We definitely need a thread for Shawn's latest tour, because the amount of images and discussion that has spawned from it on the likes of Twitter, Instagram and lots of other social media is huge! So, have you been to see Shawn live this time around; if so what are your thoughts? Was it the best night of your life or the best night of your life? ohmy.gif

Did you manage to get Meet & Greet tickets and have your photo taken, take part in one of the Q&A sessions that have been dominating discussion on Twitter among the fanbase, and what merchandise did you buy when you were at the concert? Are you yet to go to your date - when is it?

09.04.19 Birmingham, England [Birmingham Arena]

This was my date, I went to see him with J▲hq! wub.gif

We were fourth row in the middle block, so we had an excellent view of him and the staging. heart.gif Seeing his arms Shawn that close up though... *.*

"Man with guitar" isn't my usual type of concert, but Shawn's stage presence was actually electrifying! He performed every song with a huge amount of passion, to the extent that there were songs I had previously thought were "so so", that I ended up really enjoying (for example, Life of the Party).

I think the set list was mostly fine, but I was surprised at some 'Shawn Mendes' omissions while there were quite a few 'Illuminate' album tracks. I would have liked a performance of Queen! Obviously with this date being in April, If I Can't Have You & Seńorita weren't released yet cry.gif He also didn't do the cover of Whitney. ohmy.gif I'll have to check that out on YouTube!

I loved the screen visuals for this tour, they were very pretty/striking. Definitely amongst the best visuals I've seen.

Prior to going I had feared I'd feel out of place in the audience, what with being a man in my early 30s (which I'm sure isn't his typical audience outside of dads taking their children kink.gif ). However I was actually pleasantly surprised to see a lot of male fans in attendance, who mostly seemed 20+, so I felt fine. I know I probably shouldn't care about this sort of thing, but I am prone to being self conscious. laugh.gif

I'd definitely love to see him again in the future!

16.04.19 London, England [The O2 Arena]

I went with my best friend, and we got VIP M&G tickets. I was so hyped up and we put so much planning into the day. It didn't all go to plan, mainly because of the bag requirements the O2 had put in place apparently at Shawn's request. They changed the bag restrictions without advertising it or letting anybody know, so people who brought bigger bags (which would usually be allowed in) couldn't take them inside and had to put them in the bag drop at a cost of Ł10. I was stressed and was expected to do this just a few minutes before the time we were supposed to have arrived at the VIP, and this wasn't even inside the main arena. This was at 3:30, and the bag drop wasn't even open, so I was expected to leave it outside (guarded). I was stressed and fuming and it didn't put me in a good mood.

The meet and greet went very well though. It was super quick and I barely remember what I said to Shawn but it was so cool having met him! He answered my friend's question in the Q&A too heart.gif

More bag drama on the way into the main venue and I got yelled at by a member of staff for asking a question lol. I ended up missing Alessia's set because of how long the bag drop queue was.

Inside the arena, I bought a t-shirt which I LOVE wub.gif as well as a wristband! I thought our tickets were 2nd row, but they were actually the FRONT row and we got to stand at the barrier!! It was the most insane experience ever - right at the front of the O2.

Shawn was exceptionally good. It was my fourth time seeing him (one of which was a small acoustic set when Illuminate came out) and it was the best time yet. The setlist was strong, plenty of both upbeat and downtempo moments, and I loved it all. Shawn looked our way several times and it was a night to remember for all the right reasons in the end.

I emailed a complaint to the O2 that night and my eventual response was positive. They refunded my Ł10 and said they amended the policy the following night, allowing people to empty their larger bags into clear plastic bags and put the empty bag inside - it makes far more sense and is so much less stressful. I'm glad they learnt from their mistakes because it did put a dampener on my night, but hey, the concert was AMAZING and I got this iconic photo to come with it:

The arm porn was EVERYTHING *.* Have so many photos on my camera roll of them lol

I agree that Queen really should have been included on the setlist sad.gif I think there must have been a few songs from the album that they thought wouldn't have got as much of a reaction as some of the others - it was only after the outcry from fans on Twitter etc that they slowly started adding them in (although still no Queen argh).

06.04.19 Glasgow, Scotland [SSE Hydro]

That was my date, and honestly it was probably the best concert I've been to. I loved every moment of it, and it went in far too quick. cry.gif He just oozes presence, likability and has so much to offer on stage, and the notes he can hit singing live too *.* (Particular Taste delivered such a WOW moment for that)

He talked a lot about the medication he's on and how he copes now in the lead up to performing, etc so the vulnerability he's able to show and share with the audience too is so admirable.

My only regret is not getting M&G tickets for this tour because it all looked like such a fantastic experience. I'll definitely be going for it (no matter the cost x) next time if he does something similar!

