dance seems to be a major chart force, with the genre getting tons of UK #1 singles recently. So I thought it would be nice to have this resource. It will be pinned for a short time but also will be added to the links section of the Welcome thread if you want easy access to it.

As with any thread like this, there are some songs that can arguably be dance or not dance. I've used wikipedia to help get classifications of sub-genres that the songs belong to.

Here goes:

Very interesting, thanks for compiling!

Minor error:

1998

41. Cornershop - Brimful of Asha (Norman Cook Remix) / Big Beat / 1 week
42. Madonna - Frozen / Electronica
43. Run-D.M.C. vs. Jason Nevins - It's Like That / Hip House / 6 weeks

If I remember well Frozen was 1 week long number 1.

thanks for the suggestions. I was considering adding some of them when writing the thread but decided they were too dance-pop. Same with Club Can't Handle Me.

don't worry I was getting around to adding the omissions tongue.gif

I've added all your suggestions just now with the exceptions of 'Music', 'I Don't Feel Like Dancin' (too pop) and 'Scream and Shout' (too urban)

Good list - I'd be tempted to put

1977 - Donna Summer - I Feel Love
1981 - Kraftwerk - The Model / Computer Love

in there. They weren't referred to as dance music as I don't suppose anyone knew what it was yet!

So few this year sad.gif even King is disputable, the OCC clearly don't seem to think its dance as its not on the Top 40 Dance Singles (despite the fact Desire is wacko.gif )

yeah I doubt we'll get as many dance #1s this year as the genre seems to have already peaked until its next big comeback (plus the fact we seem to be getting very few #1s anyway so far)

Cheerleader is a potential one (I'm starting to think it has a good chance now) & maybe they'll count Bloodstream in a couple of weeks?

Interesting list! biggrin.gif

I'm not really sure I'd consider 'King' house though, maybe more electro-pop/dance?

Yeah there are always going to be some borderline tracks which some might consider dance and some might not. It's a great list though, and it shows the peaks and troughs of chart dance music throughout the years. Didn't realise 'With Every Heartbeat' was the only dance number 1 of 2007 ohmy.gif

It would actually be quite interesting to see similar lists for others genres e.g. rock/indie, urban/R&B etc.

That is quite shocking actually, and I don't really consider it to be dance, but the song's genre is debatable and I didn't want 2007 to feel left out tongue.gif

Thankfully the number of dance #1s has increased ever since (except the slight dip from 2009 to 2010, and I can't see 2015 beating 2014 either)

There's a list of R&B #1s in the urban forum: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=166483
It has the same issue of where to draw the line of what does/doesn't fit the genre, but that'd be the case with most, if not all, genres really!

Pretty horrifying that it's been well over a decade since the last trance #1, shame the genre is so commercially unappealing and gets such little radio support.

yeah it's sad but I've learnt to accept that trance will probably never come back into fashion sad.gif Shame as we got some brilliant trance hits from back in the day, but now we've got amazing house songs to make up for it

2007 Beyoncé & Shakira ~ Beautiful Liar (Freemasons Remix) 3 weeks --> surely counts as much as Cornershop and Mr. Probz since >95% of its sales came from the Freemasons version biggrin.gif

TBF Clean Bandit/Jess Glynne (Real Love) and Philip George (Wish You Were Mine), with first week sales of >80k, were somewhat unlucky to miss out on chart toppers - blocked by a front loaded charity record (Band Aid 30) and one of the biggest hits of the decade (Uptown Funk).

Dance labels need to figure out how to maximize streaming to coincide with the impact date ~ clearly holding back audio streams until the week of the physical release isn't working, see Sigma, while the likes of 'Cheerleader' and 'Firestone' have shown you can build up demand on streaming services in the weeks/months before release or full commercial push... Getting the balance right could be the key to how many dance No1's we'll see in the next few years~

Massive Trance revival for the early 20's~ you heard it here first wink.gif magic.gif
