BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Kelly Clarkson - Meaning Of Life

Posted by: Jonjo Nov 9 2016, 09:52 PM

Quite a while away, but the plan is for a single in April and album in June 2017! Exciting.

QUOTE
Who's ready for new Kelly? Kelly Clarkson has shared details of when we can expect new music from her - and it's not far away.

The singer is currently working on her eighth studio album, her first since leaving RCA - the record company she had been signed with since winning American Idol in 2002. Kelly is now signed to Atlantic Records who are supporting her new “soulful urban pop” collection.

Speaking to People Magazine, the three-time Grammy winner confirmed that new material will land in 2017, and there is a clear trajectory of when Kel's next music will be in our ears:

"We are hoping the single will be in April, and then the album in June," explained Kelly. "It’s my favorite thing I’ve ever done. It’s the first time I got to pick my label, because I just got out of my Idol contract. I’ve been dying to make this record since Idol."

Kelly believes that this new style of music from her will be her most authentic yet. “It’s very much my personality,” she said. "I think it’s very much what people expected from me off of watching me on Idol. After having a career for so long, it’s so weird that nobody knows [my sound]yet, so it’s going to be so good."

Kelly was named most successful winner in American Idol's history, having sold an estimated 25 million albums worldwide. Here in the UK, Kelly has amassed five Top 10 albums and nine Top 10 singles, including the Number 1 smash My Life Would Suck Without You. When Official Charts caught up with the singer last year, she told us she felt like it was "time to really spread my wings and really try something new," on her next album.

"Basically, there are too many options," she explained. "I’ve thought a lot about doing a dance record as well. I’m sure I’ll do them all at some point - I’m just excited to now have the freedom to do whatever I want."

Looking forward to this, naturally! But I believe a soul album would be wonderful coming from her!

Posted by: SeanGrey Nov 9 2016, 09:56 PM

Kelly has a voice that would easily suit most genre's of music I find and I think each of her albums so far have shown this. SO ready for another album though, it doesn't feel like a year ago Piece By Piece came out!

Not sure I'll enjoy this “soulful urban pop” Kelly, but at this point in her career she may do what she wants.

So someone posted this to instagram. Seems like an album is coming soon

Posted by: Liаm Aug 15 2017, 04:41 PM

There's whispers that the single is coming very soon, I can't wait to have her back whatever the sound may be wub.gif

Her voice lends itself to pretty much anything so I'm sure no matter what it'll be amazing wub.gif

SO excited. The invites seem very classy and I suspect she will go down that route for the album. Maybe something Adele-esque. As has been proven numerous times, she could expertly pull it off!

Posted by: Jonjo Aug 24 2017, 09:08 PM

She's gonna be performing on GMA on 8th September! So I imagine something is coming VERY soon!!! dance.gif

'Love So Soft' is apparently the title of the lead single. I need this in my life like, yesterday.

If she's on the Today show in 2 weeks.... single out on September 1st? Or perhaps she'll drop it on Thursday 7th.

Very excited to hear here new material. I hope she doesn't feel the need to lower herself to being on the x factor, which is such a shambles of a show. She is far better than that!

1. "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" - 8 - 2012 (620,000)
2. "Because of You" - 7 - 2005 (530,000)
3. "Since U Been Gone" - 5 - 2005 (495,000)
4. "My Life Would Suck Without You" - 1 - 2009 (462,000)
5. "Heartbeat Song" - 7 - 2015 (412,000 - #1 on streaming only)
6. "Mr. Know It All" - 4 - 2011
7. "Breakaway" - 22 - 2006
8. "Second Hand Heart" - 21 - 2015

12. "Piece by Piece" - 95 - 2016
13. "I Do Not Hook Up" - 36 - 2009
14. "Never Again" - 9 - 2007

"My Life" still really doesn't feel like a #1 but I'm impressed that it's in the top four. "Underneath the Tree" really is a future Christmas classic though, hopefully it can break into her official top ten this year!

MUCH better album cover than Piece By Piece.

Right! It's probably her best since All I Ever Wanted, as basic as the artwork for that was. The font is bizarre but hopefully she reads that people are unhappy with it and changes it.

"Move You" is also very strong, it's feels very 'album track' at the moment but I could also see it doing well later into the campaign, like "Piece by Piece". Loving this era already! biggrin.gif

Posted by: AdamAloud Sep 7 2017, 10:22 AM

'Move You' is lovely, prefer that to the single on first listen!

Posted by: Saenerys Sep 7 2017, 10:34 AM

Move You is pleasant on first listen, can definitely see it being a grower!