Review of the show in Atlanta on the 31st:

QUOTE
With his toned triceps, perfectly floppy forelock and crinkle-eyed smile, Shawn Mendes is an obvious heartthrob.

But his electric stage presence, honeyed voice and prodigious musical skills make him so much more than the pop star du jour.

On his second headlining arena run, dutifully named, “The Tour,” Mendes again proved how he is worthy of the acclaim that has only intensified in the mere four years since his debut album.

The piercing screams of the estrogen-fueled fans who sold out State Farm Arena Wednesday night began minutes before Mendes rose from the stage floor while strumming his guitar on the funky “Lost in Japan.” Flashing lights from wristbands clapped onto tender wrists illuminated the arena, while a giant, circular video screen tilted toward the stage, affording everyone in the room a worthy gander.

As he strolled the stage during “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back” with his acoustic guitar slung across his back, Mendes looked the perfect poster boy. He might moonlight as an underwear model, but onstage, Mendes is all about the music.

Throughout the show, his elastic voice comfortably hit the sweet spot of his upper range on songs from his latest, self-titled album. “Nervous” and “Because I Had You” spotlighted his deftness with melody – a missing ingredient in some of the most revered modern catalogs in pop and R&B – while even the relatively ancient “Stitches,” from 2015, demonstrated his musical acuity in a slightly reworked form.

“I’ve never had a bad memory here,” Mendes said of playing in Atlanta. It might be a line he’s used elsewhere on this tour that has rolled since March and will continue around the world until December, but his delivery was steeped in sincerity.

With a four-piece band backing him, Mendes switched regularly among acoustic guitar, upright piano and electric guitar, even breaking into a solo worthy of his guru, John Mayer, during “Run.

”He dashed from the main stage to a B-stage at the back of the venue – decorated with a beanstalk-ish rose – to offer a bite of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” on piano and a medley that included “A Little Too Much,” from his “Handwritten” debut, and “Life of the Party,” his 2014 debut single.

Mendes explained that another new track – he performed a significant chunk of his 2018 release – “Like to Be You,” was written by Julia Michaels and produced by his “musical idol,” Mayer. The effectiveness of the breathy ballad is rooted in its simplicity, and Mendes seems to understand that well-structured material with bridges and choruses and meaningful lyrics will outlast any trend.

Whether it was the sultry “Particular Taste” from his current effort or his 2016 smash, “Treat You Better” - which evolved into a rallying cry against domestic violence - Mendes’ songs have an unshakable quality not unlike some of the strongest songs from another of his inspirations, Coldplay,” whom he pays tribute to with the visceral “Fix You.”

And to think, so much accomplished and he doesn’t even turn 21 until next week.

Mendes’ opener for this North American run of shows is his fellow precocious performer, Alessia Cara.

Her 40-minute set spanned her four-year career, including her first hit, “Here” and the new “Ready,” from her upcoming EP.

Cara kept the crowd engaged with a singalong of “How Far I’ll Go,” the “Moana” ballad written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and her set-closing dance hit, “Stay.” In between, she talked to the audience with relatable messages of empowerment and broken hearts and strapped on a guitar to join her three backing musicians.

Cara looked, refreshingly, like the 23-year-old woman she is in sneakers with a shirt knotted at the waist, and she demonstrated the power of her distinctive voice on the soulful “Comfortable” and “Scars to Your Beautiful.”

So good to see so many positive reviews for each and every one of his shows on this tour wub.gif

Manchester 7th April
Alessia Cara was an amazing support act surprisingly and really set the tone for the evening. Some interesting inclusions on the set list for sure which a few have obviously been replaced now with IICHY and Senorita. Why? had my best friend balling her eyes out to as he dedicated it to Manchester (a song which we’d previously said we were least excited for!). Queen would have been a standout moment though particularly with that middle 8 building up, anthemic for sure. In My Blood also worked as a really good closing song for him too although I would have preferred Lost In japan without the remix as the opening. Amazing set too and the wristbands (similar to Taylor’s tours) are always a nice inclusion!

Recent tweet from Shawn (or his manager if we're to go by what some recent articles say kink.gif):

I love seeing all of these video compilations they put up from the tour - makes me wish they'd do a DVD release at some point, but I doubt that'll happen cry.gif

Another fantastic review of the tour, this time for the Nashville date wub.gif It's really great to see so much universal love for both him and the tour.

QUOTE
Though they might equal other concert crowds in capacity, fans who come to see teen heartthrobs are able to reach a different volume level than any other audience, a phenomenon that was certainly in effect during Shawn Mendes' stop in Nashville last night for his self-titled tour.

