, but Peggy's death on Eastenders was done really well. This post has been edited by Chez Wombat: 1st January 2017, 06:04 PM |

Focusing just on UK, reality TV and soaps are my main ones, and they've been rocky tbh.
X Factor had a better series than it has since 2011 for me, but that was largely just becuase Saara was so amazing. I do always watch, but in horrendous series like 2013 or 2012, if I was out and missed it I wouldn't bother whereas Saara being present in this series made me make sure I watched it when I got home or the next morning! January CBB was quite good, mostly because of Tiffany but I shamefully kind of enjoyed Steph's mini redemption arc and her coming 2nd, I actually wanted her to win by the time Tiffany was out of the running oops. The less said about the summer shambles the better, easily the worst series of any Big Brother I've seen. The January one had John and Winston being awful but the former wasn't 100% of the series like Bear and the latter pissed off quickly. Never before has the manipulation and favouritism been so rife As for Bake Off, that was a decent series if not its best, but Candice was the best possible final BBC winner <3 Two amazing winners in a row. Emmerdale has been really on form for the soaps, particularly the shock deaths of Holly and Tess as well as of course Ashley's dementia. Iain McLeod has done wonders, Kate Oates' tendency to equate having an affair to being a good storyline was getting very old when she split brilliant couples who worked like Zac and Lisa. The others have been very iffy, particularly Hollyoaks where the only thing I can really say was a highlight was Jade's death which was beautifully done and so sad. Lindsey's "comuppance" was good too as a string of episodes but I hate that in Hollyoaks killers always avoid jusice, they tend to just be killed by another killer I'm sure Cameron will have the same fate soon. I'm not sure I'm going to keep bothering with it tbh. Corrie is always boring anyway and Eastenders' new producer hasn't got off to a great start. He has been brilliant with Kathy though, and Lee's depression storyline has shone. It's just a tad slow paced for me at times, a bit too much realism. As for other genres, I adored Witless on BBC3 and hope for another series, it was hilarious as expected with Kerry Howard taking the lead! Thirteen from BBC3 was brilliant too, I wasn't hugely keen on the ending though and it's not something they could particularly do a second series of without changing the focus and tone tbh. There was other good comedy too, I loved Tracey Ullman's sketch show and there's probably others that I'm forgetting about |

01. The Missing (season 2)
02. Line of Duty (season 3) 03. Marcella (season 1) 04. Happy Valley (season 3) 05. The Fall (season 3) Outside of dramas, Planet Earth II is EASILY the best show of 2016. My two soaps (Emmerdale and EastEnders) have had their ups and downs but I still love both of them. Reality TV hasn't been the best this year - 2016's I'm a Celebrity was the worst series in the history of the show, ditto with The Apprentice. CBB is getting waaaaay too manufactured. X-Factor is what it is although I adored this years judging panel! Strictly was the reality tv highlight. |