Posted by: Josh! Sep 7 2017, 12:33 PM

I agree with Sean that "Love So Soft" is very Meghan Trainor but more second era when she became a bit rubbish. Not really keen on the spoken-ish chorus but I wasn't keen on Heartbeat Song either and quite liked the last album so my hopes are still high.

"Move You" is definitely the stronger of the two for me but it's just a classic ballad really with not much else to it so I can't see myself returning to it much sad.gif

Posted by: Liаm Sep 7 2017, 12:42 PM

Move You is way better!

Posted by: FiaSpice Sep 7 2017, 12:55 PM

Welcome to Buzzjack! cheer.gif

She owes the UK a whole tour for cancelling kink.gif I'd be interested to know what size venues she'd go for - shes a global act but I can't see her selling out arenas like she was able to two or three albums ago.

Interesting article about her working relationship with Dr Luke from Billboard:

QUOTE
Kelly Clarkson Says She Gave Up 'Millions' in Songwriting Royalties to Show How Much She Dislikes Dr. Luke

Kelly Clarkson has revealed she willingly lost "hundreds of thousands of dollars," "or millions," in royalties for refusing to associate herself with Dr. Luke as a co-writer on her 2009 single "My Life Would Suck Without You."

In a new interview with Z100, the singer said, "I was making a point to the people working with me, going, 'This is how much I didn't want to do this.' I don't care about the money. I don't care about, oh, 'You're going to be the most famous person ever if you do this.' That's not what holds weight in my life."

Last year, Clarkson alleged that those who worked at her record label at the time, RCA (owned by parent company Sony), said they would not release her album if she did not work with Dr. Luke.

While she insisted her experience with Dr. Luke is nothing like Kesha's alleged experience -- "He didn't do anything like that with me," she said in the Z100 interview, referring to Kesha's allegations of abuse and her ongoing legal battle against the producer -- the former American Idol star is just "not a fan" of him.

"There's a lot of times in my career where you don't see my name on the song and that's because sometimes I don't write them," she explained. "A lot of times I do change the song in a way that probably you should ask for credit, but I don't because the song was already great -- I just made it more me. I think a lot of artists steal credit a lot from writers, which I think is super crappy 'cause that's their livelihood."

"If I deserve it, I usually ask," she continued. "And I did deserve it on that song just 'cause I changed it a bit," she said of "My Life Would Suck Without You," which went to No. 1.

"Basically, they were gonna sit on my record unless I did what they wanted. I was so frustrated because I literally said, 'Anyone in the world but this one person. I will work with anyone you want to put in my path.' I love people. I think that's apparent. I think I'm a nice person, that's apparent. It was just this one thing, and I asked not to work with Dr. Luke just because I had not a good experience with him," said Clarkson. "If an artist like me, I generally love everyone. You have to really be a special kind of ... for me not to like you."

"They brought up writing credit at the end," she went on. "They were like, 'Well, you changed the song.' And I was like, 'I don't want my name near his. I want to pretend this didn't happen in my life and I want to forget it.'"

...where very few songs peak in their first week. It's doing fine here. If you look past the first-week chart position, it's still top 40 on iTunes and is on course to get at least as much airplay as Heartbeat Song did. Not an instant hit sure, but not "bombing" by any means, at least not here. UK is another story, hopefully she'll have XF or other good promo lined up.

Do you mean announces and doesn’t cancel? kink.gif

Kelly hasn’t cared about commercial success or performance since My December tbh, think she’s probably quite happy putting out the music she likes, regardless of whether the single is a hit anywhere.

Like Jonjo said I reckon a top ten album is a given, she’s a big enough name to generate some good starters.

I love Kelly but it did frustrate me how it hadn't been thought out. The fact she cited vocal reasons to cancel and then appear on a few big slots such as Idol did annoy me a little bit. She has said though she doesn't plan on having anymore children so I think a world tour for 2018 is definitely a viable option!

EDIT: Another interview, fantastic as always!

Oooooh thanks for posting that - preordered a signed copy, so excited for Friday!

However.... “ThA BaNgEr is the final track Go High. Remember when listening to Take You Higher in her previous LP made us think "What?! Is she on acid? Or am I?" Well, Go High is a close cousin of TYH but with no drug problem” doesn’t fill me with confidence as TYH is easily up there as one of my most disliked tracks in her discography.

Posted by: Jonjo Oct 22 2017, 12:42 PM

Take You High is one if the best! ohmy.gif

Excited to hear this album. I've loved everything I've heard so far!

Posted by: SeanmanjiGrey Oct 23 2017, 06:10 PM

It’s not like TYH based on the new trailer she’s just shared! ohmy.gif

Don’t know why my phone double posted! The last few tracks on preview alone sound outstanding!