While Mendes is 20 years old and no longer an official teenager, many of his fans have been with him since his very first album, Handwritten, released in 2015. On Friday night, those fans were clearly proud of him, passionately singing along to every song and expressing their love for the Canadian star at any given chance. When he asked them to wave their arms, they happily obliged, and when he blew them kisses, they swooned and eagerly returned them.

Mendes arrived on stage with recent single "Lost in Japan" and the crowd brought the energy instantly, filling the room with sound as they jumped along to the beat. During his second song, "There's Nothing Holding Me Back," Mendes held his microphone out for the crowd to sing the words for him and seemed elated when they did so, as if there had been any question as to whether or not they knew the words.

Each member of the audience was equipped with a light-up bracelet that changed color depending on the song being played, casting an appropriately pink glow during "Nervous" and a soft blue cast during the ballad "Never Be Alone." While these lights were flashing, the screen behind Mendes alternated between showing a live feed of his face and scenery matching the song in question, whether that be flowers, planets, sunsets or colorful abstract art.

The stage production was sparse, with just Mendes and his band on stage without any props or accessories. That simplicity is part of the singer's appeal, and his audience doesn't come to see elaborate props or visuals, they come to see a young man and his guitar, an experience Mendes expertly delivered on.

His voice sounded clear and strong and he often moved into his falsetto, which caused the audience to erupt in fresh screams each time, especially during the whistling "Particular Taste." Dressed in painted-on jeans and a sleeveless collared shirt he later removed to reveal a second sleeveless shirt, Mendes oozed confidence, the result of years on the road and crowds full of fans who can't get enough of him. With three albums of material to mine from, the 20-year-old did a solid job of giving the fans what they came to hear along with promoting his latest album, 2018’s Shawn Mendes.

Several songs received slight production updates, with Mendes adding a bit of a rock edge to early hit "Stitches" and turning the sultry "Seńorita" into a very brief piano ballad before returning to strumming his guitar. In the middle of his set, Mendes hit the B Stage in the middle of the crowd, a circular platform at the center of which stood a giant light-up flower that reached almost to the ceiling. He began his time on the smaller stage at the piano, thoughtfully playing a medley featuring one song from each of his album for any newbies in the audience, which, judging by the screams when asked, were many, or else his fans just couldn't help but scream at anything he said.

Mendes seemed especially pleased to be playing in Music City and professed his love for Nashville several times throughout the evening, even sharing that thinks the city has "the best fried potatoes in the entire world." He also conceded that the Nashville Predators are an "incredible hockey team," which means a lot coming from someone who hails from Toronto.

Interestingly, his penultimate song was a cover of Coldplay's "Fix You," which Mendes described as "one of my favorite songs of all time." He sat at the piano as a the crowd sang along, although to a much lesser degree than previous songs that night. For his final number, the rousing "In My Blood," the screen behind him moved up to reveal a wall of lights that gave the stage much more depth and turned it from production befitting a smaller venue to a true arena show. He saved the special effects for last, with confetti shooting from the ceiling and smoke from the stage as the song came to its conclusion.

When he spoke to the crowd, he did so candidly and easily, admitting that while he does say "I love you" to almost every crowd (and means it), he had a special message for Nashville, telling the audience that there's "magic in the city."

"We have the music, we have the lights, we have the cameras, but the most incredible part of my show, the most amazing part every single time, is you guys," he continued before asking the crowd to continue singing as loud as they could — which, to no surprise, they were happy to do.

I'm really gutted I didn't go to this. I really should've done </3

But, I think with the amount of 'Illuminate' tracks and lack of 'Shawn Mendes' tracks I probs woulda felt a bit lost amongst it as I've only heard the former, like twice. laugh.gif

I am pleased to see he had my fave in there though, 'When I'm Ready'! wub.gif

According to some Twitter fans we may be getting a Netflix documentary and a live album, both recorded at his Rogers Centre date ohmy.gif

Would absolutely LOVE for this to be true wub.gif We definitely need to see a filmed version of the tour, and it'll be great to have another live album to add to the collection!

Camila watching Shawn performing in Brooklyn:

A lot of articles reporting it as a true look of adoration as she watches on, etc. Are we believing they're a genuine couple yet, or is it still just all PR?

Seeing a lot of positivity on Twitter about his Rogers Centre date tonight wub.gif There seems to be a lot of special merch being handed out for his 'first sold out stadium date'!

Let's hope the rumours about it being filmed for a Netflix doc turn out to be true too *.*

A fantastic review of one of Shawn's Australian shows: https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/music...ly-show-in-town

U2 were playing another arena the same night, and it appears he's won over some that maybe would've normally gone to the other gig ohmy.gif

So the support act for the Latin American dates still hasn't been announced, and many fans are starting to think that it might be Camila that supports him, given it'll be very close to her album being released when he's there.

Interesting ohmy.gif I'd pay good money to see them both live on the same night *.*