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE Oct 23 2017, 06:29 PM

It would sound completely out of place if it did...

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE Oct 23 2017, 06:30 PM

Plus unless that blogger is internal at Atlantic, I’m not aware the album was distributed out yet and if so, reviews would be embargoed until AT LEAST wednesday...

It most likely will bomb...only the hardcore fans are likely to know about it and will buy it.

Ihave to say the alum sounds a bit samey sad.gif If you just listened to the songs we've got so far, you'd get the gist. I think it'll be the sort of album that will be fab when you listen to it all but you never really go back to many of the songs on their own.

Posted by: kye Oct 24 2017, 11:11 AM

im so torn about this because i don't think the production & songwriting is where it needs to be and i feel like Atlantic have given her too much free rein for it to be an international smash but i love Kelly & am willing it to do well.

you can tell how passionate she is about the project and she's the happiest we've seen her in a long time. the only thing that seems disappointing is the material itself.. as much as it pains me to say it.

OCC have released her top 14 best sellers with combined chart sales for the top five:

1. "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" - 8 - 2012 (620,000)
2. "Because of You" - 7 - 2005 (530,000)
3. "Since U Been Gone" - 5 - 2005 (495,000)
4. "My Life Would Suck Without You" - 1 - 2009 (462,000)
5. "Heartbeat Song" - 7 - 2015 (412,000 - #1 on streaming only)
6. "Mr. Know It All" - 4 - 2011
7. "Breakaway" - 22 - 2006
8. "Second Hand Heart" - 21 - 2015
9. "Behind These Hazel Eyes" - 9 - 2005
10. "Miss Independent" - 6 - 2003
11. "Underneath the Tree" - 30 - 2013
12. "Piece by Piece" - 27 - 2016

Update:

1. "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" (630,000)
2. "Because of You" (543,000)
3. "Since U Been Gone" (507,000)
4. "My Life Would Suck Without You" (467,000)
5. "Heartbeat Song" (417,000)

Pretty decent increases, "Since U Been Gone" has added 12,000 units in ~7 weeks! The ranking remains the same, I imagine there's quite a gap if "Piece by Piece" hasn't managed to climb any further with its new peak.

It does feel like 'Meaning of Life' is going to flop quite heavily which is a shame. I really enjoyed the 'Piece by Piece' album (apart from "Heartbeat Song") so I was hoping she'd get at least one medium-sized hit from this.

I know the audio has been posted but this live session is incredible ohmy.gif

Lets be realistic though - Piece By Piece (other than the title track) wasn't really massive either so I don't know why anyone is surprised this era isn't likely too either? As it's been said you can tell shes happy and excited about the project and I think that's the most important thing really moving forward with the new label etc.

Heartbeat Song was pretty big aswell was it not? I know it didn't have loads of longevity but it's pretty recognisable as being a hit, whereas she doesn't really have anything going for her this era.

I mean, look what happened with Piece By Piece, with AI returning next year maybe she can recreate that magic!

Heartbeat Song was decent but it wasn't massive when you look at her anthems these last few years - Stronger, My Life Would Suck Without You, Since U Been Gone, etc. I'm not one for numbers too much but it didn't feel as big as those. I'm unsure whether she'd go back to AI as it's on a new channel with the rerun and shes on The Voice now.

Hearing the album trailer and I agree with Liam. I doubt there'll be any "holy shit this is incredible" moments on the album, but it's still gonna be a good album. It's gonna be nice and good, but that's all. But hey, she is super happy and so excited about this album, that's all that matters! wub.gif

First listen rate!!

xx.x 'A Minute (Intro)' > I don't like rating short intros etc.. but it's nice. <
09.0 'Love So Soft' > Actually underrated tbh. <
08.5 'Heat' > This is stronger than I thought it would be judging by the preview! Hopefully the album follows suit! <
09.0 'Meaning Of Life' > This reminds me of a strong Paloma track. Really love how uplifting it is. <
10.0 'Move You' > The lyrics are very clichéd, but it kinda works in it's favour as opposed to taking away from it. My fave of the era so far. The choir part gets me. EVERY TIME. <
06.5 'Whole Lotta Woman' > Love how fierce she is on this, but it's all a bit jarring on first listen. I think it's one that will grow/just needs getting used to. Not bad though. <
08.0 'Medicine' > I really like this. I think this could also grow. In fact as the track goes on it gets better. <
07.0 'Cruel' > It's nice. Very album filler, but nice. <
07.0 'Didn't I' > See above. <
08.0 'Would You Call That Love' > It builds so well! Another one to keep an ear out for the future! <
11.0 'I Don't Think About You' > Holy shit. This is stunning. OH MY. <
07.0 'Slow Dance' > Another "filler but nice" track. This could grow though! <
07.5 'Don't You Pretend' > Love the staggered backing voxals during the chorus. <
09.0 'Go High' > A nice change of sound for the end of the album. The only thing is that the vocal procession on the "go hiIIIGH" is quite annoying. But we'll see how I feel after a few more listens. <

Overall, stronger than I had expected (I expected to rate things about 06/07 more), but there are still a few too many "nice but filler" tracks on here, but a few have potential to grow and I think overall, it'll impact me in a similar way to how 'Joanne', 'Witness' and 'Younger Now' have sort of impacted me (I'll probs end up loving it a whole lot more than others will).

HER VOCALS ON THIS ALBUM THOUGH!! The best they've EVER been!

Posted by: allfiredup93 Oct 27 2017, 01:33 AM

I Don’t Think about You hit me so hard 😭

Not usually a fan of albums with mostly uptempo tracks but I loved this as a whole!

Posted by: SeanmanjiGrey Oct 27 2017, 07:04 AM

xx A Minute (Intro) - Won't rate as it was pretty forgettable as far as intros go laugh.gif
09 Love So Soft - I've had a MASSIVE u-turn on this over the last two months. It's brilliant, not quite as good as her other singles but it is fab to listen to
06 Heat - I was surprised, much better than the snippet in the album trailer
10 Meaning Of Life - Another great "Kelly" moment, fantastic vocals and of course, the live Nashville session was OUTSTANDING. If anything I feel the live version of this is MUCH better with the studio version a bit limp in comparison
08 Move You - Like Love So Soft, massive u-turn on this despite being a tad cliche like Jonjo said, but it fits nicely
04 Whole Lotta Woman - pretty cringe on first listen and doesn't really go anywhere for me sad.gif
05 Medicine - At first it reminded me of Whitney Houston, similarly to Whole Lotta Woman, it doesn't really go anywhere for me.
05 Cruel - Very filler
07 Didn't I - Anyone else getting reminded of A-YO from Joanne, in the chorus??
09 Would You Call That Love -THE CHORUS IS FLAWLESS.
09 I Don't Think About You - THOSE VOCALS.
05 Slow Dance - A bit boring on first listen but I'm hoping it grows!
04 Don't You Pretend - SO forgettable drama.gif
08 Go High - I was REALLY worried about this after the earlier preview last week said it was like Take You High from Piece By Piece and I honestly can't hear any resemblance ohmy.gif loving this and the end of the track when it slows down and everything is FABULOUS. Yes Michelle Obama inspiring the queen of self empowerment *.*

Overall verdict: I really do love the direction shes going in from the last few records. Really loving Love So Soft/Move You/Meaning Of Life/Would You Call That Love/I Don't Think About You/Go High on first listen. I'm glad that 3/4 of the tracks she wrote as in my album top few tracks because I love it when shes involved with the writing, as some of my previous faves are penned by her and this is no exception wub.gif

I love Go High, Don't You Pretend, I Don't Think About You and Medicine out of the album tracks wub.gif Not as strong as her other albums but it is quite good.

Slow Dance is that one song that really grabbed me, I’ve had it on repeat all week lol. I really like I Don’t Think About You and Whole Lotta Woman too. Move You and Slow Dance are my top 2, both 11/10s.

This is one of my favourite Kelly albums, I love the “Love On the Brain”-vibe and the more soulful sound, it really suits her.

#11 in the UK for Kelly. Gutted for her tbh I thought she was a surefire top 10, and the fact that idiot Chris Brown is at #10 in front of her grates on me! She needs to get over here and start promo asap!

Stormzy has just zoomed straight into the iTunes top 10 on the back of his XF performance and he performed on the night that gave them their worst ever ratings...

I'm not saying her song will go top 10 or even top 40, but that little bit of promo would do wonders for the album, especially for Kelly.

No, I didn’t say that. I’m not against Kelly getting promotion but why not choose a better platform than the tacky X factor? It’s also hardly the most popular show anymore, averages about 4-5 million now and way down in the ratings. Why doesn’t she perform on the one show or Graham Norton?

Posted by: allfiredup93 Nov 12 2017, 07:58 PM

When will it be aired then? Next week? As there were behind the scenes photos of her rehearsing

Posted by: SGrey Nov 12 2017, 08:00 PM

What, Graham Norton? That was Friday!

Posted by: Cameron Nov 12 2017, 08:01 PM

Wait, how can you not have heard of Seal? Seriously? ohmy.gif

She is performing at the AMAs this month and has tweeted..

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEEEE let it be 'I Don't Think About You'! I think that would be perfect to help sell the album over the holidays!

I will settle for 'Heat' and 'Medicine' too though! So excited!
So it seems like they're fighting for either 'Heat' or 'Medicine' for the next single, according to her interview with OCC! 😁

http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/kelly-clarkson-talks-waving-goodbye-to-pop-rock-for-her-sensual-new-album-the-meaning-of-life-interview__21017/

YYYAAASSS. I'd be happy with either of those, even if I'd have preferred 'I Don't Think About You' (although I can see them pushing that one around the time her series of The Voice airs)

Looking forward to seeing which track she performs at the AMAs!

Posted by: SGrey Nov 16 2017, 06:19 AM

Not her ignoring one of the best tracks ohmy.gif

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE Nov 16 2017, 10:51 AM

Medicine omg

Posted by: Mullo Nov 16 2017, 03:04 PM

Unfortunately there isn't a hit song on this album. Doesn't really matter what track she chooses...

Posted by: troublepink Nov 16 2017, 05:53 PM

Kelly is finally getting together with Pink, they’re performing together at the AMAs 💕

Posted by: SGrey Nov 16 2017, 05:54 PM

OMG that’s going to be ICONIC *.*

Aaahhhh! Oh my God! wub.gif

Posted by: Jonjo Nov 20 2017, 03:23 PM

We all need to look at each other the way these two look at each other. wub.gif

Simply stunning (no matter how bland I find the original laugh.gif These two were so flawless though!!)

---
Then she also performed a 'Miss Independant'/'Love So Soft' medley. Which was great ofc, but I wanted and got my hopes up for a new song cry.gif

Posted by: Cameron Nov 20 2017, 04:04 PM

Both performances were incredible. Demi singing to Love So Soft tho *.*

Posted by: Jonjo Nov 20 2017, 10:10 PM

Love So Soft received a huge boost! Currently at #13 on US iTunes!!

Posted by: Spiceboy Nov 20 2017, 10:28 PM

Good it deserves to smash she is just amazing wub.gif

Posted by: Neil Nov 26 2017, 02:42 PM

Kelly is the musical guest on Strictly tonight smile.gif

Posted by: THEO. Nov 26 2017, 07:43 PM

She performed "Meaning of Life"! It was an excellent performance, her vocals are better than ever right now. I'm glad she performed that rather than "Love So Soft" again, it's my favourite from the album along with "Move You".

Posted by: SGrey Nov 26 2017, 08:58 PM

Was this prerecorded last weekend/weekend before? Seems odd how she was over here for Graham, back in the states for AMA and back over just for this...

Either way, I love the song and a great performance wub.gif

Posted by: Jonjo Nov 26 2017, 10:58 PM

I am probs wrong, but I think it was pre-recorded the weekend she did Graham Norton? laugh.gif

My fave performance of the entire era so far! Amazing. wub.gif Those notes heart.gif SO HAPPY that she didn't just do 'Love So Soft' again haha.

Posted by: Mullo Nov 27 2017, 10:09 AM

It was prerecorded

Posted by: SGrey Nov 28 2017, 06:15 AM

AHHH okay, just was confused that’s all! laugh.gif

Latest medley performance:

wub.gif queen of all genres!

Posted by: Spiceboy Nov 28 2017, 12:38 PM

Any positive impact on sales? I'm really rooting for her wub.gif

Posted by: allfiredup93 Dec 6 2017, 12:51 PM

Medicine is “probably” the next single according to Kelly!

Posted by: Jonjo Dec 6 2017, 01:03 PM

Nice choice. Seems to be a huge fan fave, but it's probs about 4th or 5th for me. I'd have preferred 'Heat'. Not that anything would do anything at this point laugh.gif

Posted by: Juan Carlos 🌴 Dec 20 2017, 03:10 AM

Announced on The Voice US that "Medicine" is the next single.

This promo focuses heavily on Kelly ofc, but my GOD she looks like she actually injects so much personality and life into the show in the only way that she can! She is one of a kind and I really don't know what we have done to deserve her!! 😭😭

Posted by: Spiceboy Jan 31 2018, 10:55 PM

I genuinely love her, even if I hated her music (which I don't I quite love some of it) I would still adore her she is just infectious!

Posted by: Jonjo Feb 2 2018, 07:44 PM

Kelly serving us the best moments of 2018 several times already and it's only 2nd February!!

Posted by: Cameron Feb 9 2018, 04:10 PM

I Don't Think About You is officially the second single

Posted by: kye Feb 9 2018, 04:32 PM

If they want a hit, they should really go with ‘Woud You call that Love’ as AC radio would eat that up.
